Confessions of a Personal Trainer

IMG00017-20100104-2028

1. I ate two brownies in my car before walking into the gym to check your food journal.

brownies

2. If you come to your appointment with your hair and makeup perfectly done, I make it my mission to have you sweat off the makeup and leave with crazy gym hair.

3. During my own workouts, it’s hard to not go up to other gym-goers and give them tips on form or ways to switch up what they’re doing.

4. It’s also hard not to run through the gym high-fiving everyone and letting them know I’m proud of them for taking care of their health. That would make me weird, so I just picture it in my head.

5. I add at least 10 seconds to your plank time and then tell you afterwards.

me

6. On the same note, if I forget how many reps you have left, I just make up a higher number.

7. I wore the same shirt to train clients yesterday. I didn’t work out in it, so I figured it was ok.

8. I’ll always ask you what you had for breakfast that day.

bfast

9. Some clients want to chat, others want to work. A lovely mix are the ones who are friendly, but work really hard. I know you’re not supposed to mix friends with business, but some of my clients have become very good friends.

10. I don’t care how old you are, how long you’ve been working out, or how much weight you want to lose. If you made the investment to hire a trainer and are putting in the effort, I tip my hat to you, and will make it worth your while 😉

        • RachelG on March 20, 2012 at 8:44 pm

I would love and do hope to come and workout with you eventually, Gina! You’ve helped me so much by reinventing my workouts and inspiring me to be a more well rounded eater! 🙂 For the longest time my food mindset was “LOSE WEIGHT. CUT OUT EVERYTHING. LOSE WEIGHT,” but now my fridge is stocked with such a healthier mix of foods.

…but i’ll only come when your weather turns into what we’re having on the east coast! lol.

Any interest in moving the fam out to FL for about 3 months??? My wedding’s around the corner, and I could really use a PT! 😉

    • Fitnessista on March 20, 2012 at 8:34 pm

how about you come to tucson? 🙂

  3. Amy on March 20, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Haha I love it! These are all things I suspected about my trainer, but now am certain are true! Especially the extra ten seconds to my planks…. 🙂

  4. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on March 20, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Haha, love this post! Number 1 cracked me up, and number 6 is evil 🙂 Number 2 reminded me of a woman who has been in a lot of group exercise classes with me, and she always has big, perfectly curled hair and a full face of makeup – I have NO idea how she can work out with her hair down, let alone styled. I always think that she must not be working hard enough 🙂

  5. Colleen C on March 20, 2012 at 8:34 pm

umm you are hilarious. will you be my personal trainer?!!? too bad you don’t live in mass.

  6. Olivia on March 20, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Is this from your perspective as a trainer? Or someone else?

    • Fitnessista on March 20, 2012 at 8:35 pm

these are all true stories from myself

  7. Jenn on March 20, 2012 at 8:35 pm

    Hahah Love it!
I always wish I could get into trainers heads to see what they really think! If MA wasn’t so far away from AZ I’d sign up for your sessions any day!

  8. Amy @ In The Mixing Bowl on March 20, 2012 at 8:36 pm

  23. Erin on March 20, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Im not even a trainer but there are times when i do want to go around to people and say how happy i am they’re taking care of their health!

I love your style for making up numbers or adding 10 more seconds. Though im always counting myself!

  24. Jana on March 20, 2012 at 9:27 pm

*heh heh* those made me laugh! – I am PT in Toronto,ON Canada and am totally guilty of most of those! 🙂

I would love to work with someone like you!

  26. JBecca on March 20, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Haha! I always suspected my trainer pulled the plank trick, too. Those “trainer seconds” are so much longer than normal ones. 😉

    Love #4! Awesome visual. 🙂

  27. Jacqueline on March 20, 2012 at 9:37 pm

I would LOVE it if someone ran through the gym offering high-fives while I worked out!!

  31. Kirsten on March 20, 2012 at 9:54 pm

Love it! Especially the one about women who wear makeup and you make it your mission for them to sweat it off!

  32. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on March 20, 2012 at 9:58 pm

I love this post! So cute!

  33. Jen F on March 20, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Love, love, love this post! So true and very funny 😉 This made my night!

