August 2015 Workout Playlist

Hi friends! How’s the morning going? Lately, I’ve had the worst time getting moving in the morning which I think is could be due to the third trimester slump. Caffeine, I miss you!

Yesterday was a lot of fun and packed with activities. I joked about getting lost in the IKEA maze, and we really did get lost in the IKEA maze. You have to literally go through the entire store to get out, and all of the elevators are hidden. Sneaky, IKEA.

I got a couple of things for the baby’s room/guest room because the Pilot and I realized that we’re giant slackers and should start getting things together. It was so much fun to take our baby stuff out of storage and start cleaning everything! I have plans to do a mermaid room, so we’ll see how it turns out. It’s a smaller space, but I’m excited to decorate it a bit for the little lady. <3

The mess that is the guest bed right now:

Halp me 1 of 1

(If I disappear from the world, please unearth me from the mountain of tiny jammies. Also, if you know of a spot where I can sell a bunch of cloth diapers, please let me know!)

Dinner last night was a quick one that I’ll be sharing later this afternoon: turkey and shrimp jambalaya!

Shrimp and turkey jambalaya 1 of 1

It’s a barre day over here and I have a chiropractor appointment this morning. Between chiropractic care, acupuncture, strengthening my legs and glutes, and wearing my support belt, a majority of my hip flexor and round ligament pain has disappeared. For a while, I could only walk a couple of minutes on the treadmill before I would cramp up (at 2.5-3.0mph), and after seeking help and wearing my belt, I was able to comfortably walk for 30 minutes at 3.2mph on Sunday! It’s still much slower than my *usual* walking place (and running is just out of the question right now), but still felt like a huge accomplishment.

I even got to bust out a new playlist! When I was at IDEA, I attended Jeffrey Scott’s “Pimp My Playlist” session. I attended the session last year, but after talking to him during our Spin cert, he assured me that he had an entirely new playlist + tips and tricks to share. Of course I had to go. He has an infectious enthusiasm and I really enjoy his presentation style. As promised, he gave us a solid new playlist + lots of ideas on how to make an awesome and motivating mix for class.

Some of his tips, which are helpful if you’re a fellow instructor or just want to make a bomb playlist for your own workouts:

1) Define it. What are you using this playlist for? Make sure it’s appropriate and the right type of music to pump you (or the class) up! Timing is important. For example, a 9:15am crowd of mostly moms is going to enjoy different types of music (top 40 and throwback tunes) than a 6:30pm after-work crowd (when more rock/edgy music is appropriate). One of my favorite instructors always asks the class to email him song requests. This is a perfect way to get an idea of your crow and what types of music they enjoy.

2) Surprise and delight! Throw in a song that EVERYONE knows, but maybe a unique remix of the song (so you don’t immediately know what it is).

3) Use some online tools. He recommended:

iTunes: go to top singles and start at the BOTTOM of the list so you’re not playing all overplayed stuff. Search for a song you like and add “remix,” “dance,” “cycling,” “mashup,” “workout,” “techno” or “dubstep” in the search bar with the song title

Spotify: follow instructors or friends to get new song ideas (I love following Julz Arney, Amy Dixon, Lacey Stone and Greg Cook)

SoundCloud.com —> amazing remixes of popular songs you can download

Workout music: Dynamix, Yes!, Power Music and Club 32 Mix create remixes of Top 40 songs

ClickMix.com: you can mix your song within the website and also change the beats per minute

4) Shazam FTW. You never know when you’re going to hear a song you love and wonder what it is. He joked that he’s often walking around Whole Foods with his phone in the air. I personally adore Shazam and frequently use it to discover new songs. Some of my favorite Zumba tunes were Shazam-ed in a Mexican restaurant.

5) Music mapping. Create a journey and a purpose with your playlist. Pay attention to the song order and contrast between the songs -try to avoid similar-sounding songs or artists consecutively- and see if the lyrics in the song can help with your coaching. (It’s cheesy, but it works.) I also like songs with a motivational message within my own workouts. “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson never lets me down haha.

Here’s a new playlist I created, using some of his songs and suggestions + some of my current favorites:

Hope you find some new playlist loves!!

Have a wonderful morning <3

*I’ll create a cardio workout to go with this playlist and post it this week! <3

Something to do: this arm burner! It’s a quick one that will have your upper body on fiiiire.

So true about Shazam! I’m always reading with the phone when I hear a great song. I swear that is my favorite app. I remember back in the day before cell phones I used to hear a song and have no clue who sang it. It would make me crazy for days. Good luck with the organizing! It actually sounds really fun.

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:25 pm

yes, it’s definitely the fun type of chore 🙂

Music is so powerful when you’re working out! Especially for intense classes or Zumba. I love songs that make me want to dance. I don’t think I’ve heard the song “Booty Swing” yet but something tells me I need that in my life. hah!

  7. Kate on August 4, 2015 at 8:37 am

I’d love to chat with you about buying your CD depending on what kind they are and condition!

  8. Jacquelyn @justjacq on August 4, 2015 at 8:47 am

I see you have Odenall Pi on your list. I love! I have it on a playlist I call beats which is mostly non-vocal songs with awesome… beats haha. You might like this song I heard on So You Think You Can Dance last night: Beautiful Friends by Helen Money. Thanks for the playlist! I created it in Spotify except for the Gary Brown song because it isn’t available there 🙁

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:22 pm

i will check it out now!! thank you!

I love going to IKEA, I could spend hours and hours in that store. Your guest room looks like mine & I have no idea why mine looks like that, I don’t use it. It’s full of winter clothes though. I guess there is no need to put them away only to dig them out in a couple months. I’m loving Barre right now, It relaxes me and I feel great from all the stretching.

