Focus On: TRX

Hi 😀 What’s up friends? Hope you’ve had a fabulous afternoon. Happy birthday to three of my real-life blog friends today: the Twins and Caitlin! <3 Today I’m bringing you a Focus On post that answers the question: What is TRX? Read on for more, but first a little about my day.

Some fun goodies came in the mail today:

Lululemon Tank and Carrots N Cake book

A new lulu tank and the Carrots ‘N Cake book. As far as the tank goes, even though I don’t work there anymore, you can bet your booty I still shop there (but miss my discount), and the book was a gift from the publisher. I am so excited to read it!

Bella tried to call dibs so she could read about her friend Murphy:

bella and book

but I told her she’d have to wait 😉

And then I told her it was bath time, and she promptly hid under the bed.

bell hiding under the bed

Just look at this defiant little face.

Unhappy Bell

(blurry, but I had to post it)

Afterwards, she did her post-bath frenzy and is now sleeping prettily on the couch 😉

For snack, I enjoyed a protein muffin, switched up a little bit.

protein muffin

(these things are SO giant! I lurve it)

Since I didn’t have any applesauce, or yogurt, or pumpkin, I used something totally random instead: cooked quinoa! I figured if it worked, great, and if not, NBD, but wanted to see what happened.

I liked it even better this way!

protein muffin

A few of you have said that Deb’s original recipe has a sponge-y texture. By adding the quinoa, it made it more cake-like. I love it even more now.

(PS. Drizzle some maple syrup on top. You will foodgasm your face off)

For dinner, I’ve got some carrot-bean-beet burgers in the oven,

carrot beet burgers

and am about to pack my lunch and snacks since I start work tomorrow! Kinda stoked 😀

Since I have to work early, there will be a special Pilot post (seksi pictures? I hope) waiting for ya 🙂

Off to Zumba and on to TRX Suspension Training!

What is TRX Suspension Training?

What it is: TRX (Total Body Resistance Exercise) is a full-body workout, utilizing the TRX system, which is suspended from the ceiling or a door frame.

Here’s a pic of what the equipment looks like:

trx_large Source

Many gyms have TRX systems in the weight or cardio areas, and they’re one of those things that I had NO idea what to do with until recently.

What to expect: To be SORE! The TRX system will work your body in an entirely different way than you may be used to. The suspension forces you to utilize your core for many of the movements, and by using this tool, you’ll be doing twists on standard strength exercises. There are a lot of compound exercises that can be done with the TRX, too. For example, you can hold onto the handles, squat, and row at the same time—working your back, quads, hamstrings, biceps and core.

Planks on the TRX are WICKED, too.

TRX plank Source

Quite a few gyms offer TRX classes, or you can purchase the system to have at home, as well as at-home DVDs. (Has anyone tried the DVDs??)

What to wear: Standard gym gear. I recommend crops or pants (to prevent flashing other participants—if you’re at home, wear whatever floats your boat), a tank or fitted shirt, and sneakers.

Pros:

-Versatility. There are over 300 different things you can do with it. In contrast to the cost (which is around $120), I think that it’s a worthy investment. If you can try out a class before purchasing your own, I highly recommend it. This way, you’ll know if you like it and will also have an idea of proper form.

-Convenience. Easy to remove and take with you if you move or travel. It’s a very lightweight piece of equipment.

-Workout quality. If you have a great instructor, you will get a great workout.

Cons:
-The same cons that can come with working out at home. Some of us need a gym environment to push ourselves (if this is the case, seek out a class!), and others can work out at home no problemo. See what mold you fit into before investing in your own system.

Random ?: Since I have egg whites a couple of times each day, any ideas on what to do with the yolks? A few of ya left some for me on my last post- thank you! I feel wasteful throwing them away, but have yet to see organic egg whites in a carton.

xoxo

my husband is OBSESSED with TRX straps. he says, “TRX straps are to working out as chuck norris is to martial arts.”

  3. Joelle on April 26, 2011 at 8:41 pm

So fun you got that book! I just made her 3 minute cookie recipe. I switched the egg white and brown sugar for trader joes’ mango butter. Soo good!

