random wednesday

Hi friends! How’s the day going? I’m glad you liked the musical strength workout. Let me know if you give it a whirl!

It has been a fun week over here. Livi started swim lessons again so that the weather is warmer (she LOVES it), I’m still taking Miss P to her baby music class, and we’ve been able to spend time with friends in addition to cranking along at Liv’s room.

New bed is set up; just have to get the furniture arranged, the art on the walls, and the bedding washed and ready.

Bed w base

(Bed with the base, before the mattress was set up!)

She’s been camping on her old mattress in our room, which has been super sweet. I like having her in there, but I think she’ll love her new set up.

Sisters 2

(These two. It’s even more amazing than I imagined.)

Meal prep was a little hit or miss this week, but we’ve had some turkey meatballs:

Turkey meatballs

(when your giant wine glass is as big as your pasta bowl haha)

honey dijon salmon with veggies,

and last night, we ordered OB Noodle House to-go.

Ob noodle

OB Noodle House is definitely on the long list of places we’ll miss in San Diego.

Let’s just get random:

This is still one of my favorite snacks:

Yogurt protein bowl

Goat’s milk greek yogurt, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, fresh chopped berries, peanut butter, cinnamon. It has about 30g of protein and tastes amazing. I’ve been sprinkling the Flavor God chocolate donut seasoning on top, too. That snacks reminds me of the blog days where all of my posts were like this one. 🙂

P and I made it through our first full Target trip without a spit-up extravaganza. This is HUGE. I finally feel like we’re in the point of her reflux that we can venture out of the house more easily without 3 outfit changes in the process. Even though it’s certainly more convenient, the very best part is that she’s feeling so much better.

I’m writing a hair faves post, and was wondering if anyone has tried the “no poo” or apple cider vinegar in their hair. I’ve read it works, but I’m scared to try anything new since my hair is so thick and unruly right now.

Moscow mules are a pretty great way to end an evening.

Mules

Tell me something random about your Wednesday. 🙂

Hope you have a lovely night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo

I did try the ACV in my hair before and it was TERRIBLE! I didn’t quite understand how to get it in my hair without pouring it over my head, so I ended up inhaling more than I actually “washed” with, haha. Also: “My hair is so thick and unruly right now…” <– classy problem for us fine-haired folks 😉

  2. Amber on April 13, 2016 at 3:17 pm

    Hi Gina!

I put ACV in my hair about every other week. I have really thick hair and it really helps when I feel like I have “extra gunk” in my hair from hair spray, shampoo, etc. I simply put in about 2 tablespoons, wash it out and then do my normal shampoo, conditioner, rinse. When I dry my hair it feels so clean and fresh! It smells a bit like ACV when I get out of the shower but once i put product on it and blow dry it there is no smell. Good Luck!!!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:35 pm

oh that’s a great idea! maybe i’ll use it occasionally to get rid of build up

  3. Leah on April 13, 2016 at 3:18 pm

Would love a hair fav post. I loved your curling iron video from years back! Random fact :). I think I want a new curling rod that’s a bit wider. I’ve never tried no poo. Does it work with colored hair?
    Love the food pics! Yum!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:34 pm

i have no idea- i was wondering that too!

  4. Pam on April 13, 2016 at 3:28 pm

I use the vinegar method! I originally used ACV but my hair smelled like wet dog/ garbage all the time. No good! I switched to regular white vinegar and it works just as well! Much cheaper too. My routine is that I take a scoop of baking soda and scrub it into my wet scalp in the shower. I rinse it out, then put a solution of half vinegar half water in my hair. Comb through, rinse and I’m good to go! You can use whatever styling products you like after. I bought one of those plastic ketchup dispensers with the tip for the vinegar solution so I wasn’t just pouring it all over randomly. Give it a try- I’ve been loyal for three years now!

    • melodie on April 13, 2016 at 6:25 pm

I tried this method for a few months. My hair texture changed a bit that i was not used to. The ends felt a little more brittle maybe?? And it was squeaky clean. Literally squeaky. Ha. And i had a huge static problem the entire time. On the upside i do feel like i got alot of hair growth (in length) during that time because i was “washing” so infrequently. I was trying this specifically for more root volume and body and unfortunately this method did NOT provide those things for me. Instead my hair seemed pretty lifeless. But sometimes i am interested in giving it another go.

      • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:31 pm

that’s what i’m afraid of. my hair is already dry and can get crispy at the ends, so i’m worried this will worsen it

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:34 pm

      wow, that is amazing!

