Are Fitness Books dead??

Hi guys 🙂 HAPPY FRIDAY!!! Hope you have something fun going on this weekend 🙂

Last night, the girls and I went to McAlister’s and to see Remember Me.

McAlister’s was the standard (veggie chili, minus the usual millet bread from my purse)

chili

R-Patz was standard –acted and dressed like Edward, which was ok with us- and Pierce Brosnan is like a fine wine.

He just gets better and better with age 😉

I know, right?

The thing is, the movie was kind of slow. The girls and I ended up cracking jokes and talking for a lot of it – there were only 4 other girls in the theatre and they were doing the same thing. I liked it, but I didn’t really know what to think when it was over. I say wait until you can rent it.

When I came home to the pilot, we had an interesting discussion about a lot of things, and ended up talking about fitness books and whether they’re still in high demand or dying a slow death.

I get scarily excited when a new fitness book comes out.

When this one came out, I could hardly contain myself:

I’m always on the lookout for new ideas, but with many of this information readily available on the internet, I could see how fitness books could be dying off.

I’m the same way with cookbooks though, and will always buy a new fun cookbook (preferably vegetarian or vegan) when it come out. I could see how these types of books could have more staying power, since many published recipes aren’t available on the web (unless some joker illegally puts it out there).

So I’m wondering what ya’ll think. Are fitness books dead?? Are you more likely to buy a cookbook or a fitness book?

I’m off to work but I’ll see ya this afternoon with foam rolling tips and the physical therapy exercises I’m using to strengthen my knee.

xoxo,

Gina

I love Pierce! And I’m more likely to buy a cookbook. I don’t necessarily cook from recipes all that often, but I do love to look at cookbooks.

  2. Cindy on March 26, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I love to read all books, but especially fitness, diet and cookbooks. Fitness books are very much alive in my world!

  3. Therese on March 26, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I do buy more cookbooks than fitness books, I find that I like to see videos of what the particular exercise is supposed to look like rather than a picture but that’s just me! I’ll keep buying cookbooks though, something about flipping through a cookbook at will to find something to satisfy a craving or to add to a dish that, although is also readily available online (and I do use frequently), is something I love doing!

  4. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on March 26, 2010 at 12:05 pm

I would for sure buy a cookbook over a fitness book but I also know that as easy as it is to get recipes online, people are buying less and less cookbooks.

I think you should write one of each. A cookbook, then a fitness book. Or both at the same time. Both in one book might water down the content of each, if that makes sense.

  6. Michele | aka Raw Juice Girl on March 26, 2010 at 12:14 pm

    Hmmm… I’d say a cookbook – or (un)cookbook. 😉

  7. Gigi on March 26, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Haha! I love that meatphor you used for Pierce! And its so true! Nice choice of words 🙂

  8. Liz on March 26, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I’m definitely more likely to buy a cookbook than a fitness book particularly since I subscribe to fitness magazines and I think you can get a lot of the same content from the magazine websites (if it’s not in the magazine you’re looking at).

  9. Ashlei on March 26, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Definitely prefer cookbooks! I prefer the web for new exercises or magazines!

  10. AmyJoGo on March 26, 2010 at 12:38 pm

I’m convinced that my mother keeps the publishing industry in business. She buys every health/fitness book that strikes her fancy. Same thing with workout infomercials.

  11. Lauren @ Eat, Drink, and Be Hopeful on March 26, 2010 at 12:40 pm

I definitely think fitness books are dead. Come to think of it-I don’t think I ever really bought a fitness book. And even though you can find any recipe online-I think buying a cookbook will always be in style. There is just something about having and owning the cookbook. I dunno-maybe thats just me.

  12. Kilee on March 26, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I think it’s easier to buy fitness or food magazines for $4 than to shell out $20+ for a book. With SO much of the related content on the web nowadays, anyone with some time can research the info themselves. I would rather follow one of your fitness programs than a book or magazine because your advice is more interactive (and awsome!)

I wonder if you could pair a book that could give you all the scientific backing as well as “lifestyle” or theme and then also have a DVD to go along with it to offer a visual of the training. The only fitness books I’ve bought are Yoga books. But now I’m definitely interested in the Women’s Health book!

  14. cali on March 26, 2010 at 1:10 pm

I hope not – because I’m a book editor for a company that publishes fitness, health and cookbooks! http://www.rkpubs.com

  15. Sarah Anne on March 26, 2010 at 1:16 pm

I buy cookbooks and fitness books! I love the web, but there’s nothing like having a book, with pictures, glossy pages and so forth to sink your teeth into. I use coloured flags, post its, arrows etc to denote recipes I want to try, activities I’ve done. I LOVE books. The internet will never replace those for me.