  4. Elizabeth on April 26, 2011 at 8:43 pm

I have been increasing my egg consumption a lot latley and have been nervous about eating multiple yolks a day. I’m thinking I am going to switch to whites!

I love getting fun mail! Love the pictures of your dog, too cute!!

  5. Ashley on April 26, 2011 at 8:46 pm

I swear Trader Joe’s has egg whites that are organic…it’s been a few trips since I’ve bought them there but I think they are… :-)!

  6. Holley @ Smart Snacking on April 26, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Ah! So glad you posted on this – I have been wondering what all the TRX hype was about. I want to try it now!

  7. sarah on April 26, 2011 at 8:49 pm

you can make citrus curds with the yolks. i dont have an exact recipe but you can find one online. i love TRX!

  8. Becky @ BeckyAinsley.Blogspot.com on April 26, 2011 at 8:52 pm

    I LOVE TRX!

I first got a taste of it in my regular Fitcamp classes that I attend. They got a new trainer who loved TRX so we used it a bunch and it was always more of a challenge for me than regular weights. I would really like to get one for my apartment and do the DVDs. A friend of mine does them and they kick his butt!

  9. Michelle C on April 26, 2011 at 8:54 pm

I’m so glad you did this post. This small training gym by me offers TRX classes and I was to nervous to go because I didn’t know what it was all about but now I think i’ll check out a class!

  10. Jessica on April 26, 2011 at 8:56 pm

My gym does trx classes and they are awesome!

  11. Shannon on April 26, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I love using the TRX!! One of the classes I take incorporates TRX into the workout. It’s awesome because you have an instructor guiding you (kicking your booty) and you’re in a class environment soaking in all that great energy. 🙂

PS – I just got the same Lulu tank!!

  12. April @ Grits & Granola Bars on April 26, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Awwww, Bella is such a cutie pie!

  13. Amanda Jewell on April 26, 2011 at 8:59 pm

There are totally organic egg whites in a carton! Check egg section at your Whole Paycheck! That’s where I get mine! GOOD LUCK TOMORROW!

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 9:50 pm

You may have just changed my life 🙂

  14. Darcy on April 26, 2011 at 9:04 pm

I love-love-love the TRX! I get such a good core workout. Took a TRX class last Friday & surprise, surprise, even my glutes were sore the next day. It takes a-lot to make those bad boys hurt!

  15. Tiffanie on April 26, 2011 at 9:11 pm

we call the TRX the t-rex at my gym, lovingly of course 🙂 that thing will kick your booty like a dinosaur! i’ve never taken an all TRX class but i’m signing up for one at a new gym in my area. i’m really excited to try it for an entire class, especially after the good comments here.

  16. Dynamics on April 26, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Eggology has organic and the best egg whites I have ever tasted. A bit pricey, especially buying them from Whole Paycheck. You can buy they online and since you eat so many, it might be a cheaper option. They even have on-the-go packages for the micro.

  17. Sana on April 26, 2011 at 9:29 pm

  18. Laura @ Meet Virginia on April 26, 2011 at 9:32 pm

Is that a new Lulu print?! I love it!

    • Fitnessista on April 27, 2011 at 1:59 am

yes, i forget the name of it though! something roses 🙂

  19. Ashley on April 26, 2011 at 9:36 pm

I LOVE THE TRX!!! My bf bought one after using it during ROTC and we are both hooked. I try to do it a couple times a week and it really gives me an excellent workout. Every times I use it, I end up sore in a different place that I didn’t know I had!

  20. Holly @ The Runny Egg on April 26, 2011 at 9:37 pm

I love eggs — yolks and all, so I never have the problem of having extra yolks!

I would love to try TRX — but my gym doesn’t have it and there is no room in my house to have that kind of set up.

  21. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 26, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Oh the TRX workouts look great! I would love to try those…those planks look killer!! in the best way. Holy core building!

Glad you are busy with burgers, muffins, and book reading! yay for Tina’s new book!

And yolks? Nuke them in the micro or cook them somehow and feed them to Bella 🙂 She’d love them!

  22. suzi on April 26, 2011 at 10:27 pm

Good luck tomorrow – I’m sure you’ll be fab!

