Something to talk about: The ā€œfluffā€ in womenā€™s magazines:

mags

Donā€™t get me wrong, I LOVE womenā€™s fitness magazines and celeb gossip, but the amount of fluff you have to skip through is kind of ridiculous. Fitness Mags are full of advertisements for diet pills and fat burning supplements, which I find contradictory when youā€™re trying to educate readers on how to get healthy. ā€œHereā€™s how to lose weight the right wayā€¦ oh, wait, just take this pill instead.ā€ Doesnā€™t make any sense, but on the other hand, they have to pay the bills somehow and fruits and veggies donā€™t have very fierce advertising campaigns. Some of the info in magazines is 100% garbage, too, (ā€œGet a 6-pack in 2 weeks!ā€) so you really have to take everything with a huge grain of sea salt. Anyone else feel the same way?? Which magazines do you read every month? I always get Runners World (even though running and I are seeing other people right now), Womenā€™s Health (Lea Michele is in this monthā€™s!), SELF and Glamour. Iā€™ll occasionally buy Oxygen and Fitness, too šŸ™‚

PS. How stoked is everyone for Sex and the City 2?!? AHHHHHHH

I really need to take my puppers to the groomer, too! Poor baby is looking a little scruffy.

I feel the same way about women’s magazines. They have pretty much the same content year after year with a few updates, new products or fashion advice. They’re always offering some way to look fab in 30 days and sometimes the advertisements completely go against the articles. It’s annoying, but I must admit I still enjoying reading them while doing cardio. šŸ™‚ Right now I subscribe to Self, Real Simple, Health and Shape.

Hi: First time commenting with this burning question… what kind of sports bra(s) do you recommend? I am a “big” girl and can’t seem to find a supportive, seperating the boobs type of bra that doesn’t make me look like I have a big tube in the front!
    Thanks šŸ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 25, 2010 at 9:23 pm

my favorite one is a victoria’s secret shock absorber one and they don’t sell them anymore :/ haven’t found anything as good since but i heard the lululemon tata tamer bra is excellent

  4. Brittany on May 25, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Gina, when you juice- do you cut up all your veggies and fruit or do you just throw them in whole (stems etc & all)? I just bought a juicer and I am confused on how to do it!

    • Fitnessista on May 25, 2010 at 9:35 pm

i usually cut them and core apples and pears. i cut most of the rind of lemon when i juice them, too

      • Brittany on May 26, 2010 at 9:17 am

Thank you so much!! I am off to make my first juice this morning! =)

  5. Christine on May 25, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I’m a magazine junkie so I get a lot of them: US Weekly, In Touch, OK!, Self, Fitness, Shape, Oxygen, Women’s Health, Allure, InStyle, and uhh some others :X oops!

my best friend and I already bought our tickets to see SATC2 saturday! yay šŸ™‚ so excited.

btw yours is the only one left out of my favourite blogs that hasn’t turned into one big ad for an opensky shop :/ I’m REALLY annoyed with all my old favourite blogs to read because every entry is a way to incorporate either all the free stuff they’re given, a sneaky way to hint at items they’d like to be sent to them for free, or advertisement for things they want you to buy in their opensky shop or elsewhere. sigh. thanks for keeping yours, well, yours šŸ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 25, 2010 at 10:21 pm

thanks so much christine- that means A LOT to me, because i really try to keep my blog from becoming a blog-mercial <3 you guys are #1 and it's no fun without you, so i'm going to keep doing my thang and trying to keep ya'll from getting turned off with too much open sky, promos and freebie reviews

    • m on May 26, 2010 at 5:55 am

I completely agree with Christine. I don’t think the other girls “sold out,” but you are definitely seem more interested in keeping your readers happy than trying to turn a profit. It’s the implied begging for free products that rubs me the wrong way, the, “I would love to try products X, Y, and Z, but boooo, I don’t have the money!” Five minutes later, hello product!

  6. Jill on May 25, 2010 at 9:55 pm

I am so hurting from day 2 of summer shape up, tough but felt great when I was done!

Did that juice have 4 carrots, an apple, a beet, and kale? Did you add any stevia or almond milk to it?

    • Fitnessista on May 25, 2010 at 10:18 pm

awesome- glad you had a good workout!
yup, i only used half the beet, though. it was wonderful šŸ™‚

  7. Faith @ LovelyAsCharged on May 25, 2010 at 9:57 pm

I hate how contradictory it is too, but regardless, I’m a huge junkie. I subscribe to Marie Claire, Glamour, Lucky, and Allure, plus I think I’m asking for runner’s world and women’s health for my birthday. And I’m SO ready for SATC to open too! I love that Aidan’s going to be in it, I was always hoping they would end up together…boy do I ever hate Mr. Big!

