Sup bloggies :D How are ya?

I’m pretty bueno over here :) It’s been so much fun to read your reader’s quizzes! It’s cool to get to know more about all of you, especially since you know almost everything about me ;)

This morning started off with a bowl o’ oats:

and a booty-kicking Boot Camp class.

One of my co-workers told me I killed her (she did AWESOME though). I like to see people sweat, mmm k? :)

Snack was a lovely green juice from my friend Spence at Main Squeeze.

I took the puppers with me to get juice and we stopped at PetSmart to get them some treats. The LIVE for the place and start squealing with delight as soon as we pull into the mall parking lot :D

So a reader suggested that I compare one of my meals from when I first started blogging to today’s eats. I figured breakfast would be an excellent comparison :D

Today’s breakfast:

oats

Superfood Oats with

-1/3 C oat bran

-1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior

-1 T goji berries

-1/2 T cacao nibs

-1/2 T maca

-cinnamon + Stevia

-1/2 T almond butter

Nutritional stats: 357 cals, 11g fat, 118.52 sodium, 43.96carbs, 12g sugar, 8.1g fiber, 26.29g protein

Savory Oats with

-1/2 C oatmeal

- Laughing Cow cheese wedge

-pop egg (what my family calls an “over easy” egg)

-chives and hot sauce

Nutritional stats: 254 cals, 9.5g fat, 324.62 sodium, 28.94 carbs, 1.9g sugar, 4g fiber, 13.49g protein

So what’s changed over the past two years??

Looking back, even though my photography has gotten a lot better (heh heh), I’d still say that the savory oats combo is still a great choice for b-fast. (Note: I had eaten a whole wheat tortilla w PB that day before running and then came back and had oats, so it was more like the 2nd part of bfast- if you were going to have it for a whole meal, I’d add some fruit on the side, a salad, or something else to “beef” it up a little over the 300 calorie mark)

-I prefer goat’s dairy over cow’s now, so I wouldn’t roll with the Laughing Cow anymore (but would sub goat cheese). I think they need to make a Laughing Goat cheese :)

-I need to get back to eating *whole* eggs. I’ve been having a TON of whites lately (for protein), but need to remember that most of the nutrients are in the yolk

-I have a LOT more fun with food now. I’ve learned about so many new ingredients (hello, goji berries, cacao nibs, maca, etc) and have been able to experiment!

-I’ve gotten better at putting together filling, whole meals. Look at the fiber and protein in today’s combo! Baller.

-Not sure what changed with my tastebuds, but thinking about savory oats makes me gag now. I used to enjoy them so much, but something turned me off… so I’m hoping I can give them a try again in the near future, because it really is an awesome way to switch up everyday oat combos

-When I first started the blog, I was still getting into my maintenance groove. I was still a little apprehensive of adding sugary things (like dried fruit) and always used fake sugars instead of the real stuff. Switching over to maintenance mode can be a tricky deal, but I’m happy to say that making the switch over to REAL food was way worth it. Food tastes so much better, especially since I got rid of the “diet”, “packaged” and processed stuff

If you looked at your eats from two years ago, what would you notice?

I’m off to lift some weights, then teaching Zumba, Abs, then dinner with the girls <3

My eating probably hasn’t changed much in the past two years. I continue to eat very healthfully. If anything, I’ve become a little more accepting of convenience health foods such as stevia and frozen Amy’s pizzas. :D

I love looking back and comparing!

The most noticeable change from 5 years ago to today (for me) is the balance I have in my life now and the peace I have with food. Back then I would binge on pizza, then nearly starve myself with just raw veggies because of guilt… which would ultimately lead to another binge. UGH. Frustrating and unhealthy, right?

Today I have a healthy relationship with food. I eat in a healthy way, and allow myself treats without “going of the deep end” due to deprivation. I’m so glad to be where I am now!

I’ve changed so much in the past two years! This time last year I was in the depths of my eating disorder (basically eating nothing) but two years ago I was the typical garbage-disposal-like teenager: endless bowls of cereal, granola bars, sandwiches, ice cream, Poptarts… I ate everything! I’m still amazed how I was able to maintain a healthy weight eating all that junk… I don’t want to go back to eating junk, but I would love to repair my mindset and my metabolism to the point where I could eat that number of calories again.

yes, but it’s plant derived instead of chemical derived- much easier to digest

what would you recommend for a “healthy” natural sweetener? (i am scared of all fake sugars even plant derived lol)
honey? agave syrup? brown sugar?

i like sucanat- it’s unrefined brown sugar :)
agave, honey, maple syrup and dates are all good choices though

I totally bought goat Gouda laughing cow cubes ( more like squares) over Christmas when I went home. Maybe it’s available in Canada and not in the states. They were so good!!!

AH. Two years ago I was a cereal addict: honey bunches of oats specifically. I used to eat only cereal, fruit, Greek yogurt, peanut butter and honey…a weird “living on my own pseudo poverty/restricting diet”

Now I eat a larger variety of foods, more vegetables (tons more leafy greens)less dairy and no refined grains. More well balanced meals in general…I’ve totally kicked the cereal addiction.

I love this post!!!! I have experienced the same thing with regards to the maintenance, hesitant-towards-sugar feelings and it’s good to see I’m not the only one. For the record, superfood oats look much nicer than savoury oats! :)

Your oats put me to shame! Haha. I’m working towards getting to the place you are in your maintenance phase. I always seem to yo-yo. I think I figured out a way to get things right this time. I need to start breaking some mental “rules” that I’ve created from over 20 years of dieting. Glad you reached your happy place! :)

Looking back, I definitely eat a lot healthier now. I wasn’t completely unhealthy two years ago, just a bit too carby heavy and not too heavy on the veggies. I’ve definitely gotten a lot more creative in the kitchen and incorporate a lot more whole foods in my diet now. In fact, most of my food are whole foods.

This is where I am now, and I’m freaking inside. I bumped back up to 1600 cals a day since I was at 12-1300 to lose. Two days later, I’m up a little. EEK. Part of me says to go back down in cals since I’m so sedentary this summer babysitting in the house all day aside from my cardio. It’s HOT in Texas too. I’m definitely following your examples here…or trying with small town grocery stores. ;)
