3/8: Meals and fitness

Acai bowls. Bicep curl spoon to mouth. The end.

Tiki port

It definitely feels like spring is here! It was an awesome day with a trip to the beach, and snacks at Tiki Port. Summer, I CAN TASTE YOU.

I think I may be the only weirdo who likes Daylight Savings. As an Arizona native, I’m still pretty new to all of this -AZ doesn’t touch their clocks ever- and I’m a fan so far. During the fall, we get an extra hour in the morning, where it’s a gift to wake up and not be a zombie; in the spring, we get an extra hour of evening light. I’m pretty stoked about this, because during the winter months, it got dark SO early (by 5pm many nights, the sun was down or on its way). It’s harder to get outside and do things with a kiddo when it’s dark, like go for walks or to the dog park (where they have zero lighting), so I’m excited to get out and about after Liv’s naptime each night.

Ocean beachin

I did some meal planning and prep yesterday, and we also got grocery shopping out of the way. In taking back Sunday fashion, today has been beautifully relaxing.

Here’s what’s on the menu this week:

Snack and prep:

Classic amazeballs

Breakfast cookies for a few days (I’m going to make three for Liv and myself so they’re ready to go)

Chop veggies for salads

Make quinoa salad (done)

Make more Paleo lemon cake. We just finished our second batch

Paleo cake

Dinners

Maple-orange salmon (a fave forever; recipe is in the book) with sweet potatoes and garlic-lemon asparagus

Detox chicken in the slow cooker with veggies

Blue Apron meals! I lurked the menu, and it sounds like we’re getting turkey chili, papusas (LOVE) and shrimp with rice noodles. Sounds amazing.

Salmon 1 of 1 10

Here’s what the fitness plan is looking like:

Sunday: Active recovery (maybe an easy walk)

Monday: Teach BODYPUMP + Spin

Tuesday: CORE40 (taking a good friend who will be in town and has been wanting to try it)

Wednesday: Teach Spin

Thursday: Orangetheory

Friday: OFF

Saturday: Teach Zumba + Barre

Barreoclock

What’s on your fitness plan for the week? Be sure to check in with your March workout here!

Any new classes on the horizon? Daylight Savings: yay or nay?

Hope you’re having a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

xoxo

    The paleo cake looks delicious!!

  2. Sarah on March 8, 2015 at 4:51 pm

I also like daylight savings! Only challenge is when my youngest asks why she’s going to bed when the sun is still up (I still don’t have an answer that will appeal to a 3 year old :\

  3. Jessie on March 8, 2015 at 4:57 pm

I do like daylight savings, but it can be challenging with a young child. I never knew that Arizona didn’t participate in this, how interesting.

    Have a nice evening!

    • queenoffitness on March 8, 2015 at 7:50 pm

Hawai’i and Arizona are the only two states that don’t observe DST.

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:18 pm

you’re right about that- liv woke up from her nap at 630 tonight haha
hope you had a great weekend!

Oh I looove daylight savings! Having the extra hour in the evening makes a huge difference to me!

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:18 pm

      i totally agree!

  5. Kelsey Halena on March 8, 2015 at 5:32 pm

Excited for a week of meals after deciding to add some chicken into a couple meals a week after having been pescetarian for 5 years. I read your post back from when you started eating chicken again and agreed with so much of your perspective! Thanks for being such an inspiration on International Women’s Day.

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:17 pm

<3 that means so much, kelsey. thank you for reading! hope you enjoyed the chicken, too :)xoxo

  6. Yaara Leve on March 8, 2015 at 5:51 pm

I actually like daylight savings too. It feels like renewal and beginning things fresh and just letting more light in. It’s nice here in Chi-town too–because in the winter it literally gets dark at like 3:30–so damn depressing. So any extra sunlight just feels wonderful. I think I need to give your salmon recipe a try. A just bought some fresh sockeye from whole foods yesterday. Looks delish! Have a great week! XOXO

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:17 pm

amen to that!! hope you had some lovely salmon 🙂

I didn’t know AZ didn’t participate in the whole fall back and spring forward thing. I actually think that is the best thing…you don’t lose or gain an hour. Consistency is king in my book. Have a great Sunday evening and the Paleo cake looks delicious!

