A jog in the rain

Hi friends! Hope you’ve had an amazing weekend <3

Rainbow 1 of 1

Arizona has been hit with a crazy (and much-needed) rainstorm. I have to say, it’s a little more enjoyable indoors than it is running in the pouring rain 😉

Heaters

(Thank goodness for heaters!)

The Pilot and I ventured up to Phoenix to do the Phoenix half marathon together:

Us roadtrippin

We thought it would be a nice getaway and a good “get back in the game” run for my post-injury knee situation. Even though we faced little bit of adversity (said rainstorm blowing sideways at our faces, the angry drunk man yelling outside our hotel in the middle of the night which kept us awake, and soggy socks and shoes for the entire 13.1 miles, just to name a few), we had a blast together. I have to thank the Pilot for motivating me to finish the course, especially around mile 5 when it was really pouring and I saw a Dunkin Donuts in the distance. The thought of hot coffee was very tempting, and I was 100% over running in the rain. I reminded myself of the hot shower I’d get back at the hotel when it was all over, and kept going.

Even though I’d made a killer playlist,

Playlist

I didn’t end up listening to music. The Pilot and I chatted and joked around together. It was a reassuring post-knee injury, tester run (with some walking mixed in) which is good because I’m hoping run the Tucson half at the end of the month. My knee was sore, but it’s ok.

Post-run stretch in the Physical Therapy tent:

Stretch

I’m definitely taking today off to rest, but I’m excited to get back in to my routine this week.

Here’s what the tentative plan looks like:

Sunday: OFF

Monday: Upper body + easy steady state

Tuesday: Lower body and HIIT

Wednesday: Teach Zumba

Thursday: Yoga

Friday: Total body + cardio blitzes

Saturday: Yoga

Some meals we’ll be enjoying:

Grain-free granola bars

Protein muffins

-Chop veggies for salads

-Make smoothie packs

-Make pancakes for Livi

-Make Paleo bread

Paleo bread 1 of 1 4

-Grill chicken breasts for salads and wraps

As far as dinner goes, I’m going to wait and see what inspires me at the grocery store today. I’m excited to check out some new recipes, especially since last week was recipe testing extravaganza 🙂

Are you planning and prepping this week?

Any interesting run or fitness stories lately?

Have a very happy Sunday!
xoxo

Gina

Awesome running news! Congrats on your half!

I took my first RPM class yesterday!! It was a lot harder than I thought, but I absolutely loved it! Unfortunately there is one hour in between this class and my yoga class! I could do them back to back, but there is no way I can hang out for one hour/work out for 3 hours! I think I’ll probably rotate them, and just do yoga one Saturday, RPM the next…

congrats on completing your half marathon 🙂 bummer about the rain, though!

  5. Megan on March 2, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Congrats on finishing your half! That’s awesome after your injury! I’m running my first half in 2 weeks but have not been running lately due to an injury, trying to keep up my cardio and hoping I can still finish! Had you been doing a lot of running before this race?

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 5:06 pm

i didn’t train very well (as usual) because i wanted to take it easy with my knee. i ran 1-2 times per week (hiit and a long run) for the most part, but skipped some weeks here and there

      • Megan on March 2, 2014 at 11:07 pm

That’s great! Thanks for sharing and your playlist, I need to spruce mine up so yours is perfect timing!

  6. Tracy on March 2, 2014 at 1:22 pm

Congrats on finishing! I don’t think I could have done it in the rain….I hate to be wet!! Bet it was good to have the Pilot urging you on!!

    Happy Sunday 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 5:05 pm

if he wasn’t with me, i wouldn’t have even gone to the starting line. i would have decided not to do it the second i saw the rain pout down 😉

  7. Liz on March 2, 2014 at 1:59 pm

    Congrats on your race!

  8. Carrie on March 2, 2014 at 2:14 pm

Congrats on pushing through and finishing your half! I almost always have a moment where I want to quit during a race, but it feels so good not to and to keep going!

