Your chili looks so colorful and “fallish”; it has to be good. I think my kids will like it too. Thanks for the recipe.

After reading your last post, I found a similar recipe online, went to Target to buy a slow cooker, and am happily awaiting this chili as my very first crock pot meal. Already smells wonderful!!

  4. Lita on November 17, 2009 at 8:41 pm

After reading your posts I discovered that eggs could be cooked in the microwave. I know I’m late and all but I can’t seem to figure it out. Do you scramble it and cover it or just scramble it and leave it for a bit?

P.S. That chili looks sooooo good! I should really invest in a slow cooker. It makes life easy and food fabulous.

I can’t get enough of the combo of black beans and sweet potatoes (or either on its own actually, lol). And now that I bought a timer for my slow cooker, you can bet I’ll be making this in the near future! Thanks for a great recipe Gina!!

  19. Suzanne on November 18, 2009 at 12:01 am

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeey Gina (said like heeeey brother, arrested development style)
Random comment: I totally thought of you tonight because I was studying at B&N, saw a fox of a man, and proceeded to muse over what a good place a bookstore is to meet fellows, for the obv reasons, and then I chuckled to myself thinking how many other girls/people in general share the bookstore gameplan……then I turned to internal reflection, wondering, um…is it weird that I spontaenously thought of a blogger—-in a wholly non-blog or otherwise online related context, mind—whom I’ve never met but with whom I feel a kindred spirit? I concluded that 1) yeah, it is pretty weird and 2) I don’t really care that it’s weird.
Random question: your hectic schedules make me curious–approx how many hours of sleep do you get each night? as with food and exercise, everyone’s needs are different, but I am curious! have a wonderful night

    • Fitnessista on November 18, 2009 at 8:15 am

      hellllooooooo 😀
totally not weird! so cool you saw a super hottie at beefcake and noble 😉 i didn’t mention this on the blog, but there was one guy who worked there that my friend and i would go ask for “help” looking for books 🙂 i totally feel ya on the kindred spirit thing- i wish we could finally hang out!
every night, i get a full 8 hours of sleep. if i don’t, i’m cranky, hungry, tired and can’t teach very well at night. so i usually go to bed at 11 and wake up at 7

  20. Amy L on November 18, 2009 at 12:22 am

Oh, That looks good! And relatively inexpensive!

  21. Lisa on November 18, 2009 at 1:22 am

I’ve been reading your blog for a while (saw it in a magazine)and today I finally decided to try almond butter since you talk it up so much. It is delicious! Much, much, much better than the natural peanut butter I had been eating. Thanks for the inspiration!

  22. Dara (MyVeryFirstKitchen) on November 18, 2009 at 2:48 am

Sweet potatoes are amazzzing! Do you think that your recipe could be adapted to not be made in a slow cooker? I do not have one!! 🙁 It is on my list for the holiday season!! I can never make any recipes involving sweet potatoes b/c I like them so much on their own! I know that if I try something though that new flavors will bring a whole new dimension to the sweet taters..righ?!

    Thanks for sharing!!

I made this 2 nights ago and cannot thank you enough. I love that it is a vegetarian dish made in the slow-cooker, most of my slow-cooker recipes are meat based. My husband tried it tonight and absolutely loved it. Thanks for sharing!

I browse a ton of food blogs so to tell if they match my taste-buds, I like to try out one of their recipes…. This sweet potato black bean chili is AMAZING. I had it for lunch three days straight and already told friends about your blog and this recipe! I’m now going to try out the breakfast cookie and vegan cookies. Can’t wait! Just wondering… what is the nutritional value/calorie count on your breakfast cookie and smoothies?

  36. Michelle on December 9, 2010 at 9:57 am

    Oh.My.Gosh.

This recipe kicks butt! I made it last night and doubled the recipe since I’ve got a few hungry and large appetites to satisfy. It is phenomenal when cooking, phenomenal hot, and phenomenal even cold! The aroma is to die for. I made a couple of changes because I added a 1/2 small tin of tomato paste and 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg (to the recipe as it appears on this page, I actually added 1 small can of tomato paste and 1 teaspoon of nutmeg since I doubled the recipe). I didn’t do it in the slow cooker because mine is too small for the batch I made, so instead I worked it with an electric frypan (deep dutch-oven style) and let it simmer at 275 for and hour, stirring often. It was a smashing success!

I had to eat it cold the next day, however, because it is too smelly for the office. And you can bet I’m having it for dinner again tonight! This is a keeper!

  37. lee on August 29, 2011 at 12:33 pm

This was delicious! My kitchen smelled so good while it cooked, and both my fiance and I were surprised at how filling it was without any meat. Thank you for sharing!

  38. Taylor on October 6, 2011 at 6:53 pm

I made this and added a T of nutmeg….so good!
as leftovers i served it over some mashed sweet potatoes, also thickened it up…my new fave!

  39. Melinda Nemet on October 19, 2011 at 10:01 am

The sweet potatoe black bean chili was a BIG hit! Flavors were wonderful and added a sunnyside egg ontop which made the chili creamy yummy! It wasn’t something that I would make but definately glad I did will be making this part of a fall meal:) Thanks!

    • Melinda on October 19, 2011 at 10:04 am

Oh and I forgot to add I didn’t have any black beans on hand so I used a can of kidney beans, I also didn’t have Cayene so I used a pinch of crushed red pepper and it still tasted wonderful!

  40. Anna on November 18, 2011 at 6:36 pm

So glad you re-posted this recipe in a recent post… made it yesterday using soaked dry black beans – took a little bit longer but was AMAZING – so delicious and full of flavor.

  43. Emma on February 5, 2012 at 6:01 pm

Every time you link to this, I wanna make it… Then I remember I don’t have a slow cooker! Guidance on making it on the stove top?

    • Fitnessista on February 5, 2012 at 11:18 pm

do the onions and bell pepper first, then add everything else. bring up to a boil, then reduce heat to med low, cover and cook for about 45 minutes

  47. Lindsey on December 22, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Hi! 🙂 I was wondering if you knew what the actual serving size was? Like a cup 1/2 etc.. And also the calories for that serving size this would really help me out! I’m not real sure how to figure that out when it is multiple servings of a large recipe! If you could help me out that would be great because I can’t find an answer anywhere! Thank you so much! I love your blog and I check it daily you are such an inspiration!!

    • Fitnessista on December 22, 2012 at 11:59 pm

this recipe is considerably low in calories, so i like to add in some goat cheese and/or avocado. i’d say it’s about 6 small servings, 4 hefty ones
      xoxo

    Hi Gina!
Is it a tablespoon or a teaspoon of the cumin, paprika and chili powder? Can’t wait to try this!

    • Fitnessista on September 29, 2013 at 5:45 pm

      if it’s a big “T” = tablespoon
