Family: Bye, 1st Tri

I’m officially into the second trimester, and this pregnancy is FLYING by.

13 weeks:

13 weeks 1 of 1 2

w Livi, who had just woken up from her hap:

13 weeks 1 of 1

Highlights:

-Starting to feel little flutters. I can’t wait until they turn into full-blown kicks, and until Tom and Liv can feel the baby. When I eat something particularly delicious, or when I’m lying down before bed, being able to feel those tiny little jumps in there is one of my very favorite things. Of all of the beautiful moments in live, I’d have to say that feeling your baby move inside your body is one of the best. So funny that back in the day, way before Liv was a twinkle in our eyes, I thought being pregnant would be like having an alien inside of you. It’s not even close to being like that haha.

-Having an ultrasound! This one was external (high-five, world), and our tech was amazing. We decided to do the genetic screening, so I had a lovely 8 vials of blood taken (I had to lie on the fainter table but it ended up being quick and relatively painless. I was just starving since it was fasted. It’s a cruel joke to tell a pregnant women she can’t eat any food until after going down to the lab, waiting, and having blood taken. Breakfast cookie dough cereal was in the car for me haha.), and we get two ultrasounds (one at 13-14 weeks and one at 18-20 weeks). We did the genetic testing last time and decided to do it again, just in case we would need to do any extra preparation, reading, or classes before the baby’s arrival.

Back to the ultrasound: it was amazing. I keep thinking the baby is this tiny little bean floating around in there, and it’s definitely a real, human, beautiful baby. We got to check out a majority of the anatomy and the tech made a guess at the baby’s sex. Any guesses?! We’ll know for sure in about 4 weeks.

Ultrasound13weeks

I’m measuring a week ahead -baby was measuring 14 weeks instead of 13- so my due date may be changing.

-Reading Big Sister books with Liv. She loves this one, this one, and this one (thank you again to Kate, who recommended this one via Facebook!). After we’re done reading, sometimes she’ll kiss my belly goodnight and talk to the baby. It’s definitely one of the highlights of the day.

-Spreading the news. I was so, so excited to share the news with you all, and am beyond thankful for all of your love and kind wishes. <3

-Having a real-ish bump. People are starting to ask if I’m expecting, so it’s nice to know that I look pregnant instead of like I just ate a giant gluten-filled sandwich. I’m still wearing baggy shirts and dresses for now, unless I’m teaching.

Missing:

-Wine. Sometimes when the Pilot orders a glass with dinner, I take a big sniff and torture myself. I also joked-but-not-really-joking that I’ll be packing a bottle in my hospital bag.

-Sushi, but not too badly because The Joint has an awesome selection of vegan sushi. This one had tempeh and tons of veggies:

Vegan sushi for the win

-Sleeping on my back. Thankful for the Snoogle erryday.

Looking forward to:

-Finding out if we have another girl on the way, or a little boy!

-Talking about baby names

-Full-up kicks

-Starting to put the nursery together. We have one guest room, so we’ll keep the bed in there and add the crib. Even though it’s a small space, it will be fun maximize the area and put a little theme together. Here’s what Livi’s nursery looked like in Tucson. 🙂

-Planning a babymoon as a family. We thought it would be fun to plan a special vacation with the three of us before the baby makes his/her arrival, and plan something that Liv would love. We’ve been thinking about Hawaii, and would love any tips or ideas if you’ve vacationed there as a fam!

xoxo

Gina

I hit 19 weeks yesterday and I still haven’t been asked by anyone if I’m pregnant!

I didn’t stop sleeping on my back until last week and it’s such a nightmare. My hips were hurting every morning until I started putting a pillow between my knees at night. Little baby flutters are the best!

  2. Candice on April 13, 2015 at 3:13 pm

Ooohhh, I’m guessing girl since you’ve had dreams about having two little girls!

  3. Lara on April 13, 2015 at 3:16 pm

Obviously it is your choice, but my midwife okayed sushi for me as long as we are eating at reputable places! Thankfully! It’s hard to take away beer AND sushi ;).

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2015 at 3:19 pm

that makes me happy to hear! i’ll ask my next appointment. the sushi here is really fresh, and all i really want is spicy salmon roll 🙂

My whole extended family did a big vacation to Oahu last year to an area called Ko’olina. It’s where the Disney Aulani hotel is, but we stayed at the Marriott condos nearby. It was perfect for the kiddos — 4 yrs , 2 yrs and 6 months at the time. It’s such a fun, family friendly part of Hawaii! And it’s not super crowded on that side of the island, which is awesome. They have man-made lagoons for the beach area — so the beauty of the Pacific Ocean is safe for the little ones. And you can easily get to North Shore (paddle boarding!), Honolulu etc. Check it out! 🙂

So exciting! Baby moon sounds like a fan idea, we always say we will do this and then have never had money/time when I am pregnant. And I always regret not doing something! I missed sushi so badly when I was pregnant!

