Coffee surprise

Hey guys! I LOVED this morning’s discussion about the Paleo diet. I had a feeling it might be controversial because it seems to be a love it or hate it kinda thing, but way to be respectful of each other while voicing your opinions. You’re a classy bunch, so I wouldn’t expect anything less 😉

So, is it sad that I judge the coolness factor of a city by the latte milk options available?

best coffee ever

Don’t answer that.

If you live in a city where they offer almond and hemp milk everywhere you go, you win. Buuuuut Tucson just got a lot more exciting! We have ALMOND MILK. Not at Starbuck’s, but at Coffee Exchange. I went up to the barista and asked if they had almond milk (I always ask, even if I think they don’t… this way, at least they know it’s in demand) and he said “yeah I just picked some up this morning.”

Say whaaaaaa?!

Starbucks, you are dead to me.

Actually Starbucks is awesome because I met my husband there, but you know what I mean 😉

I enjoyed my iced decaf almond milk vanilla latte with some fabulous company:

elyse and liv

Elyse and I used to work at the dance studio together back in the day, and today was her first time meeting Livi. It was amazing to catch up with her, and after coffee, we went to Target to walk around, since we both had to stop there on the way home anyway.

Some recent eats:

This morning’s blueberry breakfast cookie

bfast cookie4

Lots of zucchini chips out of the dehydrator

zucchini chips

(just slice and dehydrate overnight)

Protein oats

oats w berries

(with almond milk, Sun Warrior, almond butter and strawberries)

Chicken burger with sweet potato fries and zucchini

chicken burger

The Pilot just opened a bag of chips, a jar of salsa and a bottle of wine, so I’m gonna go join him 🙂

Hope you’re having a great night!

See ya tomorrow with a Family post and St. Patrick’s Day workout <3

xoxo

Gina

Something to do: Schweaty March Workout! I did it last night, minus the intervals and just threw one Tabata round in at the end. If you’re crunched for time, you can just do the weights portion for an awesome full-body workout.

Darn that’s one cute Livi! And yay Almond milk! Now if only I wasn’t allergic to tree nuts. Drat.

  2. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on March 16, 2012 at 12:48 am

I really wish Starbucks would just jump on the almond milk bandwagon already! Although maybe they shouldn’t, my bank account would be looking a lot more empty…

  3. Averie @ Averie Cooks on March 16, 2012 at 12:58 am

I love the bowl your strawberry oats are in…so cute!

And doens’t Liv just look tooooo cute in your friend’s arms. Glad you girls were all able to meet up and spend some time catching up. Reuniting with old friends is always awesome.

I find weird ways to judge a city’s coolness, too. Can you believe that West Los Angeles doesn’t have a Target? I have to drive at least 15-20 minutes to get to one! Livi is seriously adorable – she looks like she does well with new people! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 1:31 am

i was convinced valdosta wasn’t a real city because it didn’t have an olive garden, haha

      • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 1:31 am

and thank you! yes, she loves seeing friends and family 🙂

        • Lisa on March 16, 2012 at 9:12 pm

We have an olive garden now, but i was not impressed. Long wait, out of seafood entree & worst of all brought me white zin, instead of red.

          • Fitnessista on March 17, 2012 at 12:24 am

            no way!!
please come to tucson already. that is all.

  5. Jaclyn on March 16, 2012 at 1:52 am

that’s awesome that they have that! whole foods does, of course, and seattle is pretty vegan/different sytle of eating friendly, so most places do, but not my fave place, I’m afraid… but I agree – starbucks needs to jump on that bandwagon!

i just love “watching” livi grow up! It’s so crazy to me that she’s just two months old but already looks so much like you – ad a lot like Tom too I think ! beautiful baby you guys made there, fo sho <3

    Happy Friday!

  6. j3nn on March 16, 2012 at 1:54 am

I was going to make dehydrator zucchini chips today. Tomorrow: For sure! 🙂

  7. Katie O on March 16, 2012 at 2:22 am

OH… Livi gets cuter every time you post a picture!

