BYOP and comfy carob drink

Hey hey heyyyyy 😀 How are ya? Hope your night’s going well!

Today has been bueno, but I feel a little behind on everything I need to do before we leave! I haven’t made my packing list or anything :/ Time’s creeping up on me—we leave on Thursday! Ay ay ay.

This afternoon, after the gym, I went to The Main Squeeze to get smoothies for Jeni and I.

I decided to BYOP

BYOP = Bring Your Own Protein

I showed up with a little baggie of vanilla sprouted brown rice protein and asked Spence (aka the “Juice Guy”) if he would mind putting my protein in the smoothie. I’m glad he’s super cool, because sometimes people are weirded out by my food requests  😉 Once, my madre’s family went to a Mexican take-out type place (called “Taco Tote”) and she brought a wheat tortilla for them to make my burrito in. That’s love, right there 😀 Have you ever brought your own ingredients into a restaurant??? Am I tacky? Hahah, don’t answer that 😉

I had a Tropcial Superfood Smoothie which contained pineapple, mango, banana, spinach, parsley, apple juice, and Gina’s protein from home a la baggie.

It was rather lovely and I chugged that bad boy down before I met Jeni with her smoothie 😀

Face rockin’ delicious

I came back to the casa, said hi to you guys, then went to teach spin and Zumba.

Both classes were kind of a blur to me today. They were a lot of fun, but I didn’t get to enjoy them as much as usual because I was thinking about all of the junk I need to do this week. Usually life doesn’t get in the way of teaching, but today was just… cloudy. Ya know??

After Zumba, I drove back to the other gym to train Funny quotes lady and munched some leftover defrosted quinoa casserole on the way.

Does Eat, Drink and Be Vegan have any BAD recipes in there?!? I’m fully convinced that they don’t- everything I’ve made from that cookbook has been scrumptious.

When I got home, I really wanted something hot to drink and was not feeling like tea.

Enter the COMFY CAROB DRINK…..

– 1 cup vanilla hemp milk

-1 heaping tbs carob powder

-1.5 packets of Stevia

-1/2 tbs of cinnamon

-pinch of sea salt

  1. Pour the hemp milk into a metal pot and heat on medium-high to scald the milk (you want it to be hot but not boiling)
  2. Once the milk has scalded, remove for heat and whisk in the carob powder, Stevia, cinnamon and sea salt until smooth
  3. Devour 😀

Seriously easy and ridiculously delicious. It was soooo thick and creamy…and comfy!

Something to do: Buy seasonal produce! Not only is it better for the environment, it’s less expensive too!

    The Carob Drink looks really good! Almost like comfort food. I’ve noticed that you make a lot with Carob and I’ve never tried it. You’ve inspired me to go buy some. My favorite Health Food store lady would thank you for adding a new item to my regular purchases 🙂

    Yum! Your food always makes me so hungry. I have a question for you–

    I recently bought an ebook called “Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle” by Tom Venuto. It’s supposedly very reliable. One of his tips is to wake up and do your morning cardio right away..but I read on fitsugar.com today that you aren’t supposed to do that. Any advice?

      hey diane,
      there are mixed reports on that.. some people say to do it first thing when you wake up because you have more energy, others say to do it later on because then you’re burning more calories throughout the night. i say, do it when you can give yourself the best cardio workout. for me, i can do aerobics any time of the day -which is lucky because i teach at different times- but when it comes to running, if i don’t do it first thing in the morning, i won’t run well. so i know that if i’m planning on running, i need to go right when i wake up!
      i definitely think you should do what works best for you and when you can push yourself. for many people that’s first thing in the morning when they aren’t drained from working all day.. and for others it’s the opposite. they get a surge of energy mid-evening.
      do what’s best for you 😀

    Wow, great idea with carob. I have adored carob ever since my Dad used to get us Tiger’s Milk bars- the world’s first “healthy” (not) energy bar many years ago! Must try that milk! Thanks.

    I tried to BYOP at the ‘Bucks and was DENIED. They were probably worried that a subsequent customer would sue them for having an allergic reaction! :-/ Grr at the Bucks. Happily, at a coffee-bar with a blender in the UK accommodated me. 🙂 Yay Brits!

