No Zumba, No Cry

Hi guys! How are ya? I love reading your entries for the Ani Phyo cookbook giveaway! Quite a few of ya’ll have a thing for B-Flizzle 😉

bobbyflay

He’s delicious. So is his food 🙂

mesa

(I think I’m going to make a 3-course Mesa Grill meal for the pilot and I on Saturday night- goat cheese queso, here we come)

Keep those giveaway entries coming! Winner will be posted tomorrow morning 😀

Yesterday, while driving home, I had an Indian Lentil soup. I didn’t take a pic since I was driving, so here’s a KathEats-style illustration:

I picked up Vieserton at the kennel:

and then went down to the base gym with Jeni and Lauren.

So, you’re probably wondering what the heck today’s post title means.

“No Zumba, No Cry”

Well, that’s a lie. Because there was a lot of crying this weekend.

I’m no longer teaching at the base gym.

Here’s what happened, for my Zumbies I didn’t get to see and for those of you who would like to know the story:

-I asked for 2 months (July and August) off to chill with the pilot. He’s been gone a LOT this year –way more than I’ve mentioned on the bloggy- and since things are starting to wind down, I figured it would be nice to hang out with my husband, since I’m usually teaching or training when he’s home in the evening.

-I was told to take the end of June off as well, even though I didn’t ask for it off, because they hired new teachers that would be starting in July. I was also told that when I came back in September, I would be on the sub list and would most likely not get my classes back

-The kicker? The decision-maker for this is the one I hired to replace me as lead fitness instructor since I’m very busy with my other two jobs (personal training and the blog). Her first step was to hire a replacement for me, even though my classes consistently have higher participation (by a landslide) than any of the other classes

-The other kicker? It’s a BASE gym. You think they would be more considerate about family time, which is rare and treasured :/

So last night, I went to the gym to tell my Zumbies what happened because quite a few of them were there. Zumbies, I didn’t flake out on you- I love you guys and I’m sorry 🙁

The plan for now is to enjoy hanging out with my husband as planned, get some of my certs updated –they expire in July- and find a job teaching at another gym. I really love teaching this class and it has absolutely nada to do with the dinero- I actually made negative dollars working at the base gym since it’s so far from my house.

Hopefully I can get back to doing this again very soon….

Jeni, Lauren and I did the elliptical for a while, and then I came home and had a smoothie for dinner, since I was still pretty stuffed from the soup but needed a little sumthin’ sumthin’.

smoothie

-1 C almond milk

-1/2 C frozen organic peaches

-1 banana

-1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior (I’m working on getting a promo for you guys!)

– Stevia and cinnamon

-Vanilla and a pinch of sea salt

All slurped up with a glass straw 🙂

Well I’m off to my car to a potential buyer (I hope he likes it! I should be getting the keys to the new one tomorrow or Thursday) and then running errands with Jeni before heading to work.

Have a wonderful day <3

xoxo,

Gina

Note: I added all of the links to the Summer Shape Up workouts to the workout page – this way they’ll be easier to find 🙂

That just stinks about zumba. 🙁 I know how much you love it! You should hold zumba out of your house! …hehe! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 8:43 am

      haha! that’s an excellent idea

      • Jessica @ How Sweet on June 15, 2010 at 8:45 am

You should also see if there are any gyms around you that have Les Mills programs – I think you’d love teaching bodyjam! I am certified in that and there are new releases every 90 days just like bodypump. Plus, if you guys move, gyms all over the country have it now, too!

        • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 11:54 am

i’ve heard about those programs but have never taken a class- maybe i’ll check it out 🙂

    • Julie @SavvyEats on June 15, 2010 at 11:30 am

I like this idea!! I bet a lot of your Zumba students from the gym would come!

  2. Heather (Perspective Is Everything) on June 15, 2010 at 8:40 am

awwwww 🙁 you get those tears and frustrations out and keep reminding yourself that YES-everything happens for a reason! And if you believe in God, “He works all things to the greater good for those who love Him and are the called according to HIS purpose.”
He works how many things?! ALL THINGS!!! 🙂 YEE HAW!
it’s so hard when we don’t have what we want/when we want/how we want.
    You’ll prevail….you’ll have a testimony….you’ll succeed 🙂

  3. diana@mymarblerye on June 15, 2010 at 8:41 am

Hey Gina, I’m a long time lurker….first of all I love Bflay!! One of my fave Food network chefs! Second of all, I can’t believe they would be so “eager” to replace you and push you out without any sort of explanation! I’m sorry and maybe the people in the class can petition you back!! Also, I go the insanity videos cause of you…do you suggest to do just that ONE video for a workout one day?

