Halfway through 2015 check-in

(and how those fitness goals are shaping up!)

Hi friends! How’s the morning going? Happy humpday!! Remember back in the day when Wednesday would equal Indian Food Wednesday? I’m bringing it back. After having the delicious Indian feast with Brittany last week, I haven’t been able to get it out of my mind! I think we’re needing some Sundara today….

It’s hard to believe that we’re halfway through the year! Like a vast majority of others, I like to take the beginning of a new year to reflect on what I accomplished, and changes I’d like to make moving forward. I create an inspiration board with visual reminders to work towards my goals each day, and also like to set fitness goals.

Since we’re halfway through the year, it’s an ideal time to check in and see how we’re doing for 2015.

From my 2014 recap + inspiration board post:

-Work on my patience. I think yoga teacher training has helped dramatically with this one, and the following goal. I’ve been practicing the law of detachment, which doesn’t mean I don’t care about things, it means that I try to see them as objectively as possible, and try not to let external factors personally affect me. I have a tendency to be “dangerously empathetic” (as quoted by my acupuncturist), to a point where I would let things really get into my heart and soul, and not always in the best way. With patience, I’ve learned that sometimes you need to slow down, wait, and let things happen as they will. As a control freak by nature, it’s been challenging, but really good for me.

-Work on compassion. YTT has also helped with this one, and while there’s always room for improvement, I’ve been more inspired to do something with compassion. You can’t create actions out of feelings.

-Work on being the best mom, wife, sister, friend I can be. This is my huge goal that will never feel like it’s accomplished, but gives me purpose each day.

-Explore going back to school. I’ve done quite a bit of research and talked to the Pilot, and if we get stationed in Tucson again, I’d like to do the accelerated MBA program at Eller (where I did my BSBA in Finance). If/when we get back to T-town, baby will be preschool-aged and since the program is only one year (an intense year, but a year!), I think it will be manageable.

-Finish my Women’s Fitness Specialist certification. Ehhhh. This was a good reminder. 🙂 I’m halfway through and really enjoying the course, I’ve just sucked at making time to actually finish it. Maybe after we’re into Summer Shape Up I can buckle down and get it done.

-Write my proposal for book concept #2. This one is on hold for a while with everything else I’m working on, in addition to growing a tiny human. I would love to write another book eventually, but in the meantime, I’m still working on getting the word out there about “HIIT It!” and other projects.

-Explore DVD #2. I was thinking about this one, and decided I definitely want to film a full Barre Blast class. It will probably be via Digital Download, and very inexpensive but enough to cover the costs to hire that one awesome video guy.

-Improve my photography skills. This is something I’m always working on, and still would like to enroll in a photography class.

-Wrap up another huge project that’s in the works (sorry I have to be lame-vague right now, but I promise it will be worth the wait!). This is where any extra time has been going, and a huge reason why I don’t watch a ton of TV. I’ve been cranking away to create something (hopefully?) awesome, and can’t wait to share it this fall.

-Meditate more often, or just enjoy a bit of silence each day. YTT to the rescue again. Right away, we were encouraged to start a meditation practice, and it’s something that’s been easy for me to continue throughout our training. Even 5 minutes a day makes a huge difference. If you guys would like, I’d be happy to put together some meditations to share!

-Reduce stress and anxiety. While I don’t think I’ve been able to *reduce* these things, I think that I’ve found ways to manage them. I’ve found that getting a good night’s sleep, reducing caffeine (right now I’ll do one cup of half-caf, max), getting in movement each day, and talking to others helps a ton.

-Prioritize sleep. We haven’t been fantastic at this one, but it’s something we’re going to start working on again. Since Liv has been going to bed so late -we’re going through some major bedtime battles over here haha- we both want to stay up and enjoy some quiet time after she’s snoozing. Hopefully once we can get her down at a reasonable hour again we’ll be able to go to bed early ourselves.

So, tell me friends: how are your goals for 2015 going? Have you crushed any of the fitness, health, personal or career goals you’ve set?? Was there something that was important to you at the time, and the priority has shifted?

Excited to read these. 🙂 See ya later today with the latest Stitch Fix!

  1. 2015 has been good to me so far. I found out I get accepted to school in September and I got to go on vacation for the first time in three years!

  2. I definitely have to sit down and write down some goals. I started in April with wanting to work on growing my blog into a business, but I really need to make a more long term goal list so that I have milestones I can reach along the way. I also got certified as a CPT so I need to figure out what direction I want that to go in as well.

  3. Kelsey Halena says:

My 2015 goals are lacking a bit, but there are other areas that I didn’t really set goals for that I’m happy about at the same time, so it evens out, right?? 🙂

One of the goals I set was to do a half marathon, and I am registered for one in September, so that one is technically “on track” as of right now. I take my first OrangeTheory class tonight, and I’m excited for that to hopefully help with my running, but also fairly terrified I will walk out of there a puddle of defeated mush! Ha.

Other, less successful goals: read 1 book per month (moving steadily with more around 1 per quarter), be able to do 5 pull ups (I thought putting our pullup bar between the living room and kitchen would be motivation – turns out, food is my motivation to go to the kitchen), and learn to knit (this one I’m still holding out for, because it’s a fall/winter activity to me, so there’s still time).