    So not only do we have the same car, I think we have the same COLOR car. Geeze I am such a creeper. 🙂 Holla for Tucson girls and matching cars! I have never brought my own food to a restaurant but it sounds like a good idea. Earlier today I was thinking about bringing my own food to a wedding I am going to tomorrow. Is it tacky to whip out my Tupperware? nahhh. 🙂

    I’ve never brought my own ingredients, but thats totes something i would do. Hey if you want something that they don’t offer i think they should be more then welcoming right? Good for you girl! 🙂

    So cool that Spence was fine with adding in your protein powder from home! The tropical superfood creation sure did sound delish.

    I just bought Eat Drink be Vegan. I’ve only tried one dinner recipe so far but it was good. And I’ve loved the Super Charge Me Cookies ever since Dreena posted the recipe on her blog. I can’t wait to try some others soon.

    Woo-hoo for persimmons being a fall fruit. I can’t wait for those!!

    Last but not least, I can’t believe you are leaving so soon for 105 Degrees. I can’t wait to hear all about your experience.

    Gina, good luck at school! You’ll have a great time and learn so much.

    Your post cheered me up and made me excited thinking about my favorite fall recipe, Pumpkin soup. ust cook some onion and garlic in the bottom of a pan until it’s soft. Plop in a can of organic pumpkin and a can of broth (any kind works). Stir. Then blend the soup in batches so it’s sort of a smoothie consistency. It freezes really well, too.

    Mmm…I’m thinking hot chocolate is in order!

    I take my own dressing and extra veggies all the time. I’m surprised they let you bring your protein in, though. I mean, it touched their blender, what if it was poison!!! 😉

    I agree about EDBV. I still haven’t tried a recipe I didn’t like.

    I bring a lot of my own “food and condiments” out to eat! The number 1 thing I bring is salad dressing, I love to make my own. Being allergic to gluten and wheat I tend to bring a lot of different items. We are the only ones in charge of our health, a girls got to do, what a girls got to do! Priorities!!

    Your comfy carob recipe looks awesome. One time I tried to pour carob into my coffee and it was kinda like a bad coffee grounds floating everywhere kind of experiment and I’ve never tried anything like that again. This gives me hope that with a WHISK it can be done. Good thinkin! Bringing my own food in….well, about 10 years ago I used to have a job where my co-workers wanted to go to a chain bagel place (Einstein’s) and honestly, I cant eat gluten and the rest of the stuff was too fried for my liking and I’d bring my brownbag lunch everyday. I felt kinda weird, but I didnt wanna eat that food…not to mention pay for something I didnt even want to it. I was also like 22 and musta had big kahunas and didnt give a flip 🙂

    yayyyy for apples and pumpkin! I am excited about that…but very sad to be losing some of the better summer fruits (no cantaloupe…don’t leave me!) The juicy blend sounds goooood. Good luck with the to do list!

    WHERE did you find carob powder? I think the fiance would just about die if i made him a carob drink…he LOVES carob!

    Great post today! When I go out to breakfast I bring packets of sugar in the raw and/or truvia. I also sometimes bring vanilla almond breeze. I put it in an insulated baby bottle I had when my daughter used a bottle. It’s PREFECT! It holds 5 oz. Just the right amount for hubby and I to enjoy our coffee dairy free! Nothing like a great B-fast with GOOD COFFEE! 😀

    I realize you just answered this question in a comment above but could you share the brand of carob powder you have please? I bought some raw carob and it tasted like stinky feet. It was AWFUL! I can’t imagine yours tastes like that and I really want to like like carob! Thanks!

      the kind of carob i use isn’t raw– the raw doesn’t taste as good!
      the brand i have is chatfield’s 😀

        I just went back and re-read the comments after seeing the linkback here…b/c I wanna love carob. Mine has always been raw. So I have like 75 bucks worth of various brands of raw carob. Thinking it would be so good. But like the other girl said, it’s nasty. Ok, now I am thinking I need non-raw. Ah-hah!

    I LOVE that you BYOP! I have definitely done that but never, like, with a tortilla…sooooooo genius!
    When we go out for Mexican or Indian food I always bring a gang of veggie sticks so I can eat the salsa/eggplant/whatever sin chips/naan!

    I always pack my NuNaturals stevia packets and True Lemon packets in my purse. Once brought my own low carb R.W. Garcia Flax & Soy chips to a Mexican restaurant to the embarrassment/laughing delight of my dining companions! Rock on!

    I always pack my own stevia packets but at Starbucks, you can ask for their protein/fiber powder to be added to any drink. It is whey protein but each serving has 30 calories and 6 grams of protein. Every little bit helps!
