Hiiiii guys :D How are ya?

Things are bueno over here- I love reading your guesses about what’s going on. I’m just gonna throw it out there that some of you might have hit the nail on the head, if you know what I mean ;)

I actually just got back from a fun little meeting… the proverbial ball is a-rollin’. SO STOKED :D

So it’s been a little lacking with the recipes lately in Fitnessista land, so I figured it was high time for a new RAW RECIPE!

Not-Chicken Salad

salad

Serves 2

- 1/4 C raw sunflower seeds

-1/4 cup raw almonds

-1/2 carrot

-1 celery rib

-1 green onion, minced

-1 t tumeric

-1 t savory

-1/2 t poultry seasoning

-1/4 t thyme

-sprinkle of garlic powder

-1/8 C water

-sea salt and pepper to taste

1. In a food processor, pulse the carrot and celery until finely chopped, but not mushy. Set aside.

2. Place the remaining ingredients (except for the green onion) in the food processor and pulse until mixed well and finely chopped. The mixture will be crumbly.

3. Taste and adjust seasonings as necessary.

4. Combine the carrot and celery mixture with the nut and seasoning mixture.

5. Stir in the green onion

6. Serve atop a bed of organic greens:

That was my lonchi today –the sandwich version- and it was ahhhhmazing :D Let me know if any of you give it a try!

I’ve actually eaten all raw today which hasn’t been happening as much since it’s been colder. Needless to say, I feel pretty good :)

I had some fruit before hitting up the gym for a 50 minute cardio sesh:

fruit

30 minutes of sprints, steady state and hill walking on the RAD (Revolving Apparatus of Death) and then 20 minutes on the elliptical, pedaling to the music (a faster pace with upbeat songs and higher resistance/slower pace for slow songs). It was a great workout!

When I got home, I made a chocolate-covered strawberry protein shake:

shake

- 1 C almond milk

-1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior

-1 T raw cacao agave syrup (from Katie)

-1 T raw cacao powder

-1 C frozen organic strawberries

-1 t vanilla

-pinch sea salt

-foodgasms ;)

Delectable.

Well I’m off to answer emails –mayjah apologies to all of you whom I haven’t responded to yet, I’m on a mission to get back to you!!!- and then do yoga before heading to work.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: What’s your favorite protein smoothie recipe?? I try to get new things into the rotation but I always end up going back to the standards. I’d love some new ideas!

I LOOOVE all my protein shakes with frozen bananas – the consistency is amazing. My favorite flavor is BSN coconut-chocolate, and with a frozen banana and peanut butter it is like dessert!

My current favorite with the smoothies (and i JUST got my sun warrior yesterday, yay!) is: 2 cups baby spinach, 1 scoop vanilla sunwarrior, 1 cup frozen papaya, ground flax, and agave to taste. Yum! I also sometimes switch out the papaya and replace with frozen acai, it’s so good.

I also made a chocolatey goodness the other day with: 2 cups baby spinach, 2 tsp coco powder, frozen papaya or acai (acai makes it even more chocolatey), agave to taste, pinch cinnamon, dash vanilla. Mmm :)

My favorite combo is unsweetened chocolate almond milk with either a banana or strawberries. It’s not a protein smoothie but you could easily add protein powder to it!

LOVE that recipe – sounds delicious!!

I just made a smoothie with spinach, frozen blueberries and dark cherries, 0% greek yogurt, “So Delicious” unsweetened coconut milk, chia seeds, raw cacao and maca powder and 1TB vega protein powder (chocolate flavor)… tasted like dark chocolate covered berries :) Yum! Also like swapping out the chocolate-y powders and using a little vega smoothie infusion powder with spinach, frozen blueberries, peaches, and red grapes!

my go to: 2 scoops naturade whey protein, 1c almond milk, stevia, 2tbsp dark cocoa powder and a handful of spinach. so so tasty and simple!

when i have more time: my pumpkin pie smoothie: 1/4c canned pumpkin, 3/4c almond milk, 1/2 avocado, and 1scoop naturade whey protein + stevia and loads of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and a hint of ginger!

The not so chicken salad looks wonderful Gina, I’m going to try it at the weekend, what could I substitute for poultry seasonin and savory? I can’t find it in the stores here. The onion bread looks great, how many servings does it make? My vitamix arrived today, woo hoo!! Have almonds soaking at the moment and will try making almond milk after healthy eating class in the Happy Pear. Have a great day.

Fitnessista February 9, 2010 at 1:24 pm

enjoy the vitamix! you’ll love it
for the onion bread, i half the recipe and it makes two two-slice servings
instead of poultry seasoning and savory, add in some rosemary, marjoram and celery salt

I am ashamed to say but I just use the whey isolate (chocolate – my favorite) together with some milk and water…I am always on the go, so its convenient to just throw it in the bag and add the liquids later!

