March Greens!

We spent the morning playing at the Children’s Museum with friends- it’s one of Liv’s favorite spots.

Behind the scenes of playtime, the tow truck and the Pilot were on the way to rescue us.. my car decided to flip out on the way there. The coolant indicator light went off in orange (which means to get it checked at your convenience) for about 20 seconds until it turned red, which is a bad sign. I don’t know a lot about cars but definitely know coolant is serious business- thankfully we were already close to our destination when it happened, otherwise, we would have been stranded on the way. Not sure what Betty’s fate is, as I’m still waiting for the repair shop to call back :/

Broken phone, broken car, broken toe… they say it comes in threes. Hopefully we’re done now!

I’m currently eating a giant bowl of breakfast cookie dough cereal:

Cookie cereal 1 of 1

For the nut butter portion, I used some almond butter my friend Sarah from San Diego sent me. Such an awesome surprise! I can tell that it has a little bit of coconut oil in it and the texture is amazingly similar to Justin’s nut butters. SO good.

Another recent foodie treat:

Spices 1 of 1 2

A friend from work gave me a ton of new spices to try, which work well as meat rubs. One of them has espresso powder and they all smell heavenly.

Hot bar snack:

Hot bar 1 of 1

Chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes, grape leaves, sweet potato wedges, broccoli, salad (which had scallions, cabbage and a glorious sesame dressing)

In the month of March I’m going to emphasize salads again, since the weather is warming up and the theme for March is GREEN. In addition to enjoying more fresh fruit and veggie salads (like this one… it’s a staple right now), I’m also going to experiment with new salad recipes. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut. Who’s joining me? We can use the hashtag #greensformarch – I can’t wait to see your awesome salad pics.

Hope you’re having an amazing Friday.

See ya soon on the Fashion page- I have a great post from Meg to share with you.

xoxo

Gina

Sponsor shout out: A few of you have let me know about the pop up ad on the bottom of the page. I’m getting it sorted out right now (I thought it was just going to be a footer ad, didn’t know it would be blocking content or you’d have to click out of it. I’m sorry about that). As of right now, most of my ads are chosen for me through a couple of ad networks. I’ve opted out of certain campaigns and companies I don’t agree with. I’d love to eventually have ads that I’ve curated myself for individuals and companies I use regularly and choose as partnerships. This month is the first month I’m starting to do a little more of that, so thank you so much to Nike for being a March sponsor! I always have been and will continue to be totally transparent with you guys about stuff like this- the blog is something I enjoy so much and everyday I’m thankful it helps me to support our family…. or in this case, helping towards my broken car. <3

Oh no I hope your car is okay! I’m in college so I still have my first car and it’s really old with a lot of miles. My fiance and are I likely moving after we get married this summer if he gets the job he wants and I’m just praying for my car to last that long!!

Hope the car is okay! Hate when that stuff happens.
I have no clue how to manage my car at all.
I love the March green challenge! Ever since finding out I can’t have kale anymore (sadness), I’ve been needing to try out some new greens! I’m currently looking at swiss chard to take over for my kale love.

    Sorry about your car!

Love the greens challenge! I’m going to start with green juice tomorrow morning 🙂

  4. Michelle on March 1, 2013 at 4:37 pm

I am so in on the greens of march challenge!! I can not get enough greens lately and I love seeing new salad ideas!!

  5. Sarah @ Yogi in Action on March 1, 2013 at 4:48 pm

I’m always afraid my car will break down- mostly cause I have no clue’s of how a car works, and would be absolutely screwed if my car broke down suddenly.

Glad to hear you at least got to your destination first! Sounds like you guys managed to turn it around.

LOOOVE salads but I really need to change up the dressings! I always tend to use the SAME one.

Also, no worries about the ads. Nike is mainstream, I don’t mind clicking off of it to get to your content. Whatever it takes to keep you posting!

  7. Jeannie on March 1, 2013 at 5:17 pm

Oh no your car and toe! Hope all gets fixed.
Love the idea of march greens and salads!
That is a huge bowl of oats looks yum…the salad bar snack looks so good too.
Don’t mind the sponsors at all….just keep on posting. 🙂

Just an FYI in case you weren’t aware, that burstnet/nike/dick’s ad pops up and covers your entire blog’s home page every time. :/

    • Fitnessista on March 1, 2013 at 5:49 pm

i know, we’re working on fixing it. the designers are out for the day, but will have a new code for me on monday

    • Tiffany on March 1, 2013 at 5:49 pm

Scratch that… I didn’t even see your “Sponsor shout out”… ironically because the ad was blocking it. Ha!