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:17 pm

the consistency was nice! i’m worried about waking up on time to teach tomorrow haha

    Meg is having a baby?!

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:16 pm

      no, tom’s sister had a baby 🙂

  9. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on March 8, 2015 at 6:35 pm

Love springing ahead! 🙂 I’m curious..can the lemon cake be made with all coconut flour?

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:16 pm

no- coconut flour is very thirsty and it would be dry

Each time I see those paleo cake pics, I think it’s meatloaf with ketchup! Lol

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:16 pm

hahah i do like turkey meatloaf with ketchup 😉

  12. Erika S. on March 8, 2015 at 8:57 pm

I love getting the extra hour of sleep in the fall but adjusting to the spring forward is tough.

I never knew AZ didn’t change the clocks…until I lived in Tucson (brief 8 month stint)…so interesting. I just read that Hawaii doesn’t change as well…

I need to try one of those acai bowls….yum!

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:15 pm

      interesting!
yes, they are life changing 🙂 xoxo

  13. Amy S on March 8, 2015 at 9:49 pm

What’s the topping on the acai bowl? It looks delicious!

Congrats on the new baby niece! 😀

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2015 at 10:15 pm

it’s fruit, granola, coconut, honey and peanut butter 🙂

  14. Sarah F on March 9, 2015 at 1:39 am

I love your positive thoughts on daylight savings time- my Facebook feed was filled with people complaining that they lost an hour of sleep rather than focusing on the extra hour. I live in the UK so we haven’t changed our clocks yet- we’ll change them March 29.

I’m originally from Saskatchewan (Canada) and they don’t change their clocks either- and it’s way better. I’ve never understood the hour change, as it’s not significant to make enough of a difference, and just means my car time is wrong half the year.

  15. Mila on March 9, 2015 at 1:58 am

Do you mean it’s nice to have an extra hour of light in the fall? In the spring time, it should be the opposite.

If it’s getting dark at 6pm, you “spring forward”, and then it’s dark at 5pm.

I like it because sunrise is at an earlier hour which, to me, that natural sunlight makes it easier to get up and moving in the morning.

It’s funny hearing how some places don’t observe it (like Saskathewan, mentioned above). I wonder if kids who grew up in those states are totally thrown by this discovery when they hear about it for the first time: “now every body across America, except for us, is going to change their clocks today.” Whatt!?!?!

    • Mila on March 9, 2015 at 2:01 am

oops spelled Saskatchewan wrong, and i totally didn’t mean to imply it’s a state! 🙂

    • Mila on March 9, 2015 at 2:02 am

aaand my daylight calculation is all backwards. lol i should have skipped the commenting today!

  16. CARLA on March 9, 2015 at 2:44 am

    YES YES YES
Im a fellow HUUUGE DST fan too but for the oddest of reasons 🙂
when I do homework with the child the light outside makes it far less (whispers) PAINFUL.

  17. lissy on March 9, 2015 at 3:42 am

From a programming perspective, dls is a giant pain to deal with. Time zones in general.
From a health perspective, messing with your internal clock isn’t good for you if you’re sensitive to that. The Monday after the switch is the most dangerous driving day of the year. I much prefer having light of later, so I kinda wish we’d just keep dls all year round

  18. Char on March 9, 2015 at 4:56 am

I NEED to make amaze balls and breakfast cookies sometimes. I always read about them, but have never tried them yet…so for that I apologize haha! I do love daylight savings for the added light in the evening and I love your idea to go for walks after nap time. Even though my daughter naps at around 1pm, I feel like it can be so awkward by the time she wakes up to go out or do anything, but a walk would fit perfectly now – especially after dinner!

  19. Linda @ The Fitty on March 9, 2015 at 5:05 am

Oh Gina, it’s been a bad week for me. What do you do when you’re stuck in a fitness rut?

  20. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on March 9, 2015 at 5:22 am

I love having the extra hour of light in the evening but getting up this morning was pretty rough. Soon it will be normal and I’ll be happy when I’m walking the pups after work in the light! This week is bringing some super warm temps (40s and 50s lol) so I’m looking forward to it actually feeling like spring!

