Drink yo greens

Hiiiiii 😀 Happy humpday/Indian Food Wednesday! Who’s celebrating? I’m actually meeting a friend for Italian for lunch, so for me it’s going to be Italian Food Wednesday 😉

I’ve created a monster.

bella

The other night, we had the heater on but it was still a little chilly, so in bed, I lightly *tucked* a blanket around Bella so she would stay warm. She didn’t move all night- she was so happy. I’ve done it a few times with a throw blanket on the couch… and now, whenever she’s near a blanket, she’ll scratch at it and then look at me, waiting for me to come tuck her in. What a goofer.

For breakfast, I had the usual green juice:

juice

juice (2)

and some purple oats.

oats

A serving of Bob’s Red Mill GF oats cooked in almond milk, with frozen organic blueberries stirred in (they heat up while the oats finish cooking), and a smidge of organic butter.

oats (2)

So since I stopped being lazy about cleaning the juicer, I think it’s really helped with my energy levels. I’ve slowly stopped the multiple packs of Via (even though they’re so delicious!) and haven’t really felt the need for coffee lately. It’s such an easy way to get fruit and veg servings.

When I’m in a hurry or just want an extra dose of greenery in my life, I’ve been enjoying this mixed with water or in smoothies:

greens

Supergreens!
An amazing source of probiotic greens with alfalfa, barley grass, wheatgrass, oatgrass, peppermint and Stevia. Everything is organic, cold-pressed to preserve the nutrients and gluten free.

The color is a little funky

greens (2)

but the taste is LOVELY. Very mild, slightly minty and sweet. Delicious.

It’s been a good option for me because I’m pretty choosy with the greens I’ll juice or put in my smoothies- romaine and spinach are my best bets. Kale tastes like sweaty gym man, and I don’t have a wheatgrass juicer. This is an easy way to get variety and extra nutrients.

If you’ve been wanting to try the Supergreens, make sure to *follow me on OpenSky*- we’ll be sending out an email to the followers with tomorrow’s crazyawesome promo.

I’m off to the gym 🙂

See ya later today!

xoxo

    • Sarra on January 19, 2011 at 11:11 am

“i have the jack lalanne and its a pain” that rhymes hahahaha 😛

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 12:47 pm

      haven’t tried it yet!

  2. Kiim on January 19, 2011 at 11:05 am

I’ve been juicing every morning also – I agree it ups my energy level! Looking forward to the opensky promo!

  3. Gill (snaxandthecity) on January 19, 2011 at 11:09 am

haha i totally agree about the kale taste – i can hardly get any juice out of the crappy kale we get here.

i’m intrigued that you’ve felt more energized after drinking it..its something i might have to incorporate!

  4. Sarra on January 19, 2011 at 11:10 am

    bella is sooooo cuteeeee

  5. Joanna@ Drizzle of Sunshine on January 19, 2011 at 11:11 am

Haha Silly Bella! I love how they are like little children with their personalities and everything! She’s adorable. I’ve never tried the sun warrior and would like to! Do they sell it at Traders?

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 12:44 pm

i wish! i’ve only been able to find it online

  6. Kate @ Spoonful of Vigor on January 19, 2011 at 11:17 am

I just recently purchased a juicer, and I’ve been loving green juice in the morning! Looking forward to the promo you mentioned as it would be nice to have a good-tasting, on-the-go green drink option.

  7. Sabine @ thefruitpursuit on January 19, 2011 at 11:25 am

Hmm thanks for the tip! I have no juicer but make green monsters now and then but only use spinach or romaine. kale is a little harder to get here )and yeah tastes funkier) and I know that not rotating your greens is unhealthy. I’ll pick this up when I get the change!

What kind of juicer do you use? (Brand name??)

I’ve been drinking lots of green monsters (spinach & soy milk, chia seeds or flaxseeds, banana!) but would like to get into juicing! I’m fussy when it comes to veggies so these drinks give my body much needed nutrients!

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 12:44 pm

      jack lalanne

  9. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on January 19, 2011 at 11:28 am

I love greens in things. I’ve been on a serious smoothie kick lately- I’ve come to love the taste that spinach gives them!

My cat used to sleep all tucked in next to me in bed too. I had to kick her out since both my boyfriends since I was 15 have been crazy-allergic to cats. She still hasn’t forgiven me!

  10. Ashley on January 19, 2011 at 11:28 am

Aw Bella is so cute. I love to juice but I can’t in my dorm. The sun warrior would be a really awesome option.

  11. lauren alysse on January 19, 2011 at 11:34 am

    supergreens sounds super intresting!

    and bella is the cutest.

