1/13: Meals and fitness for the week

I feel halfway motivated to plan and prep for this week. The cloudy and cold make me want to curl up with a blanket and pray for food to magically appear, but at the same time, memories of last week’s killer Paleo bread make me realize it’s worth it to have some snacks and food on hand, ready to go. It’s going to be especially helpful this week because I’ll be playing nurse: the Pilot gets his wisdom teeth out tomorrow and Liv gets her 1-year shots. Pray for me.

Clouds

Here’s what the tentative fitness plan looks like:

Sunday: HIIT and Steady

Monday: OFF

Tuesday: HIIT and Strength (testing workout 2 for Winter Shape Up)

Wednesday: teach Zumba

Thursday: teach Buff Booty

Friday: OFF

Saturday: Strength + (maybe) easy cardio, depending on my class schedule for the day

Bicep curl

Meal/snack ideas:

Tempeh taco lettuce wraps

-Teriyaki shrimp and veggies (will post the recipe when I make it)

-Blueberry-lemon perfect protein pancakes

Amazeballs

-Green juices (I’m going to wash, rough chop and bag the veggies for each serving so all I have to do is put it in the juicer and… clean the juicer <– the worst part)

Juice 1 of 1 2

-Quinoa for breakfasts and salad toppings

Homemade Nuttzo (this looks AMAZING)

Slow cooker chicken breasts. I’ve been doing this the past couple of weeks and it’s been awesome to add to eggs, salads and an extra dinner component

Tempeh taco meat

(tempeh taco meat)

So tell me, friends: what’s on the plan for this week? Are you trying any new recipes or fitness classes?

Don’t forget that Winter Shape Up starts Jan. 28th! So excited to workout with all of you 🙂

xoxo

We’re gearing up to PCS in a bit, so I’m slowly working my way through each room, throwing stuff out. My “helper” is great at pulling everything out as I try to get it organized.

Since that doesn’t really count as a workout, despite how much I’d like it to, we’re going to hit the gym for some Zumba a few times this week, then do some at home stuff, via your Youtube channel! I’ve never done a HIIT work out, so bring on the pain (and crying, sweating, and whining. 😉 )!

  2. Lucie@FitSwissChick on January 13, 2013 at 11:24 am

I LOVE to read your workout and meal plans every week, I do the same with the planning. And same is also, that the weather here is foggy (and freaking cold too) and I would love to e served with food all the time straight to the couch 🙂 I have a new gym membership and would like to try out the TRX bootcamp classes, can’t wait! my Curried-Coconut-Shrimps are on the plan too, as always.

Hi Gina! I have a random question .. do you know of any health/fitness/clean eating bloggers that have diabetes? My b/f has diabetes and while I always try all of your recipes, I want to try to find a blog that’s catered to diabetes. Thank you!! PS Good luck to the Pilot and Liv!

  4. Sara @ fitcupcaker on January 13, 2013 at 11:34 am

I think I will be doing some crockpot meals this week too 🙂

  5. Kim on January 13, 2013 at 11:37 am

Your buff booty class sounds like one I need to try!
This week I’m going to keep going through the Les Mills Combat program (5 days) + I always do lots of random extras!
Not sure on meals yet – I do have a new barbecue chicken recipe in the crock pot right now!!!

Good luck to all of y’all this week – you as you play nurse and your pilot with the wisdom teeth. Hopefully little Live won’t have any problems with her shots!!!

  6. Danielle on January 13, 2013 at 11:54 am

Everything looks amazing! Now I really want to try that homemade nutzo and blueberry lemon pancakes! Both sound amazing!

  7. Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries on January 13, 2013 at 12:03 pm

What are some different ways you use quinoa for breakfast? I just recently tried it for the first time and am trying to figure out some different ways of using it!

  8. Tracey on January 13, 2013 at 12:08 pm

I hate washing out the juicer! I think that’s why I’m taking a break from juicing for a week. 🙂 This week I’m doing protein smoothies for breakfast/post-workout, hard-boiled eggs and veggies for a morning snack, pre-cooked turkey strips (TraderJoe’s), roasted red peppers, hummus, spinach and a cheese stick on a whole wheat wrap for lunches, amazeballs for a PM snack, and dinner is still TBD…something with chicken, lime, cilantro and veggies. 🙂 Gonna be a healthy week, let’s go!

  9. Melanie on January 13, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Just curious if you could add tips or modifications for us preggo’s who are hoping to do your Winter Shape Up?

  10. Erin O. on January 13, 2013 at 12:23 pm

Hey! I love your planning, I’ve started doing it on my blog as well!http://lifeistoliveandlove.wordpress.com/ It helps keep on track!