  6. Kate on April 13, 2015 at 3:42 pm

I think it looks like a boy! and by “looks like” i mean the only physical feature that would determine the sex haha

    • Alexa on April 14, 2015 at 7:52 am

      same! hahaha

  7. Amanda on April 13, 2015 at 3:46 pm

I’m expecting my second girl in a little over a month and have yet to get a nice profile ultrasound picture like what you shared above. Second pregnancies really do fly by. I’m so excited for you and your growing family.

I feel like I need a few more hints before I can guess what you are having. I’m still optimistic that we’ll get a boy someday, but a second girl will ensure we get good use out of everything and makes me feel less guilty about buying more clothes.

We went on our honeymoon to Belize. There are kid friendly resorts, the all-inclusive packages are reasonable and we didn’t experience big crowds. Often times, it felt like we owned the place. It was great. September is Belize’s off-season and is a great time to go.

  9. Lesley on April 13, 2015 at 4:09 pm

Hi Gina! Congrats on the pregnancy. I am 11 weeks with my second baby. There is a great website called Motherisk maintained by the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto with well-researched info on risks to women during pregnancy.
Here’s the link for food-borne illnesses (sushi)

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2015 at 4:16 pm

thank you so much, and congratulations to you too! thank you for sending the link along! this made me very happy: “Pregnant women need not avoid raw fish if it is obtained from a reputable establishment, stored properly, and consumed soon after purchase.” yessssss

  10. Christabel on April 13, 2015 at 4:11 pm

You have the most adorable bump! I’m excited to follow your journey as we’re still debating having a 2nd kid.

I really love vegetarian sushi so it was the beer + wine that missed the most!

  11. Lauren on April 13, 2015 at 4:19 pm

We just took the whole family to Maui and stayed at the Westin Villas in Lahaina! Rooms have a full kitchen. Which is great. And a safeway nearby to get groceries! It’s a timeshare property but we just booked rooms as a hotel guest as we don’t have a timeshare. I highly suggest checking out redweek.com. You can rent timeshares from owners (and get really good deals). We did this for next year and it was so simple!!

  12. Amie on April 13, 2015 at 4:30 pm

I’m 16 weeks now and still feeling nauseous and getting headaches daily. Ugh. Definitely already in maternity clothes!! It’s my 2nd and this did not happen last time! Our due dates are pretty close! I’m September 25th! I’ll guess another girl for you!!

  13. Janna on April 13, 2015 at 4:30 pm

Congrats! Hawaii is a great choice! It’s my favorite vacation I’ve been on so far. My family and I went to Maui (Wailea and Kanapali) and it was amazing! We stayed for 3 weeks and I still wasn’t ready to go home!

  14. Brandy on April 13, 2015 at 4:35 pm

Yep my midwives gave the sushi the ok too! And I really did take wine in my hospital bag when my son was born 🙂

  15. Jill on April 13, 2015 at 4:36 pm

Love the idea of a little family vacation. We went to Oahu and stayed at the most precious little Inn. We rented a 2 bedroom cottage and it was clean and bright and perfect for the fam. It had a beautiful deck and bar-b-que, and is literally a five minute drive from a number of gorgeous beaches in Wailea or Lahaina. There was also a lovely shaded pool and hot tub on site. We rented a car and explored the gorgeous little towns (you would love Paia), and drove along the stunning coastline, stopping to hike through trails to waterfalls and to watch surfers in the morning.

I think you mean Maui, not Oahu? Wailea is fabulous, and Wailea Beach is great for snorkeling and SUP-ing.

  16. Alicia on April 13, 2015 at 4:58 pm

For a family, the Four Seasons Maui is fantastic. Worth every cent!

  17. Stephanie M on April 13, 2015 at 5:20 pm

Whoa, that profile looks like Liv already! Can’t wait to see sibling comparison pics in a few months! 🙂

I am due Dec 10. I was 3 months behind you last time and it looks like I am 2 behind this time around. Looking forward to following your journey again.

  18. Kirsten on April 13, 2015 at 5:28 pm

You look gorgeous! I am so happy for you guys.

