Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Fri-YAY. What are you up to this weekend?? Anything fun or exciting?

Some of our Tucson fam is coming into town (WAHOO!) and we’re all ready for P’s party this weekend. I can’t wait! Today, I’m elbow-deep in sangria and guacamole-making, and putting the goodie bags together. In addition to our fiesta + time with the fam, I’m also planning on catching an Orangetheory class and a Spin class at PURE.

In standard Friday fashion, here are some faves from the week and around the web!

Latte

The highlights by far, were celebrating the Pilot’s and P’s birthdays. For the Pilot, Liv and I got to work making a double-layer chocolate cake with homemade buttercream frosting. (Pro tip: I’m a huge believer that it’s hard to tell if a cake is homemade. I almost always use boxed mixes for cakes -don’t tell Ina- but almost always make the frosting. The frosting is what gives it that homemade feel.)

Pilots cake

We went to dinner at Fish Market,

Blackened salmon

(Blackened salmon)

W p rose

(I had just taught spin, hence the hot mess hair)

and came home for cake.

Happy bday pilot

P’s birthday evening was pretty low-key here at home. When we took her bday pictures, she was surprisingly not into the cake. She took a couple of bits off with her finger, ate it, and looked at me like “WTF just happened?”

For her birthday night, we sang “Happy Birthday” using the same cake (a vegan one from Whole Foods),

Birthday cake

and when I cut into it, I saw that it was chocolate and not vanilla like I’d anticipated.

Singing happy bday

Of course, the thought of giving any child caffeine close to bedtime = sheer horror, but I couldn’t show it to her and not give her any. So, we cut her a slice, and she LOST HER MIND over it. She was giggling and cooing like the cutest little thing ever.

Eating cake

So there we go. Another chocoholic in the family.

Since this post already contains more pics of cake than any post in the history of the blog, I have to show you guys this.

Sugar skull cake

A SUGAR SKULL CAKE. When I saw it, I was blown away. I showed the picture to the Pilot and he was like, “Why did’n’t you buy it?!”

It’s already cake extravaganza around here between his bday, P’s, and her party, so I didn’t think we needed another one in the mix, but I swim in regrets.

Some more faves:

Menchie’s date with Livi

Menchies

(Their pumpkin flavor tastes like Thanksgiving in a cup.)

Moon drops!

Moon drops

They’re long, super sweet grapes, and we’ve all loved them. I took that pic of the bag before the rest was gone.

Can’t wait to try these sweet potatoes.

Pure spin class!

With my teaching schedule + weekly OTF, it can be a little tricky for me to coordinate outside classes. I was so excited when it worked out with my schedule to try a class at Pure indoor cycling, a new studio that opened downtown.pure-reception

Some of the things I loved about it:

they have a cute little boutique,

you borrow spin shoes for free,

shoes

and the vibe was awesome.

The bikes are brand-new Stages bikes (you can click lever and the resistance immediately shoots up, instead of having to crank a knob a bunch of times) and you’re positioned in a stage setting with a color-changing wall. Class was super sweaty 45 minutes, and I also liked the small dumbbell strength segment at the end. San Diego friends, the first class is free. I added the class to my schedule, registered, and the free class popped up.

Pure

I’m excited to check out another class soon!

I finally jumped back on the choker train, you know, after a 20-year hiatus. I actually love that they’re back in style, and while I’m fighting many of the returned 90s grunge trends, I’m a fan of this one. I wanted something that was a little more grown-up that my choker days of the past, so I rolled with this simple faux leather one and this gold one.

Rowing + slider circuit workout.

26 salads minus the lettuce.

This song for heavy climbs:

Black and white pumpkin chili.

GAH I LOVE PENTATONIX. Totally got their new Christmas album.. and have started playing it. No shame.

Have a wonderful Friday!

Newsletter friends: I’ll have your 7-day reset info in your inbox later today.

xoxo

Gina

Just want to say that I love reading your blog! I try to wait for a day of the week (usually Tuesday or Friday) that I have a quiet moment to myself to read several entries at a time. When I only read one I get sad it’s over so soon! Thanks for all of the fitness inspiration and truth regarding life with littles. I am expecting our second in March. Not really sure how adjusting from a family of 3 to 4 sill go but we are super excited.

And the chokers coming back surprised me… Even the plastic ‘tattoo’ chokers are back. I saw it on a mannequin a while back and I was like what?!?? Not sure I’ll be rocking one anytime soon but we shall see.

thank so much for reading and congratulations on your pregnancy!! i feel like the adjustment from 1-2 kids was WAY easier than 0-1 kid.
i thought that about the tattoo chokers, too! i’m like i can’t go back to something i used to buy for $5 at claire’s haha.
hope you have a great weekend!

I was thinking the same as the Pilot about the skull cake. It reminds me of Tucson! So did P sleep after all the chocolate?

Looks like such a fun week! Gotta love tasty cakes – and birthdays galore are the perfect time to include them in a healthy, well-rounded diet. 🙂

I can’t wait to see what the girls are for Halloween this year!
