12/30: Thoughts from the week

-I found it hilariously appropriate that this poster was hanging in the exam room for today’s midwife appointment.

poster

-My cervix is not a trampoline, but I have a little friend who seems to think otherwise. I’ll be walking along happily and KA-POW! It’s a feeling unlike any other- shocking, really.

-I can fall asleep anywhere right now… unless it’s bedtime. Then I toss and turn until I have to perform the athletic event of getting out of bed and shuffling to the restroom. The other night I got up 4 times. Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly love naps any more, I do.

-While I’m napping on the couch, I consider putting down a towel or blanket just in case my water breaks. I really like our couch, and it doesn’t matter what spills happen in the future, something about having it soaked in amniotic fluid grosses me out a little.

-Weight training seems to have officially fallen by the wayside this week. I love the effects of weight training, even though I’ve been lifting much lighter, but it just doesn’t sound good to me right now. I figure carrying around an extra 32 lbs counts as strength training….

Zumba and walking are the only things that still feel amazing- everything else will probably take a break until after I’m cleared to workout again after she’s born.

-Sweet baby is still happily resting in her egg-like state. Even after the mix of horror and success stories I’ve heard, I feel much better after talking to the midwife today. Her first baby was sunny-side up and she had a very easy labor, and she said that if she stays that way for now, she’ll probably flip during labor, and if not, I’ll be fine. All of the things I tell myself are always more reassuring to hear from someone else.

-The interesting thing is that if I end up needing to have a C-section, I have no idea who our doctor will be. The doctor will be on-call at the hospital and have to do the surgery, without either of us meeting him/her before. It’s strange to think that someone I’ve never met could be cutting into my body, but at the same time, no matter what, it will obviously be someone with a lot of experience.

-Yesterday, I went to Babies R Us to get the tiny last-minute things for our hospital suitcase. While I was grabbing a pair of little mittens to keep her from scratching her face, I was hit with the most overwhelming urge to meet our baby. Of course I’ve been thrilled and excited this entire time, but it’s gone from “It will be so amazing when the day is finally here” to “I have to meet her now.”

-Speaking of meeting her now, my very good friend whose due date is 4 days after mine is about to have her baby- her water broke this morning. I’m still secretly hoping we can be hospital neighbors, but little miss will be here when she’s good and ready.

Until then, I’ll keep singing to her and playing Zumba music, napping to my heart’s delight, and trying to be as patient as someone can be in this type of situation… <3

My LO headbutted my cervix during labor, that’s how my water broke! It was quite hilarious, since he and I were hooked up to monitors.. a huge POWWWW went through the monitor speaker, and I was like.. “Holy crap… did he really just try to catapult himself into the world?!”

Hope your wait is over soon! I was sure I’d go early/on due date but ended up 10 days late! Oh well, he just wanted some extra time to be all good and ready and prettied up. 🙂

Let me know if you end up actually using mittens – I haven’t heard of anyone that thought them useful.

    • Sam on December 30, 2011 at 6:21 pm

I realize it was almost thirty years ago, but I wish someone would have put mittens on me. I’ve got a nasty scar on my cheek from clawing at my face when I was a day old. 🙁

      • Marie on December 30, 2011 at 7:46 pm

I bought some of those mittens too, but they were too big for her hands and kept falling off. The jammies with the fold-over hand covers are way better and the hospital had some of those for us anyway.

Hang in there girl!! I know how it is as my due date is January 1st and I thought for sure I’d have my little one in my arms already. We are just living in each minute right now and hoping the nug comes soon as I really don’t want to go that much past due but whenever s/he is ready to come out is fine by me. Good luck with everything!

That would be so cool if you and your friend delivered around the same time! Do I hear joint birthday parties in the future?! So cute!

    Aaaah,any day now…
    Love the towel story…;-)

  5. Ann on December 30, 2011 at 6:15 pm

I am 41 weeks and very much in agreement with you! Especially being able to fall asleep anywhere except in bed. I’m trying to spend my random awake time at night visualizing labor starting, but it hasn’t worked yet!

