Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Friday! Sorry for disappearing on ya yesterday. It was one of those days where I had nothing to blog about, and my brain was in a fog because Liv has been waking up quite a bit during the night. When one child sleeps, the other doesn’t. Is this how the rest of childhood works? Please don’t say yes haha.

What’s going on this weekend? Anything fun happening? I’m teaching barre and Zumba, and excited to catch up with a friend that’s in town. ALSO, PBB launches next week! I’ll be getting things together behind the scenes and am so excited for it.

In standard Friday fashion, here are some faves from the week and around the web. I always love to hear what you’re enjoying, too, so please shout it out in the comments section if you would like.

Shopbop sale is heeeeeeeere. I always look forward to their spring sale, and will use it as an opportunity to stock up on a cute dresses for the spring/summer. Here are some of the ones I’m loving from this sale:

This printed dress (though I wonder if it’s super short in real life?)

This comfy tee option with a pocket

This breezy white sundress

and this ombre wash.

Beaching with Bella boo.

Bellaboo

(Caro is scared of sand and waves, so she usually chills at home when we go to the beach.)

The new Snapchat effects.

Livi alien

It’s not selfish to make time for sleep, exercise, and reducing stress. <3

This is silly, but I think Damn, Daniel is hilarious.

Tender Greens takeout.

Tender greens

A meditation teacher’s tips to calm down and refocus in 30 seconds.

Validation. Newborn baby smell is the best ever.

Enjoying acai bowls with this little lady.

Liv and acai bowl

What it’s like to be Leo’s assistant.

Simple beauty tips that make a big difference.

Almond brownies? Yassssss.

I can’t wait to see this Von Gogh documentary.

Tips for getting rid of sugar cravings.

An awesome cauliflower recipe.

Back on a 5-day weightlifting split. I’ve only done a bit of cardio (and taught Zumba on Sunday), and have been focusing on challenging myself with the weights. My shirt says “Everything hurts and I’m dying” aka when shampooing your hair is painful. Since I haven’t been doing much cardio, I’ve been catching up on podcasts. (They’re not very motivating for cardio haha.) Are there any new ones I should check out?

Gymmin

An intense Tabata workout!

I need this Shamrock shake.

Not a fave? THIS. Just don’t do it.

IMG 8488

My trainer is all about the whey protein -I told her I’m obsessed with vegan Shakeology but the protein content isn’t as high as whey- so I was excited to see this at Whole Foods. I don’t do a ton of cow’s dairy (though I will crush a cheese board with some wine), and usually stick to goat and sheep dairy. The verdict on this goat whey? It tastes like death and sadness. I love goat cheese and goat yogurt, and this was WAY (whey? buaha) too goaty for me. Looking at the photo makes me gag a little. Don’t do it. Shakeo for life.

I leave you with the Miss P smile of the day.

Miss p smile

Happy Friday, lovely friends!

xo

Gina

Something to do: this kettlebell workout! It’s one of my faves. It will blast your heart rate and is a great way to change up your strength training routine.

I’m getting swim instructor certified this weekend and will be teaching swim lesson at the Y to kids. I’m very excited!

You watch the Bachelor right? At least a little? There’s a podcast on the Channel 33 network called Bachelor Party and it’s hysterical. I regularly crack up like a lunatic on public transit when I listen. She also does some “hot take” episodes about current pop culturey things. So good.

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:11 pm

i will definitely check it out! i’m not super into it this season, but i still enjoy it!

My daughter also went through a phase of coming to our room often at night when she was about 3.5yrs old. The thing that worked best for us was that we would put on the calendar each morning a sticker when she slept in her own bed that night. if she could get 5 stickers in a row, she could pick out a treat at the end of the week- whether it was a small toy from the dollar store, or a sweet treat she had been eyeing, or even a night to sleep in our bed. it really helped and she’s an awesome sleeper now. She very rarely ever gets out of bed at 7 years old. I hope that helps a bit for you guys 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:11 pm

we did that for a couple of weeks and initially it worked well. now she doesn’t care if she gets a star anymore :/
she’s had a cot in our room for months, and the deal is that she’s welcome to come in anytime and sleep in her cot. coming in screaming bloody murder about losing a toy is not cool though

  5. Julia@yogawinehappiness.com on March 4, 2016 at 7:08 am

That stinks that you’re not getting much sleep! I hope it gets better soon!! It’s so hard to function while sleep deprived!!

