Good karma

Sometimes it feels so good to hang around the house in jammies and do nothing. Since the Pilot was off work yesterday, I was happy to celebrate a slow day with him 🙂 He let me sleep in and then I took care of Livi while he took a long morning nap. Around 12, we decided we should get dressed and go do something.

We wanted to go somewhere indoors since it was midday and crazy warm outside, so we met up with Kyle and Meg at the mall.

jamba2

Jamba Juice send me a gift card a couple of months ago to try out their new fruit and veggie smoothies, since I was unable to travel to the launch event they were kind enough to invite me to. They have 3 flavors: Apple N Greens (which has spirulina in it! Kind of fun to see at a popular smoothie chain), Berry UpBEET and Orange Carrot Karma. I decided to try the Orange Carrot Karma (carrots, mango, banana and orange) and loved it! The carrot flavor was strong, but I love carrot juice, and it wasn’t too sweet – very refreshing. I can’t wait to try the other two flavors.

I tried on a couple of things –wasn’t crazy about them- but the Pilot and Livi scored. The Pilot likes walking around the mall with us girls, but doesn’t usually shop for himself. If I ask him if he likes something, he’ll “meh” it, so it was a big deal that he picked up a few pairs of shorts and polos that he liked.

Still can’t decide if I’m a fan of the peplum dresses:

shopping fail

Meggie was also on the prowl for some graduation shoes… baby wildcat is all grown up! I’m so excited for her. It feels like it was just recently (instead of 5 years ago… oof) that I was graduating and throwing tortillas into the air. It’s a tradition for the U of A, but you have to sneak the tortillas in since they pat you down before walking into the stadium. I managed to hide two dozen flat underneath my graduation dress and have bathroom pics with my friends and I holding our packs of smuggled tortillas.

Just to give you an idea:

Amazing. Haha.

Instead of showing you what we made for dinner, I could just show you this insane little face and you can probably see it in her eyes.

bell21

Her two favorite things:

grilled dinner

Of course she had her own little plate of chicken and sweet potato, chomped it down within 4 seconds and came to stare down the Pilot and myself while we ate our dinners. When it comes to chicken, she has no manners.

I spent the rest of the evening YouTubing Afro-Brazilian, Samba, Cumbia and Merengue dance moves. It’s my first time teaching World Beat (the dance class with live drummers) this morning. A little nervous….

Hope you have a happy Saturday <3
xoxo

Gina

Congratulations to those of you who are graduating!! Sending lots of love and best wishes to you as you start a new chapter in your life.

Something to talk about: Does your alma mater have any fun graduation traditions? What’s on the fitness agenda this weekend? I’m teaching 3 classes today (World Beat, Buff Booty and Zumba), so tomorrow will probably either be a relaxing yoga/stretch day.

That tortilla thing is out of control! Love it.

I just took a cardio kickboxing class, and I am sufficiently spent. I’m going to a food festival this afternoon, so I thought this was a good way to start the day ; )

I think today is a rest day for me, maybe a little yoga but nothing exciting.

I guess we’re dull here in Nova Scotia, I don’t know of any graduation traditions like that from these here parts 😉

  5. Kailey on May 12, 2012 at 11:43 am

LOVE Berry UpBEET from Jamba Juice! delish. Gotta try the other two (unfortunately we don’t have them anywhere near where I live…guess I’ll have to go on another trip!) and the tortilla thing looks so fun!
Did Insanity this morning, love it. Wish I had Zumba plans!
Have an AMAZING first Mother’s Day tomorrow!!! Livi is lucky to have you as her mama 🙂

Haha, Bella is just as much of a beggar as my silly (not so) little kitty.

  7. Kandi on May 12, 2012 at 11:51 am

I just graduated nursing school, and the College of Health Professions is the only college at graduation who always goes crazy with silly string at the end of the ceremony. All the other colleges just looked at us like we were crazy, but it was so much fun and so worth it!

  8. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on May 12, 2012 at 11:52 am

Oh cool, I love that Jamba Juice has fruit + veggie smoothies! There was a Jamba Juice on campus my freshman year of college, which I loved. Haha that tortilla tradition is hilarious! I had no idea. And that is very impressive that you managed to smuggle 2 dozen tortillas into the ceremony!! That’s crazy that they pat you down beforehand. I love your iPhone case, btw. Have fun teaching classes and good luck with World Beat – you’ll do great!

  9. Ramani on May 12, 2012 at 11:55 am

Did you do your own hair? Its gorgeous. Can we see a video one day of how to? 🙂 HAPPY FIRST MOTHER’S DAY, Gina. You are such a great mama from what we read, enjoy your special day!

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:30 pm

yes, thank you! sure, i’ll try to make a video this week

  10. Chelsa on May 12, 2012 at 11:55 am

Yum dinner looks so good. I’ve been eating lots of sweet potatoes lately. Good stuff!!

  11. Jessica on May 12, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Your “meh” face in the picture of the peplum dresses is hilar. I’m not so sure about those either! Your yellow top is super cute, though!

  12. Averie @ Averie Cooks on May 12, 2012 at 12:27 pm

It’s that the way it always works, if you go to the mall on a mission to buy something, that’s the day that everyone you’re with other than you, i.e. hubs, kid, friend, etc. end up scoring while you’re not finding anything you’re in love with.

Great pic of yourself! I like those dresses from the rack but hard to know til you try them on.