      • Fitnessista on March 1, 2013 at 5:51 pm

        hahah! that’s definitely ironic

  9. RunEatRepeat on March 1, 2013 at 5:49 pm

At least it’s broken stuff and everyone is alive and well, right 🙂 My mom always reminds me broken stuff can be fixed.

Love #greensformarch! Its definitely salad weather out here (80 degrees for our beach trip today!) so I’ve been eating kale salad all week. Nom nom.

Que paso con tu coche? Is that even grammatically correct? haha

  11. Cassie Vaughn on March 1, 2013 at 6:47 pm

I actually had already decided that my March goal was spinach with lunch and salad with dinner every day Monday-Friday! So this is awesome!

  12. Irene on March 1, 2013 at 6:54 pm

I’ve always appreciated your philosophy toward ads. I’m happy you earn income from the blog (I’m sure it is a TON of work) but I can’t stand huge pop up ads. I really do stop reading sites because of them, so I’m really glad you let us know you are planning to get rid of it (and by that I mean moving it off to the side). Keep up the good work!

  13. Tara on March 1, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Oh no! Sorry about your car. Luckily, I haven’t had any huge problems besides one time during a road trip to Santa Barbara with my boyfriend. My tire just popped along the way!

  14. Jenny on March 1, 2013 at 8:01 pm

I wish I had remembered to take a pic but dinner tonight was a glorious salad of kale, spinach, roasted brussle sprouts, and tomatoes. Yeah for a green start to March!

  15. Ashley @ Life and Fitness on March 1, 2013 at 8:23 pm

Hopefully your car just needs a quick repair! Surprise packages in the mail are the best!

  16. Lauren @ Eat Like An Elephant on March 1, 2013 at 8:27 pm

Haha wow this post is right on time for me, because just yesterday I decided I needed to rededicate myself to greens after a couple of crazy weeks which led to some not quite as green eating. Today was Day 1 for me, so I’m excited for March greens! Love em 🙂

  17. april on March 1, 2013 at 8:48 pm

your giant bowl of breakfast cookie dough cereal looks glorious!

also, loving the #greensformarch idea! i’ve been trying to eat more salads, so this will serve as a great motivator =)

hope your car problems are easily repaired. have a great weekend!

  18. Mackenzie on March 1, 2013 at 8:51 pm

I’m in for the Marxg challenge! Do you have Sarah’s recipe for almond butter? I’ve been wanting to try making my own.

  19. Annie Bananie on March 1, 2013 at 10:24 pm

    Hope your car gets fixed!

Maybe this month you could do a ‘focus on’ different types of greens? Chard, mustard greens, kale, etc. I usually stick with romaine, kale, and spinach, and need to expand my horizons, but I’m scared! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2013 at 12:21 am

sure! in the “10 ways” post, i’ll give tons of ideas to switch it up 🙂

  20. Meg @ A Dash of Meg on March 1, 2013 at 10:53 pm

I love the hashtag greensformarch! amazing Gina 🙂 I will definitely have to do some delicious salads so I can join in with you 🙂

  21. Stacey Jennings on March 2, 2013 at 12:34 am

  22. Ali on March 2, 2013 at 2:05 am

    Does green juice count?

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2013 at 11:35 am

      Yes!

  23. Lucie@fitswisschick on March 2, 2013 at 2:19 am

Aaah, such a great challenge!! I am definitely in, so excited now and motivated. Spring is coming next week we go up to 17 degrees Celsius coming from minus 5!
Sorry for all the broken things, we say ‘break a thing, mend your luck’ – hope that is true 🙂

  24. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on March 2, 2013 at 8:27 am

You must have read my mind – earlier this week I decided I needed to hop back on the greens bandwagon after slacking on eating them for a few months. So I picked myself up a few bunches of kale and I’ve been eating a massaged kale salad almost every day!

  25. Heidi on March 2, 2013 at 8:32 am

I love the green challenge for March!! Incorporating greens into as many meals as possible really helps me to feel more full and make sure I am getting the most nutrients each day. I love the idea of focusing on this for the month of March!

I have serious cereal envy after reading this post!

  26. Rebecca on March 2, 2013 at 9:46 am

Ugh, I’ve had coolant problems before. A few years back, I had an oil change done and for whatever reason (and they denied it at first) someone touched the coolant cap and by the time I got back to work, I spilled out almost all of my coolant. Didn’t realize it at first. So I parked the car and worked for a few more hours. After, I had to drive to Toronto, so I was about 10km down the highway when my jeep started to smell like a photo lab (I used to work in one) and my gauges all went nuts. Called hubby and he starts freaking out saying to stop driving. Made it to the nearest auto service centre and yup, no more coolant. Super fun experience!!