  23. Char on April 26, 2011 at 10:28 pm

I train with TRX quite a bit…I actually did an ab blast on them last night and I tell ya, my abs felt awesome today. I like them because they allow you to adjust based on your own weight!

  24. Chelsea on April 26, 2011 at 10:30 pm

I have been dying to try TRX! Good luck on the job tomorrow 🙂 You are so awesome Gina!

  25. Jackie on April 26, 2011 at 10:32 pm

The trainer I used to work with introduced me to TRX at the gym I go to and I loved it. It works me hard and I liked it so much, I bought it for at home when I traveled or wasn’t in the mood to drive to the gym. Love it.

  26. Leticia on April 26, 2011 at 10:37 pm

Organic Valley sells organic egg whites in a carton, and I found it at Sprouts or Sunflower Market (I live in Phoenix); here’s the link to the website!

  27. Michelle on April 26, 2011 at 10:57 pm

We feed our yolks to our dog, Gertie 🙂 Our vet ok’d it (the yolks are apparently really good for their coat), and so we usually cook them and mix one in with her dry food, and portion them out with her meals that way. Love the new Lulu print!

  28. kt on April 26, 2011 at 11:02 pm

That TRX video looked crazy intense! (Atomic oblique pushups?? Really??) I’m a sucker for home workout programs as I live 60 miles from a gym and running outside everyday gets old. Wish I could take a class to try it out, but I might have to go read up on the videos instead. Thanks for the review; I’d never heard of the program before.

Good luck tomorrow! Everyone is going to love you. 🙂

  29. Meghan on April 26, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I loooooooove the TRX! the gym where I work out has 4 different types of TRX Classes (beginner, intermediate, one that includes cardio intervals and TRX Pilates). The TRX pilates is my fav because I think pilates mat classes are boring and love the reformer but can’t afford it so it’s a happy medium and the instructor is aaaaamazing! I’m moving soon to start grad school and am definitely gonna buy a TRX system 🙂

I feel creepy leaving such a long comment, I really like your blog but rarely comment but I had to leave something about TRX 🙂 I guess its creepier to read your blog and never comment, huh? Lol

Just curious, are most of the people who comment people that you recognize who also have blogs?

    -Meghan

Organic Valley has a carton of organic egg whites:). I like the TRX review. Thanks.

  31. Allison @ Food For Healing on April 26, 2011 at 11:20 pm

    those burgers look very interesting!
good luck at your first day of work!

  32. Natalie on April 26, 2011 at 11:24 pm

I absolutely LOVE using the TRX both for my own workouts and with clients! It’s empowering and amazing how challenging it can be to use your own body weight.

  33. Ashley @ Feeding Ashley on April 26, 2011 at 11:26 pm

    Good luck tomorrow!
I don’t know much about eggs so I can’t really help but I like the idea from early about giving them to Bella who is so cute in these pictures btw.

  34. Suzanne on April 26, 2011 at 11:26 pm

I work out with the TRX with my trainer. I actually hate it, because I feel shaky and not strong enough. I always need a break and feel like I’m going to collapse. But, I definitely feel sore in odd places, and I love changing up my routine sometimes. I’m not going to give up on it though. I ain’t no quitter! 🙂

  35. Leigh on April 26, 2011 at 11:33 pm

I LOVE TRX!!! Been doing it for a few months at the Y. It’s part of my Wednesday night workout ritual. One hour of Dance Trance followed by an hour of TRX….it totally kicks my butt but feels so good!!

    • Fitnessista on April 27, 2011 at 1:58 am

      where do you take DT?!

      • Leigh on April 27, 2011 at 3:41 pm

I’m an instructor at Sarasota!! We were at the Workshop in February and that’s where I learned of you and your blog….I’ve been following ever since!

        • Fitnessista on April 27, 2011 at 9:41 pm

so awesome! you guys have great choreography 🙂

  36. mi-an on April 26, 2011 at 11:37 pm

I have not used TRX…curious though! for egg yolks, try making flan with them. the filipino version is really fattening but soo soo good and creamy and i’m sure you can substitute other ingredients to it. 🙂

  37. kate@ahealthypassion on April 26, 2011 at 11:38 pm

cant wait to hear what you think of the book!