Thanks for the halfway reminder! 🙂

  4. Jennifer says:

What a great post and reminder for me to meditate. I find I go through phases where I do it every day for a few mths and then rough night with the kiddos or company and then days turn into weeks, that turn into mths where I realize I haven’t been meditating. So the past few weeks I lay in bed and do deep breathing and affirmations to start my day. I find it makes a difference than just getting out of bed.

  5. Tiffany says:

we still have one more month until we’re halfway through the year (whew)! But you’re right it has flown!!

    • Thank you!!! I was going to say the same thing…

    • haha – I came to say the same exact thing! I’m actually shocked by the number of people I’ve heard the past few days saying that we’re halfway through the year now that we’re in June. That would be June 30th… lol

  6. Hi Gina! Yes, you’ve got a lot going on, but love to see all of your successes. This year I wanted to get an additional fitness certification, and I did that by becoming an Orangetheory Fitness coach, which I’m totally enjoying. It’s exposing me to a few new things every day! As far as other goals – cooking new things has been something I’ve been doing too. And I would LOVE to download a barre video by you!!! 🙂 Hope to see that one come to fruition!

  7. I ate Indian almost every week when I was preggers. It made the little guy do back flips!

Nice work on your goals. The only one I’ve really been working on is learning a new language. Portuguese is so hard!

  8. OH MY GOSH you just made me realize 2015 is close to being half over. What the heck. Love reading these goals! There are definitely a group of mine I need to work on, too!

  9. I can’t believe it’s already June. I am doing really awesome at some of my goals and then others have completely fallen off my radar. Thanks for the reminder!

  10. I feel so lame that I do not write down any goals:( I guess my one huge goal has been trying to have a second child – which has taken up A LOT of time and energy. I also want to get better at managing all my photos – this is an ongoing goal!

I am impressed with your successes girl, you blow me away with all your accomplishments at such a young age. The best part of it is seeing (i guess assuming) you enjoy it all!

  11. My 2015 goals are massively lacking as in…. I totally changed them for June through December for many reasons but mainly because I know that I made them FAR out of my reach to where I was going to be disappointed, no matter what. I re-evaluated and I definately am just doing month to month goals that are a lot more attainable.

I would love love LOVE meditation guides!

  12. I might’ve mentioned i before but since you are into into on vision boards, you might look at intuitive collage or soulful vision boards. They can be done anytime of year, only take 5-10’mins once you know the process, and allow you to listen to the desires of your heart. I took a workshop w SoulDust in WA at our studio and its revolutionized the way I see intuition.

  13. I cannot wait to find out what the big project is! I’m so excited for you, and way too nosey for my own good! ;p

  14. OMG!! That photo is too cute!!!

  15. Would you rather go to sleep late and wake up late, or go to sleep early and wake up early?

  16. I’ve heard five people in the last three days talk about how 2015 is half way over / that we’re half way through the year. I know this is nit-picky but it’s driving me bananas- the beginning of JULY is the halfway point, we’ve still got a whole month to go.

  17. I got into grad school and am pursuing my Masters and RD credentials – a dream of mine for years now! It also means moving to the West coast and away from ALL my family – so maybe my next goal will be finding my independence and a little bit of bravery I didn’t know I have :).

  18. Katie O says:

I’ve been doing great with some (fitness and engaging with my 1 and 3 year old boys is going well), not so great at others (patience, less screen time, and weight gain are not going so well). I really need to make more time to disconnect, do yoga, meditate and be more present! this check in is a great idea, like a reminder that ‘you had these goals!’ 😀

YTT is on my bucket list too, so I love hearing how it’s going, thanks for the updates! 😀

  19. I would love some meditation ideas! I try to just sit or lay down and close my eyes and try not to think of anything.. SO hard! 🙂

  20. Gina — I apologize in advance for the shameless plug! But, I noticed that you’re interested in your MBA and my “professional woman” kicked in!! I am actually the Director of an AACSB accredited MBA Program that offers an on-campus and 100% online option for students to complete the program, without any differentiation between the two degrees! (read: no one knows you pursued the degree online, if you choose to do so). Our program is super affordable and actually gives you the option to complete the entire program in one calendar year! Please feel free to email me if you’re AT ALL interested in learning more!

Thanks for keeping us all entertained with your fabulous blog!

  21. Lisa L. says:

I set a goal to train for a run a 5k. I did one at the end of January and figured that would be it. But…somehow I got hooked on running. I’m currently training for my first 10k! I went from a non-runner who hated the very idea of it to someone who actually LOVES it! Biggest surprise by far.

A goal I want to make more room for: reading. I love it, but sadly got out of the habit when my life switched to busy-working-mom mode. I know I have pockets of time where I can fit it in; I just need to reprioritize it!

  22. It’s good to check in! I need to go look through my goals and update them too!

  23. Janelle says:

Yes, please share your meditation tips!

  24. So far my I’ve definitely been meeting and exceeding my fitness goal

I’ve lost about 12 pounds since the beginning of the year, my total goal is to lose 20 total pounds. I am feeling A LOT better and lighter as Ive been eating healthier, cutting out the sugar and drinking more water.

