5/17: Friday Faves

-Feeding the ducks with Oliv

Photo 96

I Googled “best foods to feed ducks” and frozen peas were on the list. Turns out that turtles love them, too! As soon as we’d throw them in the water, we’d see the little turtle heads pop out and anxiously swim in our direction.

Noodle also decided this week that she likes to wear her sunnies.

I went to an expanding practice with a friend yesterday, and it always makes me feel like I have SO much work to do with my poses. When I go to a power class or hour-long practice, even though I hit my wall, I still think “Yeah! I’ve got this!” As soon as I go to an expanding class, I take my humble pie and sad, sore arms with me.

Getting to take extra yoga classes this week has been incredible. I’ve hardly done any cardio, and while I’m ready to get back to teaching (it starts again with World Beat tomorrow), the break was a nice refresher.

-This lip scrub. I know I’ve been a little LUSH intense lately, but I really love all of the products I’ve tried. This lip scrub gently exfoliates and has a fresh, minty taste. (Meg has a great recipe for lip scrub here if you’re looking to DIY!) If you have any cruelty-free brands you love sans parabens and harsh chemicals, please let me know! Some of my favorites are Juice Beauty, Korres and Tarte.

The iced versions feel like summer to me.. and the jolt isn’t too shabby, either 😉

Speaking of coffee, check out my new mug:

I’m making a double batch next week. The last batch was not long for this world, and it was amazing.

-Veggies as noodles

Spspaghetti

There are times when you need a real, starchy noodle to soak up a certain sauce (like my Uncle’s famous bolognese), but for the most part, I find regular noodles to be pretty boring. I love summer veggies as noodles (zucchini will always hold my heart). If you’re looking for ways to experiment, check out this cheesy red pepper pasta — kelp noodles or spiralized veggies work well. There’s some basil in the backyard destined for pesto veggie pasta!

-Gipsy Kings on Pandora

And then there’s the moment in a crowded coffee shop, your Pandora station is still on “Elmo” and you haven’t plugged in your headphones yet. Oops.

What are you loving this week? Any fun plans this weekend??

First round of Summer Shape Up 2013 details will be up Monday! It starts on the 27th.

xoxo

Just made some zucchini spaghetti last night and I’m officially back on my spiralized veggie kick!

  2. Heather (Heather's Dish) on May 17, 2013 at 12:15 pm

OH! So good to know about the peas – we’ve been doing a lot of duck-feeding lately and I’m sure they could use a little green in their hand-fed diet 😉 Weston also decided he loves his sunglasses this week. I just about melt from the cute every time!

I’ve never tried zucchini spaghetti, but it always looks so amazing. I’m a huge pasta lover so it’s nice to substitute it with some healthy veggies. Happy weekend!

I need one of those spiralizers because I have always wanted to make zucchini noodles! I always thought that you could only feed animals at the park bread but I’d way rather stick to peas! Hope you have a lovely weekend! Love + Shine Courtstar

So excited for SSU!! And I love the Elmo story and sweet Liv’s sunnies:)

So, I noticed the coffee place in your last post: love the name. Where in Arizona are you located? I’m in Phoenix for the next few days by myself and could use some recommendations on what to do near downtown (I’ll also have no transportation…yuck).

Love your lists! I’m digging TastyFace Organics–a new line of skincare with ingredients so clean you could eat them! And I may have tried…seriously, vanilla coconut and mint….don’t judge. http://www.tastyfaceorganics.com

Can’t wait for summer shape up.. And I looove lip scrub. It’s so amazing.
Especially making your own, I’ve been making my own for about 3 years now.
Adoreee that coffee mug! Oh man, I need one!
And I’ve also been dying for a spiralizer, but I just bought a juicer so I may have to wait to buy one for now.
Olivia sunglasses are the cutest thing ever.
    Have a beautiful weekend!

  9. Nicole on May 17, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Summer shape up already? I’m so excited!!!! And Livis glasses are just the cutest! Iced coffee is a staple right now 😉

  10. Julie on May 17, 2013 at 1:20 pm

I LOVED all of Sarah Jio’s books! Hope you enjoy!

  11. Cassie Vaughn on May 17, 2013 at 1:21 pm

I’m not sure if you were looking specifically for lip scrubs or any natural beauty products that are paraben free. I just started using Yes to Grapefruit face scrub to help combat really flushed skin, and so far I really like it. I’m still trying to give it 2 weeks before I make the final judgement on if it has helped or not. 🙂

I’m also loving the Bungalow this week! Picked it up after reading your recommendation for the author. I’m almost done so have started to slow down so that it won’t end! Thanks for the good rec and I’ll check out more of her books for sure. One of my favorite books this last year is South of Broad by Pat Conroy. 🙂
    Happy Friday!

  13. Liz on May 17, 2013 at 1:54 pm

Liv’s sunnies are so adorable! This week I’ve been loving your elliptical workouts. I’m a longtime blog reader but have only recently started doing the workouts you post. Now i’m wondering what took me so long, they’re great!

  14. Kelly on May 17, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Love Iced Americano’s in summer!! That’s my drink… unfortunately, I have to have cream and sugar in cold drinks. It’s weird, I drink my coffee black but if it’s iced, I have to have cream and sugar. Not good for the waistline, so I have to limit them. Have a great weekend! 🙂

  15. Emily @ The Good Era on May 17, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Haha the Elmo station totally cracked me up!! And those baby sunnies?’ Adorable!!!

