Solar Ignition

Hey guys! Happy Indian Food Wednesday! Who’s celebrating?? *Raises roti in the air* You know I am 😉

Thank you so much for the awesome feedback on the Booty Sculpting reader’s request post. Send any reader’s request ideas my way: fitnessista at gmail dot com 😀

So have you heard about the new Beachbody program?

Looks like SO much fun!

Here’s the conversation I had with the pilot last night about it.

Me: So… they have a new Beachbody program……

Pilot: Oh yeah?

Me: Yeah. It’s called TurboFire.

Pilot [starts cracking up]: Wait, TurboFire??? Hahahaha. So Beachbody just puts two words that sound crazy together. Infinity Blast? Lightning Race? Solar Ignition?

Me (laughing): You’re a funny guy. It’s kind of like Insanity but with that blonde girl teaching it… and it looks like some booty shaking is involved. Should I go for it?

Pilot: Yeah, go for it.

It may or may not be on the way 😉 I’m excited to add some new cardio to my routine and will post reviews for ya’ll. As you all know, I was ridiculously in love with Insanity, so this will help fill the void a little 🙂

I can already tell you that Shaun T. is a thousand times more fun to look at than Chalene.

Shaun, I still miss your motivation, your abs and your man tights 😉

It’s good to change things up frequently and TurboFire will help shake things up a little.

Insanity Week 1 Review

Insanity Final Review (I’m going to *try* and hit up the bod pod this afternoon and update with my change in body fat stats)

Something to talk about: Do you use High Intensity Interval Training in your routine? How do you HIIT?? My favorite is 1 minute of recovery, 30 seconds of sprinting, repeat. I’m a huge HIIT advocate 😀 It’s a great way to see quick results, blast fat, and get an effective workout in less time.

Something else to talk about: Who saw Eclipse last night?!?! I can’t wait to see it!!!

I think I’m going to do some HITT on a track right now. You’ve giving me motivation to get off the couch after a late night 🙂 Where did you get that mung bean pasta??

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 8:28 am

      you can do it!
      whole paycheck (aka whole foods)

  2. Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete on June 30, 2010 at 8:28 am

Yes, I do use HIIT! It is so important in any type of training especially if you are training for a race. I love to use it when I teach my spin classes. Of course, the class is pissed at me, but they love me in the end for it!

  3. Laury @ thefitnessriot on June 30, 2010 at 8:31 am

Seeing Eclipse TONIGHT!!!!! Watched Twi and New Moon for the 500th time last night to prep 😀

High Intensity Intervals are the best…I like doing 1 minute of Burpees, JAX, High Knees…and 30 secs sprint/ 1 minute walk…1 minute sprint/ 2 mins power walk…I do most my HITT on the Precor these days, treadmill kills my knees/ankles/hips 🙁

  4. A Teenage Gourmet on June 30, 2010 at 8:34 am

Your recent eats look yummy. 🙂 I hope you don’t mind, but I recently referred to Whole Foods as “Whole Paycheck” in one of my blog posts (I gave you credit). I think it’s the funniest name, :). I especially love to call it that when my Daddy is around. =P

  5. Lauren @ Lauren Loses it on June 30, 2010 at 8:35 am

Hahaha @ the Pilot. I love Solar Ignition. I was helping my trainer think of a name for a new aerobics class and I was putting words like that together. She picked Cardio Jamz for the name.

I think your steamed veggies look amazing. I think I know what I’m going to fix tonight.

  6. Kiim on June 30, 2010 at 8:36 am

I ordered Turbo Fire – should get it next week. I like Chalean – so I thought this looked like a winner!

  7. Amy on June 30, 2010 at 8:37 am

In keeping with the booty sculpting theme of the last post and the Beachbody theme of today’s blog, have you looked at the Brazil Butt Lift?

    http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/best_sellers/brazil_butt_lift.do?tnt=BBL_REVIEWS_B1

I’m curious as to your thoughts on this program, Gina. Know anything about it? Does it look legit?

  8. Heather on June 30, 2010 at 8:43 am

    Yup-LOVE me some HIIT. 🙂
As far as the whole Twilight thing…….not so much. Maybe I’m too old! LOL!