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 8:42 am

      thanks girl <3
yes, just follow the workout calendar as it's written and you'll be golden 🙂 let me know what you think!

      • diana@mymarblerye on June 15, 2010 at 10:59 pm

Um…so I did the fitness test today…and I pulled a back muscle or something…I’m so embarrassed.

        • Fitnessista on June 16, 2010 at 8:23 am

          the fit test for insanity????

          • diana@mymarblerye on June 16, 2010 at 8:32 am

LOL yes…I guess I’m more out of shape than I thought… FAIL. I’ll still start a video by the end of the week though. I’m like a grandma.

          • Fitnessista on June 16, 2010 at 8:45 am

            be careful!!

  4. Marissa on June 15, 2010 at 8:41 am

I’ve been reading your blog since January and have noticed that you always seem to put your marriage first no matter what. You have inspired me to do the same! No worries- another job will come along.

  5. Jenny on June 15, 2010 at 8:51 am

I hope you end up with the best of both worlds- having a great time with the pilot, but getting back to zumba soon!

  6. Krystina on June 15, 2010 at 8:55 am

Think about the positive – you get to spend more quality time with your husband now. When all is said and done, that’s more important. 🙂 Also, BFlay is delicious.

  7. Melissa @ For the Love of Health on June 15, 2010 at 8:59 am

oh no! That is so unimpressive with how they are treating you- especially because they should understand the nature of your relationship and your husband’s job!
I still need to try zumba!

  8. Hannah on June 15, 2010 at 9:16 am

I would be so lucky if any of the instructors at my gym were half as enthusiastic, fun and knowledgeable as you.

  9. Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) on June 15, 2010 at 9:17 am

I would have done the same thing- family comes first! Plus, since you love zumba so much and people love to zumba with you… wherever you zumba, they will follow! And I agree, everything happens for a reason 🙂

  10. Little Bookworm on June 15, 2010 at 9:20 am

Sorry about the Zumbu stuff. 🙁 (Love the video though!)

  11. Elizabeth on June 15, 2010 at 9:25 am

I work at a gym, and the same stuff happens all the time, especially with classes. What a bummer! You totally got screwed. Enjoy the time with the pilot, and something great WILL come along.

  12. Melissa on June 15, 2010 at 9:27 am

Something amazing is going to come your way. I have no doubt of that!

  13. Katie H. on June 15, 2010 at 9:29 am

That is such a bummer. I’m glad that you will be able to spend more time with the pilot- that’s what is most important. Still, it’s gotta sting. This just means that something better will come along 😀

  14. brittany on June 15, 2010 at 9:31 am

I hope the next two months with your pilot are AMAZING!

Everything does happen for a reason so everything will work out in the end.

  15. Nicci@NiftyEats on June 15, 2010 at 9:33 am

Gina, Hope everything works out with finding a new class to teach. Family time is a must, especially when the pilot is away for so long.

  16. Danielle on June 15, 2010 at 9:34 am

I’m sorry Gina! It’s so pathetic how spouses are treated when they ask for time off to spend with their loved one. God forbid right? We don’t ask for things while their gone and the second we do, it’s like we’re asking for the world. I asked for 3 days off when my husband was due to come home from a year long deployment. Not only was it not granted, but I was laid off a month after I asked…on my birthday no less! Keep your head up. He does have a plan as hard as it may be to see. Hang in there! We all love you and love what you do to brighten our day!

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 11:52 am

      whoa! that’s terrible 🙁
      it really is ridiculous sometimes….
      <3

  17. Alycia @ Fit n Fresh on June 15, 2010 at 9:38 am

Aww I’m so sorry to hear about Zumba!! But I totally agree that everything happens for a reason – I bet you’ll find something even better now (:

And if not, I’m not above driving down to egg this lady’s house. High school rules, baby.