Interesting run story happened just this morning. My husband and I did the Arnold Pump & Run (part of the Arnold Classic – bench press and then 5k), but we got a snowstorm that started overnight and will continue through Monday. Therefore, the running portion of the event was in about 3 inches of snow/slush. It felt like running in sand the entire time, but with no beautiful beach to look at haha 😉 Also, the snow was falling at a good clip, so it was pelting us in the face. Needless to say, not great running conditions. But, with the weather we’ve had this winter trying to train for this event, it is par for the course haha. We are just lucky it was 25 degrees outside instead of single digits. And it felt awesome to get done and know I was only about 1:00/1:30 off my normal 5k time. Plus, I got to shake Arnold’s hand before I ran (he always starts the race), so overall, it was actually really fun and laid back. It always feels so good when it’s over, and you made it through 🙂

COngrats on finishing Gina, that is awesome!!
I run the Survivalrun next Sunday, it’s supposed to be warm and dry – and me soaked in mud, haha 🙂 !!

      oh man!

  10. Livi on March 2, 2014 at 4:33 pm

Sounds like it was an awesome race!! So glad you are back out there!

  11. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on March 2, 2014 at 4:45 pm

I heard about all the rain in Phoenix! Major props to finishing race even though it was raining. I HATE running in the rain, especially when it’s windy. Congratulations!

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 5:04 pm

      it was absolutely horrible haha

  12. Farah on March 2, 2014 at 4:46 pm

Congrats on the Half marathon!! And good uck on your next one – I’m sure you’ll be fine 🙂 Question about the paleo bread – Do you modify Elana’s recipe at all or do you follow it exactly as written?

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 5:04 pm

i use almond meal and i stopped measuring things (eyeball it) and it still works 🙂

      • Farah on March 2, 2014 at 5:38 pm

Thanks – been meaning to try it!

  13. Farah on March 2, 2014 at 4:47 pm

Good Luck I meant – not Good ‘uck” …Sorry ’bout the typo!

  14. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on March 2, 2014 at 4:55 pm

Way to go on your run! I could not imagine running that far in the rain!

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 5:09 pm

      it was awful haha

  15. Carrie G on March 2, 2014 at 5:50 pm

Hi Gina! Congrats on the half! Not fun when you’re doing it, but a fun story to tell later. I didn’t get my e-mail for March, think I need to sign up again?

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 6:42 pm

it should work! i have it all ready to go, but they’re going out tomorrow. last time i sent an email over the weekend, i got in trouble with mail chimp because so many bounced back (a lot of my subscribers use their work email, which is set on auto-reply over the weekend). sorry about that!!

  16. Holli on March 2, 2014 at 5:57 pm

I ran the Phx Half this weekend as well and had the exact same thought about quitting when I approached the Dunkin Donuts! Running in the pouring rain was horrible and then the wind picked up! I had to keep telling myself it is impossible to get frostbite when the temp is 59! I will appreciate my sunny runs a little more after that. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 2, 2014 at 6:43 pm

i’m so glad i’m not the only one! ugh, the rain was so rough. congrats to you for pushing through and finishing!

  17. Megan @ TheSkinny-Life on March 2, 2014 at 6:30 pm

I attempted to run on the treadmill this morning, but my foot was screaming at me. It’s not ready even though I’m walking and feeling better. I keep reminding myself it’s on it’s own timeline not mine. Glad to hear your race went well! The rain in Phoenix was well needed, but it was obnoxious. I thought the roof of my house was going to blow off Friday night!

  18. Tricia @ Balance In Progress on March 2, 2014 at 6:33 pm

Definitely planning and prepping this week. Planning is done… Prepping will hopefully be done when I get back from the store. My husband and I are starting a 30 day reset tomorrow so planning and prepping will be vital!
Awesome job running through the rain.

  19. Rhiannon @ Bound to be a Buckeye on March 2, 2014 at 6:36 pm

Congrats on the race! My sis-in-law in Phoenix said she got caught in the downpour and had to head to Target for a back-up shirt! That’s awesome you kept going with coffee in sight =)

  20. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on March 2, 2014 at 7:18 pm

Good for you for finishing your first half marathon post-injury! Running in the rain doesn’t sound like any fun at all. We’ve been fortunate to finally get some much-needed rain here in NorCal lately too. I did enjoy my cloudy-day run on the wet pavement today, though. 🙂

  21. Haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine on March 2, 2014 at 7:18 pm

Holy moly that rainbow is beaaautiful. I’m starting my first half marathon training very, very soon! Eeek! I’m inspired by your dedication, girl!

    • Fitnessista on March 3, 2014 at 10:23 am

  26. Kim on March 3, 2014 at 8:45 am

That’s so cool that you did the race together, I am looking forward to when my baby is older and I can train for one of the Disney races with my husband. It’s great quality time 🙂
