Gina: Stripes + more stripes

I’ve mentioned it a few times before, and this is one of the huge reasons why the ever-fashionable Meg writes most of the posts over here, but I’m pretty boring with my clothes selection. At least, I used to be. I bought outfits that I knew matched, shopped at the same stores, stuck with the same styles for yeeeeeaaaars, and never took the jump out of the box. Thank you to the incredible inventions of Pinterest and StitchFix, I’ve been taking some fashion risks, trying new things, and actually trying to put outfits together… on my own.

I’ve been meaning to write about my last StitchFix box because it was my favorite yet, but here’s a snippet from an outfit I wore last weekend. Here’s the thing, though- I have no idea if it goes together. This is what happens when I get a box full of beautiful goodies and have the freedom to mix and match (or mismatch?) with things I already own.

The occasion: movie and cocktails with the Pilot

Pieces:

Tart blazer (black version is here, was in my last SF box)

Sanctuary skinnies

Square necklace (similar here)

Blue and white striped tank (H&M, similar here)

Sperries

Undereye bags, courtesy of my 14-month old lovebug

I’ve always wanted to play around with mixing patterns, so figured stripes would be a great place to start. I scoured the Pinterestweb and found a common theme:

1) mix stripes in different colors as long as the stripes are about the same size

2) mix stripes with anything as long as they’re in the same color scheme

3) mix small, neutral stripes with floral tops (I can’t wait to try this one)
Here’s what I came up with:

I still have no idea if it really goes together, but I liked the combo. It took a long time for me to realize this, but if you like what you’re wearing, it shows. Especially in Tucson, I see a lot of unique styles and looks, ranging from hippy, punk-ish, more ethereal, and bold. Everyone who has their own style.. well, they OWN their style. It’s definitely something I’m working towards 😉

So what you do think? Win or whomp?

Have you mixed patterns lately?

 xoxo

    WIN! I love it!!

Looks great Gina! Love the blazer. I have the shirt. I’m about ready for another fix too.

My husband and I have a night alone courtesy of Grammy but I think we are too pooped to do anything! Sad I know. When the kids get to be 9&7 they don’t want any less attention 🙂

i like the mixing of stripes. it makes you brave. its fun and funky. i adore the necklace with it, too. but i’m not so sure the top and bottom half of the outfit i’d put together as an ensemble. maybe white pants or pencil skirt and navy shoes? but if it makes you happy, rock it.

I think it looks super cute!

Are under eye bags in season this year? If so I am FINALLY fashionable for the first time! Yes! 😉 I have my 6 month old to thank for that!

I really like your outfit and could see myself wearing it!

I am with Tina above…the stripe combo works but I do believe white pants would have pulled it all together.

I do agree OWN your look…whatever it may be. What makes you feel good is what matters most!

Way to step out of your comfort zone Gina!

Love it! I wish I was more adventurous… or at least that my adventures in fashion actually worked! Haha 😉

I have never thought to pair stripes together but am really loving it especially in a neutral/slightly nautical look. Will definitely be trying it some form myself.

Oh I want that Blazer! Super cute!

Definately a win!! You look really cute. I, too, have no idea what REALLY goes together and what is IN style. I tend to stick with the classics. I am waiting to do my first stitchfix so maybe I will step out of the box, too. I think as long as you OWN it like you said, then it will look great!

Yup, that one’s a winner. I just got my first Stitch Fix last week (!!) and had so much fun getting ready for work all week, deciding which piece I was going to debut and how I would wear it. I love the stripes/stripes, I would never have tried it but it’s so cute!

And oh yes, eyebags are *totally* in this season.

I like it. i didn’t think about white pants until someone said something but I bet they would look cute too.

Winner, winner chicken dinner! 🙂 I like it.

I admire you for putting yourself “out there”! I have to agree the bottom half isn’t working for me, but the most important thing is you feel good in it.

  15. Emily on March 3, 2013 at 2:50 pm

I would totally wear your outfit! The only thing I *might* change would be to swap out the Sperrys for a dressier pair of flats (or my favorite cognac boots since it’s still cold here). I got a navy and white striped blazer for Christmas; I’ll probably try this look out soon…maybe for drinks and a wine/painting class for my birthday tomorrow! Thanks for the idea 🙂

I live that combo! I have a blazer a little like that, in white with navy stripes. I’d never thought to match it with other stripes. I usually just throw a white t-shirt underneath. I like the florals idea too! Thanks for the tips!

  17. J on March 3, 2013 at 9:27 pm

I like the pieces separately, but think the stripe combo doesn’t work with the rest of the outfit. Maybe with different shoes or pants? Kudos for trying something different.

  18. Kathy on March 3, 2013 at 10:54 pm

I agree with some of the other commenters that white pants might look a little crisper with those shoes. Otherwise, I would probably swap the shoes for some strappy flat sandals. Of course this is all hypothetical since I am always in yoga pants and a tank top or pyjamas…sad? Love the stripes together though and the chunky necklace!

thumbs up!! I esp. love how the necklace matches your sperries 🙂

eh, i don’t do the pattern mixing. i do have a jacket like that from loft: http://www.loft.com/loft/product/LOFT-Apparel/LOFT-New-Arrivals/Striped-Cotton-Terry-Open-Front-Jacket/301215?colorExplode=false&skuId=13327330&catid=catl000018&productPageType=fullPriceProducts&defaultColor=9161

i just wore mine outlet shopping (got to be comfy, french terry works well for running around) with a loose white scoopneck cotton tee, mint skinny jeans, and some blush patent peep toe wedges and this frog bracelet from j-crew: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/jewelry/bracelets/PRDOVR~75863/75863.jsp

jcrew probably has some of my favorite costume jewelry–quirky that mixes well with conservative fine jewelry and doesn’t look too tacky tack

I definitely think how you wear it makes a difference- just be confident 🙂
