Brother’s Breakfast

Hey, everybody! This is the Pilot filling in for my lovely bride who has to teach fitness classes much later today (I figured she could use a break in the middle of 7 aerobic / stretch classes).

Hope you’re enjoying your Saturday. As you’ve probably read, today’s usually my down day when I regroup from dealing with the grind of the work week. Since Gina works through mid-afternoon on Saturdays, I use today as a chance to catch up with my brothers-in-law.

Brother's Breakfast 2

For the past few months since I’ve been in Tucson, we’ve met for b-fast almost every Saturday for a little bro bonding (we actually invite the whole fam, but they’re rarely available Sat morning: lame).  Our initial goal was to try every breakfast place in Tucson like Alice’s (a great little greasy spoon):

Alice's

Despite our lofty goal, we got a little stuck along the way and ended up going to the same delicious place several weeks in a row.

Millie's Pancake House

Millie’s Pancake House…Epic

Brother's Breakfast 1

The interior looks like a typical grandparents house, and it usually has it’s fair share of grandparent-esc people there. That’s a good sign – most older folks don’t mess around with so-so food and slow service 😉 Anyway, my bros and I have ordered a variety of different meals but there’s always one item that remains as a staple. The Belgian waffle topped with rich vanilla ice cream and strawberries.

Belgian Waffle 1 This one isn’t Millie’s but you get the idea. Source

Not exactly a Fitnessista meal, but we split it and once a week can’t be that bad…right? Hopefully, this tradition will be around for a while. Do you guys have any event that’s a tradition for your family outside of the holidays?? For you guys with kids, did the little ones add or take away from these kinds of things?

Well, this is a fitness blog, so I’ll give a shout out to my good friend, Jeff, who’s visiting Tucson to run the Mount Lemon Marathon this weekend. He was one of my AF ROTC instructors in college that mentored a lot of us to safely push our limits when it came to staying in shape. I’ve ran the Blue Angel and Bataan Death March Memorial Marathon with him, and kind of bums me out that I didn’t plan in advance to get in tip top shape and give this one a shot. It’s good motivation to get out there a little in general, though. Maybe I’ll miss a couple football games in exchange for a short run. I think I’ll keep the waffle tradition in there, though 😉

Hope you all have a great rest of your weekend!

Cheers,

The Pilot

I love this idea. My dad and I try to have “Sunday Dinner” every week, which is a fun little tradition, but I like the brunch idea, too!

I love that you bond with your BIL’s, super sweet!

We always love hearing from The Pilot! Our little family started a tradition of having breakfast on Sunday morning (before all the football pre-game shows and after my husband does whatever to his fantasy rosters). Hope G takes it easy after work! Have a great weekend, guys!

That sounds like a fun tradition. Have you guys been to the Blue Willow yet? I used to love eating there.

My husband and I used to do Sunday breakfast out, after our long runs and rides on Saturday. With an 18 month old toddler it is much easier to stay in but we still manage to sit at the table and have a big family breakfast together.

That’s awesome that you’re so close with your in-laws! Do you have any siblings of your own? My husband and I want to do the Bataan Death March Memorial Marathon one of these years. A few years ago, our base got a whole team of people to go down & do it and I hear it was a pretty cool experience!

That’s so cute that you spend time with the brother in laws! On the weekends I don’t actually have a set routine but I definitely do a bit of splurging 🙂 Good luck to your friend running the marathon!

That tradition is awesome! I hope I can have something like that with my future in laws! 🙂

Pilot guest posts are always appreciated, especially when he’s pictured representing this nation’s greatest football team. But I’m not biased or anything. (No, really, this Bama girl squealed aloud and showed everyone at her house this post. They’re all, wait, who’s this person again? Gina’s husband? Who’s Gina? They just don’t know about this best corner of the internet.)

Saturdays (during football season, at least) around here start around 9am with College Gameday, and our friends are generally over the entire day. I cook a random assortment of things; today has been whole wheat pancakes, spicy Asian veggies with rice, and pasta with garlic and bell peppers. And sweet tea. Lots and lots of sweet tea.

Growing up my Dad (an F-16 pilot) used to take my brother out for a haircut and breakfast at a greasy spoon once a month. It was their “thing” and I always begged to go- but nope, it was their guy time. (Don’t worry, my Mom used the time to do stuff with me one-on-one, I just really wanted hash browns, ha). My brother has a little boy now…and once a month he and his son and my Dad go for a haircut and breakfast at a greasy spoon. It makes my Dad so happy that his “thing” was so memorable to my brother, and now the three of them sharing it is pretty cool.

Hey, Mr. Pilot! Love your post, as always – so sweet that you fill in for Gina when she needs a break! And of course, it’s so fun to hear from the other perspective. That waffle is just plain out amazing. And I’m craving ice cream now. That’s great that you and your in-laws have this tradition. I need to start one up again with my besties. 🙂

When I lived in Tucson with my AF hubby, we went to Armitage for Brunch. It was AWESOME, but it may be too high brow for a bro date. Maybe go for a brunch date after the market tomorrow 🙂 so I can live vicariously through the blog post that would follow…..

    • Fitnessista on October 22, 2011 at 9:59 pm

i love that idea!! do they have weekday breakfast/brunch or just sunday?

      • Negar on October 23, 2011 at 1:02 pm

Sorry about the delay in answering, I live in NYC now and was in the middle of an amazing food coma from a Brussel Sprout and Pancetta pizza….and maybe too much Italian beer 🙂

Armitage only had Brunch on Sundays (not even Saturdays were included) when I was there (**cough cough** last month).

Yeah I act like I haven’t lived in Tucson in ages, but I am literally fresh off the boat here in the city.

  25. Brittany on October 22, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Love guest posts from the Pilot! 🙂 You guys are so cute, I can’t even stand it.

  26. Ali on October 23, 2011 at 12:32 am

Haha, aw Pilot! I used to eat waffles every weekend too! I would make them special for myself every single weekend. Hope you do have some fun getting into tip top shape soon to!

  27. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on October 23, 2011 at 8:12 am

If I found a place that served waffles like that, I would never eat anywhere else again either. Who can say no to ice cream for breakfast? 😀

  28. Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) on October 23, 2011 at 12:24 pm

Pilot posts are always so cute! I love that he’s so close w your fam, too.. I would love that when I eventually get married.

  29. Diane on October 23, 2011 at 9:19 pm

Great post! You should write more guest posts!! Maybe you can write some for Gina once the baby comes – she’ll probably appreciate a break from writing 🙂

Hi Pilot- always great to hear from you! Random question…when you were deployed, were there any specific items you REALLY liked getting in the mail from home? My friend is leaving on deployment next week and I want to get some nice care packages lined up for him, but I have no prior experience with what’s best to send. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer!
