from sixty to zero

Hey hey hey! How was the weekend? Hope you had a great one. New post up on the PBB site here! Huge congrats to the winners of our Wild Friends Friday Faves giveaway: Lauren S. and Melissa. Both of the lucky ladies have been emailed! Stay tuned for more giveaways coming up, plus the usual Summer Shape Up and Blogiversary giveaways. Mark your calendars for July 11 for the Summer Shape Up party; it’s going to be a good one.

Our weekend started off at full speed, and the slowed wayyy down into pure relaxation/resting mode. Friday, our adventure was Belmont Park per Liv’s request. I told her that I wouldn’t be able to ride everything with her since P is too little, and she was like, “I want to go by myself.”

She giggled the entire time. She rode all of the kids’ rides, we shared a soft pretzel, and then headed home to hang out for the evening.

Friday night ended up being one of those on-the-fly recipes that turned out really well. I’ll share all of the details in this afternoon’s post, because it was so easy, and so so good.

Saturday morning, we went on a donut hunt. We were all wanting donuts (THE PILOT DID THIS TO ME! haha), and googled for the best spot. Apparently Donut Bar downtown is THE PLACE. Every knows it, too, because when we drove up and the line went down the street (maybe 75-100 people in line), we said “forget it” and headed to choice #2: Nomad Donuts.

Nomad Donuts is a cute little spot with an amazing selection of regular baked and vegan donuts, in addition to coffee drinks. It was also busy, but nowhere near the insanity of Donut Bar. (The plan for Donut Bar: go back during an “off” time <— not a Saturday mid morning.)

Anyway, Nomad did not disappoint.

Liv and I picked a selection of regular and vegan donuts, plus some donut holes for the road. 😉 They were all good, but the vegan peanut butter with strawberry jam stole the show.

This is my chocolate lavender donut, and it was everything.

(Skirt is here from my RTR Unlimted Subscription <— referral link and you get $30 to spend. Just saw that to buy it it’s on sale right now and I really like it so…..)

I also have to show you P’s morning ponytail. I can’t believe how much hair this little lady has! Usually babies’ hair will fall out -at least it did when I was a baby and also for Liv- but nope, P still has all of hers. It is amazing.

Saturday afternoon, Liv came down with a fever, and the Pilot also got struck by the funk. We used to have good immune systems, but then they disappeared? I don’t even know. We’ve been sick more times in the past few years than our entire marriage. P and I are still fighting the good fight on this one (fingers crossed). Saturday night consisted of Rancho’s takeout (I had turkey chorizo with eggs and beans), and Zootopia on the couch with the fam.

We just laid low around here yesterday, taking care of Liv, playing with P, and getting chores done. With how much the Pilot traveled last month, it felt nice to have a relaxing *normal* weekend. I also taught a Zumba class (“Cheap Thrills” in my latest face) and a barre class.

What was the highlight of your weekend? Any fun plans or fitness events? What’s your city’s most popular dessert or foodie spot? I’m surprised how many hyped-up places there are in San Diego. So many spots with long lines, and all of the ones we have tried have been worth the wait.

Happy Monday! See ya later today with that recipe.

xoxo

Omg, I too have been wanting to try Donut Bar and have not for the same reason. I heard you can call your order in ahead and you don’t have to wait in line, but I’m not sure all the deets on that. Please post a full review when you do go.

Sometimes it’s nice to have a chill-ax weekend! Hopefully everyone is feeling better soon and you and P don’t get sick!

  4. Caroline M. on June 13, 2016 at 8:25 am

Those donuts look awesome! I had a surprise cinnamon sugar donut last night and it was amazing. I’m always so impressed with how you take your girls out for fun activities even without other adult backup. I know they’ll look back on it and appreciate it!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 10:00 am

      that sounds wonderful!
yeah, we all like to be out and about and i love our time with the 3 of us girls. 🙂 the good news is that p is happy in the ergo, so i feel like we can go pretty much anywhere.

