Just what the doc ordered + Friday Faves

Sniffle soup all around!

Soup 1 of 1 5

(Please note the creeper in the background.)

Thank you for all of the get-well wishes. I’m still fighting the good fight. Yesterday we laid low, drank lots of tea, watched some Elmo on Youtube while snuggling, and had chicken, carrot and rice soup for dinner. I figured it would be a comforting, simple meal we could all enjoy, plus it took about 10 minutes of prep to put together.

Pinterest is getting into my brain:

Soup 1 of 1 4

The technique wasn’t as time consuming as it looks; it maybe added a couple of minutes to the prep time. I was just planning on cutting a few to put in Liv’s soup (not that she would notice, but you know), and ended up doing the entire batch.

Slow-cooked chicken and carrots (with garlic, thyme, salt and pepper), topped with lots of brown rice

Rice 1 of 1

cooked in broth + a squeeze of lime juice (<– the secret), salt and pepper.

I’ve also been drinking lots of tea, eating jalapeños like bell peppers, and ordering things from Amazon.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Zuzana and can’t wait to try her new workout DVDs. There are 3 in the set of $15- pretty insane deal. I’ll be anxiously checking the mailbox until they get here 😉

Since it’s been kind of a weird week, workouts have been pretty scarce. I took Thursday off, will probably take today off, and have been living vicariously through your awesome pics.

Here are some of the faves:

Erica did the walking workout twice and covered 5 miles:

(rock star!)

Molly tried the kale salad with goat cheese and jalapenos

Cara got some awesome Old Navy workout gear:

Chantelle made protein pancakes for the week:

And I have no pic, but I had my first Ocho bar, which was in my Whole Foods swag bag. Um, if you find the rock I’ve been living under, please flip it over for me. It was like a Mounds bars (dark chocolate and coconut), made with real (and organic!) ingredients. Amazing.

This morning, Liv and I are off to get some supplies for her birthday party and a green juice.

Hope you have a wonderful Friday! See ya later with a fun blast from the past post.

xoxo

Oh my gosh, that is so cute that you cut out her carrots like hearts! I’m not sure I’d ever have the patience for that, especially sick, but then again I don’t have a little one yet either 😉
    I hope you feel better!

  3. Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian on January 18, 2013 at 10:38 am

Chicken soup is the best when you feel sick! And how adorable are these carrot hearts?? Get well soon, all of you!!

  7. Amanda @ .running with spoons. on January 18, 2013 at 10:51 am

It’s been so cold and gloomy around these parts, and that slow cooker chicken, carrot, and rice meal looks like the absolute perfect bowl of comfort. Actually, it reminds me a lot of the meals my mom would make for me when I was sick as a little kid… she didn’t cut the carrots into hearts, though 😉 Hope you guys are feeling better!

Zuzana has come a long way! From x-rated movies to cardio DVD’s!

    Get well soon!

    • Fitnessista on January 18, 2013 at 11:29 am

haha just goes to show you don’t have to end the same way you start 😉

      • Yaara Leve on January 18, 2013 at 12:54 pm

Love the heart shaped carrot! 🙂

I got zuzana’s DVD’s too! So far I did two days. Im hurting, but I LOVE it! She also includes a warmup and cooldown which is super nice since I am always chinsey on that part…

I tagged her in twitter the other day about me getting the DVD and she actually mentioned me back saying hope I like it and let her know how it goes. Talk about motivation to keep me committed! I def screen shot that. 😉 hehe

Have you tried TJs organic frozen brown rice? It’s great if you are short on time. Happy Friday!

    • Fitnessista on January 18, 2013 at 12:06 pm

yes, i love it! it’s pricey (for rice) though, so i’ll just usually boil my own

  11. Carley @ Optimistichealth on January 18, 2013 at 11:51 am

Hahaha that’s awesome regarding the heart shaped carrots!

  12. Rachel B @ Busy Mama Fitness on January 18, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Oh I love Zuzana and have been so curious about her DVD’s! Can’t wait to hear how you like them!

  13. J'Wana @ Massage Mom Fitness on January 18, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Those carrot hearts are so cute! I bet my daughter would love them and maybe it would get her to actually eat carrots! What a great idea!

