all-new barre burner

Hi friends! Happy almost-Friday 🙂 Thank you so much for all of your early bird words of wisdom. I think if I make it a priority and go to bed earlier (consistently), it will become a lot easier.

A few of you asked about the hormonal thing, so I thought I’d write a little blip about it. When I was seeing my homeopathic doctor, he checked my hormone levels throughout the day. They’re supposed to be in the morning, and then get lower in the early evening so it’s easier to wind down and go to bed. Mine were backwards. I had the worst time getting out of bed in the morning, but had so much energy to teach intense cardio classes at night. The herbal supplements I took helped to regulate my hormones, and when I was pregnant, I also found out I was low in iron which can impact energy levels. I’m considering getting my blood levels checked and taking another iron supplement if I need to.

Iron

(I took Floradix for iron and loved it)

So many things can affect energy: stress, sleep (of course), water intake, fruit and veggie intake, taking a multivitamin, caffeine, workouts — so I’ve started taking my multivitamins again and plan on going to bed early. For the most part 😉

Juice 1 of 1

I was up pretty late last night because we had a girls’ night on the books. In Tucson, my military wife friends get together less than we did in Valdosta, mostly because our husbands don’t go on long deployments (they’re instructors) and everyone is scattered all over town. We make an effort to do little things on our own since there are very few “official” squadron wife events, whether they’re play dates to the museum or zoo, or a girls’ night out to dinner or at someone’s house. I love getting to see them, especially since I’ve been friends with many of them since the Valdosta days or even the North Carolina days.

It was a great evening, and then I came home to finish uploading a new barre video:

Barre burner

This one is 7 minutes, and includes some work for your quads, hamstrings, triceps and glutes. Feel free to repeat it, or combine with any of the other barre workouts on our YouTube channel!

Please let me know how it goes! 🙂

I’m off to do the work thing.. DJ Dance and Zumba today!

Hope you have a wonderful morning.

xoxo

Gina

I’m sorry you’re having problems with your hormones! Sometimes they can get so out of whack for some reason. You take excellent care of yourself, though, so I’m sure you’ll be fully healthy soon!

I recently purchased a barre method workout DVD and am eager to give this form of exercise a try. I love that your videos are quick and effective, perfect to throw in at the end of a workout for an added challenge.

My energy has been all over lately, and I’m getting a hormone test done. Hoping that will show some answers for me. But, you’re right – so much effects stress so I’m really trying to cut down on unnecessary stresses in my life right now.
The green juice looks so pretty! I can’t get enough of them lately.
And I also can’t wait to try the barre burner. I need some more barre in my life.

Thanks for the Barre Burner. It was perfect for a hotel. I just used the arm of a treadmill in the fitness room because I didn’t want to offend my family with my sweaty post run body in our room. Kansas is much warmer than Germany!

what herbal supplements did you take to balance your hormones?

    • Fitnessista on July 11, 2013 at 12:37 pm

i don’t remember 🙁 it was a few years ago and at one point, i was taking 8 different things! might be worth talking to a doc in your area

I had no idea that the foods you ate could so highly affect your hormones! No wonder eating fresh and natural eats make me feel so much better. Thanks for the great workout!

I love this barre workout! But where do I get a barre now? Do you think it would be all right to just use the edge of a desk or commode?

  7. Sara @ LovingOnTheRun on July 11, 2013 at 11:41 am

I love that you post these videos!! I have really wanted to try Barre but no where around here offers it – sometimes smaller towns aren’t fun! Can’t wait to try this one out!

Great video! I love a good barre class! Legs are shaking! 🙂

so happy you liked it 🙂

Thanks for mentioning the hormone problem it sounds like adrenal fatigue. I was diagnosed with it in the past but I never followed the protocol for very long because I read it wasn’t a real disorder. I am glad you found supplements that worked for you.

  10. Sarah @ Yogi in Action on July 11, 2013 at 12:21 pm

That’s interesting about the hormones! I wonder if that’s typical for people who categorize themselves as “night owls”? I know for me getting out of bed is hard, and then in the evening I’m wide awake. I never thought of it as hormones, but it makes sense that it would be! Thanks for providing more info on your own experience 🙂

How did you like the morning yoga class?

    • Fitnessista on July 11, 2013 at 12:22 pm

i LOVED it. it wasn’t as hot as i prefer, but the flow and instructor were fantastic

  11. Julie on July 11, 2013 at 12:23 pm

Echoing someone else above, do you mind me asking what supplements you took to help regulate your hormones? I’m having the same issue, canNOT get out of bed in the morning but have lots of energy at night. Thanks! xoxo

I had some bloodwork done a few weeks ago too. I’d been all over the place – which is unusual for me – with fatigue, some lightheadedness, etc… all my results came back in the normal range. Maybe iron was a little low but still within the normal parameters.