  9. Jenny on June 30, 2010 at 8:44 am

I’m totally going for Indian Food tonight to celebrate! I need some spicy food in my life:)

  10. Pam on June 30, 2010 at 8:49 am

Me loves Shaun T…..and Hip Hop Abs…so much fun! Enjoy your Indian food…I want to see that movie also..so cool! Enjoy!

  11. Brittany on June 30, 2010 at 8:50 am

I just started incorporating HIIT into my routine and I really like it. The time goes by quickly and I always feel way as though I get a better workout than if I had ran at the same pace for 30 minute!

  12. simpledaisy on June 30, 2010 at 8:53 am

I love Beachbody Products!! I am currently doin ChaLEAN Extreme in addition to traing for a 100 mile bike ride!! After the bike ride I plan on doing Insanity!! I love the option of being able to workout at home whenever I feel like doing it.
Oh and I LOVE Mung Bean noodles!! Great and tastey way to get my protein in:)
I still have some fat to lose and always have a hard time losing it while training for distance events…I am always SOOOO hungry….
Do you think the Insanity would be good for fat loss????? My riding isn’t usually HIIT training….just steady state endurance!
Thanks….you are always MORE than inspiring:)

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:05 am

yup, insanity is great for fat loss if you combine it with strength training 🙂

  13. allison @ livingoneday on June 30, 2010 at 8:56 am

what do you think about the mung bean pasta? i have yet to try it but it looks awesome. i tweeted at you for help with my cream of mushroom soup substitution, but i was also thinking of using the mung bean noodles (it’s tuna casserole, fyi). do you think mung bean or ezekiel penne would be better?

i need to get my butt to the gym! i’m starting your ssu again! wish me luck!

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:04 am

      it’s amazing
try brown rice noodles for the casserole 🙂
good luck w the ssu! keep me updated!

  14. Lauren on June 30, 2010 at 9:26 am

I’m struggling in the body fat arena. I had the gym test mine the other day and although def. in the acceptable range I would have expected it to be much lower. I am training for my first half, recently switched to a 90% vegetarian diet (6 months now) but I feel like its almost being counter productive. I’ve heard that distance runners can actually gain fat and I’m not sure how to combat it. Do you have any tips for blasting fat while training for a long distance race?

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:04 am

      strength training!

  15. Emily @ Emilyeatsclean on June 30, 2010 at 9:30 am

I’ve loved Insanity too! However, yesterday I renamed Shaun T Devil the Drill Sergant!! 🙂 Can’t wait to read about what you think about TurboFire!!

  16. Vickie on June 30, 2010 at 9:43 am

Yum..I made the snobby joes for the carnivore in my family (aka daughter and husband)last night. They loved it. I have the veganomicon book and totally missed that recipe. I’m glad you featured it so I could make it. Me & my daughter are starting very slowly to get fit. We just walk during the day & swim and then eat healthy. I told her we will have to amp that up when we get into the swing of things. She just looooves getting up early to do this. NOT! She’s 16 and its summmer break. She’d rather snooooze all day. ha ha

  17. Dawn on June 30, 2010 at 9:48 am

    Hey!
Quick question, where can I find mung bean noodles?! I have looked at whole foods and cant find them? Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:03 am

check the asian food aisle- not all whole foods have them, thougb

  18. Jessica @ How Sweet on June 30, 2010 at 9:51 am

I love HIIT! I do it once a week. My favorite is 20 seconds on, 40 seconds off. It’s insane.

  19. Courtney @ Three Months on June 30, 2010 at 9:53 am

I celebrated Indian Food Wednesday last night: a sweet potato, chickpea curry soup and garlic naan. Holy deliciousness! 🙂

  20. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on June 30, 2010 at 9:58 am

I love HIIT! I usually do my intervals on the treadmill, with 1 min sprints and 1 min off or 2 mins sprints and 1 min off – but I could probably afford to go a little harder in the high intensity part!

  21. Naomi on June 30, 2010 at 9:58 am

umm you READ my mind!! i have been researching and watching reviews on youtube for turbo fire and want it so bad! I hear its intense!!! I want to get it so bad, but dont want to shell out the moolah 🙂 I cant wait to hear what you think of it because ifyou like it, then Im getting it!! no way will be more exciting to watch chalene than shaun T though 😉

  22. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on June 30, 2010 at 10:01 am

I’m in the middle of my Insanity program still– I love it! (and hate it at the same time…) ha ha.