    Hang in there!

I don’t know why but this made me bust out laughing. My hubby probably thinks I’ve lost my mind. I don’t blame you… the thought of staining your couch with amniotic fluid seems pretty icky to me!

Love your posts- you are a great pregnant blogger to follow because I feel as though you have been extremely realistic during your pregnancy. You have been a great pregnant role model. Thank you 🙂

Putting a towel on the couch is a good idea! I slept with one in my bed for a week when on that Friday at 6 am- pop! My water broke. (there was actually an audible popping sound about 4 seconds before the gush!) It was so good to have a towel there to absorb the water while I ran to the bathroom!

Isn’t it weird to see the picture of you on the side with no big belly there?!

It’s funny how excited I am for you considering we’ve never met :). First thing when I get up I think “ooohhh…I wonder if Gina’s in labor yet!!!” Can’t wait for that birth announcement post!

    • Leslie Wingate on December 30, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Me too. “Gina’s almost ready to pop, honey.” “Uhhh, Gina who?” 😉

    • Amber L on December 30, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Hahaha me too! I’m always wondering about it! Gina, I’m still sticking with my prediction that u will go into labor tomorrow or Sunday and have a new year’s baby! But maybe it’s just wishful thinking haha.

  11. Amy on December 30, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Enjoy these last days as just you and the Pilot. Your world is about to change in a big, big way (but a very good way!). And don’t think to yourself, I’ll do that when the baby is born because it will be easier, I can assure you it will not! Lol! But in all seriousness, enjoy these last days and RELAX and rest, it’s the best thing you can do right now :). Good luck with everything!

Totally understand about the towels – I had them in my car. My water broke when I stood up from taking a nap on the couch so you might not be off base anyway.

Something I did was have a hospital list posted at the house. That way if my water broke away from home the hubs or my mom would know what last minute items to grab that couldn’t go in my bag early (ie my glasses and contact solution)

  13. Felicia on December 30, 2011 at 7:13 pm

the only thing i can think of saying is… eeeeeeee!! so exciting!!! almost hereee! 🙂

I know how you feel, the end of the pregnancy is so tough. You can’t wait to meet your baby and everything makes you so emotional! The anticipation started to kill me and when I had those practice contractions but found out it wasn’t the real deal, I was so sad haha. I really couldn’t wait to see what my little guy would look like and I wanted to hold him in my arm so badly. I had never really held a new baby before him haha. You’re so close and you have a great attitude about it all though, I’m really excited for you 🙂 I bet she’ll be gorgeous!

  16. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on December 30, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Glad you had a good midwife appt, despite lil Girl still being sunny side up. At least you’re feeling emotionally calm about it and had a nice chat with your midwife, which can do wonders to hear POSITIVE personal stories and anecdotes like her first baby story.

As for the late stages of pregnancy…oh boy, yes, they do challenge one’s patience. Among other things. Hang in there!

  17. Marie on December 30, 2011 at 7:39 pm

We bought a waterproof mattress cover at Target, “just in case.” and my water did end up breaking in bed. We were really glad to have it, our mattress would have been ruined. And…I almost sort of miss those last few days before going into labor! It was kinda surreal.

Hi Gina, I loved this post! Today is the day I found out I was pregnant a year ago 🙂 and I just keep going over and over all of the feelings and thoughts I had when I was pregnant (and when she was born) . I just read your post about the overwhelming feeling that you got at the store today and I thought about something I said to a co worker shortly before Aubrey was born, I remember telling her that I just needed to meet my daughter and I was so anxious for her to be born I was willing to go through anything to hold her in my arms. Then I told her that I “missed her” and I felt weird saying that because I had never met her before but that was how it felt. My co worker who was a mom of four kids totally understood what I meant..
I will say it again its the MOST UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE EVER! I know as long as I live it was will be the most important thing I will ever do and I will always consider it to be my greatest accomplishment.. Good Luck with everything its going to be more amazing than you can ever imagine 🙂 Can’t wait to “meet” the little one when she arrives and hear all about your experience!