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:21 pm

barre feels so great to me right now, too! i think when you don’t use a room, it’s easy to let stuff pile up in there. our “office” in valdosta was totally filled with random boxes

  11. Stacy on August 4, 2015 at 9:12 am

    Look at all those jammies!
Gonna try that playlist! I need to mix mine up!

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:18 pm

      hope you love it!!

  12. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on August 4, 2015 at 9:23 am

So many songs I need to check out. Thanks for sharing!

  13. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on August 4, 2015 at 9:43 am

Hmmm. I’ve been getting adjusted by the chiro regularly and actually just got a PT prescription for my back issues. I haven’t tried acupuncture yet though… have you ever done an in depth post about this before?

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:18 pm

no because i don’t think i’m knowledgeable enough about the subject. maybe i could find a licensed acupuncturist to write a guest post. some people respond really well to acupuncture, while others don’t. for me, i’ve always had a strong response to it and find that it really helps

  14. mary on August 4, 2015 at 10:09 am

I use Siri all the time to identify songs. Just hold your iphone button down til the beep then ask “what song is this?”

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:17 pm

this is a great idea, except i think siri thinks i speak a different language (or i don’t speak clearly haha). she’s like, “i didn’t get that, gina.” “there seems to be a problem.”

  15. Maria on August 4, 2015 at 10:30 am

I just started washing all the tiny clothes we are going to reuse. I love the smell of freshly cleaned baby laundry 🙂 As far as selling cloth diapers, I would look on facebook. Where I live, there’s a neighborhood rummage group. People sell kids stuff on there all the time. Maybe your city has something like that? I’ve always had good luck selling & buying stuff.

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:15 pm

it’s so much fun!!! that’s a great idea, too. thank you!

  16. SJ on August 4, 2015 at 10:32 am

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:15 pm

      the worst haha

I love these ideas for the playlists. I usually will do a few themed playlists (see below), I tell my clients to send me song requests about once a month. I like the idea of adding remix or other words to get diff versions of a song! The other thing I usually do is go to what’s trending in diff countries (spotify) and pick songs that aren’t in English…it’s nice to change it up. I couldn’t find you on spotify but I’m “chyna5181” if you want to follow or steal a few songs/playlists!

Miami Theme – all songs about Miami, Cuba, Pitbull, Gloria E…etc
Cross Country – songs/artists who talk about/rep each part of the USA (party in USA, California love, East/West Coast, Dirty South etc)
Colors – Purple rain, Black & Yellow, Black & White, Gold Digger, etc
Narcissitic – Songs all about you/feeling yourself (Flawless, Feelin Myself by Miley, I’m the Ish by DJ Class, Worth It 5th Harmony, Sexy & I know it LMFAO…etc)

    So many great ideas…!

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:15 pm

ahhh i love those theme ideas!!

Oh man am I glad you posted your treadmill walking speed. I’ve been feeling suuuuper slow walking since I used to run pre-pregnancy. Glad to hear I’m not the only slow preggo on the treadmill! 😉

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:14 pm

you are not alone 🙂 my “warm up” walking speed is now my “fast” speed 🙂

  19. whitney on August 4, 2015 at 12:24 pm

There’s a local cloth diaper group on FB where you could list your diapers: San Diego cloth diaper BST, San Diego Cloth Diaper Mamas. Or, you could go to the trusty list from Craig 🙂 Along with the other ladies, I’d be interested to see what you have 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:13 pm

      awesome- thank you!!

Walking around Ikea, esp when it’s busy, gives me anxiety!

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:13 pm

omg i love it. something about watching shopping insanity is so funny to me. this is why i love black friday 🙂

  21. leeann on August 4, 2015 at 12:37 pm

We just got an Ikea in Colorado a couple of years ago. I LOVE it…but it is quite a drive (Wednesday, when it opens, only please-otherwise too crazy!). Of course I went (with my 2 year old-oh boy) and then 2 days later got the catalog! Such a fail…now I want to go back 😉

    • Fitnessista on August 4, 2015 at 2:12 pm

ahhhh! love walking around there… even though i always get lost 😉

  22. Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me on August 4, 2015 at 2:30 pm

Hope you start to feel a bit more energized soon enough! I love the tip about throwing in a song everyone knows! I have only taken a handful of group fitness classes, but every time a song I know really well comes on, it always gives me a new burst of energy!

  23. Casey on August 4, 2015 at 2:40 pm

    Hi Gina,
I have been a long time reader of yours and live in San Diego, I read that you are wanting to sell your cloth diapers and I am 16 weeks pregnant with my first and am looking for cloth diapers, so I would LOVE to get them from YOU! 😉 Would you please email me, then I will get you my number (or you can provide yours, what ever works best for you!) and we can figure it out?! I would email you directly, but don’t have a direct email for you. Thank you so much!
    Casey

  24. Lesley on August 4, 2015 at 4:08 pm

I once made the mistake of going to Ikea before eating breakfast. It’s a miracle any of us made it out of the store alive that day. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your workout playlists – I need to update my songs for some new motivation!

  25. Lindsay on August 4, 2015 at 4:38 pm

I love getting lost in the ikea maze! 🙂

quick question: do your “something to do” ideas compliment your monthly workout calendars? I love the monthly calendars, but I always find myself wanting to the extra ideas you post, and I’m not sure if they mix well or if it would be too much…

  26. Mackenzie on August 4, 2015 at 5:16 pm

I’m loving your playlist! I’m definitely going to steal a few of your songs tomorrow during my HIIT circuit workout tomorrow morning 🙂

  27. Kate @KateMovingForward on August 5, 2015 at 12:25 pm

So fun! I really like Uma Thurman right now–I didn’t at first but then it’s completely grown on me and won me over! 😀
