Double Dip

Heyyyyyy 😀 How are ya?

juice

Before teaching this morning, I enjoyed a fabulous green juice. It’s the same one I’ve been making for the past week + (green apple, cucumber, romaine, lemon) but I might get a little crazy tomorrow and change it up 😉 As I made my juice in my Jack LaLanne juicer, I definitely thought of the mastermind behind it and the positive impact he left on the world. (Check out *this article* on Jack LaLanne, who recently passed away at the age of 96)

I also had a bowl of quinoa with organic butter, raw honey, cinnamon, almond milk and fresh blueberries

quinoa

Purfection.

Teaching was a BLASTY, and then I chugged a protein shake on the way to check out a house that we’re interested in.

It was beautiful. Open windows, a balcony with the master bedroom, grassy backyard, roses that bloom in the summer, 4 bedrooms, great neighborhood.

A couple fixer-uppers:

-Lighting fixtures

-Wallpaper in the laundry room (with kittens)

-Non-granite countertops (a must)

-Little closet 🙁

-Sliding glass door on the shower- very hard to keep sparkly clean

All things that can be fixed, but I’m going to talk to the Pilot and send him pics to see what he says. I’m just excited to have a PERMANENT place to live in the near future! And decorating….. I live for decorating 🙂

Lunch was pretty much face-rocking:

lunch

A salad beast that began with kale, massaged (in a creepy way) with avocado, lemon juice, a little olive oil, Tamari and cayenne

kale

Topped with cauliflower “rice” (1/2 head of cauliflower pulsed to rice-sized pieces in the food processor), Garlic Gold, and seaweed snacks

beast

+ a piece of socca (garbanzo bean flour and water, cooked in coconut oil like a pancake)

socca (3)

I’m gonna double dip today—I taught this morning and am going to check out my friend’s Zumba class tonight 🙂 I love taking class from other instructors.

Enjoy the rest of your day! <3

xoxo

Gina

Today’s tip: Make sure to get some carb replenishment if you’ll be working out for longer than an hour. Our body uses carbs for energy, followed by fat, then protein. If you have a little snack in between classes, or on a long run, you’ll keep your body from entering a catabolic state and munching on your muscles for fuel. Some of my favorites: Clif Shot Blocks, Clif Energy Gels (the mocha flavor will rock your world!), a couple of medjool dates, or Honey Stingers.

We just talked about Jack LaLanne in my Sports Law class. Such an energetic guy–I’ll have to make some juice in his honor soon 🙂

Medjool dates are the best. They are so sweet-it’s like eating candy!

Oh my gosh, I just about fell over laughing at the “rubbed in a creepy way” comment. Hilarious.

I love clif shot blocks — but yes, medjool dates are the perfect snack — after working out or whenever!

Did I miss the post where you talk about staying in Tucson “permanently”? Or would you buy a house for until the Pilot returns? I don’t mean to pry, just wondering!

The juice looks really good! Do you like your Jack Lalanne juicer? I’ve been thinking about getting one.

Good luck with the house hunt!

  20. Kelly on January 25, 2011 at 8:03 pm

This might be a creepy request but could you please do a video about how to “massage kale”?? Every time I read a recipe or hear someone talking about it I just can’t envision how exactly that works. Is it exactly as it sounds??

    • Fitnessista on January 25, 2011 at 8:17 pm

it’s exactly as it sounds, but sure i’ll do a video 🙂

  21. Charlotte on January 25, 2011 at 8:04 pm

I love double dipping! I completely agree with you on the refueling thing, since doing the fitnessista shape up (and just working out more in general at school) I’ve noticed I need to eat more to keep up with how active I am… and I don’t hate it !:) I love eating. Btw, I was curious what exactly does garbonza bean flour taste like? What was it before that you didn’t like it in?

  22. mary (what's cookin' with mary) on January 25, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Was gonna do a double dip a few weeks back and tried out vanilla Gu and it SO did the trick! It was all the energy I needed.

  28. Ashley on January 25, 2011 at 8:51 pm

oohh sounds perfect. I laughed at the kale massaging. I’ve always wanted to try zumba just haven’t gotten an opportunity. Have fun!

  29. jen @ taste life on January 25, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Come on Gina, the people have spoken and we want to see the kitten wallpaper! I laughed out loud when I read that. Soooo funny to check out how other people have decorated houses!

  30. Kelly on January 25, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Oh gosh. Kitten wallpaper. Makes you wonder about the people who lived there before. All those things are totally doable. My husband and I just manually ripped out our entire kitchen in the house we just bought and now we have to hire someone in to put it back together again.

  31. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on January 25, 2011 at 9:01 pm

So happy for you that you have the freedom to take the classes you want and if you can do it, and have the time and energy to do them, rock on!

The house…sounds amazing! Wow..for a 1st home purchase, that sounds amazing! I *just* closed escrow on my house in Phoenix 2 weeks ago. It took me 12.5 months to sell. It took longer to sell than we lived in it! The market in AZ is a BUYER’s market so shop around and play hardball 🙂

  32. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on January 25, 2011 at 9:26 pm

Oooooh that house sounds amazing!! I’m with you on the sliding glass doors…I have one in my shower and it gets too dirty for me to even bother trying to keep it clean. But I think I’d be okay with it if my bedroom had a balcony!!

  33. Heidi on January 25, 2011 at 10:17 pm

That’s a whole lotta green food in one day – go girl! The socca looks delicious. I’m definitely gonna have to look up a recipe for that. I have a huge bag of soy flour. Do you think it would work as well as garbanzo flour?

