3/22: Meals, fitness, fave travel snacks

Hi friends! How’s the weekend going? Hope you’re having a great one. <3 Disneyland on Friday was a blast -I have lots of pics to share tomorrow- and last night we went to see Cinderella. It was SO good; not too over-the-top, and beautiful to watch. This morning we’re chilling at home, and I’m fighting a weird allergy/cold/sickness/blah thing. I’m really hoping it’s allergies and I can shake it off!

Here’s what the week is looking like for fitness:

SUNDAY: Off. Was hoping to get in a short run today, but going to take it easy instead

MONDAY: BODYPUMP + Spin

TUESDAY: Orangethery

WEDNESDAY: Off

THURSDAY: Barre + easy cardio

FRIDAY: HIIT blitz (30 minutes)

SATURDAY: Dance cardio or run

As far as meals go, I’m not planning a lot of dinners because we have a fun trip planned! Instead, we’re going to grab some staples and lots of snacks. Here are some of my favorite foods to pack for long days at the airport, or to have in my suitcase when the snack monster strikes and I’m out of town. I also love to have lots of snacks on hand for Liv, so these are some of the usual suspects:

Travel day:

Homemade trail mix (raw nuts, chocolate chips and unsweetened dried cranberries in a little baggie)

Bars (Pure bars for me, homemade granola bars or Trader Joe’s cereal bars for the little lady)

Fruit (apples, bananas and oranges work well. I’ve also packed a little container full of berries before) and the single-serve packages of Justin’s nut butter (put these in the quart-sized liquid bag)

Kale chips

Protein powder in a protein shaker

Meal: I’ll either make a breakfast cookie (these travel surprisingly well in a little container) or a sandwich on Paleo bread. For Liv, I’ll usually make an almond butter and jelly or deli sandwich.

Bfast cookie 2

In my suitcase:

Turkey jerky

Bars

Single packs of oatmeal

Tea (I’ll usually have some tea bags in my backpack or purse, so I’ll ask for hot water when beverage service comes around and add my own teabag)

More nut butters

Protein powder in baggies

While we’re out of town, we’ll usually go out to eat for meals, or grab some groceries to make some quick meals at the hotel. It’s nice to have backup snack options on hand, especially when you like to snack often throughout the day.

What are some of your favorite travel snacks? Anything you like to pack and enjoy on the airplane? Anything you do to make a flight easier with a preschooler? Thankfully, Liv was awesome on our last flight. I packed some books, toys, snacks, and charged up with iPad with these headphones. She ended up not touching the iPad and looked out the window most of the time. Someone seems to like planes like someone else in the family. 😉

Hope you have a very happy Sunday!

xoxo

Gina

I hope you have an awesome time on your trip!! I also like to pack tea bags when I travel (and a bottle of liquid stevia in my quart size bag because I’m weird like that), as well as some sort of bar, spelt or high protein pretzels or almonds, and whenever I travel out of Denver I get a hummus plate with extra veggies to fill me up until I get wherever I’m going. Safe travels! 🙂

The last time I went on vacation I took some homemade trail mix with me too. I was perfect, as we’d all agreed that we’d bring our own snacks, but eat meals together. I know I’m going to take it with my on my next trip to Vancouver.

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 4:17 pm

that’s a great way to do it!

We’re big on packing snacks and travel meals for vacations! For lunch on the road, I usually make roasted veggie & hummus wraps w/dill havarti. For breakfasts I’ll make chewy oatmeal bars with hemp seeds and apricots. Or pull a loaf of homemade zucchini or banana bread out of the freezer and let it defrost while we’re traveling.

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 4:17 pm

      that is a brilliant idea!

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 4:17 pm

Gina, have you found a protein powder that you like? I’m in the middle of my search and would love any guidance. I think I’d like to stay away from Whey, but I’d love a post on what you do & why you think it’s best.

Also, where do you get unsweetened cranberries? I’ve never seen those & I want them!

Have a great trip! Appreciate your blog.

      here are my top 3:
shakeology (lots of awesome super foods, tastes like dessert)
daily burn (simple ingredients, inexpensive, tastes great)
sun warrior (simple ingredients, good texture)
      they’re all vegan proteins!
trader joe’s usually has the unsweetened cranberries. so good on salads and in trail mix!
      xo

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I’ve heard of Sun Warrior, but not the other ones. I’ll check them out.

Have a great trip! Good reminder for me to pick up some Pure Bars. I haven’t had them in a while and I love the variety of flavors. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

they’re so good! hope you’re enjoying the weekend!

