Hi Miss Gina! I’m lovin’ your blog after having just come across it recently. I can SO relate to your story on becoming a personal trainer. I just received my certification in May and am working on making it my career. Thanks for your inspiration!

How does one become a personal trainer? I have always wanted to be a personal trainer and a dietician, but i have had trouble finding out how to do that! I am a college sophomore in engineering right now, but i know i want to work as a personal trainer for a few years because i have this feeling i would enjoy it much more than engineering! Do you have to have a college degree in fitness? Or do you just need a certification?

Ok, lots of questions, sorry : )

I LOVE your blog!! The pics of the salad “beasts” are my fav! I love getting new ideas for meals…my healthy diet gets kind of boring – your blog has seriously helped me get back into it!

Gina, I have taken a few Zumba classes and I love them. I would really love to get my own DVDs, but I have carpet. Do you have any suggestions for this? There are classes in my area and they are five dollars a class, but I’m thinking that if I pay for about 14 classes I may as well buy the dvds. Don’t get me wrong I love working out with other people, I’m just looking at the finances and I guess the carpet too. LOL!!!

i think you’d be ok on the carpet– or buy a cheap rug you could put over the carpet to dance on??

Hi Gina! I love your blog 🙂 You always make me giggle with how you have so much fun with food and exercise. Running is also more of an acquaintance instead of a bff for me as well. I had a quick training question. I’ve lost around 100lbs and I have lots of loose skin in my stomach area. I do at least 45 minutes of cardio 6 days a week (sometimes 5 depending on how I feel) plus I try to do body pump once a week as well as another 30min weight training session. Do you have any suggestions on how I could tighten the loose skin or am I’m going to just have to save moolah for surgery?

    Thank you so much!!

    Hi Gina,
I just discovered your blog after reading about it on rhodeygirltests. I love all your recipes and workouts! I just started doing the summer shapeup from last summer, and I have a question. Does bikram or power yoga qualify as cardio? Sure feels like it, the way my heart races! Thanks!

i would count a faster paced power class as cardio, not so much bikram (more toning and strength even though it definitely gives you cardio benefits!)

    Hi Gina!
I recently started running. I’m really in the baby stages, I am right now running for 1 minute and walking for 1 minute and repeating for 20 minutes. I feel like I’m ready to take it up a notch, but I’m not sure how to proceed. Would I be better off to increase the running time or increase the total time? Or is something else better?

    Thanks for your help!!

    • Fitnessista on May 29, 2010 at 10:12 am

i’d decrease the walking time to 30 seconds and play with that for a while, and then increase your running time to 2 minutes, walk for 1 minute, then taking the walking time down to 30 seconds, and so on. ideally try to get it to where you can run 10 minutes straight, and then do your intervals for the next 10 minutes, bring the intervals down the same way (slowly over the course of many weeks) to the point where you can then run 20 minutes straight 🙂
      you can do it!

    Hey!
So, I’ve been a big fan of your blog and read it religiously everyday 🙂
Since you’re a personal trainer you can probably answer my question. So, I run like 50 miles a week. and do weights about twice a week. and throw in yoga about once and twice as well. I eat about 1,300-1,400 calories a day, mostly organic, and I have not lost a pound and it’s been 4 months. I know I have a thyroid problem. I take my medicine and nothing. Could it be something else you think?

it sounds like you may be under-fueling yourself by not eating enough calories. you need fuel to lose weight and when we don’t get enough, our body will hold onto everything. i’d talk to a doc to make sure nothing else is going on, though
thanks for reading my little blog <3

    Hi Gina!

I recently started following you this past week and I am a huge fan. I am a certified NASM personal trainer and also certified in Yoga as well, but I’m considering getting certification in group instruction. Do you highly recommend AFAA? Do you teach at a small gym or at a large corporation (like Equinox, etc.)? I just moved from Denver, CO and I am in the process of figuring out where I want to settle. I grew up in NJ and I’m in NJ now, but I’m looking for an environment where my business can thrive, but I can also get involved with doing some personal training at local gyms, etc.

Check out my website: http://www.sherocksdenver.com whenever you have a free moment and let me know your thoughts. Again, thank you for your time and advice!

    Have a great day!
    Katie

I realize this is slightly off-topic since this is a personal trainer comment section, but I’ve been in a workout rut for a long time. I was thinking of getting the Insanity workout since I can do it at home. (I’m in college by the way with a high-stress workload, tons of credit hours, etc.) I followed your blog for a while (a lurker) and remembered you doing the Insanity DVDs. Did you like them? Did you feel like they gave you a good workout?

I just want something different and something I can do without driving to the Rec. I always do better with plans and this gives me something structured. I’m choosing between a couple of the Beach Body programs, but Insanity caught my eye because it doesn’t take a lot of extra equipment. So, what did you think of the program? Thanks Gina. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 3, 2011 at 9:36 pm

insanity and turbo fire are my absolute faves. if you have no injuries, i say go for it! turbo is more dance/kickbox based, while insanity is more like a bootcamp style workout. let me know what you decide!

I decided on Insanity. 🙂 Thanks for your feedback Gina!
