Baby Can Zumba

4 1/2 weeks:

4.5 weeks pregnant

12 1/2 weeks:

12.5 weeks pregnant

There’s a legit baby in there 🙂

ultrasound baby

It was so crazy to go to today’s ultrasound and see a REAL baby. No lentil, no little bean… a baby.

And my experience with today’s ultrasound compared to the one I had almost a month ago: night and day.

No cold jelly (it was warm!), they gave me a lollipop beforehand so I’d have some sugar (which apparently, the baby was a fan of) and the technician was fantastic. So kind and thoroughly explained everything she saw.

The purpose of today’s ultrasound and blood test was for a genetic screening to test for Down Syndrome and anomalies. The test doesn’t detect everything that could possibly be wrong, and there is a higher false positive rate (around 5%). After talking to the Pilot about whether we should forego the test or continue with it (as it’s optional), we decided to just do the ultrasound and no blood test… until we got there. We had a good feeling about it and just decided to go through with the whole test.

The technician measured the back of the baby’s neck, which she described as “textbook” because it was a great example of what normal should look like- it was thin, which is a good indication that Down Syndrome is less likely. The combine the results of the ultrasound with the blood test, to determine a risk factor, which takes about 7 days.

The baby was ROCKING OUT.

Flipping, moving, arms and legs extending and flexing, hands by its face, waving “hi”… it was all over the place. I have no idea where that trait came from 😉 I also LOVED the fact that you could see the little heart beating and the cord pulsing. It was seriously incredible… I can kind of see why Tom Cruise bought an ultrasound machine, so they could see Suri everyday 😉

After the technician left, she came back in the room and said that she had mistakenly spelled my name wrong on the original pictures and asked if she could do it again and take some more so my name would be spelled correctly.

Um, yes please! I could watch that baby dance all day….

She gave us a boatload of pictures.

ultrasound pictures

The baby was still dancing and flipping around, until it turned and faced the machine (which made it look rather alien-like) and looked like it pointed right at us!

ultrasound baby pointing at us

Saying “Hey YOU. Stop interrupting my in-the-womb Zumba party thankyouverymuch

The ultrasound was a great experience (thank goodness) and blood draw hurt like a biotch. They prick your finger and drop blood onto 6 spots on a piece of paper, but the prick is basically like a retractable pen with an ice pick at the end, jabbed into your finger. It shocked me, it hurt so much. The tech was very sweet and we talked about Sally Hansen nail effects while she squeezed my finger to get the sample. The Pilot kept telling me to look away so I wouldn’t faint, haha.

We stopped to pick up some lunch for him to take to work, and it wasn’t until I dropped him off that I had my blubber moment. I made it through two stop lights before I had giant alligator tears rolling down my cheeks… my heart is very full.

<3

Current cravings:

-smoothies! I can’t get enough. I always love smoothies in the summer, but especially now. Throwing in a handful of spinach is an easy way to get some veggies in my life too 🙂

-Fresh organic fruit

-Salsa or marinara, on anything

-ranch dressing (preferably from eegee’s)

-eggs

-goat gouda (I went through 2 blocks last week)

-refried beans- I had refried beans with salsa and eggs for dinner almost every night last week

Aversions:

-Most vegetables, unless your name is potato (white potato, not sweet- so weird!). Good news is that salads are palatable again!

-Chicken and sometimes fish. I have to be in the mood for fish, and it can’t smell the least bit fishy, and have only have had chicken breast once… and then I got sick.

-Soups and most hot foods

So glad the ultrasound went well!!! I had my first ultrasound at 20 weeks and it was so crazy to see an actual baby in there!

  8. Jackie @ MomJovi on June 27, 2011 at 3:33 pm

You and your Zumba baby are adorable. Isn’t it a miracle? Wait until further along and if you decide to do a 4D ultrasound. After having our last around 20 weeks, I couldn’t bear the thought of not seeing our baby girl til 40 weeks, so we did the 4D one with my mom as an early Christmas present for her and it was SO worth the money.

She looked like an honest-to-goodness real baby in there. It made the whole thing really, really REAL, as if the huge stomach and hearing the Doppler heartbeat wasn’t enough!

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 3:34 pm

that is AMAZING. we might have to do that 🙂

  13. Jen @ familyfoodfitnessandfun on June 27, 2011 at 3:35 pm

That is so sweet, love the pics? We had a 4-D ultrasound video made of all our babies in utero! Perhaps you can get that done at 18 weeks?! Glad to hear everything is well 🙂

  14. Laura on June 27, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Aww, I love that your heart is full. 🙂 I’ve never been through any of these experiences, so I can only imagine how incredible it must be to see your little child coming to life. <3

  15. Lauren on June 27, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Love love love it!! Your love shows so much in this post! It’s so exciting! My liitle girl would do flips and yoga moves. One pic she had her leg over her head! We would call her our little yogi! Haha! Congrats on a great ultrasound!

it’s really happening!! so excited!! It’s going to be so gorgeous!

  18. Jen on June 27, 2011 at 3:40 pm

You look amazing! We went through that ultrasound/blood test a few weeks ago and you’re right…it’s really stressful! I’m in week 19 now and I’ll be finding out the sex of the baby this week. YAY! I have the same aversion to sweet potatoes! Weird…I found that I can eat baked sweet potato fries, however. They’re yummy! So, if you want to get the nutrients of the sw. pot., you might want to try them. Enjoy!