    • Fitnessista on May 25, 2010 at 10:19 pm

ahhhH! i’m madly in love with mr big… the pilot understands šŸ˜‰

  8. Flappy on May 25, 2010 at 10:13 pm

I have subscribed to Fitness for years and I remember a few years back seeing an influx of fluff. At first I was upset because they cut out alot of the good stuff for these ads, but now I just look past them and dig down for the meat and bones of the magazine. Actually I just found your blog today on their website..hehe. Glad I found this, I’m really enjoying it, keep up the good work šŸ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 25, 2010 at 10:18 pm

hahah they definitely do good things too šŸ™‚
welcome to the little blog! <3

  9. Krystina on May 25, 2010 at 10:25 pm

    This post was adorable.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR SATC2!! But I have no one to go with because I haven’t made any female friends in O-town yet. šŸ™

  10. Melanie@ I Dream of Tahini on May 25, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Your puppies are just the cutest!! I still haven’t tried one of the breakfast cookies, even though I’ve been saying I was going to forever. I need to do that ASAP.

  11. Emily @ Emilyeatsclean on May 25, 2010 at 10:58 pm

That’s always been one of my pet peeves with fitness/health magazines. I never understood why they pushed the healthy eating and exercising routine as the best way to get and maintain results, but then advirtised diet pills. That’s soooo frustrating!!!

  12. Evelyn @ cheers2healthy on May 25, 2010 at 11:41 pm

I’m loving the Summer Shape Up so far! Do you think you can you post a link to this week’s workouts at the end of your posts? It’s easier to navigate šŸ˜€

  13. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on May 25, 2010 at 11:52 pm

I used to get them all, now I only get Women’s Health (I won a subscription). The funny thing is everyone told me about all the supplements I would have to buy to compete…which are what makes up all those ads in those mags. And I havent ever taken a single supplement. And I use maybe 1 scoop of Sun Warrior, per week! And so all that whey protein and supp’s and 6-pack in 2 weeks….not for me šŸ™‚ There are no shortcuts, hard work: eat clean, lift, rest, repeat. Anything else is just Fluff, for sure šŸ™‚

  14. Susan @ Journey for Health on May 26, 2010 at 12:04 am

Your pupper Bella looks exactly like a dog I used to have named Coco. Even the before and after pics look just like he did. It is uncanny šŸ™‚

And I agree about the fluff and needless garbage in lots of fitness magazines. Sometimes it really makes me reconsider buying the magazine. I mean, how can a magazine that promotes good health also include diet pills? It’s annoying sometimes, but if I like the magazine otherwise, I try to overlook it.

    • Susan @ Journey for Health on May 26, 2010 at 12:06 am

      Oh, and I usually read:

      Natural Health
      Yoga Journal
      Runner’s World
      Outside

and sometimes SELF, Oxygen, Fitness, and other yoga-like mags

  15. Hayley on May 26, 2010 at 12:19 am

Not a fitness mag, and I don’t even subscribe to it, but Cosmopolitan recently included a page of cut-out shapes for shaving lady areas. THAT was hands down the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in a magazine.

  16. jassy on May 26, 2010 at 12:55 am

    i’m excited for satc2=)

  17. Annie D. from Annie's Simple Life on May 26, 2010 at 6:53 am

You know, I really need to start juicing. That looks sooooo yum!

Those fitness mags drive me crayyyzeeee! I hate when they push pills and those ‘get slim quick’ 800 calorie diets. YIKES. Why can’t people just lose weight the healthy way? The world has gotten too impatient. Microwave mentality- it’ll fry your brain.

  18. Roro on May 26, 2010 at 6:58 am

My opinion about the Diet pills is that it doesn’t work for Everyone but they did for ME because I couldn’t loss any weight at all no matter what I did for a WHOLE YEAR. I changed my food plan, worked out everythingso I decided to try them, prescribed by my doctor which they helped me get started, I haven’t lost a ton of weight because I choose not to be depended on them. I’m happy with the progress since taking them

  19. gigi on May 26, 2010 at 7:48 am

Hi I’m kinda new here, I love your blog!
I love magazines especially when I’m doing cardio. Muscle and Fitness Hers is my favorite, they have great workouts in there. I like Oxygen too but sometimes it feels like they are just trying to sell Tosca Reno’s Clean Eating books. I don’t care too much about the ads, like you said they have to pay their bills. I also like Cooking Light and Instyle!