      • Pam on April 14, 2016 at 6:48 am

I find the vinegar makes my hair softer, and the baking soda makes it more crunchy. So maybe your ratio was a bit off for your hair type? I have fine hair that’s a bit dry, and I find the 50/50 vinegar and water solution perfect. I also don’t use a ton of baking soda, and I mostly put it on my roots. If you want more conditioning I would use more vinegar, and vice versa, and not use too much baking soda. Hope that helps!

    • zoe on April 18, 2016 at 10:23 am

try it with a spritz bottle- then you’ve got my method. i LOVE no-poo and won’t go back! i love the scrubby sensation of baking soda these days and it’s so cheap.

  5. Renae L. on April 13, 2016 at 3:49 pm

I tried the Baking Soda and Water as “Shampoo” and ACV as “Conditioner.” It was… not for me. I found the baking soda left too much residue (which I thought was weird) and still had greasy hair. And my curly hair was not happy with the ACV. I currently use a Deva Curl No Poo as my shampoo and slowly built up to washing my hair once a week. I like to use a clarifying shampoo every couple weeks as there is a little build-up. I’ve been doing the No Poo for a couple years and probably won’t go back to regular shampoo!

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:34 pm

      wow, that’s good to know!!

  6. Juliana on April 13, 2016 at 3:51 pm

I experimented with using ACV and a baking soda solution for a while a long time ago. It worked when my hair was really short, but when i grew it out (like longer than jaw length) it was really greasy and gross. (Plus it made my natural blonde color look all dingy and blah.) Some people love it though so I’d say it’s worth a try! Everyone’s hair is different 🙂

When do you find out about your move?

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:34 pm

we found out (unofficially, so i can’t really spread the word yet). i’m letting it marinate for a bit haha. (still in denial)

      • Juliana on April 14, 2016 at 8:12 am

Uh oh! Haha. Can’t wait to hear the news! Wherever it is, I know you’ll have a great time. I mean, even Lemoore has a wine bar 😉 I wish you were staying in San Diego– I would love to be able to take one of your classes when I am back from my injury. Will you go back to teaching before you leave?

  7. Kristen on April 13, 2016 at 4:20 pm

I would love a post about hair products! I’m always on the lookout for new ones to try out.
I have finally worked my way to one hair wash a week, sometimes two depending on what I’ve done that week. At first my hair was oily and dry shampoo was my best friend. Now the oils have adjusted and I only use dry shampoo the last couple of days of the week. My hair seems so much healthier now than when I was washing it multiple times a week, and it’s also easier to style now because it’s “dirty”.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:33 pm

totally agree! also, when i curl mine the day after washing it, it lasts so much longer

  8. Julia on April 13, 2016 at 5:38 pm

Gina, the baking powder thing is said to cause breakage. And when I tried it, I looked like I had dandruff all the time! I have very fine hair, but tons of it so I get the thick and unruly. I still have yet to find what really works for my hair and doesn’t cost a fortune. Plus, now that I’m working out 3-4 times a week I have to wash way more.

I wonder if the co-wash branded stuff would be best? All this to say – Yes. Hair post good.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:33 pm

AHHHH. i don’t think i’m going to try it haha

    • zoe on April 18, 2016 at 10:24 am

Where did you hear it’s caused breakage? i have less breakage tehse days using no-poo

  9. Crystal on April 13, 2016 at 5:49 pm

I’ve done the no poo method and loved it…but my husband didn’t like the smell of vinegar in my hair so I switched back to reg shampoo/conditioner.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:32 pm

interesting- i was wondering if it was a bit stinky

  10. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on April 13, 2016 at 5:51 pm

I’ve never tried the ACV method, but I only wash my hair every 5 days or so. Since it’s so thick and long, it takes a while for it really to get greasy and I usually wear it in a braid or something twisty towards the end when it starts looking iffy.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:32 pm

same! that’s when the high bun or a braid will make an appearance 😉

  11. Chelsea Anthony on April 13, 2016 at 5:55 pm

I tried the apple cider vinegar and it was gross. The vinegar was fine, I use it for a lot of different things. However, right now I wash my hair every other day, using dry shampoo on the non wash days. I wanted to see if this apple cider vinegar rinse worked on top of that with adding an extra no shampoo day. So it would go shampoo (day 1), dry shampoo (day 2), vinegar rinse (day 3)… Repeat. It was gross. When I got to the vinegar day I got my hair wet, poured the vinegar on, rinsed it out and when I started to blow dry my hair it felt gross and smelled like unwashed greasy hair. It was almost like the vinegar didn’t wash the oil build up out, but instead spread it through my hair. I will never do it again and will just stick with the dry shampoo.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:32 pm

also, i don’t really want to smell like vinegar haha

      • Christine Daffan on April 14, 2016 at 5:42 pm

I tried it for a bit and didn’t love it either. The worst part was that I would go to the gym at work and when I would swear I could smell the vinegar! If my hair was dry it was fine, but once I started sweating you could smell it. Bleh.

