Egg Myths

Morning friends! <3 Hope you had a lovely weekend.

It was quite a whirlwind over here:

-Winterhaven: Kyle and Meg got engaged (!!!)

Brunch at Nana’s and the Street Fair

Lots of fun stuff! And now it’s Monday….

Nothing like a kick in the pants to remind yourself of all the things on the to-do list you blew off this weekend. So worth it 🙂

Also, nothing like a glorious breakfast made by someone else, to put a morning smile on my face:

Amazing.

I still can’t believe I only had one yolk a day for so long and started eating two yolks just a few months ago- I was missing out! It’s one of the things that’s brainwashed into you if you’re trying to lose weight (as I was, quite a few years ago), along with the fact that “eggs will raise your cholesterol” and high cholesterol runs in my family. Taste wise, egg yolks taste so much better, and that’s where all of the nutrients are found. You can read more *here*, but eggs also don’t have a huge effect on blood cholesterol- saturated fat in the diet does.

My dad was asking me about ways to lower cholesterol naturally, and it’s not something I’m too familiar with. I was going to send him *this article* but let me know if you have any tips <3

My favorite ways to make an egg:

Egg-stada style

egg stada

(An omelet, flipped over instead of in half, with toppings of choice)

Steamed (so much easier than boiling)

eggs

Egg Puff

What’s your fave way to enjoy an egg? Vegan friends: what’s your breakfast protein of choice?

I’m out!

See ya later today <3

xoxo

Today’s tip: Wintery workouts burn 10-20% more calories to keep your internal body temperature up. If you’re taking your workout outside, be sure to bundle appropriately and fuel for that extra burn <3

I love eggs cooked all sorts of ways! Do you have the recipe of your nana’s casserole?

no 🙁 i need to ask her for it!

I second that recipe request! My favorite way is to make an omelet wrap- you swirl the egg around in the pan to make a really, really thin tortilla-like omelet and then use it like a wrap. I like putting guacamole, mushrooms and sprouts in mine with salsa on top. wrap like a burrito and eat with a fork

Thank you so much for helping dispel the egg cholesterol myth. As a vegetarian I have two eggs every day, I need the nutrients and protein!

Best way to naturally lower cholesterol = go vegan! My mom was vegetarian and had increased her skim milk/cottage cheese intake b/c of osteoporosis. Not only did her cholesterol go sky high but her osteoporosis got worse! I convinced her to go vegan and now her osteoporosis has IMPROVED (which is almost unheard of!) and her cholesterol is back to normal. Forks over Knives is a great documentary about this too!

I’m so glad you blogged about this!! I did the same post a while back. … people are so scared of eating the whole egg. but they are just misinformed!

Eggs are my favorite! Being pregnant they’ve really become a must have for me.

I love custard oats the best… Chocolate banana to be exact 🙂 http://www.healthywithheather.com/2011/11/classic-breakfasts-sweet-and-savory/

Hi cuz! I’m sad I missed the brunch! It looked amazing 🙂

In PA school we learned some natural ways to lower cholesterol instead of medications…besides a diet low in saturated fat, they recommended Niacin (vitamin B3) to increase HDL (the “good” cholesterol), Omega 3 fatty acids to decrease triglycerides, red yeast rice to decrease total cholesterol and LDL, and plant sterols like Benecol to decrease total cholesterol.

Just because they are natural doesn’t mean they can’t have side effects (for example Niacin can cause skin flushing) so use them as directed and talk to your doc about them. I hope this helps your dad!

I actually just wrote a clinical nutrition exam today and hyperlipidemias was one of the topics we covered in that class! Polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats, soluble fiber (oats, legumes, barley), and soy protein are all good ways to reduce LDL cholesterol. 🙂

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it already, but my family swears by Bragg’s Apple Cider vinegar mixed in water with a little bit of honey. My dad recommended it to our cousin who was on cholesterol medicine and shortly after he started drinking this stuff, he no longer needs to take medication 🙂

Lately I’ve been loving sauteed kale, mushrooms, tomatoes, red pepper, and Swiss, topped with 2 fried eggs and broiled in the oven for 5 minutes! Delicious and ready in 15 minutes!

I love eggs! I eat three eggs every morning so I’m glad you mentioned how they don’t have a huge effect on cholesterol. I only eat my eggs scrambled, but I LOVE making dippy eggs (or overeasy). Luckily for me…and him, my boyfriend likes his eggs that way. I think I need to start trying new things in my eggs though, like spinach or peppers. One day I’ll take the stride.

I love eggs too, and everytime I have bloodwork done, my cholesterol is very good, and I eat 2 almost every day~yolks included! My favorite way to eat eggs? Slice avocado on toast, top with a over easy egg, top with Frank’s Red hot. YUMMM!

The article you linked to regarding lowering your cholesterol seems right on the money. My dad had high cholesterol and added all of those to his diet: oatmeal (daily), fish weekly (if not twice weekly), olive oil, walnuts (in his oatmeal), etc. My dad’s been active all his life so I think that has had something to do with it too. I think that at 71, he’s in the greatest health he’s ever been (mentally and physically). Often times, people mistake him for being 50!

I love my eggs poached or sunny-side up. I love a good eggs benedict with smoked salmon. The best eggs I ever had was at a brunch spot in Montreal. They had runny eggs (in the shell) with toasted sticks of bread, sauteed wild mushrooms and a truffle tapenade on top of the eggs. It was actually Sean’s choice for lunch but he let me have some.
