If you didn’t win the giveaway, no need to fret 😀 The fabulous Tina is having a blog bake sale—you can bid to win a giant batch of custom macaroons. I’m happy to ship to international readers and also, as I’ve mentioned before, I don’t *just* put macaroons in my blog bake sale packages- there will be nut butter, bars, protein packs, whatever random goodies I feel like throwing in 😉 *Click here* to hit up the bake sale!

Mmmmm, roons….

roons roons

So last night, I really wanted Moe’s again for dinner. I kept dreaming about Sunday’s whole wheat black bean burrito, and knew I needed another one in my life.

burrito

Bootay shot:

butt

After dinner, I did a hair mask, since my mane has been a little dry as of late.

Supplies:

materials

In a bowl, mash the following:

-1 whole avocado

-1/2 banana

-1 T olive oil

-If your hair is super damaged, add 2 T yogurt (coconut milk yogurt works amazingly, so does organic cow or goat’s milk yogurt)- Last night I just used the banana, avocado and olive oil

-Use half the recipe if you have short or really thin hair

mask

Looks pretty tasty, right?? 🙂

Put half of your hair up and smooth the mixture onto your hair from the ends up towards the roots. If you have oily hair, just do the bottom 2/3 of your hair- not the roots. My hair is dry, so I do the entire length of hair. Let down the top of your hair and massage the mixture thoroughly into all sections, twist into an updo, secure with a bobby pin, and leave on for 20 minutes.

This provides a lot of high-quality comedy for a husband, let me tell ya.

goofers

He kept asking if he could dip a chip on my head 😉

Hop in the shower and shampoo, condition and dry hair as usual.

hair

(That’s a pic from the archives- last night I just let my hair air dry and called it good)

It’s amazing because you can really feel the difference in your hair the next day. Mine already feels remarkably softer and healthier 🙂

I’m off to make some bfast since I went running this morning (yes, the ex-boyfriend and I had a full-on rendezvous- more on that to follow) and then get to work!

See ya later today <3

xoxo,

Gina

I eat banana + avocado mash all the time. I would have been so tempted take a couple licks…ha kidding!

I was crossing my fingers as I clicked on the link. Sad I won’t be stuffing my face with ‘roons 🙁

  2. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete on September 14, 2010 at 11:01 am

I used to make face masks out of egg whites or oatmeal, but I haven’t done that in a while. I bet your hair smells so good with the avocado/banana in there!

Ooh Gina and Running sittin in a tree…

  3. Laury @ thefitnessdish on September 14, 2010 at 11:04 am

AI haven’t had Moe’s in years! No idea they had a whole wheat black bean burrito…I’m totally going today, haha.

Love the avocado head… results are soooo shiny and silky!!

  4. Heather on September 14, 2010 at 11:07 am

I guess if you consider baking soda and vinegar food, those are my favorite edibles to use as shampoo and conditioner 🙂

  5. Whitney @ Whitinspired on September 14, 2010 at 11:18 am

Aww bummer! I wanted those ‘roons! I have never used food or items around the household. For some reason I just like to spend ridiculous amounts of money on conditioning treatments. I wonder if that mixture will help my split ends? I must try!

  6. Kristina @ spabettie on September 14, 2010 at 11:20 am

congrats Eileen! Gina’s roons are FANTASTIC ! 🙂

I’ve never used anything like this on my hair… for so many years I was super lucky to run a spa with a hair studio – I was able to get pampered whenever I wanted 🙂 *I MISS* those days! 🙂

I do love a good conditioning though 🙂

  7. Maissa (Run, Rant, Realize) on September 14, 2010 at 11:24 am

That hair mask looks great, and those comments from the pilot are hilarious. I use coconut oil as a moisturizer all the time, and that’s a food!

  8. Laura (On the Threshold of Greatness) on September 14, 2010 at 11:33 am

Thanks for bringing back the burrito bootay! (or Care to Eat’s burrito butt) 😀

I’ve done an avocado hair mask before. You’ve just reminded me all about it! I also use the standard coconut oil moisturizer.

  9. Ashleigh on September 14, 2010 at 11:36 am

Glad you and the ex are on speaking terms…fall is by far the best time of the year to run! Do you subscribe to Women’s Health? As a magazine, I think it’s okay. I expected to be blown away when it first came out(yeah,I’m old) and was kinda disappointed. It’s obviously gotten better since the beginning, but I’m not sure if it’s king of the hill over it’s competitors. What is your favorite “fitness” mag?

  10. Shelly on September 14, 2010 at 11:43 am

Do you put the mask on dry or wet hair?

