Meg: Sock Bun

As much as I love rocking a top-knot, it’s not always polished enough for dressy occasions. Here’s a simple and lovely upgrade that looks much more put together.

The biggest tip I can give when trying the sock bun is to practice. You probably won’t get it perfect it the first time you try, but keep trying! Start out with a slick ponytail on the top of your head.

(please excuse my horribly bad part!)

Cut the toe off of a new (or WASHED) sock. I opted for a clean used sock 🙂

Roll up the sock so until it’s shaped like a thick band.

Starting toward the end of your ponytail, begin rolling your hair using the band. Flip the sock down as you go. This is the part you’ll need to practice!

Tuck in any loose ends and secure with a bobby pin.

There you have it! A much more chic take on the top-knot. Wear this to a wedding or on a hot date and prepare yourself for compliments 😉

I LOVED sock buns when my hair was shorter! Now that its super long, if I do a sock bun, the bun ends up bigger then my head! Pretty comical if I do say so myself…

And can i just say I love your bangs?!?! I love straight across bangs but unfortunately they totally don’t fit my face:(

My hair is really long also, so I put the sock at the base of my ponytail and then wrap the ponytail around the sock. It’s a slightly different effect, but gives a similarly polished look.

Looks AWESOME but I do not understand the step 3, what do you mean “begin rolling your hair using the band?” How do I do that??

I’d love to try this, but I don’t understand. : ( Do you wrap the sock around the pony before you start rolling or do you fold it in half and roll the hair over it? Or something completely different? I’m hair challenged.

I agree with Jess T.! You should do a vlog on it so we can see it better! 🙂

Great tutorial! If you have issues rolling your hair around the sock you can also pull the sock all the way down to the base of your ponytail, splay your ponytail over the sock (until the whole sock is covered) place another ponytail holder around the base of the ponytail (over the sock and splayed hair) and wrap the excess hair around the base of the sock bobby pinning as you go. I hope that makes sense! This way works a little better with the long part of a tube sock. I used to do this all the time for dance recitals, but I’ve never seen the rolling method! I’ll have to try that way sometime too!

Wow the sock bun looks so good with your hair! My hair is much shorter and layered quite a bit, so the sock bun only works for me with my hair wet out of the shower. It takes a while for it to look anything like yours!

Jess & Kelsey, it’s difficult to explain without a video! Just search for sock buns on YouTube. That’s where I learned how to do mine :o)

I totally want to try this! Looks adorable!

I was wondering – why use a sock instead of a scrunchie?

    • Julie on August 30, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Me too… I’ve always just used a scrunchie.

Hmmm I might practice this and try to pull it off at a wedding I need to attend next weekend!

This looks absolutely adorable, and easy! So easy even I might be able to do it lol.

tip if you don’t want an enormous blob on top of your head (like if you actually want to look professional)

buy a small sock (like the girls socks you get in the dollar bins at the front area of most target stores).

they’re thin and the hole in the center after cutting and rolling the sock is much smaller (my hair is really long and thick, so I have to do this).

i’ve been doing it all wrong! i thought mine didn’t work because my hair was too thin. thanks – this will be perfect for days when i go to my internship and my hair isn’t cooperating!

I wore this last night. At first you could see my sock, but when I cut the sock shorter, it worked great!!