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:10 pm

thank you! i hope so, too!
      have a great weekend <3

So I love the regular Tera’s Whey (vanilla bourbon flavor) but will definitely steer clear of that one! Thanks for the heads up!

      haha no prob!

  9. Justine Mckenzie on March 4, 2016 at 8:00 am

I need that tank!! Where did u get it? Everything hurts and I’m dieing.

    • Julie on March 4, 2016 at 8:59 am

It’s from an Etsy store called GroovyTees. I ordered one a couple weeks ago after seeing a pic Gina posted. Hilarious, right? And so TRUE when I’m running! Just beware they run REALLY small! I’m a size 6-8 (I usually wear small or medium), & I ordered a large ‘cuz I like my workout tanks a little roomier. It was VERY snug!

      • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:06 pm

thank you for chiming in, julie! happy that you like yours too 🙂 yes, i agree they run a bit small.

  10. Ashley @ A Lady Goes West on March 4, 2016 at 8:05 am

Happy Friday, Gina! I’ve actually thought about doing split days to be able to lift weights on consecutive days, but haven’t made the switch yet. My fave podcast: The Model Health Show. And YES for Tender Greens, that’s my go-to lunch spot in my ‘hood. Have a wonderful weekend! Is it Heather you’re catching up? Hope so!

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:09 pm

yes! i haven’t split it up like this since college, and it feels so good!
i will definitely check out that podcast. what’s your go-to at tender greens? i’m obsessed with their salt and pepper chicken, kale salad and tomato soup
and YES 🙂 i can’t wait to see her lovely face
      have a great weekend!

  11. Crystal on March 4, 2016 at 8:17 am

I love Tera’s Whey but the idea of goat whey doesn’t sound good at all.
Goat cheese, yes (big fat yes). Goat protein powder, no.

My Friday fave is having a 3 day weekend, thanks to Casmir Pulaski Day on Monday (one of the perks of living in Illinois). My husband’s Polish so we’re going to celebrate by sleeping in and making pierogis haha.

    Have a fantastic weekend!!

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:07 pm

AHHH love pierogis! have a wonderful weekend!

  12. queenoffitness on March 4, 2016 at 8:23 am

I happened to catch an episode of Super Nanny last week where the topic was children refusing to go to bed. I know that’s not your issue, more her staying in her bed. She has a short article titled “Getting Toddlers to Stay in Bed” on her website. I also recommend the sticker chart as others have mentioned. We use them in school all the time. Teachers complain about them but they always work. Break this habit now. It might be murder for the first two nights but consistency and being firm never fails!

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:07 pm

we did that for two weeks and now it doesn’t work anymore. i told her that she wouldn’t get her star if she didn’t stay in bed and she said “i don’t care. i don’t want my star anyway”
      ughhhhh

  13. Erin @ Erin's Inside Job on March 4, 2016 at 8:40 am

Bahaha I love that protein description. My stomach doesn’t do well with whey, so I usually stick to plant proteins. Sometimes the stevia is a little out of control, but I think I’ve figured out my faves.

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:06 pm

yeah too much stevia is a deal breaker for me

  14. Hillary on March 4, 2016 at 8:49 am

What’s your snapchat name lady? 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:06 pm

      • Hillary on March 4, 2016 at 12:50 pm

Is it a private account? It doesn’t come up for me =/

  15. whitney on March 4, 2016 at 9:27 am

FYI I loved Vegan Chocolate Shakeo too but couldn’t stand the price. I actually found this protein powder at Costco and love it. Tastes the same as Shakeo to me (granted, doesnt have the other superfoods) but has 21 g of protein vs the 16 in Shakeo. http://www.amazon.com/Orgain-Organic-Protein-Plant-Based-Vanilla/dp/B00J074W7Q

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:05 pm

i’ve heard great things about that one!! still need to try it!

  16. Cara on March 4, 2016 at 9:28 am

Good job on the weight training! I need to jump on that train (ing…lol). I am hoping to clean my pig sty of a house. Just an FYI, girls are MESSY in the bathroom!!! Holy cow, their bathroom is disgusting…:( Enjoy your weekend!