Something random: Reading and taking notes for a doctoral class while breastfeeding is surprisingly easier than one would think. 😉

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:32 pm

      you are a queen multitasker

  13. Kate on April 13, 2016 at 6:06 pm

My ability to go without shampoo waivers, and I have friends whose experience with it has been totally hit or miss, but I only use shampoo twice a week and it’s I don’t even have dry shampoo and don’t find I need it. The days when I wash it, I feel like it’s so much shinier and bouncy than when I washing it every day

    • Kate on April 13, 2016 at 6:09 pm

Of note, I work out 5 days a week and get super sweaty. Also, COCONUT OIL. I feel like you’ve mentioned this, but sleeping or leaving coconut oil in your hair for an hour or two and wrapping it in plastic wrap does absolute wonders. Highly recommend

      • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:31 pm

YES. coconut oil is amazing <3

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:32 pm

same! i my hair is much happier when i wash it less

  14. Giana on April 13, 2016 at 6:42 pm

    Hey Gina!
I cannot seem to find Goat’s milk greek yogurt, only goat milk yogurt?! What specific brand and stores do you find yours at??! I must make that creation with my goat yogurt ASAP!!
    Thanks,
    Giana

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:30 pm

the brand is capretta and i’ve only found it at whole foods. it is AMAZING, and i love the texture + higher protein content

      • Giana on April 14, 2016 at 3:05 am

Thank you! I have never seen in at
Any of the WF in Illinois, but maybe I can request!

I got my hair coloured and cut today. Blondish hair and long bob for the win!
Also: no poo = poo poo hair for me. My hair is just too fine, it needs shampoo. I only wash my hair every other day at most.

    • Fitnessista on April 13, 2016 at 10:30 pm

haha! that cracked me up. jealous of your fresh hair! i need to get mine done in a serious way

  16. Maddie on April 14, 2016 at 12:21 am

I tried baking soda and acv. That didn’t work for me but now I don’t use any shampoo just conditioner to “wash” my hair – as per the curly girl method. I have slightly wavy hair and it works wonders. My hair is the best it’s ever been. I’m growing my colour out but this method also worked for me when I had coloured hair 🙂

  17. Meagan Leanne on April 14, 2016 at 4:51 am

I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with my hair for like the last 2 years… My ends are a bit dried up and damaged so I try to trim off an ugly end whenever I see one to hopefully help with the problem. Other wise, I try to only wash my hair twice a week. Maybe 3 times at most if I went swimming on an unfortunate day. Sometimes when I have patience or my hair really, really needs it, I do 2-3 coats of my conditioner which actually really helps. I guess it picks up more softening stuff each time. Using a leave in conditioner is a must for me. It’s a 10 is a great one.

  18. Anne on April 14, 2016 at 5:23 am

I am SO EXCITED you are going to do a hair post! Your hair always looks on point – I am super jealous of it 🙂 Can’t wait to hear about your favs!

  19. Chrissy on April 14, 2016 at 6:03 am

I do white vinegar on my hair – it actually made my hair a little greasy at first when I was pouring it in my hands and rubbing it all over. So I put it in a spray bottle and just spray the lower half. I love it and think my hair looks so much better than it did before. The smell goes away in minutes, too.

Random part of my Wednesday, it’s late but it happened:) I get home from work, my husband and I say hi to each other—neither of us seem very interested in conversation or interaction of any sort. I run a quick errand, come home and he had good news about our upcoming vacation. I went from wondering what is going on…..back to I’m so happy to be with him—it was weird but then so good!

  24. sam @ Barrister's Beet on April 14, 2016 at 6:33 pm

Those turkey meatballs look delish! Did you use zucchini noodles? I would love to hear an update on whether you’re following your eating program despite not being able to work out right now. Your eats look great!

    • Fitnessista on April 15, 2016 at 12:18 pm

i use a mix of gf noodles and zucchini noodles when i have pasta.
i’m very loosely following the plan. it’s hard because i’m not working out and am not as hungry, but still trying to get lots of protein. one major change: i’m having wine again every night haha. YOLO
      xoxo

  25. Sam on April 15, 2016 at 2:45 pm

Can I ask what protein powder you use?
