Barre/HIIT Combo {video}

Today, I have an all-new video workout to share, and it’s something a little different: barre + HIIT!

Barre and HIIT Workout Video

Two of my favorite workouts had a lovechild, and it is this workout. If you enjoy it, I’d be happy to create some similar workouts in upcoming videos.

Barre Interval Training

I was inspired to create this one because while barre is one of my favorite workouts, it doesn’t include much cardio. By adding in some low-impact intervals, I was able to successfully raise my heart rate and get a good sweat going in between sets.

This workout is short – just 12 minutes! – and can be completed up to 3 times today. For even more bang for your buck, I suggest doing the workout above + total body barre strength workout (just grab some light dumbbells) + this ab burner. Less than 30 minutes for a balanced total body workout.

Barre HIIT Workout

Barre + HIIT Workout Tips and Disclaimers

-As always, check with a doc before making any fitness changes. Honor your body; modify and rest as needed!

-Those with hip/knee/joint considerations should be mindful of these exercises as they include deep flexion at the knee and hip joints. If you have significant knee, joint or hip considerations or past injuries, this may be one to skip. If you need to, modify the exercises, or potentially decrease the range of motion.

-The intervals in this workout are low impact, but high intensity. If you’d like to add impact movements (jumping), I give some guidelines for that, too.

-Please let me know if you give it a try! Hope you love it. 🙂

xoxo

Two of your workouts had a love child! HAHAHHA! LOVE it!!! I have been seeing a lot about both of those, and I am tempted, but just get so scared with my running that I will tire myself out and not be able to train to the level I need to, or I will injure myself somehow. Now would be the time to try though as I am not racing for a little while…….hmmmm temptations! GREAT workout though!

You know what’s really hard, is when you squat/plie, you keep your tailbone tucked under.

Whoo, gets my legs and bum everytime!

    <3 your barre workouts!

  10. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on October 30, 2014 at 7:29 am

I love that you morphed the two! My personal issue with barre has always been that there is no cardio. Honestly I would do it more if it did.

    • Fitnessista on October 30, 2014 at 7:42 am

i think it’s a nice change of pace that it doesn’t include cardio, but also wish i did sometimes while i’m doing it. it would help break it up a bit, too 🙂

  11. Lauren on October 30, 2014 at 7:48 am

This was a great quick workout! My legs were burning during those lunges!

  17. Britt@MyOwnBalance on October 30, 2014 at 8:43 am

I love the idea of barre + HIIT. I’ve seen a few studios starting to get into this and I think it’s going to be big. Great video!

  18. Lauren @ ihadabiglunch on October 30, 2014 at 8:44 am

I’m still so pumped about that Fair Trade Giveaway! Fingers crossed 🙂 and I’m going to my first-ever barre workout tonight! Wish me luck!

  19. Ashley @ A Lady Goes West on October 30, 2014 at 9:12 am

I watched the video, and you’re so cute! Love this workout! 🙂

  20. Katie A. on October 30, 2014 at 9:53 am

This workout looks awesome! I do Dailey Method, and they have an “Interval” class that mixes in low-impact cardio moves. It’s sweaty and muscle-shaky and awesome!

  21. Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes on October 30, 2014 at 10:14 am

Thanks for doing a video to go along with this workout! It makes it so much easier when I can see the moves before I try to do them. 🙂

  22. Bethany on October 30, 2014 at 12:48 pm

I loved this!! I did combine it with the strength video (although not the abs, I’m still recovering from a c-section) and the combo was awesome, I felt the shaking for a few hours afterwards! That’s how you know it worked! 😉

  23. Jeanie on October 30, 2014 at 1:48 pm

    Great workout! Are you pregnant?

    • Fitnessista on October 30, 2014 at 1:58 pm

No, just like wearing baggy tanks
(Heads up: it’s polite to ask someone if she’s pregnant if the baby is crowning before your very eyes)

      • Yaara Leve on October 30, 2014 at 6:57 pm

OMG! Gina you DO NOT LOOK PREGNANT! I’m sorry–but to Jeanie–never ever ever ask a woman if she’s pregnant! Ever! Just a rule of decency!
I was actually thinking Gina looked super skinny lately.
I’ve been asked on multiple occasions if I’m pregnant because I’m constantly bloated because I consume so many veggies and my belly pooches out and I’m also really short–4 ft. 11in.–so the bloat has no where to go but the belly! I’m also apple-shaped which doesn’t help.
It really stings and it’s hard enough to have a positive body image!
        Just a heads up!

        • Fitnessista on October 30, 2014 at 9:31 pm

i’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt and think she was indicating that i had that awesome pregnancy glow instead of being nasty. 😉 thank you yaara, and yes, it’s hard enough to have a positive body image without women being so creepy/judge-y to each other.
          sending love to you <3

          • Hayley on October 31, 2014 at 2:04 am

Ow ow ow! From someone who has been asked the same in the past and even had someone raise their eyebrows and say ‘are you sure?’ That stings. Gina, your restrained and delicate return was evidence of your manners! I applaud you! Xxxxx

  24. Diane on October 30, 2014 at 2:02 pm

Great video! Really, really kicked my butt. Hope you make more videos 🙂

  25. Molly on October 30, 2014 at 3:40 pm

Hi Gina, when you workout, is it just for 30 minutes? If you did this workout yourself on a regular day, would you extend it or just workout for 30 minutes?

    • Fitnessista on October 30, 2014 at 4:36 pm

it depends on what i’m doing. if i’m teaching, it may be an hour of activity, or if i’m taking orange theory. if i did a similar workout to my video, i’d probably extend it to be 20 minutes (with glute and core work mixed in) and top it off with 10 minutes of rowing or sprint intervals. 30 min total 🙂

      • Molly on October 30, 2014 at 5:28 pm

That’s great. Is that “enough”? This is an idea I”m struggling with lately. How much exercise is “enough”? If the 30 minutes is intense is that enough or am I supposed to do an hour most days?

  26. Jessica Dumont on October 30, 2014 at 7:33 pm

Gina, LOVE! This was perfect. And apparently I’ve been doing lunges wrong for years.

    • Fitnessista on October 30, 2014 at 9:58 pm

so so happy to hear you liked it! 🙂 xo

  27. Becca on October 31, 2014 at 5:08 am

I tried it this morning. I have to admit that I’m not really a fan of barre but it’s nice to mix it up sometimes, and this was more interesting with the cardio part. If you make more barre + cardio videos, I’ll def give them a shot! Thanks for making this one!

  28. Missy on October 31, 2014 at 5:36 am

Just did this. Oh the burn!! I don’t know how you manage to do that without breaks!

Love this! Totally pinning for a day when I need to workout at home 🙂

  31. Hannah on November 3, 2014 at 4:58 pm

I just finished this workout. I’ve done many of your workouts in the past, but I loved this one! I hope more of these are to come. It’s a great workout without the super high intensity of solely HIIT.

    • Fitnessista on November 4, 2014 at 4:22 pm

<3 so awesome! another one on the way this thursday!

  32. m on July 13, 2015 at 4:50 am

  33. Cassie T on January 30, 2016 at 9:18 am

Checking in for yesterday’s steady state – had the group classroom at work all to myself, so thre myself a personal turbokick class 🙂

  34. Katie on March 6, 2016 at 4:49 pm

I tagged this workout on to an on demand BodyCombat sesh because we were in the mountains with no access to a gym this weekend, and OMG does my booty feel it today! I was like, “it is only 12 minutes, how hard can it be?” Famous last words, haha.