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:05 pm

i’m so afraid for that. times two!

  17. Stephanie Woods on March 4, 2016 at 9:31 am

I feel silly asking but what is a 5 day weightlifting split? Is it a certain way you split up muscle groups?

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:05 pm

don’t feel silly asking! yep! you split up the muscle groups so you can strength train more often without overtraining the muscles

  18. Amanda @ Exploring Life & Things on March 4, 2016 at 10:01 am

Hahah that shirt is awesome. Have a good weekend!

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:04 pm

      thank you! you too!

  19. Megan on March 4, 2016 at 10:04 am

I am confused as to why you hired a trainer (post baby) when you created a post baby body training plan? Makes it seems like you don’t have a lot of faith in your own program. Maybe you already answered this question. I can’t imagine I am the only one wondering this??

    • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 10:38 am

Totally understand what you’re saying. It’s very common for trainers to train each other. That’s how we learn new methods and strategies, and eventually become better at what we do. I am a huge believer in the PBB plan. I’ve been working on it on and off for 4 years, and used the methods and workouts twice to get back in shape after baby. Now that I’m back in shape, I really want to increase my muscle and clean up my eats. I know exactly what to do, but it’s nice to get some new motivation and someone to hold me accountable. It’s like a hairdresser having someone else cut their hair. You know how to do it, but it’s cool to have someone else who can show you new tricks along the way. I’m hoping to potentially collaborate with my trainer on an advanced PBB plan, and since she’s been in the industry for 20+ Years, she has a lot of knowledge to share.

      • Megan on March 4, 2016 at 10:47 am

Thanks for the quick response and for clarifying! Definitely makes more sense now.

        • Fitnessista on March 4, 2016 at 12:02 pm

no prob! have a wonderful weekend

        • Emily on March 4, 2016 at 5:23 pm

Yep, for sure Megan! I’m a trainer and a coach and I’ve worked with both before and will continue to. Continuous improvement biz we’re in. Learn, grow, get better 🙂 Not uncommon at all. Plus, sometimes it’s refreshing to have something totally different thrown at you after staring at your programming all day day in and day out.

Im trying to heal my DR after childbirth and heard about collagen. It’s a powder I add to my Vega One shake and one serving is 11g protein. It’s animal sourced, so not veg friendly, but it’s supposed to aid in healing. So far I’m digging it.

My absolute fave podcast is Natural MD Radio by Aviva Romm!! All things health and wellness for women & family. Definitely listen to the one on her background and how she became a midwife and doctor but they’re all great and informative!

This will be our last weekend as a couple without a child! Not sure if it is a “Fave” but my husband and I are going to try and relax and enjoy hanging with just each other before my induction on Monday night. I am super nervous about the induction since we are attempting to go natural (Bradley Method) but it is whats best for the baby! I am already signed up for PBB so knowing that it is up and running will give me motivation once I am cleared to work out again!

  31. Stephanie on March 4, 2016 at 2:07 pm

Also, thank you for the review on the goat whey! I’ve had my eye on it for a while and won’t bother now!

Your comment about the girls’ sleep seems to be true for us. We have twin girls who are now 2.5 YO. They seem to have flipped in their sleep styles. My perfect sleeper is now the one waking up to come sleep with us and the one that was always hard to go down sleeps 12+ hours straight. I feel your pain.

Thanks for all the fun articles! A podcast I’ve been into lately is called Being Boss. You may like it, too.

aaaah, these darn kids. I have a 2 and 6 year old. My 6 year old is now having nightmares/scared of the dark, so she gets up one to two times/night…exhausting…but I think I remember going through this when I was little? You look amazing! I’m struggling with my workouts. I am very routine and I do a variety of activities (bodypump, spin, crossfit type class, run,HIIT,yoga) And I”m wondering if I need to fit in “weight lifting”, lifting heavy weights, focusing on each body group. It’s so hard to fit in weight lifting and all the other stuff. So, do you not normally lift heavy? I’ve been consistent with heavy weights for about 9 months now, and I’m not getting the results I want (maybe I’m not pushing myself hard enough?)