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:28 pm

it’s the science of shopping 🙂

  13. Lauren on May 12, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Whatever you have been doing to your hair lately…it looks incredible. Any tips on cuts to get that movement? Or are you just naturally blessed with bodacious locks? 🙂

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:28 pm

thank you! my hair is super thick and out of control. madre cut off 5 inches or so to give it some movement- extra layers helped

  14. Patti @ This Starts Tonight on May 12, 2012 at 12:42 pm

There were SO MANY people at your graduation!!! I went to a much smaller school than that…I think I would have hyper-ventilated. We have a tradition in the theatre department where the freshmen write and perform a musical skewering the seniors, thanking them, revealing any still-hidden gossip, and wishing them on their way. Followed by a fancy party and lots of not-so-fancy after-parties, of course. The freshman who’s playing you has to steal your clothes for their costume! Usually this ends in you walking home from ballet class in tights and bare feet. :p

  15. Hayley on May 12, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I wasn’t a fan of the apple and greens smoothie, it tasted way too sugary for me! But berry upBEET was much better.

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:27 pm

good to know, i’ll try that one next!

  16. Meg on May 12, 2012 at 12:51 pm

you look gorgeous in yellow Gina 🙂 I love your hair too

  17. Laura @ She Eats Well on May 12, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I love your hair! Can you do a how-to make it curly/voluminous some time? I have very straight hair and it gets boring! On my fitness agenda….today I just ran 10 miles, woo hoo! It’s gorgeous outside in SF.

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:27 pm

sure! maybe that will be my next fashion video 🙂
      10 miles! way to go!

  18. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on May 12, 2012 at 1:36 pm

That’s pretty impressive that you were able to get in 2 dozen tortillas! We don’t have any crazy graduation traditions, but at our football games every one macks down after each touchdown! Not a bad tradition if you ask me! 🙂

  19. Jen on May 12, 2012 at 1:47 pm

My dog has no manners when it comes to Brussel sprouts of all things lol! That’s cool never heard of the tortillas in my school had beach balls and silly string not very original!

  20. Abby on May 12, 2012 at 3:14 pm

Not a huge fan of the peplum dresses/look myself, I have some serious hips that don’t need to be accentuated

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:27 pm

right?! it’s like “let’s put a ruffle in the least flattering place possible”

      • Abby on May 12, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Maybe they just couldn’t think of anywhere better to put it this season, which is why I love classic styles as opposed to the more trendy things haha

  21. Katy C. on May 12, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I’m in the School of Dance at ASU, and our graduation tradition is to dance barefoot across the stage when we get our diplomas! Can’t waaaait to do it next year. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on May 12, 2012 at 3:33 pm

      no wayyyyyyy
that makes me forgive you for being a sun devil 😉

  22. Abby on May 12, 2012 at 3:32 pm

And on the fitness agenda, I have a 10k coming up that needs training for…

  23. Allison W on May 12, 2012 at 3:51 pm

I had a peplum dress for my prom in 1991! I don’t think I’ve ever seen another – might be a reason for that!

  24. Becky on May 12, 2012 at 4:02 pm

I want to know more about the buff booty class you’re teaching!!!

  25. Lisa on May 12, 2012 at 4:04 pm

I also can’t decide if I like the peplum dress either, I mean it looks good on some people, not sure if I can pull it off. That’s a great picture of you, your hair is rocking! Haha, I can’t imagine where you would hide 2 dozen tortillas without them finding those. Classic.

  26. mary on May 12, 2012 at 4:09 pm

My daughter wouldn’t drink my homemade smoothies forever because they didn’t taste like Jamba Juice. So I looked up their recipes. They ALL had sherbet! No wonder. Good to see them making more healthful ones. But for the prices you could buy a Vitamix fairly quickly!

I have a degree from UA and I didn’t even know about the tortillas! It’s just an online masters, though. (Sun Devil at heart, still!)

  27. Emily on May 12, 2012 at 4:23 pm

Good luck at the world beats class! You’ll do great, can’t wait to hear how it goes! 🙂

  28. Catalina @ Cake with Love on May 12, 2012 at 7:27 pm

The new Jumbo juices sound really good, I love carrot juice too, would love to try theirs, maybe tonight since I am hitting the mall too!

  29. Cassie on May 12, 2012 at 7:44 pm

I never knew other schools did the tortilla thing. My school (UC Santa Barbara) throws tortillas at soccer games. We were Gauchos (as our mascot) so I guess it just became tradition. I really miss going to college soccer games! So fun

  30. Erin on May 12, 2012 at 9:34 pm

Your hair looks great – are you using a wand?

      thank you! yep 🙂

  31. Alicia @ Treble Tart on May 13, 2012 at 8:04 am

The tortilla idea sounds so fun! I just graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts last weekend and it was nuts! Being an arts conservatory, we never do anything normal. Our guest speaker was David Rambo, who wrote a ton of “CSI” episodes, so the Chancellor and Deans of the school surprised us with a crazy “CSI” skit! It had lighting, a smoke machine, a moving platform, wigs, makeup… the whole nine yards. And we also had Rosemary Harris (Aunt May from the “Spiderman” movies) give the closing speech! Very cool. And definitely something I won’t forget. 🙂

  32. Amy @ Our Four Letter Words on May 13, 2012 at 9:38 am

I don’t think there were any graduation traditions. I did sneak a book in with me though when I got my BS so I could read. The ceremony was almost 3 hours long, when I finished my Master’s I didn’t walk. As for fitness activities this weekend we have nothing on tap. We did a lot of walking yesterday with the Farmer’s Market, getting more canning supplies and getting things to have a potted patio garden. Today we’ll probably go for a walk. I started doing pilates again for the first time in a long time this week so we may do a quick workout with that.

  33. Jordan @ Eat, Write, Sleep [Formerly SSS] on May 13, 2012 at 9:49 pm

I never knew that about the tortillas. That’s really funny! We weren’t even allowed to throw our hats!

I’m like you – I got a little freaked out when I started getting emails about my 5 year college reunion. Say what? The husband’s 10 year high school reunion is next year. We’re so old now 😉
