A little friend

Hey guys! How are you?? It’s almost the weekend!

I have to be honest with you— it was a rough night last night. The pilot, myself, the puppies and our family and friends are ok, but something else pretty traumatizing happened and even though we got everything worked out, I still don’t feel *right*. I am still pretty shaken up about everything.

******* Disclaimer: The purpose of my blog is NOT to bum you out, so if you don’t want to read the sad story, please skip ahead to the veggie burger pic.

For all of you who are now curious about what happened, here’s the story…. (I’m sorry it’s not a happy one)

I stopped by the house to pick up the pilot to go to Indian after teaching spin and Zumba. He parked on the side of the house and I remembered that he had taken the nail clippers in his car and I wanted them… so I walked over to his car and looked for them, couldn’t find them, and started to walk back towards the house. I heard a whimpering sound, and when I looked to see what it was, in the woods behind the house, two little puppy eyes were staring at me.

I was kind of confused about the little puppy lying there in the woods, and when I got closer, I could see there were two dogs- a big dog laying down, and the little dog that was cuddled up with it. I figured they were thirsty and called the pilot’s cell asking him to bring some water out.

When I got closer, I could hear wheezing and saw that the big dog had been tied to the ground with electrical wire around its neck and was wheezing because it couldn’t breathe. The CREEPER had taken wire out of the ground and tied that with rope around the dog’s neck and the dog was on the verge of being strangled. The little dog was curled up with the big dog, both thinking that the big dog was going to die.

The pilot came out of the back door and I yelled to him to get his knife (sobbing) and he ran inside the house, ran back with his knife and jumped the fence into the woods and started to cut the wire (3 different types of wire) from the dog’s neck and released the big dog. The dog immediately jumped up and covered the pilot with kisses and rubbed his head against the pilot’s leg, thanking him for saving his life. Little dog didn’t leave his side the entire time.

We took bog dogs into the front yard and put a leash on the big dog, but couldn’t get the little dog to come very close to us. He was a stray and very skittish and afraid of people, but the big dog and the little dog -who we nicknamed Little Friend for being such a good friend to the big dog by keeping it company when it looked like the end for the big dog- played the entire time we waited for animal control to pick them up. I wanted to keep them SO BADLY but we wouldn’t be able to do it with two dogs of our own and a rule that we can’t have more dogs than people in the house.

Animal control came and took the big dog (which I’m positive was someone’s pet because it was well-groomed, beautiful, friendly and had perfect white teeth) and couldn’t get the little dog, which we figured was a good thing because Little Friend was a stray, probably wouldn’t “pass inspection” and they would euthanize him. So Little Friend is running around Valdosta somewhere—we left him some food and water on the porch in case he comes back.

I cried when the took the big dog away. I cried all night, actually, thinking that there are so many weird people out there and talked with the pilot about how many things had to fall into place for me to even see the dogs out there. The pilot could have just met me at Indian instead of me picking him up after teaching. I could have decided I didn’t need the nail clippers out of his Jeep and just walked straight into the house. We are so lucky that we were in the right place at the right time and could do something about it.

We took pictures of the dogs, but I’m not going to post them just in case the total creeper that did this doesn’t see that we were the ones to remove his handiwork.

So since we spent the evening with the dogs and waiting for animal control, we missed out on Indian. It was fine because I didn’t have an appetite anyway, but knew I had to eat something after burning so many calories teaching two classes.

012

I had a sunshine burger which I’m officially in love with. It’s made out of brown rice, veggies and herbs. That’s it. No soy, no chemicals, nada. I actually pulled out a giant chunk of carrot while I was eating it. I love REAL food :D

And a salad:

013

Organic greens and herbs, grape tomatoes, bell pepper and Goddess dressing.

I ate all of the burger and most of the salad:

014

The pilot had frozen chimichangas. Definitely not Indian food, but it was 11:30 by that time so we did what we could :D

Snacks from yesterday included mango sorbet (mango with frozen banana and stevia)

001

And an Ezekiel with apricot spread:

002

This morning, I woke up groggy from crying and ready to take the puppers on a walk on the base trail.

I grabbed a nanner with AB before leaving:

002

The puppies and I walked for an hour, which was glorious, and we met a lady on the trail walking her dog and walked with her. Usually I look forward to some quiet time, but this morning it was very nice to have some conversation while we were walking.