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 11:51 am

      LOL!

  18. TheFruitPersuit (Sabine) on June 15, 2010 at 9:40 am

omg I would have gone bonkers on that bitch! the gym will probably end up regretting this though… might even ask you to come back 🙂

  19. katelyn on June 15, 2010 at 9:43 am

That’s pretty rude, maybe your zumbies shoudl fuss about it- I always make a stink when they change instructors, it’s harder on people than one would think.

  20. Ashley on June 15, 2010 at 9:43 am

I totally agree that Everything does happen for a reason.

  21. Nichole on June 15, 2010 at 9:47 am

Well, everything works out for a reason. I trust that you will find your Zumba love elsewhere and every little thing is gonna be alright! They don’t know what they’ll be missing!

  22. Tina on June 15, 2010 at 9:48 am

Oh, that stinks!!! I can’t believe the girl who replaced you would do that! I love your attitude about it all though. Maybe it will open up a better opportunity with teaching classes and you still get all that time with your man.

  23. Brandi on June 15, 2010 at 9:49 am

Is there a number we can call to complain too??? MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!
    much love!

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 11:50 am

      hahaha

  24. Danielle (Runs on Green) on June 15, 2010 at 9:51 am

I’m sorry about Zumba 🙁 They should have been more understanding about spending time with your hubby. I would have been *pissed*

But I totally agree that everything happens for a reason 🙂

  25. Therese on June 15, 2010 at 9:57 am

That totally sucks, Gina! And completely unfair (especially being on base). The good thing is that it sounds like you’ll be able to get another instructor job pretty much anywhere! And you’re right, everything does happen for a reason and I’m sure this will mean amazing opportunities for you!

  26. katie @ Ordinary Girl, Extraordinary Journey on June 15, 2010 at 9:59 am

I’m with you on the “Everything works out for a reason even if we don’t know what it is.” There have been things that happened in my life that, at the time, I was super upset but later realized that they just made way for something wonderful to happen. God knows what He’s doing. 😉

  27. Carbzilla on June 15, 2010 at 10:05 am

I’m so sorry about your class! I just went through a crappy work situation and was fired. My husband and I are still in shock that there’s just no loyalty to anyone anymore. It’s like everyone is out for themselves these days. You’ll find a place to shine, I’m sure, but still I know it stings.

  28. Julie @ Pickley Pear on June 15, 2010 at 10:06 am

I’m sorry to hear about your Zumba class 🙁 You will find another place to teach, no problem! I don’t necessarily like to hear the saying “everything happens for a reason” when people say it to me, but I do feel it’s true in certain instances. 🙂

  29. Andrea @ Sweet N Green on June 15, 2010 at 10:10 am

Sorry about your class. I would have been so upset! But hey, that’s just even more time you get to spend with your hubby right? 🙂 There’s always a positive to every situation.

  30. crystal on June 15, 2010 at 10:11 am

you’re totally right EVERYTHING HAPPENS for A reason!!! 🙂 stinks that you aren’t going to be teaching zumba there anymore but who knows whats coming around the corner! something great! I can feel it! Enjoy your time with your hubby 🙂 what is what matter the most!

  31. dotsie on June 15, 2010 at 10:12 am

I think that chick is jealous!

I second the Zumba at your house, or even outdoors somewhere, if you could pull it off. One of the beloved managers/spin instructor/group exercise/Body Pump instructors was let go from my gym and he started his own bootcamp outdoors and it’s a HIT!!! You can do the same thing!!

I hope you find another Zumba gig you can love 🙂

  32. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on June 15, 2010 at 10:12 am

Yikes, apparently the gym environment is more cutthroat than I imagined. And to think it’s on a base gym. I would imagine that of all places they would understand.

  33. Paige on June 15, 2010 at 10:13 am

Awwww that sucks Gina! I can’t believe that someone would stab you in the back like that…especially considering how great you seem to be at your job! I hope some of your Zumbies follow you to whatever gym you end up teaching at. Or, what someone said above, out of your house! haha

  34. Lindsey @ Foodie on the Rocks on June 15, 2010 at 10:13 am

Ugh, how lame! Well things do happen for a reason and I’m sure you’ll be back in a Zumba class helping people kick some calorie-butt once September rolls around with no trouble at all! Good for you for knowing where your priorities lie!