Shaun T. is nice on the eyes, though. 😉 Look forward to hearing about the TurboFire workouts!

I think I’m going to see Eclipse tomorrow night– maybe it will be a LITTLE less crazy at the theater?! I really hate seeing big movies like that opening night, because you can barely hear the movie through all the screaming girls!!

  23. Jessica @ Jessica Balances on June 30, 2010 at 10:01 am

I’ve heard of TurboFire but didn’t know much about it – that video definitely makes it look like it works! It looks pretty intense!

  24. Marissa on June 30, 2010 at 10:03 am

I love HIIT! I’m a big fan of 1 min rest, 2 min sprint on the bike. Kills every single time! I’m excited to see Eclipse… but I’m even more excited to see The Last Airbender! I was obsessed with that show when I was younger, hahah.

  25. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on June 30, 2010 at 10:07 am

jam + egg whites = a great idea! yum!

  26. Heather (Heather's Dish) on June 30, 2010 at 10:15 am

wow, i have heard of that program but haven’t tried it! i want to know what you think about it!!!

  27. Michelle@Eatingjourney on June 30, 2010 at 10:25 am

I LOVED turbo jam…LOVED IT. It got me sweating everytime. May have to get this when I got back to the states.

  28. bonnie on June 30, 2010 at 10:33 am

I LOVE beachbody! I’ve done turbojam, got certified and now teach turbokick and did insanity. I’m so excited to hear what you think of turbofire! I’ve heard lots of amazing buzz on it.

  29. Faith A. on June 30, 2010 at 10:34 am

I cant wait to hear what you think of TurboFire! I just started TurboJam and loooove it! I saw Turbo fire and put it next on my list…hope it’s good!
Btw, the pilot is too funny but totally right about the names. 😉

  30. Krystina on June 30, 2010 at 10:35 am

I’ve never seen mung bean pasta! I’m intrigued.

  31. Laura on June 30, 2010 at 10:41 am

    Hey!
My brother and I are currently doing P90X (heard of it?!), which I think is BeachBody’s version of Insanity? Oh and check out the head trainer, Tony Horton: http://micahmcmillan.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/p90xtonyhorton-motivator.jpg
(this pic is kinda scary…hes actually really cute and nice in the videos!)
Anyways, its a 12 dvd pack and is pretty dang expensive, but if you ever feel like doing something like insanity but mixing it up a little, I would highly recommend this! There is a “ripped” version and a “lean” version, and my brother is doing the ripped one, and me the lean one. It’s a GREAT workout! Also, I’ve been drinking a lot of whey protein lately, and I noticed you stray away from whey. My skin has been breaking out, and I am wondering if you think that could be the cause? Do you think whey protein makes your skin break out? Thanks so much!!

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:01 am

      hey girl,
whey definitely makes me break out because it’s cow dairy based. that’s why i roll with brown rice protein 🙂

  32. Ellen@FirednFabulous on June 30, 2010 at 10:45 am

Lol, the Pilot IS funny 🙂 I think I need some TurboFire in my life! I do interval training on the treadmill sometimes and it is INTENSE. Just need to do it more often. P.S. How is it almost July and I’m STILL saying, “Gotta get ready for bikini season?!”

  33. kyla on June 30, 2010 at 10:46 am

I totally waited in line for 3.5 hrs last night for Eclipse along with a ton of high school and middle school girls. The movie is different from the book in that they had to change some order of events around and who did what, etc. But once you realize that it will be different from the book, it’s highly enjoyable. Well I was going to like it anyway so I didn’t really care what they did 😀

    Robert Pattinson…swoon.
Taylor Lautner and his abs…double swoon.

Plus the cinematography was awesome and the music was great too. All in all, I would rate it as an A-.

  34. Alexa Meany on June 30, 2010 at 10:50 am

hi gina! I’ve been a long time reader,i was trying to find your email address to ask you a question. I have the acacia dvd core fusion pure abs& arms and i was wondering if you had any suggestions… about neck pain/discomfort during a lot of the ab exercises. I’ve been doing ab work for a long time and this weird neck discomfort only seems to occur once in a while but wanted to see your suggestions!!

my email is almeany@gmail.com.. hope to hear back from you! I’m such a fan of yours 🙂 your truly inspiring !

