Making plans and Indian feast

Hey everyone! Hope you had a fabulous day 😀

Afternoon snack was my favorite healthy popcorn (popped in a paper bag for <2 min and topped with nutritional yeast and sea salt) and a side of America’s Next Top Model:

007

I love the fact that ANTM is on Oxygen basically all day—it’s one of those shows (like Bridezillas) that I could watch anytime 😉

I called my madre and talked to her for a while because the puppy situation had me a little stressed (on top of getting ready for school) and I needed her motherly reality check. She’s so good at that… I told her about how overwhelmed I was feeling and that this happened at the worst possible time since I’m leaving for school so soon and she said: “Gina, this is life. That’s what happens. Just when you think you have everything under control, God throws you a curve ball. The puppies are both alive and healthy, you and Tom [the pilot] are healthy. Things could be much worse and everything will work out the way they’re supposed to.” Why are moms so good at that?! When I got off the phone with her, I felt exponentially better.

I got everything packed up and went to teach two sweaty classes: spin and Zumba. Both was wonderful as usual, and then I came home to the pilot, puppers and a mug of Apricot Caramel Torte tea (from Teavana- props to Megan for turning me onto this expensive hobby).

008

We spent some time making phone calls –the puppy situation is almost figured out!– and had a late-night dinner.

You’ll never guess what I had:

002

(I had to use an old pic since the one I took was blurry. My new camera should be here TOMORROW!! Wahoo!)

Baigan bhartha! Currently, I’m with Indian food child.. and I love it 😉

Tomorrow should be pretty chill- I’m hoping for a run in the morning and weights, plans to get juice with Megan, clean the casa, make some macaroons, and dinner + movies with the girls.

Sorry for the short post- I have a wounded puppy baby to heat pack 😀

xoox,

Gina

A question: I’m going to start working on a P&R page (preguntas and respuestas)—are there any questions you’d like to see on there? I plan to include my workout style/schedule, eating philosophy, etc. but if there’s anything you’d like me to add, please let me know! Thank ya

Mamas are so good for advice like that. 🙂

So sorry for all the troubles with the puppies. We had a similar situation with two kittens. 🙁 It’ll work out in the end.

Your tea looks divine. Yum! Enjoy your new camera! I think if it’s the one you said you were gonna get, that I have the same one but in silver. I hope you like it. Q & A session with Gina…oh let’s just get real personal real quick 🙂 When are you having babies? (I can so see you as the most loving, wonderful mother and motherhood is the best experience ever!) Where will you live if it’s not in V-Town? Ya know, stuff like that. Feel free to ignore of course! I would never expect anyone to divulge that sorta stuff, but that’s what people wanna know. Well, ok, I do 🙂

Does anyone else feel a little thrown off knowing that The Pilot’s name is not, in fact, The Pilot? 😀

  4. e. on August 26, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    And I want that cup.

  5. Kristin on August 26, 2009 at 10:52 pm

Never would’ve guessed The Pilot’s name was Tom, he just doesn’t look like a Tom… 😉

  6. Karen on August 26, 2009 at 11:23 pm

I think this is the first time that I have left a comment, but I absolutely love your blog. Your posts are well written, educational, motivating, and fun. Finding out The Pilot is Tom was second only to knowing that Mr. Big is John! Thank you for all of the effort you put into your site.

    Gina,

You are an awesome dog mommy and you deserve kudos for that! As far as the new page, my question would be “How do you resist cravings so well?” I eat healthy 90% of the time, but then will go off the deep end – cookies, candy, cake, etc. I am in awe of your dedication!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 9:17 am

that’s a great question! i’ll definitely add it on there 🙂

  9. Annabananabomb on August 27, 2009 at 12:34 am

    Gina,

First of all I just want to say you are absolutely beautiful inside and out! I’ve been lurking and learning for a while but thought I’d pop my little head up and say g’day!