Meals are harder to plan but thanks for the ideas! I found this recipe to make this week as well:

  11. Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin on January 13, 2013 at 12:37 pm

I wish I liked juices because it seems like such an easy way to get in fruits and veggies, but I just really don’t enjoy juice! I plan on getting in a longer run this week because it’s been a while since I’ve done a long distance and I’m feeling up for it!

  12. Leanne @ Healthful Pursuit on January 13, 2013 at 12:44 pm

Wow, that taco meat looks awesome! I’m pretty new here, is that you in your own gym? Looks like a home gym in that picture. If it is, so great that you have something like that! My gym is my bedroom. Roll out the ‘ol yoga mat and get to work!

On plan for this week – yoga Monday-Sunday as usual and a bunch of green juices! Nothing too exciting…

  13. Rachel @ Eat, Learn, Discover! on January 13, 2013 at 12:46 pm

Good luck with meal prepping! And I feel for you playing nurse – I just had my wisdom teeth out this week, and it was not a fun week. You may want to have lots of smoothie ingredients and froyo on hand for your pilot ;-P

Also – that homemade nuttzo looks amazing. I’ve never wanted to shell the $$ for a jar, so you’ll have to let us know how the homemade stuff compares to the jarred stuff!

  14. kim@hungryhealthygirl on January 13, 2013 at 1:01 pm

That Paleo bread looks awesome…I want to give that a try. I plan to make some crock-pot meal. I have a busy week ahead, so I’m sticking with easy throw together recipes. Have a great week!

  15. Amanda @ .running with spoons. on January 13, 2013 at 1:05 pm

Dealing with wisdom teeth and baby shots? Eeep! Good luck, Gina! Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I’ve seriously been slacking when it comes to meal prep, but this week I’ll be going out to buy a slow cooker so I’m hoping to do some playing around with that. Those chicken breasts sound amazing and I’ll definitely be trying that out.

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 4:21 pm

you will fall madly and deeply in love with the slow cooker 🙂

  16. Cait @ Chicago Girl Fitness on January 13, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I have 6 workouts scheduled for the week + I’m teaching a couple kickboxing classes. I bought groceries yesterday, so meal planning and prep will take place tonight.

  17. Danica @ It's Progression on January 13, 2013 at 1:45 pm

I tried a new Mexican Quinoa dish on Friday that was fantastic, and tomorrow I plan to make another new-to-me recipe, Chickpeas and Dumplings. Yum!

  18. Caitlin on January 13, 2013 at 1:56 pm

It’s hard for me to literally “plan” out the week because I’m one of those people who goes by feel to see what workouts to do that day, and what I want to eat, etc. I kind of go to the grocery store with a loose list and get inspired when I’m there 🙂 BUT I am planning on at least making your tempeh tacos and also trying your raw choco-cado pudding! Also, I did the hiit and steady workout this morning on the elliptical and it killed me..I was raining sweat…it was awesome!

Always love reading your sunday posts!

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 4:21 pm

i hope you love them! and happy to hear you were sweating buckets with me this morning- it killed me too 🙂

  19. Kayla on January 13, 2013 at 2:30 pm

Your weekend posts about your plans are always so motivating. It’s gloomy here too and I don’t want to do anything! Good luck with the sickies in your house this week!

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 4:20 pm

      thank you! <3

  20. Christy L. on January 13, 2013 at 2:38 pm

I also have tempeh tacos on my list, along with lots of fish and veggies. I made a buffalo tempeh salad last week, and it was awesome. I’m loving exploring tempeh!

Planning on upping my running mileage this week!

  21. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on January 13, 2013 at 2:43 pm

Those tempeh meat tacos are going on my meal plan for the week – yum! And I’ve been doing the same green juice/smoothie prep – it makes everything (besides for clean-up, ugh) so much easier!

  22. Amelia on January 13, 2013 at 2:44 pm

Sounds like both the Pilot and Liv will be in the mood for mashed potatoes/sweet potatoes, pudding, and popsicles (or smoothies). I remember feeling like a chubby bunny with marshmallows in my cheeks after my wisdom teeth were removed. 😉

The nuttzo recipe looks neat. I ALMOST bought some yesterday at Whole paycheck but just couldn’t justify the price tag (especially when I have bags and bags of nuts in my house). Maybe I’ll get adventurous and whip up my own creation. I do plan on making another loaf of the delicious GF bread this week. It was so nice to have a quick and easy breakfast or snack around everyday. Our weekly eats include: spag squash, slow cooker beef, chicken tenderloin, salmon, cod, lentils, butternut squash, sweet potatoes and lots of greens (kale, spinach, asparagus, etc). Great week of clean eats!