  12. Kathie @ Frugal, Fit and Fabulous on January 19, 2011 at 11:47 am

i was drinking a green smoothie every morning…until it became FREEZING COLD here. Then I stopped. When I was drinking it, I had crazy amounts of energy and also only needed my one cup of AM coffee. I haven’t had a smoothie in almost two months and you can tell. I dont like it at all. Thoe Supergreens seem like a great alternative. Are they similar to “Amazing Grass” I tasted their’s and well, i was not exactly a fan. =/

Bella is just too cute in her blanket and how she acts about it now. heehee. you’re a good doggy mommy

  13. Ilana on January 19, 2011 at 11:48 am

I just had the greenest green juice ever, it was on the menu at a juice bar by my job and I couldn’t resist. It had collards, kale, spinach, celery, cuke, green apple, and half a lemon. It was so like hold-your-nose-and-chug but I feel like I’m buzzing off the walls! Ever since I quit coffee green juice works so much better for me.

  14. nicole on January 19, 2011 at 11:52 am

That looks really interesting! I’m going to finally make another green smoothie today, which I haven’t done since summer.

  15. Krista on January 19, 2011 at 11:53 am

I really need to to try those green monsters. I see them every day on blogs, but I just haven’t had the courage to blend up spinach or romaine yet! I just have such a hard time believing that you can’t taste it…

  16. Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles on January 19, 2011 at 11:54 am

Aw, your little blanket monster. Too precious!!

  17. jen @ taste life on January 19, 2011 at 12:03 pm

    I love pets 🙂

I don’t juice, but I do make green smoothies and I also have a bizarre love and passion for Amazing Grass, the chocolate flavor. I’ll drink that stuff mixed into cold water, no problem.

  18. Sarah (Sarah Learns) on January 19, 2011 at 12:05 pm

i’ve never tried juiced veggies. i really want to give it a shot, though! does whole foods do fresh juices?

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 12:42 pm

yes but the bummer is that they’re super expensive- my fave juice is about $7

  19. Jessica on January 19, 2011 at 12:11 pm

LOVE green juice! I drank it all through my pregnancy and it’s great for keeping up with breastfeeding too! I have a double batch everyday! I also hate to clean the juicer though, so sometimes I will make a bunch and then freeze the extra. When I am ready for another juice on the day I don’t have time or feel like cleaning the juicer, I just thaw it out in hot water and have a slushy! THis was the only thing that kept me cool when I was pregnant over the summer!!! Also I am confused……how is the ‘super green’ stuff gluten free if it has barley grass? Is that different than regular barley?

  20. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on January 19, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Bella is too cute! I feel the same way about blankets…I’m always cold! 🙂

Green monsters are rocking my world right now…I LOVE them!

  23. Kiran on January 19, 2011 at 12:40 pm

I love green monsters! And Bella is super cute 🙂

  24. Rachel @ Grateful Girl Goes Gluten Free on January 19, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Your green juice is very healthy looking, but idk if I handle the taste!

  25. Brittney on January 19, 2011 at 12:49 pm

My pup loves being in a blanket too! Sometimes when I’m sitting on the couch he noses his way under the blanket I have on my lap so he can be sandwiched between me and the blanket for even more warmth! It is cute though!

  26. Madeleine @ Stepping to the Bright Side on January 19, 2011 at 12:53 pm

Ooooo, I’ll have to check out those Sun Warrior super greens. You mentioned Crazy Sexy Diet on your twitter feed a little while ago… I’ve been reading it myself- totally inspires me to drink those greens UP! 🙂

  27. Namaste Gurl on January 19, 2011 at 1:03 pm

Sun warrior supergreens, wowza! I’m all over these and perfect timing as well since I’m down to the bottom of my vanilla sun warrior. Do the SW supergreens have protein like the brown rice protein? Can’t wait for the promo:)

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 1:15 pm

it’s more of a nutrient supplement than protein powder– i need to order more protein, too!

  28. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on January 19, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Thank you for your “Something to think” – I’m writing it down right now and sticking it in my agenda!!! Bella is adorable, and if you ask me, the world needs more purple/blue foods!

  29. Katie on January 19, 2011 at 1:17 pm

i’ve been on a major juice kick lately. i like adding beets & carrots too! kale is nastay, agreed. so is celery! blech.

  30. Christin@purplebirdblog on January 19, 2011 at 1:17 pm

My little dog also likes to be wrapped up like a burrito, he’ll stay that way for hours! Those greens sound ridiculous… I want some!

  31. annie on January 19, 2011 at 1:18 pm

    omg bella is sooo cute!

