February 2009

Hey everyone! Happy weekend!

I just got back from a 10k and I’ve gotta say it was a toughie…

Here’s the rewind from yesterday before I get into all that:

Morning snack:

001

002

Lonchi (leftover brown rice and veggies and I added broccoli, red pepper flakes and soy sauce):

004

One of these little guys (I have an itchy burny throat and congestion that I’m trying to fight):

005

I took the puppies to the base trail for a walk, then had a meeting with my new employer. Starting on Monday, I’m going to be personal training again!!! I really missed it and was worried about the time issue –I go to school, TA at school and teach aerobics everyday- but the gym is close to our house and I can make my own schedule. Also, when the pilot gets back he’ll be able to help with the puppies, which was another worry. I’m so excited about it! Another trainer (a guy) and myself will be the sole trainers for the gym and I’ll be selling training packages to members and then training them during the week. So much fun :D It’s also hard for me to say no to extra dollas, particularly because I like to shop so much.

My mid-afternoon snackie was this:

006

I wanted to work out (something light since I had the 10k today) so I did the elliptical for 45 minutes. On the elliptical, I started to feel like garbage. So I came home and spent the rest of the night watching Penelope and reading a girly novel before crawling into bed at 10. Yes, 10pm on a Friday night. I’m a party animal.

I would like to introduce you to the dog who is afraid of EVERYTHING:

010

Yes, she is beautiful, but she’s also afraid of the world. I’m kinda at my wits end over here, because when I take her out, if people are outside, if a car goes by, if someone has their garage open (!) she refuses to go. She’ll always go on the base trail because she’s used to it and it’s secluded from traffic, but I can’t even walk her in the neighborhood anymore because she flips out, escapes from her harness, and runs home. Last night I took her out every 10-15 minutes for an hour before going to bed, and each time something happened to scare her. I KNEW she had to go, but she refused. She won’t go in the house (it’s a Shiba Inu thing- they’re very clean dogs) but I feel horrible making her hold it all night. Does anyone have any dog whisperer advice for me???

So this morning, I woke up, took the puppies out and of course, she refused to go. So I drove to Jeni’s house (who lives in the neighborhood across the street) and she went in her backyard. This left me running late for the race and I made this bfast to eat as I drove:

014

I had my Camelbak with me, new songs on the iPizzle, but managed to forget my heart rate monitor.

I felt so helpless!!!!

I’m already not great at pacing myself and had to run without a clue of how my time was. Also, the race was 2 loops of the course and half of the course was GRASSY HILLS with snakes, rocks and branches through the Georgia woods (and I know witches live back there). I was seriously creeped out most of the time but the icing on the cake was that the course REEKED like rotten cabbage!!! Lovely, eh???

So I finished the stinky, grassy, hilly, Blair witch course in 57:35. Considering everything, I’m neutral with that time—not too shabby, not wonderful. I did manage to get 2nd place for my age group though (whoo hoo??) and a very cute long sleeved shirt. I love long sleeves, don’t you? :D

When I got back to the casa, I took a showa and made a snack:

Half a luna cookie

015

1 egg and 1 egg white with onions and salsa

016

(and Joe, of course)

Well I’m off to clean the casa and am meeting Megan for a little shopping on her break from work. I’ll be around the blogsphere tonight after this house shines like the top of the Chysler building ;)

Have a happy Saturday,

Gina

Today’s tip: Have Sunday be your grocery/prep day for the week. Plan out most of your meals and buy the necessary ingredients and prep as much as you can. Put the ingredients into tupperwares for easy grab n’ go. I like to chop veggies ahead, make rice or grains that can be easily heated, a giant batch of hummus, pre-measure granola or cereal into plastic baggies that you can grab with a yogurt for a quick meal, and you can also grill or bake chicken for salads and wraps. If you can make healthy eating more convenient, it’s much easier to stick to.

Hey!!! HAPPY FRIIIIIIIIIIDAY!!!!!! Sorry I was MIA last night- I had some friends over for dinner (girls night). I considered blogging when everyone left (around 1am) but am glad I didn’t as I consumed copious amounts of red vino ;)

I started the day with a lovely b-fast cookie:

001

I love all the b-fast cookies that I’ve seen floating around the blog world! I’m so glad you guys enjoy them as much as I do.. It’s probably my favorite b-fast ever :D

I met Ashley and Megan at the gym and we did a half hour of pilates abs and a half hour of back and biceps. When I got home, I had the last (!) Pure Protein square of deliciousness:

002

Goodbye Pure Protein squares. You were amazing, but since I cannot find you anywhere for the life of me, it may be awhile before we meet again.

I went to work (TA) for a few hours, then came home and made a mango smoothie for lunch.

-1 banana

-1 whole mango (do not put the pit in the garbage disposal.. it will get stuck and you’ll eventually have to reach in with your hand to unclog it. Not pretty. I need my pilot back ASAP)

-1 cup milk of choice (I used organic skim)

-hoity toity William’s Sonoma vanilla extract (which I’m officially obsessed with. New expensive habit on the list)

-cinnamon

-1/2 scoop vanilla protein of choice (I used Designer Whey)

Blended all up in the Vita-Mix:

003

Frothy and incredible:

004

I went to teach a step class, which went pretty well. Usually by Thursday my body hurts a little from the aerobics classes/weights/yoga I do during the week, so I usually take Thursday a little easier.

The girls came over around 7 and we attempted something I’ve been wanting to do forever: make sushi!

I set out a few appetizers:

Grapes, goat cheese and crackers

005

Cucumber, hummus and carrots:

006

I loooooove hummus:

007

Nori wrappers and the bamboo roller I picked up at C&B last weekend:

008

The filling: brown sticky rice, avocado, cucumber and carrots

 013

Zucchini, squash, onion, carrots, garlic, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, salt and pepper:

012

My roll actually came out well, but the issue was cutting it! The nori didn’t cut very easily and I ended up with a california roll pile.

014

I also made some Gliding Calm baked tofu:

015

It was sooooo good!!!! We also finished off 3 bottles of organic wine (there were 4 of us). Such a blasty- I love girls night :D

I woke up this morning at 8 –I don’t think it’s possible for me to sleep in anymore- and decided to make some oat bran for b-fast.

-1/2 cup oat bran

-1 heaping tbs of brown rice protein

-1 small nanner

-vanilla, cinnamon and sea salt

-A TBS of TJ’s AB that the madre sent me (thank you madre!!!!!) spread all over the top:

016

I’m about to grab a cup (or 2) of caffe, then off to get my hurr cut. I always get nervous because my mom’s a stylist and she’s done my hair my entire life. I try to get it cut/colored when I go home, but it’s time and I don’t have a trip planned to AZ yet. So off to the V-town stylist (who’s actually very good). I need it—I look like a lion.

I’m also walking the puppies on base, meeting with a new employer (more to follow on that, but including the blog, I will now have 4 jobs. Am I crazy? Perhaps), hitting the gym (light because I’ve got a 10k bright and early), getting a massage, and then dinner :D It’s gonna be a good day!

Hope your weekend is off to a great start!

xoxo,

Gina

Random: What is your LEAST favorite song?? One that really grinds on your nerves… mine is “Little Red Corvette”. I used to hear it all the time on the 70s, 80s, 90s mix station the madre used to listen to and it drove me insane!! I heard it yesterday (so random) in a grocery store and it’s been stuck in my head ever since. Bah!!
