Blanco

Did you know that if you have red sangria on a Wednesday, it automatically makes the rest of the week so much better?

sangria

It is true.

The Pilot played hooky today 😉 He took a day of leave so I could go to the dentist (and then couldn’t get an appointment). He still has 90-something days of leave, and if you don’t use it, ya lose it, so we got to spend the day together. If only he could just take three months off starting now… but it doesn’t quite work that way.

A highlight of the day: a little late lunch/early dinner date at Blanco.

Chips, salsa, guac

Grilled chipotle shrimp tacos

A couple bites of tres leches cake

tres leches

enjoyed with our favorite little sidekick.

(and the Pilot’s mustache)

Speaking of mustaches, how’s your March going?

I went back through the Marvelous March list to see how I’m doing:

Try a new St. Patty’s Day recipe. I didn’t end up doing this one, but I was the happy taste tester for the madre’s lime gluten-free cupcakes.

-Create your own luck. This one was pretty easy since I decided to revisit an old project that fell by the wayside. I’m taking my time to get back into it, but it feels good to take another look at things with fresh eyes.

-One green meal a day. I’ve gotten so much better at this and am pretty much back to my usual eats. Vegetables like cray over here 🙂 The thing that seemed to help the most was making Sunday a prep day: buying groceries for the entire week, chopping everything, boiling grains and pre-making some salads. Green smoothies are back, too 🙂

Go for gold! Gold fingernails

Plan a picnic. Not yet, but it’s supposed to be 80 again this weekend, so that might be an excellent plan.

Start a March Madness bracket with a friend. No.. when the cats are out, basketball goes on the list with the all the other sports I don’t seem to care much about.

Encourage (or discourage? haha) Mustache March. Everyday I make a random comment about the Pilot’s ‘stache.. and his van filled with candy.

Take your workout outside. Lots of Sabino Canyon trips lately! The weather has been gorgeous (oh yeah, minus the one day that it SNOWED), and it’s a fun little outing for the whole fam.

Get tatted up? Not yet, but when the Street Fair comes, there’s a henna lotus tattoo with my name on it 😉

What have you done this month that you’re proud of? Something you’re looking forward to?

Favorite Mexican food libation? Sangria is #1, horchata is a close second.

See ya in the morning with a spring playlist!

xoxo

Wow – your food eats look so good today. I did NOT know that about red sangria so I’ll have to keep that in mind for next week!! 🙂

your one-green-meal-a-day challenge has really helped me get back to my pre-baby way of eating. when i was nursing i was struggling to eat enough so i developed terrible eating habits (and somehow lost a ton of weight). i stopped about 5 months ago and it has been hard to get back to clean eating so my weight has slowly crept up. this little challenge came just in time for bathing suit season too 😉 thanks!!

Love red sangrias, I have started having green monster smoothies every morning and I love them. I also tried almond milk and love it, I was afraid to try it because I don’t like almonds!

About Green Meals: As my nutrition studies progress I’m really getting the importance of veges, and the more I focus on them, the better I feel. Just getting those minerals in is sooo important. My brain works better that way.

About Sangria: Haha… Oh god, the memories – in Barcelona they seem to serve Sangria Cava (same thing? not sure.. it looks the same) in a glass that is approximately the size of a bucket. It’s like a giant brandy glass. Enormo.

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 1:01 am

Definitely a margarita. My favorite is just silver tequila, fresh lime juice and agave.

I’ve never had horchata! I’ve definitely wanted to try it, though.

This month I have gotten back into TurboFire 6 days a week, and feeling great. Seriously, I can’t thank you enough for bringing Chalene into my life- she’s kind of a rock start and the results are fab.

Guacamole & sangria are definitely my 2 fave Mexican treats….I don’t get mad at sopapillas either…just sayin 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 1:01 pm

chalene is ridiculous. i’m so glad you love turbo!

Did you really go to Blanco’s (one of my faves) and literally order the *my* meal?

I feel like Blanco’s cheated on me.

Yoga Vida has a 30 day challenge 🙂 when you have a stable schedule, if you’re still into it, check it out!!!!

This month has just been focusing on my yoga instructor training and final seminar. I’m sore from doing so much yoga — my ribs are screaming at me. I can’t wait for March to end, my husband is doing the mustache too. ick.

Liv is as adorable as ever!

  27. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on March 22, 2012 at 8:13 am

Would that old project you’re working on happen to be your book proposal? If so, good luck with it! 😀

This month I’m proud of setting a new 4 mile PR!

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 12:59 pm

      congrats on the new pr!
not quite- there’s something else i’ve been wanting to get into 🙂

  28. Courtney on March 22, 2012 at 8:21 am

Haha the Pilot’s mustache cracks me up every time! Gina, what kind of heart rate monitor do you use? I had a Reebok one I loved but it broke… just ordered a Timex one and the calorie burned count was WAY high so I returned it. Just trying to look into more options! Thanks!!

I am getting back into healthy eats and my workout regimen after a back injury. It’s been rough getting up early and working 10 or so hours, but I’ve managed to do a much better job!

  32. Nicole on March 22, 2012 at 9:14 am

The thing I’m most proud of today is that I went back to the gym today after slacking off for the past few weeks!

I had tres leches cake for the first time in December and oh my was it ever good!!

  33. Vanessa N on March 22, 2012 at 9:23 am

Ha! With the mustache and aviator shades, your husband looks like he could be on Reno 911. That is awesome.

Sangria any day of the week makes everything all better.

Something I’m proud of this month: getting in my first road bike ride of the year… this is unusual for a New Englander b/c the roads are usually still covered with snow in March – but we had pretty much no snow this year and it will be in the 80s today – so weird… and so wonderful.

  34. Lyndzie @ fashionable footprints on March 22, 2012 at 9:36 am

I could go for some Sangria right about now …

  35. Andrea P on March 22, 2012 at 9:46 am

That dinner looks delish! Have you ever tried blanco sangria? I tried one at a cuban restaurant, definitely my favorite drink..they go down way too easily 😉

The month of March has been packed with wedding planning, something that definitely takes time but something I’m also super proud of doing on my own 🙂

P.S. Those fish tacos look heavenly, I haven’t any in so long, my mouth is now watering…

  37. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on March 22, 2012 at 10:00 am

That’s interesting : here the mustache month is November and the goal is to donate to the prostate cancer reseach.

  40. Jenn on March 22, 2012 at 11:00 am

bahahahaha … and his van filled with candy! Reminds me of one night we were all out and my boyfriend showed up with a mustache and I said I couldn’t hang out with him because he looked like a kidnapper… then he offered me candy

  41. Jenny on March 22, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Hey Gina. I know you are nursing so do you pump and discard the milk or do anything different after you consume alcohol? I always thought it was off limits for nursing?

    • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 2:25 pm

My midwife said you can have one drink and that’s fine. I have one drink per week, usually red wine. Your body processes the alcohol and nursing is different than the direct nutrients from the placenta- breastfeeding filters some stuff out

      • Jenny on March 23, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Thanks!! Just had my daughter and plan on nursing again. Thanks for the advise!

        • Fitnessista on March 23, 2012 at 12:57 pm

no prob. definitely double-check with your doc or midwife 🙂

  42. Virginia on March 23, 2012 at 6:21 pm

Horchata!! My abuelita makes the best horchata in the world 🙂 That sangria looks amazing!