  32. Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table on January 19, 2011 at 1:24 pm

It is so funny how eating odd-colored (green, purple, orange… sludge…) foods no longer phases me. The stranger, the better! 🙂

  33. Molly on January 19, 2011 at 1:25 pm

HA! You have created a monster with the blanket thing! My dog does that too and now every time I have a blanket covering me, she wants to join in!

  34. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on January 19, 2011 at 1:26 pm

haha, Bella is adorable! And this is coming from someone who really doesn’t like dogs!

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 5:41 pm

hahah even people that don’t like dogs love bella. my nana used to be afraid of dogs until i got her- now bella will jump up on her lap and give her kisses 🙂

  35. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on January 19, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Bella is too funny. It’s funny the habits our dogs get into. I’m definitely missing my dog now.

  36. Maryann on January 19, 2011 at 1:35 pm

Bella is such a cutie! I don’t have a juicer but when I drink my veggie smoothies I definitely notice an increase in my energy levels.

  37. lindsay on January 19, 2011 at 1:39 pm

oh I love my greens. I have yet to try the sun warrior greens. That is a must! Thanks friend.

  38. Amanda on January 19, 2011 at 1:43 pm

My cat does the exact same thing! She loves to tunnel under her blanky.

  39. Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn on January 19, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Bella is absolutely presh! You should get her a heated blanket for her birthday;)

I wish I had a juicer, but I am on a mayjor budget, so green smoothies are how I roll! That’s my basic combo too, but I always use kale or spinach. I’m hard core;)

  40. Allison @ Food For Healing on January 19, 2011 at 2:00 pm

bella is adorable. my one kitty, daisy, recently discovered (recently being in the last 6months) that she loves going underneath blankets. she’s 2 years old now, and never knew about the whole new world underneath the blankets, so she always is digging and pushing her way in. its so cute.

i might have to start juicing again, the juices i’ve made just seemed to blah and i could barely choke them down, so its turned me off of juicing.

  41. mi-an dela cruz on January 19, 2011 at 2:05 pm

i shall be making lentil curry tonite! hooray for indian wed! that oats looks lovely. i sometimes put a bit of earth balance on top of my oatmeals too…so good!

  42. Amanda (Eating Up) on January 19, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Butter in oatmeal is one of life’s simplest pleasures. Make that butter on anything.

Thanks for the Supergreens tip. Now looking forward to the promo. I ordered the Vanilla and Chocolate Protein Powder with the last promo-it took a couple drinks for me to adjust to the taste but now I am HOOKED!! Can’t wait to try the greenstuff, I can always use an extra dose of those good greens.

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 5:36 pm

so glad you like the protein- you’ll LOVE the greens

      • Carolyn on January 19, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I think my tastebuds had gotten used to that additional chemical garbage stuff that they were shocked by what good and pure powder was like. Super pumped!!

  45. Mandy (theamazonprincess) on January 19, 2011 at 2:22 pm

My dogs do the same thing! Except they finally learned to burrow under the blanket themselves. 😀 haha. They are too cute.

  46. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on January 19, 2011 at 2:33 pm

Bella on that blankie is toooooo cute! What a little lovebug and she’s got you trained now with whenever she sees a blanket she wants to be tucked in..what a cutie! 🙂

Kale tasting like…sweaty gym man. LOL

I am not big on any type of green meal replacement powder b/c many times they are SO STRONG and they overpower things and taste so..dirty or earthy or gritty to me. So thanks for the info on this one.

    Enjoy your day, Gina!

  47. carolinebee on January 19, 2011 at 2:42 pm

haha umm I feel like I do the same thing at home when I’m on the couch…making eyes at my mom and looking longingly at the blanket across the room that I’m too lazy to fetch 😀 I loveee that u put butter on your oatmeal- my uncle made it like that for me in Costa Rica and I got weirded out…THEN tried it- holy amazing!

  49. Lauren on January 19, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Love your blog! Thanks so much for it! 🙂 I have a question about juicing/blending… I hate to juice because I feel like so much of the produce is wasted. I have heard you can blend everything in the vitamix and it turns into “juice”. I Don’t have a vitamix yet and was wondering if you have tried it. I imagine the vitamix would make a smoothie rather than juice, but just wanted to ask your opinion. Thanks 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 5:34 pm

you *can* but it’s a LOT of fiber and comes out more like a raw fruit veggie soup.
you can save the pulp from the juices and use for a lot of things- like raw crackers, veggie slaw or applesauce

  50. Kara on January 19, 2011 at 3:39 pm

I have to tuck my dog in every night. It’s funny because she’s too big to need that level of babying. The best part is that she won’t get up and turn around 15 million times in the night because she doesn’t want to get out from under her blanket. Dogs are so silly.