  21. Crystal on March 9, 2015 at 6:01 am

I like turning the clock forward, but I wish we could do that on a Monday afternoon instead of Sunday morning, lol!

    • Fitnessista on March 9, 2015 at 4:50 pm

      amen to that!

  22. Stacey @BingeFreeMe on March 9, 2015 at 7:04 am

I made the Paleo Lemon Cake this weekend and we are OBSESSED! THANK YOU!

i was just in honduras and ate my weight in papusas. i would love to make them at home — so fun!

    • Fitnessista on March 9, 2015 at 4:49 pm

      ahhh they’re so good!

  24. Sarah on March 9, 2015 at 7:58 am

I love the time switch as well, and it’s refreshing to see positive comments about it! From a retail/restaurant perspective, the extra daylight at the end of the day really helps with business. It is a true economy-booster.

    • Fitnessista on March 9, 2015 at 4:49 pm

i totally believe it! we don’t want to go anywhere when it’s dark already

  25. Sam on March 9, 2015 at 8:08 am

That acai bowl looks amazing. I bought the acai packets from Whole Foods and I keep meaning to make one. I have a Vitamix, and I know that *technically* that thing can destroy anything, but I am so meek about mixing things that are frozen. I always think the Vitamix is going to explode. I know, I’m strange.

I also love Daylight Savings, but more so in the fall. It felt darker than usual this morning, but I’m really looking forward to more daylight. Philly is supposed to be a bit warmer this week. Thank goodness : )

  26. Erin @ Erin's Inside Job on March 9, 2015 at 9:00 am

I love Blue Apron and it has been a huge lifesaver. Plus I get to feel like a fancy chef.

I am running more since I am training for another half, so I do 3 days of HIIT classes and 2 days of running. This weekend is my graduation class from the studio where I have been shadowing so I am pumped about actually becoming a paid employee!

  27. Tracy on March 9, 2015 at 10:50 am

The extra hour of light is nice but I sure hate to lose that hour. Sunday went by way too quickly!

Congratulations to the new parents!!! 🙂

  28. Jacki on March 9, 2015 at 12:00 pm

I’ve lived in AZ almost my entire life, and I don’t comprehend time changes. We were in Vegas this weekend for a baseball tournament, and it was a brutal awakening when all of our Flagstaff parents realized that the 8 a.m. game we were playing on Sunday really felt like 7 a.m. We’re heading to San Diego for Spring Break next week and staying in Sunset Cliffs. Our daughter is a year older than Liv, so I’ll be scouring your blog this week for all of the stuff you do with her. And I already have Tiki Port, Hodad’s, and OB Noodle House on my list. It’s acceptable to eat six meals a day while on vacation, right?

    • Fitnessista on March 9, 2015 at 4:47 pm

totally acceptable! you will have a blast here in OB! if you can do a date night, check out bo-beau kitchen. brunch at 3rd corner is also fantastic 🙂
      some of liv’s favorite places:
      belmont park at mission bay
      the new children’s museum
      scripps aquarium
liberty station (lots of cute little restaurants and a beautiful park)
yoga at if i was a little bird
      fanuel park

      • Jacki on March 9, 2015 at 4:59 pm

Awesome – thank you! I’m also hoping to sample an OrangeTheory class since that’s something we don’t have in Flag and I’ve been dying to give it a try.

        • Fitnessista on March 9, 2015 at 10:38 pm

it’s SO GOOD! first class is free, too 🙂

  29. Mike Flanigan on March 9, 2015 at 1:37 pm

I love daylight savings time! My in-laws live in AZ and I’m always jealous of them when we have to set the clocks back in the fall. As far as the spoon to mouth bicep curls go, I’d love to try me some of those Acai bowls!

  30. Shaina Anderson on March 9, 2015 at 3:30 pm

I love daylight savings!! That extra time at night with some sun is KEY when you have kids. And that acai bowl looks AMAZING. Tiki Port is a must when we head down next time!!

    • Fitnessista on March 9, 2015 at 4:39 pm

      you would LOVE tiki 🙂
