3/5: Thoughts from the week

-Whew! Writing blog posts is even more invigorating with a newborn. You’re in “diaper/feed/pump/playtime/nap” mode and then all of a sudden it’s like “try to write cohesive sentences. You may have 10 minutes, 30 minutes or an hour- who knows how long. Go!” Many posts are added to throughout the day.. makes things more exciting 😉

-She’s napping in the K’tan right now, but thank you so much to those of you who suggested swaddling her for naptime, too. (We usually only swaddle at night.)  She took a great nap in her pack n’ play the other day and the weirdest thing happened… I napped, too. Since she’s usually attached to me, I worry about sleeping at the same time, but since she was safely in her pack n’ play, mama could get some quality, mouth-open (so hot) shuteye. I figure I’ll keep holding her or wearing her for most of her naps –she also sleeps well in the bucket- but if she can have one nap in the pack n’ play so I can get extra things done around here, that will be bueno. Everyone tells you to “sleep when the baby sleeps” when you have a little one, but I’m sure many of you can attest that it’s pretty impossible in the beginning.

-It’s been fun to take Liv on a lot of first-time adventures, like the zoo yesterday. Even though she was awake almost the entire time, I’m pretty sure we had more fun than she did 😉 She probably won’t remember any of this later, but I can’t wait to show her pictures.

-One of the many projects I’d like to do is to make a baby book for her with all of the pictures up until now. I have photos of the family when they found out we were pregnant, the belly pictures, Bella curled up on the belly, ultrasound images, the blue and then pink cupcakes, hospital pics, tons of newborn photos with everyone who loves her, first bath, napping with mom and dad- it’s going to be so much fun to put it together. When I was little, my mom had a huge photo album for each kid, filled with pictures from birth until current day. Every morning, from when I was 2-3 or so, I’d drag out the photo album and look at all of the pictures. I think Livi will love having one of her own.

-I also need to video her snoring in the K’tan or Moby and one of her cries because I hear they change as she gets older.

-Speaking of getting older, it’s time to pack away almost all of her newborn clothes! Many of them have been borderline too small for the past couple of weeks, but she’s officially in her 3 month clothes. Any good ideas on how to store them? I was thinking of just getting a plastic bin with a lid and labeling it with “newborn” but please let me know if you have any better storage ideas.

-It’s hard to keep Bell off fresh baby laundry… and the Boppy.

-Baby socks are SO fun… they make so many cute ones, it’s kinda ridiculous. My favorite ones are in the pic with Levi below with the tulle on the point, and also love the ones that look like little ballet slippers.

-Levi is one of Liv’s BFFs, and is going to be here with his mommy (a great friend) for 6 months. I’m so excited to take Mommy and Me classes with them, and Liv is also excited- like her mama, she has a thing for older men 😉

Glad you were able to take a nap with her. She is so adorable. You and Tom must love her more and more each day. I can’t wait to see the pictures of her growing up.

I always make sure to get space bags for our baby/kid clothes and put the clothes in the bags then in a big plastic bin with a lid. The extra protection is necessary for us because it’s so humid in Ohio but I don’t know if you would need that or not, it will keep critters out though. It also saves a ton of space which is necessary too. They grow out of clothes so quickly but I don’t want to get rid of anything in case we need it later (which we will) so the space bags really help cram lots of clothes into one bin! We have 2 kids now with lots of outgrown clothes and we’ve only filled two bins! It costs a lot of money for space bags up front but you never have to replace them and it’s far cheaper than buying all new clothes in the long run!

I second the space bags! We have most of our son’s clothes stored away and the space bags made it so much easier!

I love reading your family posts 🙂

For storing the newborn clothes, when I worked at a dance studio, we stored almost all the costumes in those ziplock vacuume seal bags. You fill it up, vacuume the air out, and they take up such little space it’s amazing. Just label them as you go, and it will make things easier as time goes on (especially if you’re planning on more little ones 🙂 )

I LOVE the socks!! I niece had a bunch like those, I loved the little ballet shoe ones she had.

My mom used to make a photo book for me and one for my sister and give it to us in our Easter baskets each year. I mean… the Easter Bunny made them for us 🙂 I really loved looking through them, and a few years ago I compiled all of the pictures into 2 big photo books. I know Liv will love the pictures you’ve taken. I’ve only ever seen 1 picture of my mom when she was pregnant! I wish they had documented more. That comment about Liv liking older men made me snort a little, haha 🙂

That picture of Liv and Levi is SO adorable! I can’t get enough of it.

Glad Liv has such an adorable playmate and glad you have another mommy in town to walk through the crazy days of new motherhood with…having a friend going thru a parallel stage of motherhood as you are, at the same time, is a priceless gift and glad you have her, even though only for 6 months…better than nothing, right! 🙂

Those socks are adorable!! Love them.