Sometimes, I’ll use the web to suss out the ‘worth’ of a book, but that’s about it. I’ll always go back to my lovely books. Oh – and if a cookbook doesn’t have great pictures, I won’t touch it. I eat with my eyes first obvi. 🙂

I LOVE the REBAR cookbook (veggie restaurant in Victoria, BC Canada) however the way recipes are printed, and lack of colour pages make it just not as easy and fun to use, so I’ll head over to a Dreena Burton book anyday over the Rebar one.

  16. Kalli@fitandfortysomething.com on March 26, 2010 at 1:17 pm

i would probably buy a cokbook over a fitness book but i like both 🙂

  17. Catherine on March 26, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Although I like both, I’m a big fan of incorporating the two – ie. books that speak to overall health and fitness and recipes for say vegan running snacks. I know Brendan Brazier has a good book out there that is along those lines, but I’m yet to get my hands on it!

  18. elizabeth on March 26, 2010 at 1:47 pm

I’ve had that book for a few months now and I really love it. It’s been helping me a lot to make my lifting programs. I will always buy fitness books – there is just something about having all the info in one place rather than having to search all over the net.

  19. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on March 26, 2010 at 1:49 pm

The only fitness book I own is Jillian Michaels’s “Making the Cut” because a friend recommended to me. (it’s an AWESOME book, by the way) Otherwise, I really prefer getting workouts from Fitness magazines or using workout DVD’s… it’s more fun for me to get colorful workouts that way, and have the technique demonstrated for me!

Cookbooks, on the other hand, I love to buy! Probably because, like you mentioned, it’s harder to find published recipes online. I have to hold myself back from buying cookbooks now, because I’m running out of shelf space!! 😀

  20. Lindsey512 on March 26, 2010 at 2:08 pm

I hope they’re not dead, although I have to admit I haven’t bought any recently. I do take them out from the library though. I am probably more likely to buy magazines though.

  21. Paige (Running around Normal) on March 26, 2010 at 2:13 pm

I love fitness books! I sure hope they’re not dead. However, I, like you, depend on them for my (now) job:) gotta keep it fresh!
And I agree with Mama Pea, go ahead and write one of each 😉

  22. Mary @ What's Cookin' with Mary on March 26, 2010 at 2:34 pm

I say cookbook! I have to say though, these days, most of my recipes are found on the internet & saved virtually…

    Happy Friday!

  23. Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) on March 26, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I love fitness books, but I am more likely to buy a cookbook; not only because I am a chef-to-be, but because I read a lot of fitness magazines and they suffice for workouts and such instead of books. But if it’s a particularly good one, I will buy it!

I am all about cookbooks, I don’t really ever shop for fitness books at all. And I hate when I leave a movie not really knowing if I enjoyed it or not…makes it seem not worth going in the first place.

  25. Amy M on March 26, 2010 at 3:11 pm

I buy both. Probably more cookbooks but I do love fitness books as well. I am for sure a sucker for magazines though. I buy Oxygen and Clean Eating everytime they come out.

  26. Sarah on March 26, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Fitness books??? Didn’t know there was such a thing, lol. Guess that answers your question.

  27. eatdrinkandbemerrynyc on March 26, 2010 at 3:32 pm

I just bought “run less, run faster” so i guess not to me 🙂

  28. Kat on March 26, 2010 at 6:03 pm

I love buying new fitness books and cookbooks, esp new cookbooks. I really love having an actual book to flip through and cook from, there is usually a lot more information and like you said some recipes you just can’t find online. Sometimes I do kick myself and think “why am I spending money on things I can find free on the internet.”

  29. Allison @ Food For Healing on March 26, 2010 at 6:24 pm

i definitely like to buy a good recipe or fitness book. the internet is just not the same. Books are so portable and its nice to actually flip through real pages

  30. Dynamics on March 26, 2010 at 10:37 pm

OMG, that is the BEST book AND the price is great!! I really like “books” and will always buy them. I do not think I would ever buy a Kindle either.

  31. Amber on March 27, 2010 at 11:19 am

I would say for the most part, yes. With the internet people find most of their fitness information online. BUT there are people who still read these books on their kindles and iPhones.
The cookbooks have the staying power not only because the recipes aren’t really available online but also because many people (like myself) do not want to bring their computers into the kitchen or run to their desktops while cooking.
I think magazines are a whole different story though. Regardless of their format people will always read them 🙂

  32. Katherine on March 27, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I don’t know about fitness books being dead, but diet books live on forever. Have you ever purchased books detailing diet instructions?
I’ve hopped from Skinny Bitch to Fat Resistant Diet to Thrive.

gina, did you happen to buy the new Giada cookbook yet? She’s one of my faves and I have all of her books. I even went to one of her book signings! her latest book is in the mail on it’s way to my doorstep 😉