    • Michelle on December 30, 2011 at 8:56 pm

P.S. you won’t be pregnant “forever” a male doctor of mine said that to me on my due date and I seriously wanted to punch his eyes out 😉

  19. Laury on December 30, 2011 at 10:13 pm

I remember feeling the same exact way you did right now. Esp that overwhelming feeling of wanting to meet her…the moment that happened.

Love the kitten mittens. I’m not sure if it’s all babies….but Ella’s hand were like ice until a couple of months ago. Another mom told me something about their circulation and once they become mobile it warms up. I put those on her all the time to keep her lil fingers warm!

Love yah girl, hang in there, loved this post so much it….keep on “napping to my heart’s delight”

Mum carried us to 40 weeks, which given that we were twins at 8lb+ each, was a bit rough!

She ended up hula dancing to shake us loose.

  21. Jen on December 30, 2011 at 11:45 pm

My bff’s water broke on her couch, it did not stain but she had a fabric couch. Every time I looked at that couch I would think about her water breaking lol!

  22. Keely :) on December 31, 2011 at 3:32 am

I love how calm you are about meeting your little girl, it’s so refreshing to hear!

My best friend lost her waters this morning after being 7 days late, and she has been so uncomfortable. Although, it’s been lovely because her first daughter was born at 29 weeks.

Wishing you all of the luck in the world when the date comes, I’m sure everything will be perfect <3 xxx

Best Mum Confessions: no#24… so funny.

I don’t know how I’d handle the waiting at the end of pregnancy. I’ve raised a baby but never birthed one. I’m SO bad with waiting for OTHER people’s babies to be born that I’m sure I couldn’t handle the suspense. I’m that person that makes daily ‘checking up on you’ texts and has the food in the freezer and the organic cotton onesies just ready to deliver as soon as that baby arrives.

It’s good practice for you though. Everything is on her timing now, and that’s pretty much the way it’s going to be for… the foreseeable future.

  24. rachael on December 31, 2011 at 9:26 am

    Goods luck!

I’m sure you’ve heard tons of positive sunny side up stories, but I’ll add mine. I had a face up baby with my second and it was still a great L&D experience. The shower was my best friend for the back labor.:)

Hope you get to be hospital neighbors with your friend! Can’t wait to hear her name!

  25. Olivia on December 31, 2011 at 10:54 am

    Good luck Gina! <3

Hi. I was in the exact same boat one year ago. I was preggo with my son, I too worked out my entire pregnancy. My due date was 1/6. I went to 41 weeks and was induced on 1/11 because I wasn’t dilating. During labor I found out he was sunny side up. I didn’t want an epidural but because of the induction I chose to get it. Even after the epidural I could feel back labor because of him being sunny side up. I did have to push for 2 hours but it wasn’t bad. My experience was great considering my circumstance. I went in at 8am on 1/11 and my son was born at 2am on 1/12. All I can say is looking back everything goes fast. Get ready for the most wonderful & amazing time of your life it’s indescribable! I wish you the best!!!!!

Are you planning to blog when you go into labour or are you going to hold off til the baby is here post? I know my family will have to wait until the baby gets here as my husband is adamant he wants to be the only one there throughout the labour and obviously the birth… just wondering because your blogging is so consistent and there are so many excited people to hear your special news. I have loved every bit of your family section and hoping to keep following in my last few weeks til my girl arrives!

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2012 at 11:54 pm

thank you! so excited yours will be here soon, too
when i go into labor, i put up a post when we head to the hospital so you guys know what’s going on. depending on how quickly things progress, i might tweet through it, but if not, i’ll put up another post as soon as she’s here 🙂

      • Lisa O on January 2, 2012 at 12:53 am

That sounds so good, thanks for keeping us in the loop. It’s so much fun cheering you on and hearing all the news xo