What are your favorite things to put in the dehydrator? I just found one buried in our house (my husband acquired it somewhere along the line, i guess!) and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with it since we have it!

  8. Emily on March 16, 2012 at 3:04 am

    Livi is so gorgeous!
I am always happy to hear when more cafes start offering almond milk etc. It’s still not mainstream where I am, but local stores have started carrying fresh almond milk in their refrigerated sections (amongst other wonderful things) so it looks like it will become the norm further down the line!

  9. Joss on March 16, 2012 at 6:47 am

That’s good that you have almond milk to choose from now 😀 I usually just get regular milk..but I do believe some places around here have almond milk, soy milk etc!

  10. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on March 16, 2012 at 7:22 am

Thats awesome that that local coffee shop is serving almond milk! Just goes to show how the health movement is changing the world! Businesses are starting to figure out what consumers want!

  11. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on March 16, 2012 at 8:18 am

Yay for almond milk! I get really excited about things like that too – I was the same way when I discovered Starbucks started carrying Liberte Greek yogurt in its snack section!

  12. Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon on March 16, 2012 at 8:39 am

Almond milk at a coffee joint!!! I’ve never seen that! But then again, seeing as I’m a black coffee kind of gal, I guess I’ve never really looked…

  13. Chelsa on March 16, 2012 at 8:45 am

I would love it if Starbucks would even just carry unsweet soy milk. I can’t do the dairy milk but I also don’t like a load of sugar in their soy. When will they learn??

  14. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on March 16, 2012 at 9:26 am

Aww I love that picture of Livi! I hope your coffee shops start to get more milk options. I definitely don’t live in a cool city, we’re lucky to even have a Starbucks! ;p

  15. Maria on March 16, 2012 at 9:29 am

Hi Gina! Would have commented on the Paleo post, but was afraid that my question would get lost in the mass, so here it comes: You have previously stated that you have followed the South Beach diet, but do you have a post where you go in to detail about it, like you did with the Paleo post? If not, you should make one 🙂

    Have a nice day!

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:15 pm

i will do that next week 🙂

      • Maria on March 17, 2012 at 5:51 am

Awesome, I’ll be looking forward to reading it very much! 🙂

  16. Christina on March 16, 2012 at 9:34 am

Livi is so precious…you are so blessed!

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:15 pm

thank you, we are very blessed <3

  17. Sara on March 16, 2012 at 9:56 am

I’m an almond milk fan too – love it in cereal, smoothies, etc. But I understand why starbucks and other coffee places don’t carry it. Honestly, I think it gives coffee an “off” aftertaste and it doesn’t foam well in lattes, etc. I tried to use it my espresso machine and I’ve had to switch back to soy.

  18. Kelly @ Vegolosophy on March 16, 2012 at 10:16 am

I totally feel you on the milk and coffee shops haha! Being that I am lactose intolerant I DEFINITELY look for coffee shops that carry different milks! Luckily I live in NYC so many of them do, yay!!!! Enjoy your Friday!

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:14 pm

you live in the land of almond milk ICE CREAM. i live in jealousy 😉

  19. Becky @ TheBexFactor.com on March 16, 2012 at 10:17 am

One of the little independent coffee shops here (it’s actually a transformed double decker bus) used coconut milk!! That makes me love them so much!

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:13 pm

      dude.

  20. Caroline @ After Dinner Dance on March 16, 2012 at 10:33 am

Do you know if you can make zucchini chips without a dehydrator? Can you just leave them in the oven at a low heat for a while?

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:12 pm

yep- on the lowest setting with the door slightly ajar

  21. Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves on March 16, 2012 at 10:41 am

I wish somewhere around me made almond milk lattes. Although, then I would probably spend all my money in coffee shops. I have been wanting a dehydrator. What kind do you have or recommend?