Quick question for yourself and other raw/clean/vegan etc etc eaters – what’s the go with soy? Should I be drinking it? I bought rice milk but it’s blegh 😛

      hey girl,
thank you for such a sweet comment and for saying hi! i love when lurkers step out of lurkdom 😉
      here’s a little on why i don’t eat soy products: http://fitnessista.com/?p=359
i’m just trying to eat as cleanly as i can and the fact that it raises estrogen levels alarms me, as i’ve had some breast health issues in the past. there are a lot of benefits from consuming soy, so it’s really a personal choice.
maybe try almond milk?? vanilla hemp milk is delicious too 😀

I was so confused when you said Tom. Til I saw the pilot. I agree that it was like finding out Big’s name!!

  12. Erica on August 27, 2009 at 5:39 am

Mom’s provide such a good reality check! I always call my mama when I’m going a little nutty. Glad the situation is almost figured out and that you had a great date night 🙂

  13. angieinatlanta on August 27, 2009 at 6:13 am

Aw, mom’s are the best for putting everything in perspective! Glad the madre helped!

  14. Pam on August 27, 2009 at 6:23 am

    Love the princess mug! 😀

I second the soy question; I have 1-2 servings of soy per day (soy milk, soy in other products probably).

    Thanks!!

  15. Shelby on August 27, 2009 at 6:26 am

I feel the same way about ANTM! It’s always on and I never get sick of watching it. I must make some cheezy popcorn to go with it next time.

Aww, your momma sounds so wise. I’m glad you feel a bit better.

Tom? The Pilot fits so much better 😉

  16. Lauren on August 27, 2009 at 7:02 am

Mom’s are the best at reminding us of these things in life. I love that my madre can always make me feel better in any situation, just by reminding me of how fortunate I am for my health, happiness and love. WHy does it just sound so much more beleiveable when it comes from mom?

Hope the pup is better….she’s in my prayers! 🙂

  17. rhodeygirl on August 27, 2009 at 8:13 am

I am wondering how you are doing with your new diet as a result of all the extra classes you’ve been teaching this summer. do you feel better than ever? is it hard to eat enough? hard to stop eating?

I find that when I am exercising a lot I do compensate by eating more, but then sometimes I am so ravenous that it seems hard to stop! I have learned in the last year how to balance out exercise vs. diet, but I wonder how other people handle that- especially when one of those variables changes!

Also, I read your blog too much. Last night I said to PB: “Let’s go for a run-izzle” hahahahaahah

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 9:13 am

      hey girl! run-izzle… hahaha!
i think the thing with me is that i eat to exercise, i don’t exercise to eat. i just love working out/teaching so much and have to make sure i’m getting enough calories in to protect my metabolism. sometimes i’m starving and other times i need to make myself eat to ensure i’m replacing most of the calories i’ve burned.
the way i’ve been eating has been a huge help with my teaching schedule- i have so much more energy and don’t have that weighed down feeling. i definitely do feel better than ever. i’m interested to see how all of this changes when i go to school– i’m only going to work out an hour a day since i won’t be teaching instead of the usual 2-3 hours.

  18. Mindy on August 27, 2009 at 8:27 am

Hi Gina! I stumbled across your blog by accident really. I was searching for the nutritional value for the Nurse’s Bialy breakfast at the Good Egg, when…there you were!
Anyway, I live in Tucson and I absolutely love your blog! I’m addicted! I do have a question for you. I work out first thing in the morning and I usually do this on an empty stomach because it seems to work out okay for me, but could this be making my body hold on to unwanted fat? What’s your take on this? I always eat a normal breakfast directly afterwards. Should I eat a little something before my workout as well?
Thanks and keep up the great blogging!!!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 9:09 am

      hey mindy!
so cool you live in tucso.. i miss it (and the good egg!) like crazy 😀
i think it’s a good idea to have a little something in your stomach before you work out.. for some people, it makes not feel well while they’re working out, so just make sure it’s something small that will kick start your metabolism for the day. even if it’s half a banana with a smear of almond butter, something is better than nothing 🙂

  19. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on August 27, 2009 at 8:39 am

WAHOO! Indian food!! I still haven’t caved and made baigan bartha, mostly because I know I’ll eat a TON of it 🙂

Just remember to breathe… so often, just taking a moment and really relaxing can help put things in perspective.