  14. Karen on January 18, 2013 at 12:20 pm

I love how Bella is in the background in a lot of your photos just staring up at you! So cute. I have a Bella too, she’s a shih tzu. 🙂

  15. Lea on January 18, 2013 at 12:38 pm

I just did a Zuzka workout this morning! She’s great. I always end up with a sore shoulder or two from all the crazy different push-up positions she has in her workouts. I would not want to arm wrestle that chick!

  16. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on January 18, 2013 at 12:48 pm

Chicken soup is so good for the soul when sick! Feel better!

  17. Lindsey Giles on January 18, 2013 at 12:50 pm

Love the Zuzkalight youtube channel! I do one of her workouts at least once a week. I swear that doing her workouts a few times a week was what got me back in shape after having a baby this last May. Do you happen to know why she goes by both Zuzana and Zuzka? Maybe Zuzka is a nickname? Or did she go by Zuzana for Bodyrock and then switch to Zuzka when she started doing her own thing? Just something I’ve been puzzling over 🙂

  18. Sheena on January 18, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Was that little plate of chicken and carrots for the creeper? 😉

Being sick sucks. I wouldn’t say that I like being under the weather, but in some ways at least you get to relax and enjoy feeling cozy. Feel better soon. 🙂

  19. Mary on January 18, 2013 at 1:47 pm

i love zuzana! i had no idea she came out with dvds. i like doing her youtube workouts (when my internet is cooperating) so im super excited to try these. can you do a review of them once you try them out? hope you and the family feel better soon!

  20. Clare @ Fitting It All In on January 18, 2013 at 1:56 pm

oooh can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the DVDs!! I’ve done some of hers on youtube and loved them!

  21. Joanne @ A Nicer Choice on January 18, 2013 at 2:12 pm

You have my full sympathy, we have a house (almost) full of sickness here too. I’m going to whip up a huge batch of veggie soup to last us through the snowy weekend. I may have to try the carrot hearts 🙂

I hope you all feel better soon!

  22. Potatoes and Pilates on January 18, 2013 at 2:41 pm

Feel better Gina! I had an awful flu earlier this month and found hot baths with epsom salts made me feel a lot better.

P.S. The goat, jalepeno and kale salad looks amazing! Must try.

  23. Liesl on January 18, 2013 at 3:04 pm

I really like Zuzana’s workouts too! Very cool that she has a DVD series out now.
I’d love your review on it though. 🙂
Is she as revealing on the DVDs (in what she wears) as she is on her youtube channel?

It doesn’t bother me, but I work out with my husband and other guys and girls sometimes, and I just wish she wouldn’t show quite as much cleavage.

  24. Andrea @ Vegvacious on January 18, 2013 at 4:49 pm

Hope you & your family get well soon Gina!

  25. Erica on January 18, 2013 at 5:41 pm

There I am!!!! And it’s so funny because after I started the workout, I was like “Oooh, this is really hard! Maybe I’ll do something different…” But then you flashed through my mind and thought, “Nope. I’m gonna do this and live to tell Gina about it.” 🙂

But more importantly-I hope you all feel better soon! I’m sure the heart shaped carrots have special healing powers;)

  26. sara @ fitcupcaker on January 18, 2013 at 5:52 pm

    I love goat cheese! Yum!

  27. Erin O. on January 18, 2013 at 9:56 pm

I just ordered the dvd’s as well, although getting them was hard (I am Canadian!) . I cant wait to do the 30 day program!

  28. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on January 19, 2013 at 12:25 am

Haha, I love your “creeper in the background” comment – so funny 🙂 Feel better soon!

  29. Joanne on January 19, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Gina – we can’t get the Zuzana DVDs in Canada yet so I would love your review on them when you get a chance! I incorporate Zuzana’s workouts into my routine and love them so am anxious to hear how these DVDs are.

Thanks also for the tip on Old Navy workout gear. I immediately went and checked it out and found some goodies. I don’t know if you have ever tried the Gap workout gear but I love their pants (even more than the more expensive brands). Given Old Navy and Gap are same parent company they are likely similar.

    Just a thought.

Thanks again and happy Saturday from snowy Canada!

    Hi Gina,

A friend and I have debated on Zuzana’s workouts as to how effective they are for certain body types. I feel that with continued practice they would show results for anyone, however my friend who is carrying some extra weight and soft skin rolls around their middle (after losing weight post pregnancy and being overweight for most of their life before that) feels that unless you are already slim, workouts of 20 mins or less as Zuzana’s are won’t bring great results. Would you please share your thoughts?

    Thank you!
    Casey