And I’ll be 39 weeks (!!!) on Friday and am also having a girl. I am SO impatient and can’t wait to meet her. Thank you for sharing all your tips and tricks and baby items you love as I’ve been making notes! Send me baby-having thoughts! 🙂

Hey Gina, I emailed you last week a really touching baby story. I would love if you would be able to share that on your family page as it is an amazing story and with the number of readers you have you would really be able to help them a lot. Heres the link to the story again http://blessedbybrenna.blogspot.com/2012/02/commemorating-rare-disease-day-my.html

So far, all my wee mans old clothes are stored in vacuum clothes storage bags. Keep them safe and so much easier to store. Realisitcally I know that one day I will have to part with some of the clothes, but at the moment I still have everything he has ever worn, far too sentimental 🙂

when i went to graduation parties for high school a couple years ago, so many parents did the cutest ideas throughout the years that they saved until graduation. one of them was using “oh the places you’ll go” and having a favorite teacher from each grade write a special note at the end of the year. obviously a little far in advance, but still a cute idea!

For the easier to navigate Family Page it would be nice if you had the pregnancy updates organized because I am pregnant and I like to look at what you wrote when you were at the same week as me :).

Thanks for your posting…I love the Family page!

  15. Jaime on March 5, 2012 at 7:12 pm

Oh my goodness- baby boy socks are not nearly that cute!!!

Hmmm, I hadn’t thought of vacuum seal bags before- that’s a great idea.
Here’s my organizational tip: Keep a bin in the closet (or laundry room) to hold the next set of outgrown clothes. I’ve found that many different baby clothes brands have slightly different sizing, so some 6-month clothes fit like 9-months, or some fit like 3-months. If you have a bin nearby, as soon as you find a onesie that’s a bit too snug, you can throw it in the bin. I also like to keep the next-size-up bin nearby for that same reason.

Baby socks are SO cute it’s crazy! Whenever I’m buying a gift for a baby shower, I always throw in at least one pair of socks. I just can’t resist! The last ones I bought were for a little boy and they were alligator feet!

  17. Maddy on March 5, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Thanks so much for sharing your precious baby photos! Livi rocks that hot pink headband and her outfits are quite fabulous too (socks are the icing on the cake). What a pretty little cutie pie she is!

That picture is adorable! I love cute baby pics! I think being a baby photographer would be a fun job. Can’t believe you’re already packing away her newborn clothes!

  19. Morgan on March 5, 2012 at 10:23 pm

I took those tupperware drawer storage bins (3-tier) and put a cute, homemade label on each drawer with size and type of clothing inside…categorize each type of clothing (socks, pjs) and toss them in…sometimes when there is a set (like top & bottom that go together) I’ll put them in a ziplock baggie and then store then in their particular drawer. Also, you can never go wrong with those little bins (3 for $1.24 @ Walmart!!) especially with little things like socks and hair accessories! Goodluck!!

  20. AshleyC on March 6, 2012 at 1:40 am

My clothing storage advice is this…I ALWAYS keep an empty drawer in the bottom of the dresser…that way, anything they outgrow between seasons gets washed and folded and put away until the season change and I won’t have to keep getting in and out of totes. (Which is what I store our boys’ clothes in) This has proven to be a great help, especially since my boys are so close in age (18 mo. apart) Good luck!

I think that is such a great idea to make a baby book for Olivia! She will love looking back on pictures and everything. You could even take it one step further and go full-on scrapbook mode and print out some of your favorite blog posts from the family page, since many of them were so heartfelt and touching and all about her! I’m sure one day she’d love to read them 🙂

  22. Rebecca on March 6, 2012 at 8:38 am

Right now I have Max’s “too-small” clothes pile in a Lulu lemon shopping bag….

I’m probably going to get a storage bin though.

I get what you are saying about taking care of baby and then trying to write. I’m completing an online course right now and I simply cannot do it when he is around!

  23. nicole on March 6, 2012 at 9:05 am

She is adorable! I like that you keep the “normal” stuff separate from the baby updates, even tho we all love to read about her, and see her cute little face, I still like that you keep the fitness/food updates going 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 6, 2012 at 12:03 pm

thank you! she’s my whole life, but i understand that many people may not want to read about her all the time (and it’s a fitness blog) <3

They are the most adorable, tiny, best dressed couple in the world! I die for his seersucker and her socks!

What is it about dogs and fresh laundry? My maltese, Stormy, get so excited when I’m folding fresh laundry on the bed because she can’t wait to roll in it!

I cried when it was time to pack up the newborn clothes. So bittersweet.

    • Fitnessista on March 6, 2012 at 3:52 pm

i know?! it makes my heart soar and sink at the same time. proud that she’s growing so big, but sad because it really is happening so quickly

  27. nicole on March 6, 2012 at 5:28 pm

We used space bags for the kiddos clothes and it saves so much room. You can fit so much more into a big plastic bin and it is so much easier to organize according to size that way. A little bit of organization now according to size goes a long way when you pull them out for the next kiddo 🙂

  28. Michelle on March 6, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I loved this post, My cat always finds her way to the pile of clean baby laundry! I am moving into 6-9 month clothes for my little one! Where the heck does time go? I think baby socks are one of my favorite things in the world, I sorted and matched a whole drawer of them a few days ago and it was actually very calming, Not to mention adorable! I love all the family posts! 🙂 I wanted to ask you if you saw the View today. Mayium Blialik from Blossom and The Big Bang Theory was talking about her new book “Beyond the Sling” which advocates Attachment parenting. I downloaded a sample on my kindle and I am hooked, some of it I don’t agree with but there is a lot of very interesting concepts. I plan on reading the whole thing some time. I will say it again Olivia is adorable 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 7, 2012 at 9:01 pm

just downloaded it! i’m so excited 🙂
      xoxo