  20. kirsten on August 27, 2009 at 8:48 am

whoa! finding out the pilot’s name was like finding out Big’s name! Gina and Tom sounds very cute 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 9:07 am

thanks- that’s why we love bon jovi.. he sings about “tommy and gina” pretty often 😉

  21. Jess on August 27, 2009 at 8:52 am

I love the princess mug, super cute! Also I’m SO craving indian food after reading this. I know I have to get DH to try it ASAP!

  22. Lindsey512 on August 27, 2009 at 8:57 am

    I agree totally about ANTM!

  23. Lindsey512 on August 27, 2009 at 9:01 am

Oh and I’m with Rhodeygirl, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how to maintain or continue to lose fat, whatever your goal is, when you feel like your exercise routine is causing ravenous hunger! I did not anticipate this happening with only 4 days a week of under 60 min. of cardio (I also weight train 3x, but not sure if that’s causing the hunger), but it has!

  24. jenna on August 27, 2009 at 9:04 am

LOL i also felt shocked when you told us the pilots name! Indian sounds so goood!!!! I hope your baby feels better :-/ I know everything will work out for ya!

  25. K on August 27, 2009 at 9:26 am

Those reality TV marathons just have a way of sucking me in! I’m obsessed with the Disney princess mug – I’d register to run in that race purely for the mug (and medal).

Glad you got the pupper situation almost figured out!!

  26. Sarah on August 27, 2009 at 9:35 am

Apricot Caramel Torte tea sounds delicious. I’m going to have to check it out.

Your mom is awesome! And she’s right, it will all work out. Glad you are almost done figuring things out with the puppies. Best wishes!

  27. Laura W on August 27, 2009 at 9:50 am

Moms are always right! My older sister (she’s 29, I’m 25) is always right, too… sometimes I’ll call her for advice, and she’ll say, “Laura, it’s your life and you just have to decide. Not every decision is easy to make.” Always puts things into perspective!

Excited to hear what movie you guys end up seeing! I’ve had so many to see on my list this summer.

  28. rhodeygirl on August 27, 2009 at 9:57 am

    thanks gina! 😀

  29. rhodeygirl on August 27, 2009 at 9:57 am

I, on the other hand, eat to exercise and exercise to eat. Sometimes one is more powerful than the other 😀 😀 😀

  30. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) on August 27, 2009 at 10:57 am

Seriously, why are moms so good at that?! I definitely depend on mom to put things in perspective when I just can’t find a way to do so myself. I only hope my skizzles are as good as hers when I’m a mommy one day!

Best of luck with the puppy situacion, guapa.

  31. Melinda on August 27, 2009 at 11:01 am

Moms are so great to talk to 🙂 Hope you get the puppy situation figured out as well.

Have you ever tried popcorn on the stove with some organic butter- it takes extra time, but it’s awesome! 🙂 and I love Nut. yeast on everything!

  32. julie on August 27, 2009 at 11:10 am

Moms are GREAT with calming advice 🙂 glad she got a calming word in! She sounds like a very wise woman!

I’m delurking, too. Been loving this blog for months now. I so admire your, hmm, food convictions? Can I say food convictions? Anyway, thanks for talking about your lifestyle so positively and making it look glamorous!

I’m delurking not just to tell you how cool you are, but with a question: I want to know about how you manage The Pilot’s eating differently than you. You seem to have it worked out beautifully, but I wonder about the transition, or things that still frustrate either one of you. I’ve been trying to transition to a mostly-vegan whole foods diet for months now, and while I love it, my husband’s not so keen. If I don’t cook something geared for him, he either eats nothing or survives on Ritz crackers and pink lemonade. If I do cook for him, I end up eating junky too and feeling hopeless. So frustrating!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 2:02 pm

      hooray for de-lurking! 😀
it wasn’t difficult to mesh our eating patterns.. just takes a little planning. our main meal is almost always something i can eat– it either has some type of fish or is vegan. for the pilot, i’ll add cheese and meat to his dish (man-ify it) and if it’s not possible, i’ll just cook him some meat on the side. sometimes i’ll make meals just for him, but take the veggies out before i add meat to his dish so that i can do my own thing with it. like if i make him meat tacos, beans and guacamole, i’ll have a mexican salad with all of the taco toppings, beans, veggies, salsa and guacamole and will crumble a sunshine burger on top. if you find a meal you’ll know he’ll love, you can make his in a separate pan and at the same time, make a healthy version for you.
      hope this helps a little!