  20. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on May 26, 2010 at 8:45 am

I work in the magazine industry, so the ads don’t bother me. It’s the only thing that pays the bills and allows the magazine to come out each month. (Money from subscriptions isn’t usually enough to mean anything. The reason they care about subscription is that more readers means more advertisers will want to advertise in the magazine.) I also feel like while there are some pretty dumb ads, people are smart enough to know that the magazine’s editors don’t endorse those things.

  21. Ashley (whole-ier) on May 26, 2010 at 8:59 am

I feel the same way about the magazines- “10 snack foods that help you lose weight”- what the heck?

Also- it annoys me Kim Kardashian is on the cover of June Shape magazine. Doesn’t she promote diet pills? Maybe her pills and the 10 snacks I’ll get my “6 pack abs in 2 weeks!”

  22. Kristie S on May 26, 2010 at 9:02 am

I always read my subscriptions to Oxygen, Runner’s World, Clean Eating and if I get around to it Self, & Fitness. But I do wish there was more information and less fluff!

  23. Jessica on May 26, 2010 at 9:04 am

I hardly notice the ‘fluff’ in the magazines. I think I’ll start paying more attention.
I can’t wait for the movie! Going next week!

  24. Naomi (onefitfoodie) on May 26, 2010 at 9:26 am

i really dont understand why oxygen magazines whre they stress healthy lifestyle and working out etc have diet pills on every other page? I never really understood that! i do realize that maybe some fitness competitors use supplements, but so many diet pills on every page its unneccesary and furthermore sends the wrong message!!

this ‘core cardio and balance’ during my recovery week is hardly recovery haha, I am feeling it! those shouder burners and hip flexor burners are BANANAS!!!

  25. Kelly @ Kelly B Well on May 26, 2010 at 10:32 am

I subscribe to Oxygen, Women’s Health, and Muscle & Fitness Hers (because I focus on strength training a lot).
I agree with you on the ads, though — Oxygen and Muscle & Fitness are full of fat burner/supplement ads and it drives me nuts! Why don’t they promote things like vega products instead?!

  26. Alycia @ Fit n Fresh on May 26, 2010 at 2:09 pm

I totally agree with you about the fluff in magazines – I feel the same why about Jillian Michaels! I had so much respect for her until she started coming out with diet pills and detox juices. So sad. I do enjoy your reviews on products though and I don’t see that as selling out, just as being informative because I always like to know what someone ELSE thinks about something before I waste my money on it and it sucks lol

Magazine-wise, I get runner’s world, shape, fitness, women’s health, glamour and lucky! (I’m a bit of a mag addict ha)

  27. Bree on May 26, 2010 at 2:29 pm

I don’t buy many Women’s magazines anymore. Occasionally I will flip through Women’s Health, but a lot of the traditional women’s marketed mags (Cosmo, Glamour, People etc) have pretty lame fitness and nutrition advice that seems to be rehashed. I get much better, more sound advice from blogs like yours and other fitness/nutrition professionals I follow šŸ™‚

  28. Cindy on May 26, 2010 at 3:03 pm

A friend just gave me a juicer. I just juiced my first time. haha I used apple, lemon, ginger, kale, romaine. It tastes spicy and so delicious! I had to tell someone…:)

  29. denise on May 26, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Do you cook and or peel the beet before you add it to your juice? I’m pretty sure yours is raw, but I want to make sure before I try it for myself šŸ˜‰

    Must.Get.Back.To.Juicing.

    • Fitnessista on May 26, 2010 at 3:43 pm

yup, it’s raw, i just washed it and cut it in half šŸ™‚

  30. Jessica on May 27, 2010 at 12:38 am

    Ahh I LOVE Gaga’s Alejando song!! It’s a new fave šŸ™‚
And I love that picture of mr. edward cullen himself–just finished reading Eclipse and i’ve become the biggest twilight nerd evahh!
Also so glad you brought up the whole women’s mag deal….I get so sick of the fluff but I also love reading them regardless! I just know what to NOT pay attention to, so it works out! šŸ˜‰

Anddd lastly, the bfast cookie looks amazing! Speaking of, I think I may have to go grab myself some chocolate right now….

  31. Amir Thompson on June 6, 2010 at 12:04 am

That tune is totally amazing, and I’m not really into that kind of music! I enjoy listening to it!