It’s great to see your progress as well!

So, tell me friends: how are your goals for 2015 going? Have you crushed any of the fitness, health, personal or career goals you’ve set?? Was there something that was important to you at the time, and the priority has shifted?

  25. Yes to meditations, please!! I use the Stop Breathe and Think app which is perfect as it gives short, easy to do anywhere meditations. But I could always go for more!
I wrote out my goals in January, and this is a great reminder to go review them as I can’t remember what they all were…. I’m sure I’ve crushed a few, started a few and forgotten about others…lol.

  26. It would be GREAT if you could compile some meditations. I am always looking for inspiration!

  27. I think I mentioned this years back so sorry if you remembered it but something to ask Eller if you get serious– Many MBA programs are just the undergrad ‘business core’ classes renumbered. The MBA is designed to teach business skills to grads with non-business degrees. Since you have a business undergrad it might be not worth it, unless the MBA label really appeals to you. I got my BS in finance from ASU and they said MBA students often literally sit in the same courses as the 100-level business core undergrads even. So I got an alternate masters (from UofA online even) when that urge came, since I had no desire to relive the business core, just more expensively!

    Good luck!

  28. Cheers to you and your awesome goals! I really enjoy your blog. I would be really interested in some meditation tips or a blog post on how you meditate. Thanks!

  29. I’m going strong on my goal to run one race a month and I can tell its really helping me stay on track with my running throughout the year.

I’m all about the full length barre blast video, I would definitely buy!

  30. My major goal this year is YTT which is finally stating next weekend 🙂

I’m also always trying to be the best mom and wife… every day and always.

    Yes, please share some meditations!

I’m dying to hear about your big project! Good luck with it!

  31. I’m excited for DVD number 2, I love the digital download option! My goal is to look further in a nutrition certification and finally just get one 🙂 .

  32. Jessie R says:

I’m killing my goal to read 40 books this year, and I’m currently reading number 17! YAY. I’m consistently exercising 5-6 days a week with a semi-regular home yoga practice, and I’ve gotten on the food prep train – toot toot! I need to sit down and figure out what I want to accomplish by the end of 2015- YIKES, how is that just beyond the horizon, where does the time go!?

    • Jessie R says:

I took my first cycle class this year, and I just can’t stop! I love it… I keep considering getting certified, but I don’t know if or when I would teach… Working full time and all…

  33. I have been thinking about this too since June marks half way through the year if you can believe it! One huge goal was to get my personal training certification accomplished through the NSCA which I did. I have to go back and revisit my goals in detail like you did here in this post. Thanks for sharing!

  34. I’ve been setting a couple smaller goals each month so it is more manageable. Some of them are super small and super random (like try a new restaurant) and some of them lead to bigger things, like completing my Health and Wellness Coach certification!

  35. I ran my first race longer than a 5k! I ran in a 10 miler that is popular in my city. It showed me I can reach goals I thought were unattainable.

  36. justine mckenzie says:

Full Barre Blast class video for download!? YES PLEASE.

  37. Such a good idea to do a little check up mid-year. And I really admire that your goals seem to be focused on improvement and self-worth more so than tangible accomplishments. I certainly have nothing against setting measurable goals but a lot of the ones that I strive to get my value from can’t be measured outwardly and I have to remind myself of that. Thanks for a great post, as per usual.

  38. I’d love to hear some meditations! Always good to reduce stress 🙂

  39. I can’t believe we’re six months into 2015! So crazy! I have been using this year as a “happiness project” year, and this has pushed me to focus more on self-care and intentionality than in the past. This month, I am focusing on adventure and friendships. It’s been a lovely way to take care of myself while still holding myself accountable. I also have been wanting to meditate more, but have settled with doing “morning pages” and at least just taking some time to journal each day!

Thanks for sharing your goals! You have written them so beautifully and are truly an inspiration 🙂

I’m glad you are loving your YTT!!!!

  40. Fantastic goals! I really need to lay mine out like this…I feel a little all over the place right now and I do have some big stuff closing in quickly!

  41. Katherine says:

yes to meditations! I’ve been feeling in a meditation rut lately and always love to hear what’s helping others continue to deepen their meditation practice!

  42. love this mid-year check-in! I feel I really think about/ evaluate the beginning of the year and the end of the year and that’s where I do all my goal-setting. But mid-year check-ins are GREAT!!!

  43. I’m super excited for your big project 🙂 Can’t wait to hear about it! I’ve really crushed my fitness goal of being more well-rounded. In addition to 3-4 pure barre classes a week I’ve been doing 2-3 plyometric circuit training routines and I’m really proud of sticking with it! Plus the results have been pretty good! The biggest goal I’ve achieved though is getting into an Ivy League school for grad school. I totally don’t mean for that to sound arrogant, but it’s been a lifelong dream of mine and I worked really hard to get there. Hope you have a great day! 🙂

  44. I can’t believe we are already half way through the year! My goals have to be updated with the new addition to our family : )

  45. I would love if u did some meditations. My massage/Reiki therapist suggested I start but I def need guidance! TIA!