  35. bobbileigh on June 15, 2010 at 10:14 am

I’m soo sorry that happened!! The classes I attend or dont attend for that matter are usually because of the instructor so I am sure your zumbies are going to be sad and the gym may even lose some participation! Good luck with finding another gym to do zumba at. I have always wanted to try it and havent either because the locations were too far away or I didnt enjoy the person instructing.

  36. Marissa on June 15, 2010 at 10:18 am

I have a hard time accepting that everything happens for a reason–sometimes years later it still doesn’t make sense–but I hope you can get back to Zumba-ing soon! Can’t wait to see your new car; I just got my first one on Saturday. :]

  37. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life on June 15, 2010 at 10:20 am

You’re right, everything does happen for a reason…I’m a firm believer in that. I’m in that same frame of mind too right now, little different situation, but I understand how you feel. I’m so sorry how things turned out, but on the bright side, now you can spend time with the hubby which is most important of all. ENJOY that time, get caught up like you said, and before you know it, you’ll be good to go!

  38. Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches on June 15, 2010 at 10:25 am

I’m glad you have such a great attitude about this, Gina! You’re such a positive person, and I know that while this seems like a setback, it is just going to lead you to bigger and better things. Sometimes life takes strange and crazy turns, but it all works out in the end! 🙂 Chin up, girl!

  39. Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! on June 15, 2010 at 10:27 am

That’s a rotten way to treat an employee! May this change bring bigger and better things for you and your family 🙂

  40. Hilary@coffeeismycarrot on June 15, 2010 at 10:27 am

Bummer about Base! That’s so not cool 🙁

  41. Kelly @ Healthy Living With Kelly on June 15, 2010 at 10:41 am

I am sorry about Zumba but I love your attitude and how postive and optimistic you are!

  42. Kirby on June 15, 2010 at 10:52 am

I’m so sorry that happened! There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to take time off to spend with your husband! That’s bad karma on the new instructor’s part…what goes around comes around! I’m sure it’s clearing the way for bigger better things though, even if you don’t know what that is yet!

  43. Katie on June 15, 2010 at 11:05 am

Ugh that stinks! I’m so sorry about your Zumba 🙁 GRR!

  44. Miranda @ Mirandasjeans on June 15, 2010 at 11:10 am

I am sorry that the gym screwed you over like that. Sadness. But you are right everything does happen for a reason even if you don’t know what that reason is yet. I dealt with a lot of stress in the late winter/early spring with lay offs at work and also at my other job where funding for my position was going to run out. I took action and have decided to go back to school to become a nutritionist and do something completely different with my life. It will all workout in the end, and you will get to spend much needed time with The Pilot.

  45. Kris | iheartwellness.com on June 15, 2010 at 11:13 am

I am sorry to hear this zumba news! But you are right, everything happens for a reason and when one chapter closes another one has to open. The universe needs to fill that gap you just opened!

    Have a great day!

    XXOO

  46. Jen on June 15, 2010 at 11:24 am

I’m so sorry about zumba! But, now you will get your time with the pilot AND find another place to teach!

  47. Nicole on June 15, 2010 at 11:36 am

Just wondering whether you use your Vitamix to make your smoothies and juices or if you use the juicer for the juices (your green juice, cullen juice, etc). I’m seriously thinking of getting a Vitamix.

    • Nicole on June 15, 2010 at 11:38 am

By the way — I’m also sorry about everything that happened w/ the fitness classes. Just like everyone else said, I think everything happens for a reason and I’m sure when you start looking in the Fall, you’ll find an even better job.

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2010 at 11:45 am

      vitamix –> smoothies
      juicer –> juices

  48. Kim (Imperfectly Perfect) on June 15, 2010 at 11:42 am

Eww, I can’t believe that happened! Some people are such stinkers. I dealt with one for over two years. She made my work environment very toxic for me. I’m so glad to be rid of her! You are a wonderful person, Gina. Somehow this will come back to you in a good way. Enjoy your down time with The Pilot. I’m sure a better job is lingering right around the corner for you! Stay positive!! 🙂
