Banana Split Protein Shake

This is the reason why I never make oats in the microwave:

OATSPLOSION!

No matter what I do, how long I cook it for, how much water I add… it always ends up being time to clean the microwave.

I was willing to make the sacrifice and try out these new-to-me oats:

the half that was left after the mess was delicious 😉

How about a smoothie to go with the oat fail?

I was so excited to see frozen cherries at Sunflower Market- they can be hard to find- but strawberries would work just as well.

A little dessert-inspired bfast:

So good 🙂

This morning, we’re going to hang out and take it as a Sunday to plan for the week. The Pilot is home today for the holiday and off on Friday- his parents, sis and nephew are coming to visit this weekend. We’re so excited to see them, and little Liv can’t wait to meet the rest of her family <3

Hope you have a Happy Monday!

xoxo

Something to talk about: We went with the fam to Good Egg for breakfast yesterday, and I was surprised to see that they redid the menus to include nutritional stats, a rarity in Tucson. It was kind of fun to go through the menu and check out the calorie counts for some of my favorite items. Many of the menu options surprised me –like my favorite omelet, which was low in cals, and the turkey sausage, which was on the high end of the spectrum. Quite a few cities have been required to post this info for quite some time but it’s very new to Tucson. In your city, are nutritional stats clearly posted? Is it something that you’re mindful of, or not so much?

Restaurants here rarely have nutritional information on the menus – you usually have to go online if you want to find them. And even then, they don’t always have them posted. Sometimes I think it’s better that I DON’T know the calorie content of what I order. 😛

If I remember correctly, in Maryland, nutritional stats are required in all restaurants with more than 3 locations statewide. Not that I went with any frequency, but now it is the sole reason I stopped going to a restaurant called Red Robin. The average number of calories for all dishes was probably 800! Some dishes were 1000+!!! I would go with my girlfriends when they had to bring their kids along bc it’s such a wonderfully kid friendly environment but with those stats, I’m staying far far away for good!

nope! nutritional stats aren’t usually posted in st. louis! but i’m pretty mindful of everything i order anyway, so i don’t miss it too much. however, i’m sure i’d be up for some surprises if they did post ’em!

i would love for them to start this where i live. but texas is full of “the most overweight cities in america” so i’m sure a lot of people would object. but i think it would be a VERY good thing!

My recipe for successful microwave oatmeal is to add 1/2 the water to the oatmeal, stir and nuke for one minute. Add the rest of the water and any add ins, stir and nuke for another minute. Then let stand about two minutes for the water to finish absorbing. Perfect every time and no boilovers.

In New York all the chain restaurants have calorie count. Its a bit terrifying and makes eating out a stressful experience. While I am not on any particular diet, and simply try to be mindful of my eating, I get incredibly anxious reading the nutrition facts. It does however get me to think twice about what I am ordering from Applebees or what drink I want to start my day off with at Starbucks

We don’t have many restaurants like that here by me, which I’m glad about. As much as I understand the reasoning behind putting calories out there, as someone who has recovered from an eating disorder, I know it can be very triggering for folks in the depths of an ED and even uncomfortable for recovered folks like me.

Not sure if someone mentioned this, but my trick for microwave oats is 2.5-3 minutes on 50 or 60% power — depending on if I have “instant” or “slow cook” oats — less power for the latter because they tend to have more exploding tendencies than the instant ones.

    • Michaela on February 21, 2012 at 5:17 pm

I reduce the power too. It never explodes. My method is 3 minutes with 70% power for 1/2 cup of oats, 1 cup of liquid.

Stats are posted on every menu here. I find it kind of annoying… but only because i cant ignore it and it actually makes the picking out food process very obsessive for me (in a bad way)…but then again, maybe thats the point, so that people pay attention.

I love the idea of posting Nutritional Stats! A lot of time something on the menu that I think is “healthy” turns out not to be or vice versa. It’s nice to know for sure 🙂 My husband said that at the new Yankee ballpark, they have Nutrition Stats next to all the ball park food. DAGGER!

This sounds so yummy !! Can’t wait to try !!

ahhhhh I totally hate when that happens with my oatmeal too! I have it down pretty good to avoid explosions, but it always seems to happen when I am in a rush! haha…so annoying!

Homemade lara bar type things are the best. Obviously so much cheaper and (to me) better. My kids eat them, too. I find if I just eat handfuls of nuts and fruit, I go overboard too easy. This is a better way for me to portion out how much I’m eating as well. http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/chocolate-covered-recipes/fudge-baby-mania/

Hi! I don’t know if you have a Fresh & Easy where you live, but they make amazing frozen steel cut oatmeal “pucks” that are pefect in the microwave for 2 minutes and they never explode!
Also, Target is a great place to get frozen cherries. Costco, too!

      costco! you’re a genius

They don’t really post nutritional stats in restaurants in my city yet, but Portland, OR is close to me, and they post the stats on basically everything which is so nice. And I feel like now that I’ve got a little better understanding of what kind of stats are good for me it makes choosing my meals a lot easier. I hope the requirement continues to spread and that eventually every restaurant is required to show them. Sometimes people just have no idea how the food they eat is for them! Also, your smoothie looks delicious. Do you have a preferred brand of protein powder that you like?