  16. LisaG on May 17, 2013 at 2:30 pm

The following post shows you how you can use a julienne peeler to make veggie noddles if you don’t have a spiralizer. I have both, but each works.

Love Liv’s sunglasses; too cute for words! She probably wears them since you do!

  17. Kristen on May 17, 2013 at 2:40 pm

I’ve tried the veggie noodles before just to try to sneak in some extra nutrients and, honestly, I just couldn’t get on board with it. The texture was wierd to me and I just didn’t enjoy it. So I’ll just stick my regular noodles.

My son loves his sunglasses too. He also wears a little baseball cap. I can’t even stand how he looks wearing it.So cute!

  18. PracticingGrace on May 17, 2013 at 3:22 pm

I need to get my hands on a spiralizer. I’ve been doing kelp noodles recently. My heart swims when I do back to back days of yoga mmmm. I’m overdue for a week straight of yoga..

  19. Jenni on May 17, 2013 at 4:05 pm

I’m loving kombucha this week! It’s an awesome study buddy for people like me, who don’t drink caffeine! Although I must admit, I’m a little bit jealous of your Americanos. And of Liv’s sunglasses.

  20. Debbi on May 17, 2013 at 4:10 pm

I just saw that coffee mug on Fancy, is that where you got it?

  21. Alison on May 17, 2013 at 6:32 pm

    Hi!
I just moved to Oro Valley from Prescott. My 2-yr-old twin girls and I are good friends w/ Danielle (Sometimes Sweet) and Henry!! She told me to check out your blog when I moved down here. Can we talk yoga places around here? I can’t seem to find anything close. Do you go downtown??

    • Fitnessista on May 18, 2013 at 5:36 pm

      hey girl!
welcome to t-town 🙂 so cool that you’re friends with danielle- i love that girl. i usually go to yoga on 4th ave, or yoga oasis (midtown). the only place i’ve been in oro valley is bikram, and it was ok. i’ve heard amazing things about arizona power yoga, but am not sure how far north you are.
      xoxo

  22. Sam on May 17, 2013 at 6:33 pm

What spiralizer thing do you use for your veggie noodles? I’d really like to get one but I’ve only seen them in expensive cookware shops and I can’t justify the cost. I think I’d use it a lot though. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on May 18, 2013 at 5:35 pm

i use the joyce chen one from amazon- it was around $20 and works great

  23. Dede on May 17, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Um, you call those little turtles? Or maybe you just meant their heads. ; )

I would also like to know which spirilizer you would recommend. Each one I look into seems to get such mixed reviews.

    • Fitnessista on May 18, 2013 at 5:35 pm

      they were giant! 🙂
i use the joyce chen one and love it

  24. catherine c. on May 17, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Made your fudge! 🙂 Love it!!

    • Fitnessista on May 18, 2013 at 5:34 pm

      whoo hoo!

  25. Sharon on May 17, 2013 at 8:37 pm

I read Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio on your recommendation a while back. Such a good read…

  26. Kathleen@newversionofme on May 17, 2013 at 10:16 pm

So excited for summer shape up!!

  27. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on May 17, 2013 at 11:04 pm

LOL to the Elmo thing. I’m sure people, especially moms, understood! haha

  28. Laura B on May 17, 2013 at 11:50 pm

Pasta is boring?! That’s crazy talk! 🙂 I live tasting the pasta without too much sauce to cover it up. Or just with good olive oil, Italian seasoning and pecorino. Mmmm. I’ve tried spaghetti squash as my pasta and I wasn’t a fan. I love squash and I love pasta, but one isn’t a substitute for the other. Maybe I need to do something different. Or just go into it not thinking of it as a pasta dish, but just a squash dish.

  29. Chelsea on May 18, 2013 at 11:12 am

Uummmm, three cheers for the Gypsy Kings and summer! They’re one of my favorite bands to listen to with the windows down, so it brought a smile to my face to seem them on your list! Also, I love that mug, so much so that when it made a sneak-peek earlier on the blog this week I thought for a split second that it wasn’t a mug at all – very convincing 🙂

  30. Claire @ Health Nut Claire on May 18, 2013 at 1:36 pm

Frozen peas, huh? Gotta try that sometime! That coffee mug is too cool by the way! Where did you find it?

  31. Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian on May 18, 2013 at 2:32 pm

I love that mug! Someone at my office had that one recently and everyone went crazy over it. I also love using veggies as pasta but I really need to invest in a spiralizer or something because what I’m doing now often just comes out as sliced veggies instead.

  32. Lisa on May 18, 2013 at 8:01 pm

I love your lists (and blog). Have a great weekend! 🙂

  33. Michelle on May 19, 2013 at 1:54 am

Let me know what you think of the Bungalow. All I’ll say is that I found it to be pretty predictable. Not quite as intriguing as Blackberry Winter and Violets of March. Still a good read though.

  34. Ciara on May 23, 2013 at 5:10 pm

I just wanted to say I absolutley love your blog. Normally I’m not a blog person but I am in love with yours! It is SO helpful and relatable. 🙂 I am also married to a pilot and a fitness junkie so it’s fun to read stuff that hits so close to home. Keep it up girlie 🙂