Side note: This morning I tried out a recipe for a paleo coconut cake. If the cake tastes as good as the batter, I’ll link back here later or tweet for you. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 4:20 pm

thank you- i’ll stock up on those things when i get groceries today!
and yes, i would love the recipe 🙂

  23. Jo @ LivingMintGreen on January 13, 2013 at 2:49 pm

I’m meal & snack prepping today too! So far I’ve made chunky tomato basil soup, spinach & pesto egg muffins, roasted butternut squash, brown basmati rice & quinoa. It makes my lunch life so much easier, since I typically come home hangry & making the same salad or egg wrap everyday. I despise cleaning the juicer too! Ugh.

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 4:20 pm

do you have the egg muffin recipe?

  24. Herbivore Triathlete on January 13, 2013 at 2:59 pm

Checking out the tempeh taco meat first of all, that looks tempting! Also the amazeballs recipe.

Good luck with the shots and wisdom teeth surgery, yuck!

  25. Stephanie on January 13, 2013 at 4:05 pm

Good luck to the Pilot… I get my last two wisdom teeth out two weeks from now and ten years later from the last ones. Did I miss the beginning of Winter Shape Up?

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 4:19 pm

      nope, it starts jan 28!

  26. Carley on January 13, 2013 at 4:20 pm

    Ooh the nutzo looks great!

On this weeks agenda is start classes, live fit trainer and making some new recipes!

As for wisdom teeth removal I’d stock up on applesauce, soup and mashed taters!

  27. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on January 13, 2013 at 4:38 pm

Making a yummy chowder tonight. Hoping to use the crock pot this week!

  28. jaclyn on January 13, 2013 at 4:56 pm

I love reading you all the time and love your foodie/workout stuff, but am so excited this week to ACTUALLY be able to use some of the recipes, since I just moved into a new apt (wahoo) and have a new kitchen (double wahoo) and also the workouts- I am looking forward to my first WSU *withyou* this yeaR! my apt has a gym 🙂

Sending my thoughts and good vibes for the pilots wisdom teeth surgery- i’ve had it done and while it isn’t fun, it’s over before you can count backwards from ten, heh.

I have a question about Zumba, I went once and loved it but by no means could keep up with the dance steps, I felt like I was turning in circles trying to watch peoples feet and keep up. Does it usually just take a few classes to catch on, or are there basic steps that’d be helpful to learn prior to my next class?

    • Fitnessista on January 13, 2013 at 11:37 pm

it’s one of those things where the more you go, the easier it gets, especially if you take classes from the same instructor. you’ll learn the dances and the moves- there’s just a little bit of a learning curve
      xoxo

Thanks for the advice! I’m going tomorrow. I’ll fake it until I make it:)

  32. Sarah on January 13, 2013 at 8:16 pm

What juicer do ya’ll like? Any ideas on which one to purchase & why?

  33. Ashley on January 13, 2013 at 11:27 pm

That looks amazing! Ps. Awhile back I asked you for some dinner places in phonenix and you gave me two amazing ones – season 52 and true foods. Both were absolutely amazing! Thanks! Sorry it took me so long to thank you! 🙂

Good luck to the Pilot and Liv this week! They’re lucky to have such a great wife/mom to take care of them. 🙂

This week I’m making chicken breasts Dijon from Bon Appetit, tempeh with brussels sprouts and quinoa from one of my cookbooks, and butternut squash risotto!

  35. Dani @ Live Lightly Everyday on January 14, 2013 at 11:57 am

You are so good about meal planning! I need some of your motivation/organization! 🙂

  36. Tracy on January 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Homemade Nuttzo! Yes!! Can’t believe I never thought of that before myself. It’s my absolute favorite nut butter but never ever get to have it cuz of the price. I was so excited to try making it that I went right out this morning and bought the ingredients, but I followed the Nuttzo label more closely (brazil nuts, not walnuts, etc). SUCCESS!! it turned out just like Nuttzo! I even put it in an old Nuttzo jar 😉 You must give it a try, Gina. Thanks for the recipe idea/link!

    • Fitnessista on January 14, 2013 at 5:11 pm

      omgggg, i’m so excited.

      • Tracy on January 14, 2013 at 7:02 pm

Nuttzo update: My bulk bin ingredients made 2 full 16oz jars for $12.25 so about $6ish per jar. Pretty stoked!

  37. Alyssa on January 14, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Thanks so much for the shout out on my Homemade Nuttzo 🙂 I hope you like it!!

  38. Joanna on January 14, 2013 at 9:06 pm

What is the booty class you teach? I wish my gym had one.
