BB and Oats

Morning! How are ya? Hope your day has been lovely so far <3

While I was yoga-ing my little heart out last night, the Pilot was doing some of this:

bball

watching the Wilcats dominate last night’s bball game. Tickets are pretty impossible to get, and a friend from work couldn’t go, so he took my little bros with him.

buddies

[Kyle got there a little later]

It’s so cute that they all hang out together 🙂 Every Saturday they have their brother’s breakfast (BB), and last night it was brother’s basketball.

Since he didn’t get home until late, and had eaten hot dogs, nachos and other sporty fare at the game, my dinner was Hayley’s leftover pizza from Friday that was still in the fridge and a hefty dip into the almond butter jar. You know.

This morning, I wrapped myself in a giant blanket, took Bell outside (if our neighbors can see me, they must think I’m so weird because I walk around in our yard in jammies and a furry blanket burrito) and heated up some dark chocolate almond milk:

cocoa

Breakfast was a glorious (and super filling) bowl of oats:

oats

I topped the usual protein oats with a baked apple, which always seems to make an appearance this time of year.

All you do is chop an apple, place it into a glass bowl, spray with the Misto or nonstick spray, top with cinnamon, sweetener of choice, nutmeg and microwave for 2 minutes.

Before:

baked apple

After:

oats (2)

Not only does it make a perfect oat topping, but it’s also really good on waffles, French toast, or by itself as a healthy little sweet treat.

I’m off to run errands, meet my nana for a pedicure date, and then back to the casa to write today’s Family post, plan out a fun recipe project and hit the gym before class tonight.

Hope you have a wonderful day <3

xoxo

Gina

Does your significant other get along well with your family? The Pilot hangs out with my family all time, even when I can’t be there. He’s also the type of guy that would make friends with a random person walking down the street and my family loves everyone, so it works out well.

Mine doesnt get along well with my family (then again, neither do I), but I get along awesomely with his. His mom and I always sit together at football games, talk when he’s asleep…she’s pretty much the bomb.

i read the last two articles about the p.trainers and the diets. Couldn’t help but laugh that Slim Fast was on the list. And ABOVE veganism!?!? crazy!

Aww I love that the Pilot is so close with your family! My boyfriend gets along great with my family, and I get along great with his. His mom and I like to go shopping, and we hang out if Josh has work stuff going on. She was just giving me marriage advice this weekend! ;p

  4. Beth (Well I'll Be) on November 8, 2011 at 11:56 am

What a great, easy way to bake apples! My husband and I are both very blessed in the family department. We have great families that would get along with anyone so both sides are very easy to hang out with!

My Hubby is pretty social and can make friends easily. Though it took some convincing of mi mama y abuela many many years ago, but they came around when they saw how family oriented he is. My uncle’s (who can be very difficult/protective/sarcastic) nicknamed him The Cowboy (since he comes from an area where there are a lot of cowboys, Prunetucky) and truly do approve of him. As I hope since we’ve been married 1.5 years and have been together for just over 7 years.

  6. Sonia (the Mexigarian) on November 8, 2011 at 11:58 am

oh, and I get along great with his family. Love them 😀 We’re both very lucky to have caring families that we are both comfortable with.

  7. Madeline@foodfitnessandfamily on November 8, 2011 at 12:03 pm

My hubs takes awhile to really let people in. He’s the strong silent type until then. But when he does contribute it usually really matters. Haha. Plus we don’t get to see our family often since we are stationed out of AZ right now 🙁

Have to try those baked apples. Yum!

  8. Morgan on November 8, 2011 at 12:06 pm

My BF and my father talk on the phone all the time about sports! They have somehow become besties and it’s the sweetest thing!

  9. Christina on November 8, 2011 at 12:08 pm

My boyfriend gets along great with my family and they love him! However, his sister and I do not get along. She’s such an awful person and I really don’t know what to do. I can see myself marrying him and spending the rest of my life with him, I’m just never sure how to handle the sister situation. So frustrating!

And another note, I’m going to make those apples on put in on top of some french toast right now! Great idea =)

    • Ali on November 8, 2011 at 6:35 pm

      Hi Christina,

I couldn’t help but read your post and felt inclined to respond. I’m sorry about the sister issue. It could go either way. My sister married her husband (and she and his sister did NOT get along at all), but somehow they worked through their issues and are great friends to this day. As for me, well I didn’t realize how much you literally “marry someone’s family.” You just have to weigh the pro’s and cons. As long as you and the boy are on the same page, he sticks up for you and you set boundaries, I think you can make it through anything. Keep your chin up and remember, a positive attitude goes a LONG way. My sister always taught me to “shower” those that dislike me with love and give them no reason to dislike me. It’s worked many times in my life, especially with women 🙂 You can do it girl!

        <3 awesome comment
keep your head up and hang in there! hopefully you'll win her over

    • Emma on November 9, 2011 at 4:24 am

Hi Christina, I unfortunately have the same kind of situation as you do. I agree that it is really awful and frustrating – especially because I do try the tactic of being as kind to her as possible but nothing seems to work. Right now for example, she seems intent on trying to spoil our wedding 🙁 Luckily though, my partner and I are so strong and have enough other family that I don’t think there’s anything that could spoil that for us 🙂 If you ever want to chat to someone about it who knows what it’s like, then feel free to get in touch 🙂

I love apples on oatmeal….so delicious and perfect for fall!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine on November 8, 2011 at 12:13 pm

It’s so sweet that the Pilot is so close to your brothers. I don’t have any brothers, but my BF is really protective of my twin sister. We’re getting engaged soon, and the other day he was like, “since we’re planning to get married, do I get a say in who your sister marries now?” Haha! (She has made some not-so-great boyfriend choices in the past.)