    Mmmmm chocolate lavender donut!

I filmed a yoga video on Saturday morning for clients…the weather was gorgeous and it was super fun too, totally made me a bit stiff on the car ride home! I didn’t get to go out to enjoy resto food because my parents made a huge BBQ this weekend but it was so fun and beautiful regardless…I think next weekend I will be tackling the food scene a bit in my city with the hubs!

    xo

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 9:59 am

that is amazing! do you use a mic when you film? i’m looking for one…
hope you have a great week!

      • Sara @ saralouyoga on June 13, 2016 at 10:05 am

I’m looking for one too! I currently love doing the voice over with a condenser mic at home but am looking to invest in a lavalier mic and system so that I can speak directly to the ladies who are watching…let me know if you find a good one! xo

        • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:07 pm

i definitely will! i’ve been scoping them out for a while now. i can film in my house without one, but would love to do some beach or outdoor workouts.

Those donuts look amazing! There’s a great donut place here in downtown Calgary called Jelly Modern. Whenever I’m nearby I end up picking up a few because my dad loves them.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 9:59 am

      i love the name!

  7. Molly on June 13, 2016 at 9:22 am

    Hi Gina,
What do you think about counting macros? I’m refining my workout/eating plan to look great in my wedding dress. My friend does 40% protein 40 carbs and 20 fat. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 9:59 am

      hi molly!
i think macro counting can work if you have a goal you’re going after, but that it’s not really sustainable for life. the cab count sounds low to me. i like 40-30-30 and 50-30-20 depending on how active you are, body comps, your strength training plan and goals
      xoxo

      • Molly on June 13, 2016 at 10:00 am

Thanks! I eat more fat than 20% so I was trying to think if it would be a good plan or not

        • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:08 pm

yeah if you naturally prefer to eat more fat than that (and they’re healthy fats) i would stick with the higher amounts. fat is so important

  8. Amy on June 13, 2016 at 9:47 am

Native San Diegan here and I highly recommend VG’s donuts in Cardiff!! I don’t think Donut Bar is worth the wait – their donuts are pretty big so the frosting to donut ratio is off. But if you go on a weekday, you can park at Horton Plaza and walk over and there isn’t usually a line.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 9:58 am

that is good to know! also, i appreciate the note about the frosting ratio. i want equal frosting to dough haha.
we will definitely check out VG’s!

      • Jessie on June 13, 2016 at 10:04 am

Yes, VG donuts for sure!! It’s in Solana/ Encinitas;) I grew up in SD but moved 2 yrs ago. I’m going to visit next week and can’t wait to eat all the great food. SD has great food! I’m going to eat at pizza port and old town too of course Have a great day!

        • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:08 pm

yes, SD has THE BEST FOOD. yay, pizza port!! i’ve been craving old town lately, too 😉

  9. RachelG on June 13, 2016 at 10:09 am

Definite highlight of the weekend was having Sophie (5 1/2 months old) visit with her Great Great Aunt (99 1/2 years old), and when my cousin’s daughter kept calling her “Baby Sophie”. My hormones! lol.

I’m loving Liv’s go big or go home face on that ride! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:07 pm

      that is beyond amazing.

  10. Taylor on June 13, 2016 at 10:14 am

Those donuts look amazing!! Highlight of my weekend was celebrating my sister’s birthday with a yummy dinner at a favorite restaurant of ours and grabbing some drinks with some friends!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:07 pm

      that sounds like a blast!

  11. Laura H on June 13, 2016 at 10:31 am

I feel you on the immune system timeout. My hubby, 3 year old, and I were all sick with a variety of fun germs for the last 2 months, it was awful. Hope you guys are feeling better!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:07 pm

ugh, it’s no fun. i’m like “when will be all stop getting sick?” but then i remember that my brothers and i all had colds and viruses throughout all of elementary school and middle school…

  12. s on June 13, 2016 at 10:57 am

those donuts look amazing & i love “cheap thrills”! perfect workout music

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:06 pm

same! it’s one of my favorite workout songs right now

  13. Liz on June 13, 2016 at 11:16 am

The highlight of my weekend was hiking a new trail with my husband and starting the TV show The Leftovers (I am now obsessed).