I’ve been making a vanilla peach smoothie lately — 1 peach (or 2 small ones), 1 c. spinach, 1 T vanilla flavored rice protein powder, and enough unsweetened almond milk to make it thin enough to drink. Sometimes if I’m feeling really crazy, I’ll throw a banana in there :)

I just saw organic strawberries on sale at Publix — I’ll have to give your choco-covered strawberry one a try!

Jenn @ Livewellfit February 9, 2010 at 2:31 pm

I’ve been mixing up my smoothies and incorporating more mango these days. They are almost as creamy as a banana when you add almond milk. So funny, just yesterday I created a whole page on my blog about smoothies b/c I’m so obsessed with them right now!!

My current fav:
- banana
- about 1/2 mashed avocado
- chocolate Shakeology (the protein powder that I use these days!)
- 1/4 c. greek yogurt if I’m feeling extra hungry
- 3/4 c.- 1 c. almond milk

Gahhhh you’re killing me with this secret. Macaroons+ chef shoes+ map/location/something. You’re going to be selling your macaroons for retail somewhere in Valdosta. You’re going to open your own raw “bakery” (or fakery?) in Valdosta. Uhhh! You bet I’ll be contemplating this in my next class.

Oooh I need to bookmark this page for smoothie recipes. I’m still searching for a fave.

Have a faaab tuesday!! xoxoxo

My favorite smoothie combo is:

1/8 – 1/4 cup blueberries
1 tsp spirulina
1 tsp flax seed oil
dash of stevia

SUPER weird, maybe creepy question, but how is the raw onion bread on your breath? I find that raw onions equal bad breath (not that that stops me, most of the time), and was wondering if the raw onion bread did the same?

Reply

oh yeah, it will give you DRAGON BREATH. i usually have some gum afterwards :)

Kyle February 9, 2010 at 3:42 pm

My FAV is the following: (Makes one HUGE ~250 calorie smoothie)
-1/2 cup almond milk
-3/4 cup water
(Pour those into the blender, then add ice until filled to the 2.5 cup line)
- 1/3 – 1/2 cup pureed pumpkin/ acorn squash
-1 scoop Peanut Butter chocolate Spiru-tein
-1/2 scoop TJ’s soy protein (vanilla)
-1 TBSP Rice protein powder (used to use NOW Foods brand, but they discontinued it :( )
-vanilla extract
-stevia to taste (I use 5 little scoops from the 1 oz. jars of powder)
-cinnamon
-instant coffee crystals
-2 tbsp cocoa powder
-1/8 tsp xanthan gum
-1/4 tsp guar gum
-1 tsp soy lecithin granules (optional)

blend until FILLED with fluffy airy goodness and ENJOY. THE BOMB.

My fav as of yet involves the homemade rice milk I made in my vitamix – (just cooked brown rice & water!). I usually do a combo of rice milk, frozen bananas & canned unsweetened pumpkin with a healthy dose of cinnamon and some kind of nut butter or raw, soaked cashews for protein. I also like to do a PB&J version with frozen strawberries and peanut butter. I love my smoothies… and my Vita Mix even more!

Susan D February 9, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I don’t drink protein smoothies, but that is because I don’t know what to try and when to drink it. Should I drink it before or after a workout, or can I drink it anytime?

Also, do you drink almond milk because you don’t drink cow’s dairy? Ever try goat milk (since I know you eat goat cheese)?

Love the blog!

Reply

Fitnessista February 9, 2010 at 5:43 pm

i’d drink it after a workout, or as part of a meal
and yes, i drink almond milk instead of cow’s.. goat milk freaks me out for some reason, but i’d probably try it :)

Reply

Sammi February 9, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I have two smoothies that I can’t stop drinking!

My favorite:
Chocolate soy milk, ice, strawberries, half banana, and jay robb chocolate whey protein isolate

My 2nd favorite:
Chocolate soy milk (always the best base imo), 1 banana, ice, 2 scoops crunchy pb, and a tiny bit agave nectar. Sometimes I add extra protein with whey.. depends on my mood!

I much prefer these to fruit smoothies.. I’m a chocolate fanatic! And chocolate milk is good after a workout so I’ll use that as my excuse ;)

chocolate protein powder

Skim or soy milk
Ice

My favorite shake lately is vanilla egg white protein powder, vanilla extract (or actual vanilla bean), unsweetened vanilla hemp milk and a frozen banana. Sometimes I throw a fudge baby in for kicks! Kinda like the ones from Dairy Queen…but healthy :)

my favorite is:
Vanilla Soymilk
chocolate protien powder
coffee grounds (they arent grainy when all blended)
and ice
I find the coffee hides the taste of anything I dont like in the protien powder and it gives me a little pick me up.

Hi Gina,
I LOVE all of the raw recipes. I am about to purchse my first dehydrator and a Vitamix–SO excited! I have a weird question–where did you get the glass straw and how do you clean it? (I have seen stainless steel straws on other blogs, and although I love the idea of NOT using plastic straws, I am afraid I wouldn’t be able to get a glass one clean!
