Gina: New Hair Faves

Hair goodies 1 of 1

Every year, I can count on Santa Madre to hook me up with some seriously fab hair goodies. She always knows about the newest trends and techniques, and stuffs my stocking with little goodies that are destined to become favorites. Here are some from this year:

Moroccan oil. This stuff is everything it’s hyped up to be. It smells like heaven and makes my hair extremely soft and shiny, while improving frizz factor. I just rub a dime-sized amount onto the second half of my hair (never put oil by the roots as it will make you a bit of a grease ball) while it’s still damp and blow dry/air dry and style as normal. It’s kinda pricey, but a little goes a long way.

-Twist bands. I have no idea why it took me so long to cross over to these things. My hair is always getting snagged and snapped by hair ties and these help prevent that. I also love that they don’t crease my hair (I like to save the gym hair if I can avoid washing it) and are even pretty worn on your wrist, without being too junior.

-Samples and mini bottles. These are awesome to keep stashed in my gym bag, especially since most of my showers are taken at work these days. I especially love Pureology- it’s a natural and cruelty-free brand.

-Sparkly headbands. You can never half enough, and they help keep my hair out of my face while teaching or working out.

Some old faves that I still use regularly:

my styling wand. I especially love that fact that it heats up so quickly- super easy for a quick get-ready routine (10 minutes with hair, makeup and getting dressed).

-Hair dryer.

-Paddle brush. A giant flap one from Target- pretty sure it’s Conair brand.

My hair routine has changed so much and is a lot simpler these days. I’ll never forget fighting with my hair in the Valdosta humidity, especially since I liked to wear it straight at the time. On the days I wash it, I’ll let it air dry at home, or if it’s during my lunch break, I’ll take my hair dryer with me to work and blow-dry in between classes. This way, I can curl it at any time to freshen it up, and also recycle my curled hair (it will last a couple of days). I’ve found that by wearing it wavy, it’s a lot more low-maintenance – after it dries naturally, I fix the rogue pieces with a styling wand.

Are there any hair faves you’ve recently found? Have you tried Moroccan oil or any other types on your hair?

xoxo

I just picked up some twist bands at Target today and unfortunately, they only wrap my thick hair in a ponytail twice, which is too loose. Do you have a brand you recommend?

I got Fine Featherheads headbands for Christmas (love!), so I might try their twist bands instead of the Goody Target ones….

Ehhh i wish i could remember the brand! I got them at Ulta and they go around my thick hair 3 times and stay in place well

I am loving miracle oil!!! It’s like Morracan Oil but it doesn’t weigh down the hair at all (I have fine hair!)

I’d love to find those hair ties, I haven’t seen them yet!

    • Fitnessista on January 9, 2013 at 4:39 pm

do you have an ulta? they have lots!

      • Lisag on January 9, 2013 at 7:56 pm

        So does Anthropologie.

Oh I love me some Moroccan oil! I have thick curly hair that in a frizz-inducing climate, that stuff is gold.

  4. Amanda on January 9, 2013 at 4:34 pm

I love MorocconOil, too! My mother-in-law put some in my stocking a few years ago and I’ve been buying it ever since!

  5. Carrie on January 9, 2013 at 4:35 pm

Moroccan oil is a miracle worker. I can’t imagine not using it now after it saved my fried hair.

    • Fitnessista on January 9, 2013 at 4:39 pm

seriously! my hair loooooves that stuff

  6. Sam @ The Balance Artist on January 9, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I love those twist bands! I use them all the time.

And I used to swear by that Moroccan oil, smells heavenly! And works so well. But I have since been using coconut oil on the bottom portion of my hair. I just scratch a little bit off and rub it in my palms and apply it the same as you would with Moroccan oil or leave-in conditioner. It transforms my easily-parched hair! Seriously amazing.

I love love love Moroccan Oil! They use it at the salon I go to, but I haven’t been able to bring myself to buy a bottle. I totally hadn’t thought about how long it will last — that might have to be my next me-splurge.

Gina, do u mind sharing which hair dryer you have? Mine just died and Im not sure what a good brand would be to buy. I straighten my hair and its pretty thick. Thanks! Jennifer N.

Love the sparkly headbands, where did you get them?

    • Fitnessista on January 9, 2013 at 9:14 pm

they were in my stocking! my guess is from the beauty supply store

  10. Hui on January 9, 2013 at 7:35 pm

I love Moroccan oil, it really worked well for my hair, but it made my skin breakout! :S

I love the Suave dry shampoo. It is a lifesaver!!! It helps me get another day or 2 out of my “gym” hair. I have Dark brown hair too and there is no white residue. I’m kind of a product snob, but this stuff is great…and only $2.50 at Target!!!

  12. Fitsouffle on January 9, 2013 at 8:28 pm

I have three favorite hair products; the wet hairbrush (you can brush right through wet hair getting out all tangles and it’s painless), garnier fructis leave-in conditioner (smells amazing and leaves hair super soft), and Oribe dry texturizing spray (a little pricey but it smells great and works magic!).