  12. Amanda on November 8, 2011 at 12:23 pm

My husband gets along really well with my family (thankfully!). We met in high school and were just married this fall, but my parents have referred to him as a part of our family for years. 🙂

On the flip side, neither my husband nor I really get along with his parents (our families could not be more different). It’s a bummer, but we’re thankful for the relationships that we have with mine.

  13. Kiran @ KiranTarun.com on November 8, 2011 at 12:25 pm

I love it when brother in law’s have a great relationship – it makes me gush with “awww” all the time 😀

  14. kathleen @ the daily crumb on November 8, 2011 at 12:40 pm

one of the things i am most thankful for in life is that my husbands family and my family all get along. i have two sisters, he has to brothers, an the 6 of us are all super close. our parents are even good friends! it is such a blessing and (makes holidays much easier).

faux-baked (microwaved!) apples are my favorite.

  15. Cait @ Cait hates Cake on November 8, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Pretty sure I couldn’t be with someone who didn’t get along with my family, as I’m very close with them. It’s actually very funny watching my boyfriend with my family – his family is small and mine is huge and crazy with little nieces and nephews and pets running around everywhere. At first I think he was a little shocked by all the chaos, but now he loves it!

  16. Marian on November 8, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I think that’s so wonderful that the Pilot is so close with your family!! I’m super close to my family so it’s really important to me that my future guy is too! And mmm that chocolate almond milk looks delicious- I need to get some!

  18. Amy on November 8, 2011 at 12:58 pm

My DH seems to get along with my family, but my closest relative lives 220 miles furthest a few thousand miles. We don’t see my family very often, every few months we make the drive to see one of my sisters, but we’ve been doing it less and less since we moved to our current location 6 years ago. People rarely come visit us, so we have decided to not make such an effort to go see them. It’s hard for us to travel long distances with an 11 year old on the Autism spectrum, a 2.5 year old and a 7 month old. When they’re older it may get easier, but by then we’ll most likely live very far from family.

My DH has a brother & his father who live in town. He sees them regularly but the children and I don’t. I have suggested it a few times in the past but because of lifestyle choices (illegal behaviors/drug usage) that they have made and continue to make at this point we feel it is best for the children to not be around them.

  19. Mo on November 8, 2011 at 1:03 pm

I still can’t find that darn Almond Milk! Do you microwave or heat it up on the stove top? I’m a fan of Paleo. There’s no one size fits all of course. My brother and husband get along great – and I just love my brother’s wife . . . so whenever we get a chance to hang out, we have a great time. They both play in a local band, so they are one busy couple!

Take care my friend – I go outside in my Uggs and my snuggie when I take the dog out. I pray no one sees me!

That’s so great that the Pilot and your bro have bro dates! I totally agree with you on those baked apples. I have been making mine like that too (minus the Misto because the spices seem to just stick on their own) and topping them with vanilla Greek yogurt. Yumm!

  21. Maria on November 8, 2011 at 1:22 pm

My husband gets along really well with my family! He’s so personable & will talk to anyone, it’s his family that’s the tricky part :-/ But I’m learning as we go along!

  22. Sara @my less serious life on November 8, 2011 at 1:26 pm

i love this idea for ‘baked’ apples. sounds like a great topping for breakfast and a great healthy dessert. i am going to try this soon! thanks!

BB is such a cute idea! My significant other gets along very well with my family, unfortunately he’s stationed 1000 miles away from us right now:( Can’t wait to try that topping for oats tomorrow!

My SO gets along great with my family. My parents absolutely love him and my mom told me that on the way home after they met him for the first time my dad said, “Well. I’m not sure what she saw in anyone else she has ever been with, but I think she finally found the one.” Dads know best, I guess! 🙂

My husband literally walks up to people on the street and makes friends with them. I don’t know how he as the jingles to do it. Especially as he’s American, and we live in Sweden and he doesn’t speak the language. He said hello to a guy outside our grocery store once, turned out he was our neighbour…. and from that person built a huge friend network. My mother LOVES him. My sister ADORES him. My brother is more like me though and it takes a long time for him to warm up to people, but he is showing how he cares in little ways that my husband doesn’t quite see the magnitude of (like baking things just for him). And my husband loves everyone.

I can’t believe some of the diets that are in that article you posted haha. I live by the LCHF diet – low carb, high fat – and it’s changed my life. My stomach, that I had great IBS problems with – is FINE now. My skin is clear. I have so much energy. No cravings for sweets (I am a complete sugar addict. The stories I could tell you are so shameful haha). My calories stay low because the fat is really filling, and my mood is always level because my blood sugars aren’t affected by what I eat. Hurray!

  28. I never thought of just nuking apples in the microwave! They look so delicious and very fall-y 🙂

  29. Allison on November 8, 2011 at 3:55 pm

i love baked apple, i always just have apple and cinnamon, i dont add any sweetner or anything. but it is definitely a perfect topping or addition. I like adding baked apple into my vanilla yogurt, or with granola! yumm

Love that the pilot hangs with your family, even when you’re not there. My bf and my family get along great, especially when sports are involved. They’re all sports fanatics, so if there’s a game on, I can leave them alone together for hours ; )