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:00 am

      hey alexa,
i used to have big time neck pain during pilates, but as my form got better and i got stronger, the neck pain went away. i’d make sure you have proper form, rest when you need to, and it should get easier with time. if it’s really bothering you though, or isn’t getting better, see a doc.
      xoxo

I love HIIT! I always feel like I get such a great workout when I do it, and its a HUGE help in improving my speed! I do it once a week… twice sometimes!

  36. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on June 30, 2010 at 10:56 am

  38. angie on June 30, 2010 at 11:21 am

Ahhh Gina you are going to LURRRRRVE TurboFire! I have been doing it for a week now..LOVE LVOE LOVE it. Such a high intensity workout. It reminds me of Insanity somewhat but faster and more towards females. The time flies by too. I totally look forward to getting up at 5 am to get my TF in before work.
I have also been adding in Insanity too like if i still have energy and need a little more burn.

Have you thought about getting the new Insanity DVD’s they put out? I love BB videos.

    • Fitnessista on June 30, 2010 at 11:52 am

      i’m so excited!
and YES i will definitely be getting the new insanity dvds 🙂

  39. angie on June 30, 2010 at 11:24 am

I just wanted to add to my post: when i started Insanity i never got sore…but then when i started TF i was sore for a couple days after starting it. Not sure what was going on.

  40. Tina on June 30, 2010 at 11:24 am

I want to try that workout SO badly. I actually already have it designated (as well as Insanity) as the only thing I want for Christmas. Yes, Christmas. My baby is due mid January and I love having at home DVDs with a kiddo in case I can’t make it to the gym. I already love Turbojam and really want to try these now. If it isn’t obvious – I can’t wait to get back to more intense workouts. Especially since I had to give them up 6 months before even getting pregnant so I could actually conceive. I’ve been waiting a long time for things like these. I can’t wait to hear what you think of them. 🙂

And I will be seeing Eclipse next Tuesday. I cannot wait!

  41. Edith on June 30, 2010 at 11:33 am

So… after your post the other day I tried Snobby Joes. OMG. Isa via you changed my life. THANK YOU!!! haha.

  42. Tiffany on June 30, 2010 at 11:36 am

I just started running, so I’m slowly beginning to incorporate HIIT into my routine. TurboFire looks interesting though, I might check it out in the future.

I saw Eclipse and LOVED it.

  43. maxinthegym on June 30, 2010 at 11:41 am

Had my Indian food last night with some curry!

My workout vid was led by a perky blonde woman as well hahah she was surprisingly motivating though 😀

  44. ActiveEggplant on June 30, 2010 at 11:50 am

I’ve been doing Chalene’s Turbo Jam videos for a couple years now – they’re GREAT and I definitely plan on adding Turbo Fire to my collection (once I gather the extra arm & leg to pay for it).

I thought I would be totally annoyed by Chalene – but she’s really good actually!

OMG! I saw Eclipse and it was amazing! You definitely have to go see it a.s.a.p 😀

  48. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on June 30, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I’ll sometimes throw in a 1 minute sprint every 5 minutes when running on the treadmill, but I’m not really sure if that counts as HIIT. 😛 I’d like to learn more about it and try it out though!

  49. Katie on June 30, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I LOVE HIIT TOO!!!!!!!! I just got done doing some HIIT on the elliptical! It really is so effective and in a short amount of time!!

I want to see the new eclipse, I didnt see it last night either! Hoping to soon!!!!

The Beach Body Workout looks intriguing!! I might have to look into that!!!

    Happy Indian Food Wednesday!!! xoxo

  50. Madison on June 30, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I also love HIIT. I especially like the Tabata Protocol. Yeah that sounds like another one of those two-word mash ups.

No Indian food for me today. Don’t think the bf likes it much. Also, I didn’t cook the Snobby Joes last night like I had planned to, so I am making that tonight.

I also haven’t seen Eclipse yet either. I just got around to watching Toys Story on Monday. I can’t wait!! But I will, until the crowds die down a bit. My love for Eclipse does not trump my hatred of crowds. 😀