Anyways I did more digging around and research and switched my salt. What a difference. Couldn’t believe it. I should probably do a post on it. Anyway, the point for you and everyone really is that it’s important if you know something is not right to keep working at it. It could be a major thing but could also be something small. It’s worth it to feel great again. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 11, 2013 at 12:42 pm

what salt are you using now?

      • Ali @ Peaches and Football on July 11, 2013 at 1:00 pm

I’ll have to check the bag when I get home. I had been using Real Salt – but it doesn’t contain iodine and when I found a salt at my health store with iodine and made the switch, it was magic. I know some seaweed products contain iodine but for people who have non-iodized salt, that could play a role if they aren’t getting that from another source.

    I’m a barre-fly. Thanks for sharing!

  14. Tracy on July 11, 2013 at 1:55 pm

What did you like about the Floradix? It’s effectiveness, gentleness on system, etc? I take a slow release iron right now and wonder if Floradix would be a more natural alternative.

  15. Becca @ familyfaithfitness on July 11, 2013 at 2:53 pm

I’m also trying to wake up early and do my workouts. Usually only happens once a week because the hubs has a meeting or something and I wouldn’t be able to do it at night.
Pretty excited to try the new routine! LOVING barre!!!

  16. Kris @ kriswithbliss.com on July 11, 2013 at 3:12 pm

I am very interested in that Floradix as I have iron issues too! You just threw it in your smoothie? Or on its own?

  17. Katie on July 11, 2013 at 3:39 pm

Hi Gina, love your blog. Have a question, maybe a suggestion for a topic… Could you talk about spirulina, chlorella, blue green algae… All those weird supplements that sound like they’re found at the bottom of a lake… How often to take them, how they benefit you, etc. Thanks!

  18. Liesl @ Fitnessinthekitchen on July 11, 2013 at 4:09 pm

    Hey Gina!!
Thanks for all your hard work on the barre workouts. I’d love to try one of them, but my internet connection is too slow to download video.
I know it would be alot of work to just do a write up of kind of how the workout goes, but if you did that with your next one…text underneath the video or something that would be awesome! I know one person, me, would appreciate it!
    THanks!

  19. Alicia on July 11, 2013 at 8:37 pm

Hey Gina. Have you tired the raw iron? I can’t remember the brand but it’s all raw ingredients so goes into your system like normal food! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 11, 2013 at 10:53 pm

i haven’t, but a friend of mine takes it and loves it

  20. Melissa @My Peach Life on July 11, 2013 at 8:50 pm

That is so interesting about your hormone levels. I am the same way! I HATE waking up in the morning it is the worst but at 8:00 at night I am ready for a hardcore workout or to clean my house!

  21. Bri on July 11, 2013 at 10:34 pm

Just tried out your workout. This is the first one I have done from you guys, and let me just say my legs are BURNING! Haha! The first exercise you had us do where we were squatting, I had to stand up a few times. Whew! Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to see more. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 11, 2013 at 11:36 pm

whoo hoo! so happy you liked it 🙂

  22. Beverly Aragon on July 11, 2013 at 11:14 pm

I wonder if my hormones are out of wack then because I have more energy at night now too (I just switched back from being a morning person!). Definitely something I should check out!

  25. Kim on July 12, 2013 at 10:58 am

    Hi Gina!

Just curious (I’m kinda nosy and ask this question to all the health conscious people that I can): what supplements are you taking, and which ones are you giving your little girl (if any)?

    Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2013 at 11:34 am

i take a prenatal multivitamin. livi doesn’t take anything since she drinks organic whole milk and loves to eat healthy foods. she’ll probably take a multivitamin eventually, but not at least until the ped suggests it

  26. Krystal on July 12, 2013 at 11:41 am

I am with you on the hormonal issues. I have always been a morning person, but it is so hard to get out of bed lately.

I have a hair appointment shortly, and I haven’t had the energy to workout yet. I just did this Barrre Burner, and I feel a little better. I will try to do something else later.

    Thanks Gina!

  27. Mary Jane on July 12, 2013 at 5:25 pm

This may be a silly question, but what do you recommend using for this workout while at home? I don’t have a bar. 🙂 Would the back of the couch or something work? Thanks!

  28. Missy on July 12, 2013 at 8:52 pm

I’m glad you post videos like these because there are no barre classes available where I am 🙁

Just recently, my gym announced a new class called “Ballet Barre” and I woke up super early on my day off to go. So. Disappointing. The entire hour was focused on our posture and breathing. Nothing like yoga. Nothing like pilates. Nothing like barre. I walked away very confused.

  29. Laura B on July 13, 2013 at 12:40 am

Love the barre burners! They leave my legs burning! My goal is to get through the very first one you posted without taking the one break I need, but I’m not there yet. Makes me want to checkout a full barre class.

  30. Robin Vernon on July 13, 2013 at 8:58 am

LOVED the Barre workout. Felt it in my gluts immediately. We are considering adding at my gym so was wondering what was involved and how to get certified……….

    • Fitnessista on July 14, 2013 at 4:39 pm