  19. Pam A on April 13, 2015 at 6:38 pm

I think it’s a girl! The tubercle angle is parallel to the spine! That’s what they looked at at our 12 week u/s. So fun!

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 8:38 am

off to google “tubercle angle” haha

  20. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on April 13, 2015 at 6:49 pm

  21. Catherine on April 13, 2015 at 7:38 pm

We just booked our first trip to Hawaii this week! We are going to Maui and Kauai. We are going in September to celebrate our 10th anniversary…which is actually October 16-your original due date

  22. Karen on April 13, 2015 at 7:50 pm

I started following your blog only a few days before Liv was born so I have not followed you while being pregnant and writing about it on your blog. I am looking forward to hearing your stories and seeing your family grow!
When I looked at the ultrasound pic I thought girl. Oh and Hawaii sounds like a nice babymoon destination! Best wishes to you 🙂

  23. Niki on April 13, 2015 at 9:06 pm

Congratulations!!!! So excited to hear your great news 🙂

As for Hawaii recommendations.. Maui was amazing. I stayed at the Four Seasons Wailea, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. So beautiful, amazing service, beautiful beach and pool, spa, gym.. it couldn’t have been more perfect. And if you go to Maui, make sure you visit Mama’s Fish house for dinner and get the macadamia nut crusted lobster stuffed mahi mahi. YUM!!!

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 8:37 am

beautiful- i will definitely check it out! kyle and meg went there for their honeymoon (and ate at mama’s fish house!) so we would love to check it out after hearing such great things

      • Alicia on April 14, 2015 at 7:17 pm

        Lobster guac from Mama’s…

If you choose the FS make sure to book through a FS Preferred Partner agent to receive complimentary breakfast(amazing with lots of g-free options), upgrade if available, and $100 resort credit.

  24. Leah on April 13, 2015 at 9:09 pm

Oh how I loved feeling those flutters and kicks when pregnant. Such a special time! I hope it’s a boy! I have one of each and it’s the best of both worlds, imo. Of course, either one is a blessing. Our perinatologist at 12 week scan guessed boy for my daughter. Apparently, he had never been wrong. So he was quite shocked at 20 weeks and I think not happy I ruined his guessing streak. Ha!
Have you been to Hawaii? We love, love Kauai. It’s very laid back. Kids enjoy the lagoon areas at some of the beaches. Perfect when they are young. Maui is great too. Last year we went to Wailea.

  25. Goldie on April 13, 2015 at 9:28 pm

You look lovely! Im 22 weeks with my rainbow baby after a previous loss.

I just wondered what changes you make activity/exercise wise at this time. I used to lift very heavy but have dramatically dropprd the amount and only do walking and swimming for cardio. Id like to stay active but its hard to know how and Google isn’t always helpful! Xx

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 8:36 am

      such wonderful news- congratulations <3
i will definitely do a post on how my workouts have changed!! xo

I bet it’ll be so exciting to see Liv’s reaction to feeling the baby kick!

  27. hayley on April 13, 2015 at 10:33 pm

So excited to find out if it’s a boy or a girl

  28. Nenelle Demos on April 13, 2015 at 10:34 pm

I’m in Australian and I was told not to eat sushi because of raw fish but also the cooked rice. It can easily grow bacteria and you can’t be sure how long the rice has been cooked for and where it has been stored.

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 8:36 am

interesting to think about! thankfully, the sushi here is pretty fresh, but definitely something i can ask

      • Nenelle Demos on April 14, 2015 at 3:50 pm

I would think it would be pretty fresh here too but I guess you never know! Maybe they mean don’t order from a sushi train as it might have been out of refrigeration for too long?

        • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 4:00 pm

that’s what i’m thinking! usually when we go for sushi, they make it there at the counter. i’ll ask the midwife to double-check but if she says yes, i’m going for it

          • Nenelle on April 14, 2015 at 4:03 pm

In Darwin, Australia we only really have the trains but I think you can also order from them. Please let me know what your midwife says! Also I sent you a Facebook message a few days ago re: pregnancy and exercise. I know you probably get a million a day but hope to hear from you soon.

          • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 4:11 pm

k i will look for it! it makes me break out in hives haha (so much spam!) but i will go in there if someone says they sent me a message 🙂

  29. Britt@MyOwnBalance on April 14, 2015 at 4:42 am

Kicks were my absolute favorite part of being pregnant! I’m guessing boy.