  35. Katie on August 27, 2009 at 11:48 am

    Aren’t moms great about that??

  36. Mia on August 27, 2009 at 11:57 am

Hey Gina! I love your blog and follow it daily. I eat very similar to you and am at the point where I am still trying to get past everyone’s opinions (and looks) about the way I eat. My husband doesn’t care, but I feel like everyone else looks at me like I’m crazy! Anyway… I just have a few questions for you. First, do you use any oil or anything to pop your popcorn with or do you just stick the popcorn in a paper bag into the microwave and hit start? Second, what are the health benefits behind nutritional yeast? What would you compare the taste to? Finally, did you post a recipe for your dehydrated macaroons that I just overlooked? I would love to make some! Thanks!

Oh, and not sure if this product would interest you or inspire you to make some but a girl sells these raw bars at our local farmers market. When I saw them I thought of you. You can check them out here: http://www.nuttygoodness.net Her original is 100% raw.

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 1:58 pm

      hey mia!
ope, no oil.. just fold the top of the bag a couple of times and press start 😀
nutritional yeast has protein, b-complex vitamins and folate and also is low in cals/salt/fat. it tastes kind of cheesy– it’s totally delicious!
i haven’t posted the macaroon recipe.. it’s top secret 😉
thanks for the link– i’ll definitely check them out!

  37. Pam (Highway to Health) on August 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm

What your mom had to say is so true. Mom’s can be the best sometimes, can’t they??

  38. Jenna on August 27, 2009 at 12:59 pm

don’t you love when moms just make everything better! i doooo 🙂

  39. Therese on August 27, 2009 at 1:10 pm

I have probably seen every ANTM season several times, but everytime an episode is on I can’t help but watch!!! My husband HATES Tyra Banks though, so this is not something we will watch together lol.

  40. Ashley on August 27, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Teavana is a horrible addiction for me! I have a cabinet completely devoted to teas! It’s so hard to resist when walking by at the mall.

Can you explain popping popcorn in a plain brown bag?

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 1:56 pm

hey! of course– you just put 1/8 cup popcorn in a brown paper bag and fold the top a few times; pop for 2 minutes (it will take less than that but just listen for the popping to slow down)

  41. Mia on August 27, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Thanks for the reply! Let me know when you plan to publish and release a cookbook/ recipe book. I’ll be the first to buy if you give your macaroon recipe!

  42. Mandy on August 27, 2009 at 3:26 pm

    Gina,
I have a quesstion for you. What are your favorite kitchen tools? I know you have discussed your spiralizer and the dehydrator. It would be nice to see a list of your favorite tools for preparing such healthy meals.
    Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2009 at 4:23 pm

thats a great idea! thanks! 😀

  43. Aka on August 27, 2009 at 5:40 pm

I have been wondering about the logistics of your workout schedule. Since you fit exercise in multiple times during the day, when do you find time to shower? Do you just stay in your gym clothes all day, and then shower & change into regular clothes in the evening after your last class or workout? Sorry if this is kind of a personal question…I swear I’m not questioning your hygiene, haha! But I struggle with figuring out when to shower & wear “normal” clothes when I want to do multiple workouts during the day.

  44. Jenny on August 31, 2009 at 6:36 pm

what is it about ANTM that makes it so addicting? perhaps it’s Miss J’s crazy get-ups.. or Nigels sexy accent. regardless, i cant stop watching it!

    • Fitnessista on August 31, 2009 at 9:10 pm

      hahah i love miss j.. and mister j is a beefcake 😀