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2010 at 12:36 pm

      on dry hair

  11. MoniMeals on September 14, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Ha! I love it! Great pic of you and the pilot. I love avocado for the hair. I have also used olive oil. Cocount oil is great for the skin-I have a homemade srcub I love. If it is good for the body, it is good for outside the body!
On another note-I wanted your macaroons, Boo! 🙂

  12. Paige @ Running Around Normal on September 14, 2010 at 12:18 pm

LOL! I love that you took pics of it:) And the pilot + you pic is hilarious.
You ran! Glad it was a fun rendezvous 😉

  13. Jessica @ How Sweet on September 14, 2010 at 12:24 pm

I have never tried, but have always wanted to!
And I love that pic of you and the Pilot. Adorable!

  14. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on September 14, 2010 at 12:27 pm

So glad you’re rocking the soft locks after your mask! I love it when I used a mask or something that I feel like totally worked wonders and I can tell a night and day difference, immediately. That Unite line of haircare I told you about in my comment yesterday, that’s that way for me, night and day, immediately.

Homemade or using food ideas? Well coconut oil is my moisturizer of choice and when Skylar as a baby I cloth diapered her and made my own wipes solution with water, tea tree oil and lavender essential oil and I saturated cloth wipes with it and of course washed and reused all my wipes along with cloth diapering. Those wipes smelled so good and every time I smell tea tree oil, I think back to her baby days 🙂

  15. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on September 14, 2010 at 12:28 pm

I used to do facemasks but when I discovered that my skin does not do well with apple and cinnamon on my face (in which I ended up with my face as red as a lobster and a puffy as a puffer fish), well I’ve stopped. Haha. But it sure looks great.

  16. Heather (Heather's Dish) on September 14, 2010 at 12:28 pm

i really want to try this hair mask! it makes sense that it would be awesome with all of the healthy fats 🙂

  17. Krystina on September 14, 2010 at 12:29 pm

I would love to do that if avos weren’t so expensive. 🙁

  18. Jessica on September 14, 2010 at 12:45 pm

I am totally doing this soon. Thanks.

  19. Tina on September 14, 2010 at 12:52 pm

I’ve never done a hair mask. I’m always worried it will weigh down my already fine hair. Why I think that…I don’t know. I’m sure natural products wuold weigh it down less than chemicals.

  20. Nola @ The Zetetic Gamin on September 14, 2010 at 12:53 pm

*sigh* I miss Moe’s… We had one for about a year and a half in my old hometown. When they had to close we went into mourning!

  21. Karyn on September 14, 2010 at 12:56 pm

i’m actually to scared to use food as beauty products. although wayyyyy back in the day i used kool-aid to dye me hair. oopsies hahah 🙂

  22. Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous on September 14, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I tried an avocado mask once and it took forever to get the avocado pieces out of my hair! I swear I had to shampoo 3 times and by then all the moisture was stripped again :/

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2010 at 1:42 pm

      really? mine came right out

  23. Carrie on September 14, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I put some sort of egg white mixture on my hair once when I was in jr. high and it made it super shiny…but it also ended up rather oily. D: Do you think you could smooth this down over your face too? Has the makins’ of a facial, maybe with some honey.

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2010 at 1:42 pm

i totally think it would be a great facial!

  24. Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) on September 14, 2010 at 1:06 pm

I definitely eat all those delicious foods, but have never put them in my hair… I think I agree with the pilot… I’d rather dip a chip in ’em 😉

  25. Caitlin (EatFeats) on September 14, 2010 at 1:08 pm

I too have been dreaming of burritos!

  26. Katie on September 14, 2010 at 1:10 pm

The only food-type product I’ve used on my hair was vodka. My friend heard that if you soak your hair in it before laying out, your hair will turn blonde. We tried it while vacationing with our families at the beach. Our parents weren’t too pleased when they went to make a cocktail and all the vodka was gone! (It didn’t work, btw). I think I’m going to have to try the avocado one though!

  27. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on September 14, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Oh wow, I really need to do that hair mask! My hairdresser is in Greece right now and my hair is in a pretty outrageous state. Thanks for the recipe! 🙂

  28. hira on September 14, 2010 at 1:16 pm

sounds lovely. my mother has always told me to massage a bit of olive oil into my scalp/hair twice a week, the night before a shower (or a few hours before showering). also, combining an egg, yogurt and a bit of lemon is great and effective for a homemade hair-conditioning treatment.

  29. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on September 14, 2010 at 1:28 pm

I’ve never tried avocado on my hair! The only “food” I usually use as a beauty product is coconut oil– it’s my moisturizer of choice!