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 3:44 pm

ooh i’ll try that because i usually love sweet potato fries

  19. Jess@atasteofconfidence on June 27, 2011 at 3:41 pm

  21. Ashley on June 27, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Total cuteness!!! So glad that everything seems to be going smoothly. 🙂

  22. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on June 27, 2011 at 3:46 pm

oh Gina, I am so happy for you that things look textbook on your ultrasound. I know all those tests that you are recommended to take and do in pregnancy can be SO nerve-racking and I’m thrilled for you that everything looks great.

And there is NOTHING better than seeing your baby on U/S. Well, for me there wasn’t! I loved it so much that I purchased a 3-pass pacakge to a local 4D U/S place. It only cost maybe like $200 out of pocket and I got to go 3 times (over the hospital scans) just to see Skylar. And being that it wasn’t a “medical-related” scan, just a go and see scan, there was nothing anxiety inducing…just pure fun. I LIVED for those visits.

I know some women don’t believe in U/S’s but I loved all mine 🙂

  23. Kilee on June 27, 2011 at 3:47 pm

This is WAY too sweet of a post 🙂 So happy for your little family!

  24. allison @ thesundayflog on June 27, 2011 at 3:47 pm

ahhhhhhh! baby!! a few things – my sister and brother in law bought a heart beat monitor on amazon so they could listen to my niece’s heartbeat anytime they wanted. it’s called angel sounds, i think! just FYI! i see little feets in one of those pics! my niece had the same photo. so cool. and lastly, i’m pretty sure my sister decided to forego the genetic test, JUST BECAUSE, to them, it didn’t matter if the bean had anything wrong with it. it’s not like they would have done anything different. still, i totally see the other side too, who just want to know so they can be prepared. it’s cool to see it from a different perspective. anyways, CONGRATS! love these family posts =)

  25. Amy on June 27, 2011 at 3:48 pm

Was thinking about you today– so glad everything went well! You look wonderful, and your baby is beautiful 🙂 I got to go with my SIL around Christmas-time for a 4D ultrasound, and it was awesome… baby girl was punching & kicking up a storm. What a miracle <3

  28. Avery on June 27, 2011 at 3:59 pm

This is so exciting! So happy for you. Ultrasounds are truly so surreal.. what a blessing that we have the ability to view babies in the womb that way! Crazy.

  29. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on June 27, 2011 at 4:02 pm

What a beautiful baby already!! I’m not surprised he/she is so active =)

You made me tear up again! My heart is full for you too. So, I’ve never been preggers – is your belly hard or soft? Uncomfortable yet? You make one of the most beautiful pregnant women I have ever seen – and I’m not just blowing smoke up your behind. Take care – and thank you for sharing such personal moments.

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 6:16 pm

not that uncomfortable yet- just tired! my belly is hard on the sides and smushy in the middle 🙂
      thank you friend 🙂

  31. Kath on June 27, 2011 at 4:06 pm

    You are curving beautifully!!

Also, I HATE finger sticks!!!! Who was the jackass who invented that method of getting blood from us!? I’d rather have a needle in my arm!

    • Carrie on June 27, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Right!? Your finger throbs for at least three minutes afterward.

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 6:15 pm

seriously! i felt offended afterwards- it hurt WAY more than i expected

  32. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on June 27, 2011 at 4:08 pm

That’s sooo exciting! Sometimes seeing makes all the difference!

I’m getting married in 39 days (not counting or anything 😉 ) and I keep telling my fam how excited I am and although they are excited.. they haven’t been my level of excited. This weekend my mom and I went shopping and she found her dress that shes going to wear and all of the sudden when she was wearing it she got emotional and said “oh my gosh… you’re really getting married” and gave me a big hug! I think sometimes when you start seeing things (like a baby on a ultrasound or trying on an outfit to wear to a wedding) it makes everything so much more *real*.

ps. I realize a baby trumps a wedding but this post made me think the two events were similar in that way! 😉

  33. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on June 27, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Thrilling!!! And not surprising at all that your baby was active, haha. If it’s a girl, she might come out wearing a lulu tank top 🙂

  34. lindsay on June 27, 2011 at 4:09 pm

This whole post is amazing 🙂

PS have you never donated blood?! The finger prick thing is exactly how they do the anemia test and it hurts worse than the actual blood giving for me, haha.

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 6:14 pm

nope, i’ve always been too much of a fainter, but i wish i could

  35. Joelle on June 27, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Already a cutie pie!! Are you going to fin out what you’re having? (you may have already mentioned the answer to this question – sorry if you have). We didn’t find out, amazing experience!! Not like you can return it anyway 😉
I had the same test done (ultrasound and blood) but blood was a regular blood test. Weird.

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 6:14 pm

we’re definitely finding out! i want to SHOP 🙂

So excited for you guys! I feel like such a creeper given the fact that I don’t actually know you, but I can almost imagine how emotional that whole experience was. I can’t wait for my Pilot to experience that with me!

Are you “advanced maternal age”?…hate that term btw haha. I was wondering because you were having all these tests and I honestly thought you were like 27. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 27, 2011 at 6:14 pm

i’m 26 🙂 they offered the test since insurance is covering it and it will give you an extra ultrasound, but i’m lower risk since i’m in my 20s