  38. Sonia @ Master of Her Romaine on April 26, 2011 at 11:39 pm

I took 1 TRX class in Lubbock, TX when my gym offered a free trial of the class. It was amazing and I was so sore the next day! It was super fun though and I could see myself having a ton of fun mixing up all the exercises.

  39. Fit Girl NW on April 26, 2011 at 11:40 pm

LOVE the TRX!!! I’ve been using the TRX with my clients for the last year and just started teaching small group classes on the TRX about a month ago at my local YMCA. I took the group suspension training class through TRX about 6 months ago and it really helped with cueing and progressions. The great thing is that you can have a class with varying levels of fitness all working out at the same time with different modifications. When you do try it for the first time, just remember that it might feel awkward, but stick with it and you will quickly catch on! I have yet to train someone who didn’t like the TRX!

As far as the DVD’s go I would recommend just checking out the TRX site: http://www.trxtraining.com and going to the TRAIN tab and then RESOURCES. great instructional videos, and then the community section has a ton of workout videos!

Thanks Gina for introducing the TRX 🙂

My pupper loves egg yolks. I just microwave them and mix them in his food.

I had never heard of TRX before, but now I’m dying to! I wish my gym offered classes…guess that means I have an excuse to try out new gyms (on guest passes, of course) next time I travel 😉

trx- yes it rules and is a great way to switch up your routine. so good for core and to really work hard, a challenge. I am certified and my clients love it in addition.

Yolks- 2 ideas, cook some up and give to Bella. great for their coat.:) also you can use it in your hair if you really want to . lol. 🙂

Egg yolk masks!! Feels disgusting, but so so good for your skin (especially if you are prone to redness)

How stinkin CUTE is Bella 🙂 Adorable!– Just wanted to say good luck at the new job tomorrow!! Can’t wait to hear about how you rocked it 😉

p.s. What kind of flour do you use in the protein muffin? I know Deb’s calls for coconut but I’ve found that brown rice and GF flour mixes work better. What do you like?

    • Fitnessista on April 27, 2011 at 1:57 am

      i like brown rice 🙂

  45. justine on April 27, 2011 at 1:54 am

My mother, who is Italian, used to whisk up the egg yolks for my brother and I when we were little to have as a dessert. She added sugar and a drop of rum or similar ( yes, for children; shameless) and beat til they were very pale, fluffy and thick. Sooo delicious. We called it a ” whisky egg”, but I only discovered years later that it is an authentic Italian pudding called Zabaglione.
Otherwise – use them for lemon or lime or orange curd. On thick, fresh, bread. Oh be still my beating heart…

  46. aWickedRose on April 27, 2011 at 2:05 am

I’ve done TRX classes at the base gym at NAS Jacksonville. Fantastic. It’s a really just…deep intense workout. It holds my attention and….it just feels deeper. More serious. The instructor that taught the classes I went to (I think a total of two trade off) used instrumental music and I really liked that. I’ve done Jazzercise and I get distracted by the songs really easily. In addition to the fact I just want to come into an exercise class and be able to do the class. I don’t want to have to go online in my spare time and study dance moves to not feel like a dunce in class. TRX utilizes really simple body mechanics and I dig that.

  47. AnneW on April 27, 2011 at 2:40 am

I’m not sure about organic, but Trader’s has cage-free egg whites!

  48. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on April 27, 2011 at 5:58 am

I LOVE TRX! Seriously – it provide the ultimate full body work out – there are so many exercises you can do and muscles you can target -with one small piece of equipment. Sadly -since I moved I dont get to use it anymore. My trainer had one that I used regularly – but he is too far to see often now. My gym doesn’t have any!

  49. Lori H on April 27, 2011 at 6:12 am

I tried TRX and loved it at my gym. Our Certified Trainer was awesome. The only problem is, I have trouble with my elbow and it was just too much strain on it. On the other hand, it was a great workout! I was sore in places on my shoulders and back that I never even had touched with other work outs! It’s always fun to change things up. I’m really enjoying your features of different work outs!

  50. Hailey on April 27, 2011 at 6:39 am

my miss whitley, when she needs a bath, she does exactly the same but once she is out and being dried, she runs around like a crazy dog! haha!

We have TRX at our gym and I love it. We use it most weeks in our group PT classes.