Good luck with the house hunting! My husband and I will be embarking on that soon and we are watching copious amounts of House Hunters to prepare. Can’t wait to see what you guys find!

  34. Mandy (theamazonprincess) on January 25, 2011 at 10:18 pm

But wait… you don’t like kitten wallpaper?! haha. I’m sure it will be beautiful if you guys choose to fix it up! 😀

  35. Mo on January 25, 2011 at 10:26 pm

Just wondering if your holistic doc discussed with you the possibility all of your intense exercise could be throwing off your hormone levels. I know that many active people get amennorhea, high cortisol levels, etc. Sometimes that can play much more of a role than diet. (I’m a RD…just sayin)

    • Fitnessista on January 25, 2011 at 11:27 pm

yup, he said i’m good. my cortisol levels are in the normal range and i’ve never experienced amennorhea, so he said i can keep doing what i’m doing 🙂

  36. Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel on January 25, 2011 at 11:41 pm

and i love getting my carbs from beans of any kind, flour or whole nom nom nom. good tip to keep the energy up for long workouts. i know without it i can definitely feel the difference!

Ahhh you are buying a houseee! So much fun 🙂

  38. Ash on January 25, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Yummm! Btw, did you ever come up with a vegan version of your protein pancakes? (The socca reminded me of that)

    • Fitnessista on January 26, 2011 at 12:27 am

yup! use a flax egg (1 T flax, 3 T milk) instead of the regular egg

  39. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on January 26, 2011 at 12:16 am

I just saw garbanzo bean flour at the store the other day and was very intrigued! Now that you showed me how to use it, I’ll have to pick some up!!

  40. Amy on January 26, 2011 at 12:41 am

Oh what fun looking at possible homes! Is the pilot coming home soon? I know you said semi-soon, just unsure of what is! I hope like tomorrow soon lol!

    • Fitnessista on January 26, 2011 at 10:30 am

i wish it were tomorrow soon! not quite

  41. Amy on January 26, 2011 at 12:42 am

Oh, the socca reminds me of something similiar from my World Vegetarian cookbook by Madhur Jaffrey. Same ratio of the chickpea flour to water, but then you add in Indian flavors. You would LOVE them! Here’s an example: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chickpeaflourpancake_5094. Sooo good with some chutney on the side!

  42. mi-an dela cruz on January 26, 2011 at 12:45 am

Made that socca tonite just added TJ’s 21 seasoning salute to it!! wow so good! dipped mine in plain yogurt…just lovely. thanks for the recipe. i’m gonna check your twin friends’ other socca recipes! but i’m sure there’s so many things can do with it!

  43. Faith on January 26, 2011 at 1:55 am

Hey!! I had a couple questions:
    1. Do you like your Jack Lalanne juicer? Which version do you have and would you recommend it?
    2. You mention sometimes having a protein shake waiting for you in the car after a workout. How do you keep it cold?

Thanks in advance for the info!

    • Fitnessista on January 26, 2011 at 10:28 am

      1. yes, i love it!
      2. the car keeps it cold- it’s usually chilly enough to keep it from getting gross.

  44. Gill (snaxandthecity) on January 26, 2011 at 3:43 am

house hunting is the best! I swooned at your description of the house since i live in a tiny one bed flat in central London! I want blooming roses!! lol.
Also, I’m interested in getting into juicing but everywhere I look people say it’s really high in sugar and that since it has no fibre, it goes straight into your bloodstream raising your blood sugar etc. What do you think?

    • Fitnessista on January 26, 2011 at 10:28 am

if you’re only juicing pineapples and high sugar fruits, then yes. if you’re drinking a variety of green veggies and fruits, it’s the fastest way to get the nutrients into your bloodstream and the lack of fiber makes it really easy to digest

  45. barbara on January 26, 2011 at 6:53 am

Hi Gina, I have a question about juicing. I have the Breville juicer which is great, but I was thinking about getting a Vitamix because their ad says that the skins of veggies get juiced and that is where alot of the fiber and nutrients are so you don’t have a whole container of fiber to throw out like you do with the juicer. What are your thoughts on this? You have a Vitamix don’t you. Thanks.

    • Fitnessista on January 26, 2011 at 10:26 am

the great thing about juices is that you get all of the nutrients, minus the fiber so it’s easier to digest. in the vitamix, it’s a soup or smoothie. i couldn’t be able to drink my juice creations if i put them in the vitamix- it would be more like a gazpacho than a juice
the vitamix is awesome for smoothies, hummus, soup, nut flour, nut butter, everything except for juice

  46. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on January 26, 2011 at 7:32 am

Haha I’m so sad you didn’t snap a picture of that kitten wallpaper! I think I’d be tempted to keep it up just as a joke!

  47. Kim @ girlevolving on January 26, 2011 at 8:29 am

Kitten wallpaper – that’s awesome! The house we moved in to when I was 8 had football players on the wall and my sister and I would put our feet on the walls – she told me that it would make the paper dirty and then my parents would change it faster. 🙂

Are you guys definitely living in Tucson?

    • Fitnessista on January 26, 2011 at 10:24 am

we don’t know yet, but could find out anytime between now and mid feb

  48. Barbara on January 26, 2011 at 8:50 am

gina belle, i discovered brown rice bread! you’ve only mentioned it a gazillion times in your posts. i’ve tried other products like ezekiel bread but i never liked the texture or really the taste. finally, a WF/GF bread that actually tastes decent. thanks a bunch.