I had used that moroccan oil for a couple years (and LOVED) and when it was getting low my stylist recommended trying Karastasse Elixur Ultime (same type of product, diff brand). I loved moroccan oil and didn’t think anything could come close. I think that both do a really good job, but I have noticed that my bottle of karastasse has lasted longer because I use less, but my hair is also much shorter. Not very scientific. HA! The main difference I noticed is that the day after a fresh do, my ends would be a bit dry with the moroccan oil where as the exlixur holds the moisture longer. Any-who, I love the elixur and would highly recommend! I also like using a tiny tiny dab after a blow dry to tame fly-aways and increase shine. From what I remember they’re about the same price. Fun post :0)

    I’ll go 1st 🙂 ……
My Mason Pearson hair brush! It’s (VERY) pricey for a hairbrush, but it’s my hair splurge. It will last forever without having to replace, and ask any hairstylist, it’s the bomb. Look into it…!

    • Fitnessista on January 9, 2013 at 10:42 pm

      ok i’m googling now…. 🙂

Love Moroccan oil! Bumble and Bumble’s Defrizz serum is also really great!

  16. Amanda on January 9, 2013 at 10:26 pm

I love argan oil for my hair!!!!!!

  17. Leigh-Ann on January 9, 2013 at 11:25 pm

The hair ties are “Emi Jay”. I love them. Google them and you can find where to buy different colors/ patterns. 🙂

      thank you!

I have nicknamed Moroccan oil miracle grow for your hair. Someone gave me a bottle in September and last week I just bought a back up that I haven’t started on. I use 3 pumps/morning. It is worth its weight in gold. I will have to try twist bands. I bought the styling wand you have after the post you did on it and I can’t thank you enough. What hair dryer do you use? I’m in the market for a new one and my stylist recommended T3. Just curious as to which one you have. Thanks for all of the tips!

  19. Krista on January 10, 2013 at 9:26 am

I love Moroccan Oil, too. My hubby just got me the Moroccan Oil shampoo and it is AWESOME!!!

  20. Brittany @ Kitchen::Candid on January 10, 2013 at 10:33 am

I’m head over heels for Argan Oil. You can use it on your body, face or hair. It is pure magic in a bottle! And it doesn’t have any icky preservatives. Josie Maran’s brand is lovely but Whole Foods has some great options too!

How do the twist ties work? I don’t see how they could hold my long mane..!

    • Fitnessista on January 10, 2013 at 11:35 am

they work just like regular hair ties. i was skeptical, but totally a fan

  22. cassi on January 10, 2013 at 12:48 pm

If you have curly hair, curl keeper is heaven for frizz!!!!!!! Kinky curly also makes an amazing leave in conditioner/detangler i just started using
ouidad climate control gel – rocks
(all are silicone and sulfate free)
those are a few of my favorites. i have straight up crazy tight curls.
for straightening my hair i love maraccon oil as well!

  23. Sheena on January 10, 2013 at 3:36 pm

I love argan oil! I use it on my hair and add it to my moisturizer and body lotion. I buy the 100% pure cold pressed virgin organic argan oil from ELMA&SAMA (amazon!) and it’s MUCH more cost friendly than Moroccan Oil. ~$16 for a 2oz bottle! Need to try those hair ties. Regular ones slip out of my hair when I’m working out and it drives me crazy!

  24. J on January 10, 2013 at 5:47 pm

You should try the Moroccan shampoo and conditioner. Smells like the oil and works awesome too. It’s funny though, I used to do hair and had a membership to a warehouse, the oil was 12 bucks! The salons make bank on that stuff!

Dry shampoo is a mom’s best friend!

  26. Bek @ Crave on January 11, 2013 at 3:04 am

I use dry shampoo ever since you’ve recommended it! Oooo I need some tie babies- I hate the kinks in your hair from hair ties 🙁

  27. Jenny on January 11, 2013 at 12:44 pm

Has anyone used the twist bands with fine hair? Do they hold? My trouble with most headbands and hair ties is they just slip right off since I don’t have a lot of texture in my hair to hold them in.

  28. Mrs. W on January 11, 2013 at 4:29 pm

@Maria if you are having trouble finding a brand of hair tie that wraps around your hair enough times, try making your own for a custom fit! I used this girl’s advice and bought my own fold over elastic off Amazon and made 8 ties plus 2 headbands for $7.

    http://theresakistel.com/diy-elastic-hair-bands/

I played around with the length of ties to get it “just right” for the amount of hair I have to pull back. I also took her advice and tied the ends in bows or a figure 8 knot for a prettier look.

  29. Brittany on January 14, 2013 at 11:56 am

I swear by Moroccan Oil! It does wonders for my hair, too. I’ve been wanting to try a styling wand, but I wasn’t sure if it would work on my moderately thick hair…I might have to try it – I’ve only heard positive things! 🙂
