Gleeful Night + Cookie Morning

Hiiiii 😀 How are ya? And HOW AWESOME was Glee last night?! Lurved. It made me so happy to see

I just finished this morning’s Insanity workout with Ashley – today was cardio power and resistance. A lot of jumping, push-ups, sprinting and sweating like a beast. A lot of ya’ll have asked me to do a full review of Insanity when I’m done and I was thinking of starting an Insanity page (at the top) to re-cap each workout and post the final review. That way, those of you who want to read all about it can, and those who just want my usual shenanigans, workout tips and food won’t be cluttered with Insanity schtuff. What do you think??

Post-workout:

cookie

Bountiful bfast cookie 😀 (Holler to everyone who has been enjoying these lately! Thank you for the link love, too! <3)

-1/2 C oats

-1/2 scoop Sun Warrior

-heaping T almond butter

-almond milk

-1/2 T mesquite

-1/2 T chia

-cinnamon

-1/2 banana (I ate the other half before working out)

Some other recent eats:

Salad beast (with keys for size comparison- I use a serving bowl for my salad beasts)

beast

(Mixed greens, organic kidney beans, cucumber, bell pepper, Organicville balsamic)

Millet with AB and Polaner

millet

(x2 – it was muy delicioso)

And a demolished protein smoothie:

The plan for the day is:

-Farmer’s Market

-Laying by the pool (SPF, of course) with Ashley

-Working on Zumba dances

-Creating some kind of slow cooker dinner to celebrate Indian Food Wednesday

Have a wonderful day <3

Gina

Roons for a Cause:  Thank you again (SO MUCH!) for all of your prayers, good vibes, and to those of you who donated to my aunt’s relay page <3 You’re all amazing. The winner of the batch of macaroons is Christy– send me an email and what flavor you’d like (blonde, cacao, chocolate almond butter, or super-roons) 🙂

Fitnessistas with Whole-grain buns in the oven: Here is a workout plan that I devised for a friend, who is just starting her second trimester. Feel free to give it a try, but definitely check with a doc FIRST to get the exercise go-ahead and before starting any new workouts. The idea is to  feel good and maintain what you’re used to, not trying a bunch of new things for the first time (for example, if you’re not already a runner, don’t start running when you’re pregnant). This friend is already very active, so it’s a toned-down version of what she would usually do. Be safe and always wear a heart rate monitor.

It’s a circuit-style workout- perform each exercise in that circuit (not the cardio) for 10-12 reps and then repeat each circuit twice for a total of three times. Use light weights- nothing strenuous or difficult, just enough so that you can feel it. And as always, if you don’t feel well enough to work out, don’t.

Fitnessista Bun in the Oven Workout

prenatal1 (Source)

Day 1: Upper body + 25 min cardio

Warm up 5 min. easy/moderate cardio of choice

Circuit 1:

Overhead press (3rd trimester, do this seated)

Dips (with bent legs)

Stability ball chest press (3rd trimester, do this standing with resistance bands or using the cable machine)

5 min cardio (hills—add in resistance every 30 seconds; watch your heart rate)

Circuit 2:

Bent-over rows (3rd trimester, do this on your hands and knees)

Good mornings (instead of using a barbell, hold a light flat weight against your chest)

Stability ball bicep curl (3rd trimester, do this seated on a bench if you need to)

5 min cardio (tempo work- start at a moderate speed and intensity and every 30 seconds, slightly pick up your pace—watch your heart rate)

Circuit 3:

Side laying lateral raise (instead of supporting your head with your arm and laying on the floor, you can hug a stability ball and bring your bottom knee, bent, up to support you)

Bird dog

Chest fly (instead of doing the fly laying down (avoid laying flat on your back), do this standing with resistance bands or on a stability ball)

10 minutes of cardio: 5 minutes at an easy/moderate intensity, 5 minutes cool down

Stretch.

Day 2: Cardio (20-45 min, depending on intensity and how you feel)– Steady state (about a level 5-6 intensity; wear your HRM)

Day 3: OFF (or walk/light yoga)

Day 4: Lower Body +25 min cardio

5 min warm-up (cardio of choice)

Circuit 1:

Plie squats

Lunge and lift (hold onto a chair for balance. If these are uncomfortable, just do the “lift” part)

Bosu calf raises (instead of holding weights, lightly touch a wall in front of you for support)

5 min cardio (steady state; moderate intensity)

Circuit 2:

Wall squats (hold in the squat position for 30-45 seconds)

Abductor/adductor machine

Cable kickback (or you can use a resistance band)

15 minutes cardio: 10 minutes of hills, 5 minute cool down

Stretch.