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:13 pm

i have the excalibur 9 tray and love it

  22. Negar M on March 16, 2012 at 10:54 am

I didn’t know coffee xchange had almond milk! I spent many nights working on group projects there till 2 or 3. Of course I wasn’t drinking coffee anyway, because I would race home to sleep as soon as I was done (and I was always almost done).

I judge a city’s coolness by the quality of things to do between 10pm and midnight.

So far, Tokyo wins. By a landslide.

Tucson wins in terms of comfie lifestyle though (no fighting while commuting on the subway, laying out in the sun mid-march, a lot of businesses have a business casual environment, indoor malls for air conditioning, nice outdoor trails, lots of big houses and apartments…..wait, why did I move?)

  23. Claire on March 16, 2012 at 11:14 am

I totally judge cities on if they have milk varieties too! I live in Seattle, and they have EVERYTHING! Not at Starbucks (well, some do), but not the one I go to. There are PLENTY of coffee shops here, after alll, this is where Starbucks started! I’m right with you on the milk choices. I usually opt for coconut milk or rice milk in coffee. The texture is great!

  24. Meredith on March 16, 2012 at 11:54 am

Love the pics of Livi 🙂 She is such an alert and beautiful baby. She kind of resembles Jessica Alba in that picture (gorgeous!) 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 16, 2012 at 4:11 pm

thank you! yes, it amazes me how alert she is.. she’s always looking around and taking everything in 🙂 she’s amazing

  25. Andrea @ Vegvacious on March 16, 2012 at 12:56 pm

I can never find places that serve almond milk but I’m going to make a point of asking more often!

  26. Joanna on March 16, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Im hoping Starbucks jumps on the bandwagon too. Gina, have you ever done a post on dehydrators? I’ve been interested in more raw foods and was thinking of getting one. Any advice?

  27. Aubrey on March 16, 2012 at 1:39 pm

I grew up in Tucson, elementary through high school. My friends and I would hang out on the patio of the Tanque Verde location. We thought we were very grown up drinking overly sweetened mochas and walking across the street to eegee’s. When I visit my dad, I’ll have to make sure I stop in and get an iced coffee with a splash of almond milk.

  28. Life's a Bowl on March 16, 2012 at 1:54 pm

I am gonna try a gluten-free diet next week in hopes that it will help with all the digestive issues I’ve been experiencing but one of my girlfriends recommended the Paleo diet- I’ll have to check out your post!

P.S. What is hemp milk?! And what are the nutritional benefits?

  29. Irene on March 16, 2012 at 3:29 pm

Just wanted to say thanks for the paleo post! I think I was one of the requesters:) It was so interesting to read all the comments too. It seems to go against most of what I’ve always thought, but I was really surprised how much people loved it. I read somewhere, I think maybe thegreatfitnessexperiment.com, that one of the only things almost every diet has in common is to eat a ton of vegetables. So I thought that was a great thing to emphasize, and I’ve been challenging myself to keep working on eating more veggies!

  30. Ellie @ healthy belly ellie on March 16, 2012 at 5:24 pm

I absolutely love making your breakfast cookies! SO good! I must try adding blueberries to them!

  31. Quinn on March 16, 2012 at 8:55 pm

I went to my first spin class today, my legs are still shaking…and it was only 30 min. Gotta say I was super intimidated the whole time, but the second we started cool down I was so proud of myself that I made it. I have to give you some credit; your blog really gives me the push I need to step out of my comfort zone in terms of fitness.

Thank YOU 😀 and Livi is beautiful as always!

  32. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on March 16, 2012 at 10:24 pm

Oh man, Dallas is definitely not that cool! I’ve never found almond milk anywhere, but then again, I always go to Starbucks. I’ll have to start branching out!!

  33. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on March 18, 2012 at 3:32 pm

I always get excited when a place has almond milk but living in some places that have no options, I’m just happy when there’s soy milk. Though I’d be REALLY happy if Starbucks would offer almond milk…