But all of that was overshadowed for me yesterday with what happened in Orlando. I find myself deeply saddened today and reflecting on the world we live in and finding it lacking in this particular moment.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:06 pm

i haven’t heard of that show! i’ll have to check it out.
and yes, the news yesterday made me sick. i lived there for a little while, and still have friends in the area. it breaks my heart that these things happen, and that they’re so prevalent in the US.

  14. Julia @ Drops of Jules on June 13, 2016 at 11:37 am

I have the worst of luck when it comes to giveaways. Keeping my fingers crossed as always 🙂 That first picture of Liv is the greatest! She looks like she is having a ball. Sorry there is sickness brewing in the household but I hope all is restored quickly!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:05 pm

      she has so much fun!!
hope you had a great weekend, too!

  15. Robin R on June 13, 2016 at 11:40 am

The “funk” is a direct result of living with 2 little germ magnets. We have 1.5 & 7.5 yr old magnets ourselves. We cannot seem to get rid of runny noses or congestion AT ALL. “Fortunately” its hitting hubby & me more than the kiddos right now. Ugh.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 12:05 pm

haha it’s the worst when you’re HAPPY that you’re the sick one. i totally feel ya, and hope you feel better soon! you’re right though. the germ magnets. it’s real.

  16. Amanda @ Exploring Life & Things on June 13, 2016 at 12:14 pm

Okay good to know this about the donuts! I’m always on the hunt for the best donuts when I travel to new places:) The highlight of my weekend was running the Ragnar Relay race in Chicago!

  17. Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment on June 13, 2016 at 12:24 pm

I seems to me that we use to just get sick in the winter months. Now is seems like all year round. The allergies have been awful this season. Hope everyone is better soon. xo Lauren

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 2:06 pm

right??! i agree. i used to only get sick in the spring and fall (usually a small cold) and now i feel like i just sniffle for months

  18. Crystal on June 13, 2016 at 12:52 pm

    Omg those donuts…drool..

The highlight of my weekend was just hanging out with family on the back deck (with the fans on lol), relaxing with margaritas and chips n salsa. Summer is my favorite 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 2:05 pm

      that sounds amaaaaazing

  19. S U G A R & S A V A G E on June 13, 2016 at 1:07 pm

The Donut Bar is on our “must eat” list for our next trip to San Diego but if the lines are THAT crazy, I think we may end up copying you on the Nomad donuts instead!!!

    Hope Liv is feeling better…

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 2:05 pm

just go on an off time, or you can order online after 3pm!
thank you! she’s doing much better <3

  20. Rebecca on June 13, 2016 at 1:08 pm

Love reading your posts – donuts are always a good choice 🙂

I’m looking for some info on exercises to prevent my diastasis recti from getting worse during my second pregnancy. Any info on also healing this would be amazing too but I imagine healing this during a pregnancy would be close to impossible. Any info you have or direction you can point me would be amazing.
    Thanks!!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2016 at 2:04 pm

i would just work on diaphragmatic breathing while you’re pregnant. focus on filling your belly for the inhale and as you exhale, empty your belly and pull your belly button in towards your spine, engaging your TA. i wouldn’t do anything else besides preg-friendly core exercises, because you want your abs to separate to make room for the baby! ALSO i would avoid any exercises where your belly makes a cone shape. so if you’re doing a push-up or down dog and you see your belly making a cone, i would stop.
after baby is here, i highly recommend seeing a PT if you haven’t already to help with the DR. with their help you can perform exercises to reduce the separation. https://diastasisrehab.com <-- check out this site. lots of helpful info!