When I got home, I had the oat groats that soaked last night (1/3 cup) with a little AB and Stevia:

017

I was really hankering for eggs, so I had two egg whites with some TJs salsa:

018

I’m going to spend the rest of the morning cleaning, make a grocery run, and start making food for tomorrow night’s girls night. I’m doing standard Gina appetizers (hummus and veggies, Tuscan white bean dip and crackers, cheese plate), caprese stacks (I got the idea from Jeni and they’re so cute!), roasted ratatouille tart, stuffed bell peppers, salad (Jeni is bringing the salad), lots of wine, and macaroons, cookies and blondies for dessert :D

Have a great day!

xoxo,

Gina

image  I’ll post the Summer Shape Up 3 points girls from yesterday later tonight. Legs day!!!! Keep up the amazing job you’re all doing :D

Thank god for people like you and your hub. Animal cruelty makes me SICK. I would have cried, too…and probably tried to keep both dogs! :p

What?! That is the most absurdly horrible thing I think I have ever heard. Did animal control seem concerned or like you should call the police? My thought is that whoever could do that to a dog is pretty demented and may have bigger issues.

Thank goodness you were there to help!

I hope today is much better for you.

My goodness – I can’t believe that story! Whoever did that just isn’t right.

OHHHH GINA!!!!! THANK GOD, THANK ABSOULTE GOD that you went to get those nail clippers. You and the pilot are such amazing people, and I’m so glad you saved that dog. I started crying when I read that because it’s just so terrible (I would have reacted exactly the same way as you). It’s terrible that there are people out there like that.

Oh.my.goodness. Thank the Lord that He put you in the right place at the right time! That is the most horrific thing I have ever heard…makes me so sad that there are actually people out there that would do something like that. I can imagine you were traumatized. But, if it weren’t for you, it would’ve been much worse, obvi. It all has a happy ending, and hopefully the big dog will find a happy home with someone who will love and cherish him! YOU gave him that chance! Yay you!

omg i can’t even believe that. You and the pilot save their lives! You are amazing Gina, and that just proves it even more :) I know that must have been so upsetting that there is someone out there sick enough to do that (wishing all the karma in the world on him…what goes around really does come around) but you were there in that moment for the right reason (your GOOD karma came around…) :) I might be able to meet up on 5/22, I actually have off from work and have a Dr’s appt!!! I live downtown, if you want to meet a 16 month old spunky weimaraner BABY and me, let me know!!! :)

you guys are awesome for doing what you did and saving those dogs. it’s so scary to see what people are capable of doing, and I’m glad you were there to help them!

i would have been shaken up, too. we had a cat on our deck a few months ago that had gotten it’s leg caught in a trap and was dragging it around. we caught it and took it to its owners down the street who DIDN’T even know she had been gone for a few days. They ended up having to take that leg off. We still see it in the neighborhood sometimes, but still.

I cannot even begin to understand how cruel and hateful some people are! It truly sickens me. I’m glad everything fell into place so that you were around to save that dog. I hope whoever did this doesn’t go try to claim the dog for whatever reason.

I hope today is a better day!

Wow, that would have traumatized me as well. I guess I am naive but it is often hard for me to believe that there are people like that in the world. I just can’t wrap my head around that. Why would someone do that?? Whenever I ask that question my husband has to remind me that people do cruel and evil things just because they are cruel and evil. That may be true but it is still hard to believe. Thank goodness you were in the right place at the right time and able to save the dog’s life!!

WOW gina what a tear jerking story. i am SO glad you were able to help the pups out, what an awful person to do that to an animal, i am so glad they recently passed animal cruelty off as a felony in my state. that is just wrong. thank you for sharing your heroic tale! loved reading it and glad it had a happy outcome. xoxo.

That person should be tied up the same way! All the food looks YUMMY. The salad looks to die for except I don’t like tomatoes. I’ve tried, but I just can’t…Have fun at your girls’ night!

That absolutely broke my heart and had me tearing up at my desk. I’m just horrified at the abuse people inflict on poor sweet animals. Obvsiously thats the reason I went vegan in the first place…but I just can’t stand the thought that this kind of stuff happens. That person seriously deserves to either be put in jail for life or forced to endure the same kind of torture. I don’t even want to imagine what else they have done. I’m so glad you were there to help. There is a reason it was you who found the pups. I swear 1/2 the people in the world are trying to destroy the world and the other half are trying to save it and clean up the mess. This is just so unfair :(

On another note, be careful! Any kind of weirdo who could possible do this to a defenseless animal is possibly capable of much worse…