Day 5: Cardio (30-45 min, depending on how you feel and intensity)

Day 6: Yoga (30 min to an hour, depending on the intensity)

Day 7: OFF

  4. Ami on April 14, 2010 at 10:16 am

I’m on the second set of DVD’s for insanity! Love it! I still can’t get through a workout without stopping (several times for that matter) or without swearing at Shaun T (even though he so yummy). I will admit though that I do 3 days of the Insanity workouts and 3 days of weights rather than the full 6 day plan. Just find that my knees get a little mad at me and it feels good to have the variation. What do you think?

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2010 at 10:17 am

i think that sounds like a great way to do it- i plan on doing something similar once we finish the 60 days

      • Fitnessista on April 14, 2010 at 10:17 am

and yes, shaun t. is very yummy 🙂

I’ve not yet tried a breakfast cookie but really want to! Do you think they would travel well or do you have to eat it off the plate?

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2010 at 10:25 am

yeah you definitely need to eat it off the plate, but i’ll usually put them in a tupperware and take with me if i’m on the go 🙂

    • Lauren on April 14, 2010 at 11:13 am

I bring one to work most mornings during the week. It seems to travel fairly well in tupperware.

  6. Theresa@ActiveEggplant on April 14, 2010 at 10:22 am

So glad you put the keys in for a size comparison for the salad beast! I always saw that white bowl & thought it was a “regular” cereal size bowl & then felt bad about the ginormous salads I was eating! Haha!
And awesome bun in the oven workout – no babies yet for me & my hubby but I’ll certainly remember where to look when the day does come!

I was SO amped that Glee was back on! During the season finale, I was on a cruise, and I seriously stayed in the cabin to watch the finale, and wouldn’t leave to go out until it was over. The husband was a little mad, but he got over it:) Worth it.

  27. Aisha on April 14, 2010 at 11:04 am

Thank you so much for your workout routine!! I’m also in my second trimester and have been trying to devise a good workout plan. You are so helpful in so many ways!!!

  28. Aubrey on April 14, 2010 at 11:07 am

I just started the insanity workout as well, I’m one day behind you and would def be interested in seeing what you think about the workouts! I am a personal trainer here in Tucson and teach Baby Bootcamp. If you end up moving here you should come check it out. It’s such a great job since I can bring my babies to work with me! Anyway, love your blog!!

ahhh where do you teach? my friend might be in your class (vanessa). i am definitely interested in teaching if we move there- we’ll find out this summer!

      • Aubrey on April 14, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Yes I know Vanessa! Its such a small world. I teach in Rita Ranch, Reid Park, and we move to Park Mall when it gets too hot (probably next month!)You would be anawesome baby bootcamp teacher, (or dare I say owner??) 🙂

  32. Brooke on April 14, 2010 at 11:26 am

I totally use a serving/popcorn bowl for my salad beasts too! I love it because it takes me longer to eat my salad than it takes my husband to polish off a whole pizza (although I sometimes sneak a slice :)).

I was wondering what sunblock you use? I’ve been scared to use any sunscreen (obviously not good!) because most of the ordinary brands contain parabens and the more natural products that I have seen are sunscreens and not sunblocks. I have heard, but not researched, that sunscreens are dangerous because they don’t actually block the harmful rays, just your body’s reaction to them. Basically I’m just wondering if you know of any sunblocks that have natural ingredients??

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2010 at 11:31 am

right now, i just use aveeno spf 70 but know that kiss my face has a paraben-free sunscreen

  33. Morgan on April 14, 2010 at 11:30 am

LOVED Glee last night. I especially loves the Vogue video at the end!
Love the Bun in the Oven workout! I’m almost 15 weeks pregnant now, and at about 13 weeks had to stop running (it just didn’t feel right), so have been experimenting with a lot of different things and not feeling really challenged. I’m going to give this a try for the week and see how I feel! Most of the DVDs I’ve found are just so simple, and I know I shouldn’t over exert myself, but I’m capable of a hard workout, as long as I don’t push too hard!

  34. Ari on April 14, 2010 at 11:34 am

Thank you so much for posting the Pregnancy workout! I love it and can’t wait to try it out! I am 6 months pregnant, and have tried my best to stay in shape =] Thank you thank you again!

  36. Kara on April 14, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I loved the prenatal workout, thanks for adding some 3rd trimester modifications 🙂 With only 5 weeks to go, it’s surprising how hard working out can be some days! Do you think the same workout plan would be good for postpartum workouts (after my doc okays it, of course)?

    • Fitnessista on April 14, 2010 at 2:10 pm

      definitely 🙂

  37. Lauren on April 14, 2010 at 12:40 pm

Gina, I took my first ever yoga class–a 90 minute Bikram yoga class–and it was the most intense, glorious 90 minutes of my life. I am glowing today, and can’t wait to get back in there to sweat til I’m a puddle.

You inspire me to try new things, and this was one of them.

    THANK YOU.

Thank you for introducing me to breakfast cookies! Delish.

I have a question for you. I recently sprained my ankle and will be in a walking boot for two weeks. I’m a fairly active person and love to workout, but what activities or exercises can I do (without going to the gym?)