My husband would order a glass of wine at dinner and by the end of my second tri, I would take one sip. It was just enough! I also slept on my back all the way through. My doctor just had me put a pillow under one hip.

  30. Nikki on April 14, 2015 at 4:45 am

Why don’t you put up a little gender survey a few days before you find out? I think Girl!

  31. Crystal on April 14, 2015 at 4:54 am

Hawaii, specifically Maui, is my favorite place on earth. From what I’ve seen, it’s VERY family friendly. Can’t speak from firsthand experience, but I know a lot of people bring their families and stay in a condo so they can have more room, and cook some meals. If you go to Hawaii, eats lots of pineapple and shave ice for me 😉

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 8:35 am

love that idea so much! and yes, ALL THE PINEAPPLE 🙂

  32. Jacquelyn on April 14, 2015 at 7:38 am

Maui is amazing and would be awesome for a babymoon!!!!!

  33. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on April 14, 2015 at 7:56 am

The second trimester is the best! I suddenly feel like a new woman with my renewed energy and normal appetite again. 🙂 I can’t believe you’re already feeling flutters…how awesome is that?! I can’t WAIT to feel this baby move. I’m with you – feeling that baby inside of you is one of the most incredible things ever. You look so cute – love your bump!

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 8:33 am

it’s the best ever! the ultrasound tech said it’s because my placenta is posterior, so they’re much easier to feel that way
      hope you’re doing well <3

  34. Meg @ A Dash of Meg on April 14, 2015 at 9:52 am

so many exciting things! the gender, the name, and BABYMOON!!!!!! 🙂 can’t wait to hear everything 🙂 the baby is beautiful already <3

  35. Tracy on April 14, 2015 at 10:29 am

Such an exciting time! I agree with you about feeling baby movements….the best….absolutely nothing like it!

This obviously won’t help you but we actually took one of our baby moons in San Diego!! Lol
It was a great trip though!! 🙂

  36. Sam on April 14, 2015 at 10:43 am

I think the baby looks like a boy, but that’s a completely uneducated guess. Also, please don’t let your possibly future-little girl be offended by the fact that I thought she looked like a boy when she was the size of a bean : )

I hope I’m as adorable as you when I have a baby one day! You look great. It sure does pay to live and eat healthfully doesn’t it?! I’m looking forward to that time period (pregnancy) in my life, too.

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2015 at 2:51 pm

haha i’m sure the baby won’t be offended if it turns out it’s a girl 🙂
thank you so much- means a lot when you’re feeling good, but not like yourself, ya know? 🙂 xo

  37. Annette @ FitnessPerks on April 14, 2015 at 12:57 pm

I’m so excited for you to find out too! I agree, feeling the baby move inside of you is the BEST. <3

We are having another little girl and I am SO excited that L gets a sister close in age!!! <3

  38. Michelle on April 14, 2015 at 3:54 pm

    Great ultrasound picture!

I highly recommend Kauai, the Garden Island. They have several really nice kid-friendly beaches. We like to stay at the Waiohai, right next to Poipu Beach.

  39. Juli on April 14, 2015 at 6:20 pm

I second whoever said the Disney Resort on Oahu. I live in Hawaii and we take our 2 year old there to character brunch and swim in the lagoons.

Also, I’m due with my second Aug 28, and did some “angle of the dangle” research and that looks like girl! Can’t wait to hear<3

    • Juli on April 14, 2015 at 6:44 pm

Also- I most recently went to the Disney resort spa Aulani for the best prenatal massage ever. Totally recommend if you head this way.

  40. katelyn on April 15, 2015 at 6:22 am

Kind of random, but I was doing some research on random things that affect our kids here in Bangladesh and then I came across Kangaroo mother care (here’s the wiki): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kangaroo_care and a more reputable source: http://whqlibdoc.who.int/publications/2003/9241590351.pdf?ua=1

And apparently it can help with breastfeeding, but I’m not sure if it helps with milk production. Just I’d pass along this info!

  41. Tia on April 15, 2015 at 6:26 am

    Liv is just stunning!!

thank you! she is amazing <3

  42. Alex @ True Femme on April 18, 2015 at 3:22 pm

Maui (Wailea or Kaanapali) is literally my favorite place ever! I’ve traveled with my family (my parents and sister but we’re in our twenties) so it’s not the same as traveling with a husband and little one, but I know a lot of people who have! I think it has a lot of options no matter who you are traveling with. If you go, you should go to Roy’s and get the chocolate soufflé for dessert. It’s literally the most heavenly thing ever but you have to order it early in your meal so it has time to cook!