I’ve been meaning to try making an avocado mask, but usually I’d rather EAT it than wear it! Guess I should keep more avocados around the house so I can do both! 😉

  30. Naomi on September 14, 2010 at 1:56 pm

love using things you can find in the fridge for beauty purposes 🙂

  31. Melody on September 14, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Ok. A few years ago my friend and I saw some banana concoction at Bath & Body Works and decided to try and make our own w/ just smashed up bananas. It was a NIGHTMARE! I think we were picking banana bits out of our hair for a week 🙂 How do you get it all out?!?!

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2010 at 3:19 pm

you just have to make sure to mash it really well, and srcub well when you shampoo.

  32. Mo on September 14, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I love that any vanity you have doesn’t get in the way of showing us such goofy pictures! Now that colder weather is on the way, dryer hair is too – I’ll have to give this a whirl, but I don’t plan on documenting it with any photos!

    Have a good one.

  33. Lauren on September 14, 2010 at 2:21 pm

I haven’t done much with food-as-beauty products, apart from using olive oil on really dry skin (works like magic!). Though I did get really into making my own natural products – with stuff like witch hazel and rose flower water – in middle school. Fun times 🙂

  34. Jaclyn on September 14, 2010 at 2:25 pm

I have definitely used food as beauty products before, hair and skin masks…

The ex bf is back?! I wanna hear more on that! 😉

Love the food in the hair. Dip a chip in it, that’s what I was thinkin! 😀

  35. Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf on September 14, 2010 at 2:47 pm

I once used vegetable oil and vinegar in my hair. All it did was make my hair greasy and smell like vegetable oil and vinegar. Ick.

  36. sandy on September 14, 2010 at 2:57 pm

i used to eat banana & avos (plus mango) every single day in the morning for months yum. never tried on my hair. i use coconut oil for skin.

  37. Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) on September 14, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Ooh, you ship to international readers. Perhaps I’ll have to take a look at Tina’s Blog Bake Sale!

  38. Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) on September 14, 2010 at 3:42 pm

By they way, that hair mask look great, and kind of tasty. 🙂

  39. Kirby on September 14, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Baking soda is a great once-and-awhile deep cleanser for hair…just a few teaspoons with some water to make a paste, run through hair and rinse. And white or apple cider vinegar are great for a hair rinse – just pour a cup or so on the hair, starting at the roots, let sit for a minute or two, and rinse out! Hair will be really soft and shiny 🙂

  40. Kate on September 14, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I think I would have a tough time mashing up that avocado to put in my hair instead of eating it. Haha. I looove avocado. I’ve never tried a hair mask like this before though, it looks interesting!

  41. Chelsea on September 14, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Ohhh interesting! Never thought to use avocado..but a much cheaper alternative to coconut oil! Thanks!

  42. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on September 14, 2010 at 4:19 pm

I’ve never used food for that but I did just read that if you bite off the end of a strawberry and then rub it on your face that it is a very good exfoliator. Don’t know if I would actually do that but I found it pretty interesting.

  43. LisaG on September 14, 2010 at 4:27 pm

You and the pilot are too funny. I will have to try Mo’s; we have two here but I’ve never been.

  44. Natalie @ simply fit. simply clean. on September 14, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Oh, the many uses of our beloved foods! Totally needed this. I refuse to get my haircut (b/c I’m crazy), so needless to say, I have splitends galore from straightening. Three of my favorite ingredients to the rescue! Thanks!

  45. Laura on September 14, 2010 at 6:08 pm

I just tried your avocado mask and WOW! My hair feels great! So soft and shiny and the split ends are much less noticeable. I almost always have half an avocado around that needs using up, and this is perfect for that. No more buying expensive hair masks! Thanks!

  46. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on September 14, 2010 at 7:32 pm

I really want to make that hair mask… but I’m almost positive it would end up in my belly instead of in my hair. 😉

  47. Raya on September 15, 2010 at 12:14 am

I made your chocolate mug cake and it was EPIC!! I used cocoa instead of cacao powder because it was all I had. And chia seeds + water for the “flax egg.” It was AMAZING!!!

    • Fitnessista on September 15, 2010 at 8:07 am

i’m so glad you liked it!! <3

A while back I had to do a homemade beauty product badge for Girl Scouts and ever since then I have been making hair masks out of bananas and avocados and hand cream out of butter and honey. (Okay…I may have tasted them a few times. ;-))

  49. TheHealthyApron on November 22, 2010 at 10:03 am

I just started to dive in to food ingredients for face/hair! Great mix!