  9. Elle on March 22, 2015 at 4:14 pm

I usually take crackers and nut butter and Stingers honey chews. My stomach doesn’t love flying so I don’t usually eat much.

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 4:15 pm

i usually eat to distract myself from how much i hate flying haha

  11. Fancy on March 22, 2015 at 7:04 pm

How did Liv like the Cinderella movie? I’m taking my 3 year old daughter tomorrow…I’m a bit worried she won’t like it because it doesn’t seem “cutesy”, is it ok for 3 year olds??? Xo!!

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 9:36 pm

it was a little old for her, especially since it didn’t have singing. for live action movies, she does really well if there’s singing (she loves mary poppins, and during the new version of annie, she was INTO IT). she liked the movie, but i could tell some parts were slow for her. we snacked on lots of popcorn and she was happy 😉 it also wasn’t scary at all, so that as good

      • Fancy on March 23, 2015 at 4:51 am

        Thanks Gina! Fingers crossed…

  12. ClaireRose on March 22, 2015 at 7:06 pm

What turkey jerky do you eat? Thank you for the workouts! I’m bringing you book to read and use while I’m traveling this week:-)

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 9:34 pm

i love the perky jerky. they have it at whole foods and target. best texture and really salty delicious 🙂

so so happy you’re enjoying the book, too! <3

Hi Gina! Okay, everyone in Northern California is either sick or suffering from allergies. It’s going around! You know my favorite meal to travel with? A baked sweet potato topped with almond butter. It keeps me full and fits nicely in my purse! Where are you going?

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2015 at 9:34 pm

it’s a bummer everyone has this! it’s so weird
that is one of my favorite snacks ever, with a little cinnamon. so good 🙂
      we’re going to arkansas

  14. Dani @ DaniCaliforniaCooks on March 22, 2015 at 8:34 pm

I travel weekly for work, and I carry a lot of those same snacks! My go-tos are protein bars (ThinkThin or Larabars), Justin’s nut butters, fruit (apples, oranges), and pistachios. I also carry tea bags and ask for hot water when the beverage cart comes!

  15. Emilie on March 23, 2015 at 12:49 am

you’ve given me some great snack inspiration there! I get quite grumpy travelling, but I always end up staring out the window the the entire journey too!

There’s something therapeutic about looking out over the clouds 🙂

(((oooh now I wanna all meet up at DISNEY!!!)))

      let’s goooooo

  17. Bethany on March 23, 2015 at 4:06 am

These are great ideas! Very similar to my lists of favs. We are about to have quite the traveling adventure from Europe to Japan so I have been planning this week. Our snacks so far include nuts butters, protein powder divided out in one scoop baggies, oatmeal packs, Quest bars, Detour bars, apples, bananas, beef jerky, cashews and Brookside dark chocolate acai ? seriously dangerous! I also like to pack a liter bottle of water or two in my check-in. It seems to be so hard to find water traveling or it’s like $10 (okay maybe not that much but still ridiculous), so I like to have some when we get to our room.

    • Fitnessista on March 23, 2015 at 4:57 pm

the dark chocolate acai is soooo good

  18. Cara's Healthy Cravings on March 23, 2015 at 4:48 am

I have 30 hour flight ahead of me at the end of the week, so this post is quite timely! I have already stocked up on lots of Larabars, but you have inspired me with some other options, thanks! Safe and fun travels to you 🙂

    • Bethany on March 24, 2015 at 12:07 am

I cannot believe there is a such thing as a 30 hour flight!

  19. Stacy @ Sweating tulipZ on March 23, 2015 at 5:51 am

I hope you guys have a safe and enjoyable trip!

I usually pack some fruit (depending on the length), protein powder, quest bars/protein bars, almonds, and cashews.

  20. Erin @ Erin's Inside Job on March 23, 2015 at 9:22 am

Have a great trip! I always hoard snacks whenever I travel like I am going to run out of food. I pack everything from snack bars to jerky to granola. My husband always makes fun of me but then is grateful when he is hungry and I can save him with my bag of snacks!

  21. Faye Holloway on March 24, 2015 at 8:51 pm

I’m a snack hoarder too – I measure everything in single portion bagees and love pretzels with peanut or almond butter, KIND bars, oatmeal packets, and trail mix of nuts. Plus some sort of chocolate and I used to pack a ton of gum, but I’m trying to ween myself off of aspartame. On a workout note, how many times would you recommend doing orange theory a week? I went today and thought about going Thursday, but my body feels like it needs more recovery. Those classes klick my butt – in a good way ??