  34. Criss on March 20, 2012 at 10:03 pm

Cute article! The only thing I sort of don’t agree with is your stance on makeup. I’ll never understand people who get disgruntled at women who wear makeup to the gym. I always wear at least some makeup wherever I go, and while it’s not a full-on face, mascara is still pretty noticeable. I don’t do it for attention, but because it’s what makes me feel comfortable. Also, not everyone sweats profusely. When I lift weights, I get slightly clammy but barely break a sweat! Even in my band camp days as a teenager, I’d be sweating in the 105 degree sun for hours and never have my mascara melt down my face.

    • Fitnessista on March 20, 2012 at 10:06 pm

Oh I’m not talking about everyday makeup- I always wear that too. I’m talking pageant face 🙂

      • Criss on March 22, 2012 at 6:10 am

Oh, so the full on lipstick and everything? Yeah, okay, I’m with you there. That just seems downright uncomfortable.

        • Fitnessista on March 22, 2012 at 12:59 pm

yes, and the caked on foundation and powder.

  35. Alyssa on March 20, 2012 at 10:07 pm

I really like this post, thanks for your honesty and encouragement. It’s easy to think that trainers are not as invested during sessions. Thanks for showing me another side. 🙂

  36. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on March 20, 2012 at 10:11 pm

I knew my personal trainer was tricking me 😛

  37. Allison on March 20, 2012 at 10:14 pm

    haha love it!
I’m not a personal trainer, but i am guilty of #4, on my 10K run Sunday I wanted to high-five all sorts of people running just for getting out there and taking a healthy step! I didn’t high-five anyone though because i didn’t want to be a creeper. I mentally high-fived them though!

  38. Christie on March 20, 2012 at 10:22 pm

That is too funny. I’m guessing it’s the same with physical therapists, because I showed up to a session , looking cute with eyeliner and straightened hair. I hurt more leaving there that day that any other. lol In my defense, my physical therapist is one hawt man. 🙂

    • Johnna on March 20, 2012 at 10:38 pm

too funny Christie – I was just going to post the same thing. My trainer is HOT…several years younger than me but I don’t care – he is HOT! I always go to the gym looking my best. I leave looking like a drowned raccoon…but with a smile on my face!

  39. kaila@ healthy helper blog! on March 20, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Love this! Especially the brownie part 🙂

  40. Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) on March 20, 2012 at 10:34 pm

    such a funny post!

  42. Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon on March 20, 2012 at 10:52 pm

    I love this 🙂
Also, as a gym-goer, I would love it if you interrupted my workout to correct my form. Just sayin!

  43. Lindsay on March 20, 2012 at 10:54 pm

That’s the most truth I’ve ever heard! I’m a personal trainer and I’m guilty of all of it!!

  44. chelsea on March 20, 2012 at 11:02 pm

Omg #4 I high five EVERYONE hahaah. People think I’m weird. Even the little 10 year olds I coach say, “Why do you high five so much?!”

  45. Sarah @ Licorice and Olives on March 20, 2012 at 11:03 pm

Ok, along the same vein as everyone else – I am coming to Arizona and you are whipping my back side into shape. I have tried 2 different trainers and both just had me doing isolation exercises, I never worked up a sweat and hence gave up. I want to work!!

  46. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on March 20, 2012 at 11:08 pm

I can’t STAND when people go to the gym with perfect hair and make up all done.. I go to the gym to WORK… and I don’t look pretty when I sweat. It is what it is!

  47. Linz @ Itz Linz on March 20, 2012 at 11:16 pm

you’re awesome, hilarious, and hardcore! i would love to get my booty whooped by you!

I’m digging the dog toy on your yoga mat. :p

Oh! I’ve been meaning to ask – do you own any Lulu CRBs? I’m thiiiiis close to ordering one for yoga teacher training, but I want more opinions.

    • Fitnessista on March 21, 2012 at 12:05 am

I have at least 10- wearing one right now! My all time fave tank 🙂

  50. Averie @ Averie Cooks on March 20, 2012 at 11:53 pm

I love your #10. I know how much pride you take in your job and I know your clients are lucky to have you working hard for them, being there, and helping them workout effectively and stay motivated.

And brownies are always a good thing 🙂
