Hello, Fried Thing

Hey everyone! Happy Sunday and happy rest day to all of the Summer Shape Up ladies out there <3 Be sure to check back in the AM for this week’s workout! It’s pretty hardcore 😉

Also hardcore? Our dinner last night at Flavor of New Orleans with Jeni and her pilot. The food was lovely and the company was even lovelier <3

I ate something fried.

catfish

As ya’ll know, I don’t usually roll with fried stuff because even though it can be rather tasty, it has trans fat which is harmful to our tickers. Last night, I thought I’d try a bite and see how it tasted, since it’s been quite a while since I’ve had anything fried, and I remembered that I also don’t usually eat fried stuff because it doesn’t taste that good to me. It was kind of bland and greasy.

This is a little more like it:

shrimp

Boiled seasoned spicy shrimp.

Delicious- I had at least 6 😉

For my entree, I chose the blackened tilapia with double veggies.

tilapia

I dominated that plate 😀 It was SO. FREAKING.GOOD and I love the seasonings they used. Pretty face-rocking.

After dinner we went to Marble Slab (I was too full from my meal , but the pilot got a cherry cheesecake cone), and then we went to see Prince of Persia….and I took a $9 nap 😉 Hahaha.

This morning, I was hankering for OATS, and found some oat bran from the depths of the pantry- it’s time to replenish the oat supply.

oats

-1/3 C oat bran

-black cherries

-1/2 scoop Sun Warrior

-1 T maca

-1/2 T raw cacao powder

-Stevia + almond milk

-1 T almond butter

Glooooorious 😀 I ate my oats whilst shopping online at Express (coupon code 7283 saves you $15 on every $60 you spend- tomorrow’s the last day) 😉

Today is my off day, too, so I might do some light yoga and stretching, but that’s it 🙂 We’re about to do a clean-stravaganza on the house and the pilot requested shrimp and prosciutto penne pasta for dinner.

Have a wonderful day! <3

xoxo,

Gina

Today’s tip: Step out of your comfort zone and try a different type of cuisine every week or so- you’re destined to find something new that you LOVE (like how I found my love for Indian cuisine).

Fried things always, like, seem appealing in theory but then I remember that they’re fried and greasy and neither of those things bode well for me! Too much grease gives me a headache. Hello fried thing, buh-bye fried thing 🙂

    Have a fab day!!

  2. Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin on May 30, 2010 at 11:42 am

I wish i didn’t love the taste of fried food. I don’t have it too often but when I do I love it. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2010 at 11:46 am

see that’s the way to do it 🙂 if you love it, there’s no prob in having it every now and again. i just remembered that i really don’t love the taste

  3. Bethany @ More Fruit Please on May 30, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I love your tip to try out new cuisine. So often we get in a rut with just eating the food we’re comfortable with. Experimenting with food is awesome!

Yum! Looks like a tasty dinner to this Louisiana gal. 🙂

I’m the same way with fried things– I know how awful they’re going to make me feel, so I usually just avoid them. BUT…sometimes I get too tempted, and have to try just a bite or two. 🙂

  7. Run Sarah on May 30, 2010 at 12:38 pm

I always nap in movies, its ridiculous! Your oat bran looks delish – I love the idea of adding cocoa powder, yum.

I love stepping out of my comfort zone and trying foods from other countries. I have also discovered a lot for Indian and Thai through that.

  9. Katherine on May 30, 2010 at 12:42 pm

what is the best way to eat shrimp in a restaurant? finders probably aren’t the most polite way but I can never properly get the shells off!

    embarrassing etiquette question

  10. kristi (sweet cheeks) on May 30, 2010 at 12:59 pm

what an awesome dinner!!! Glad you dominated it. 😉

Its cleaning day up in my house, too…i’m trying not to procrastinate, but alas here I am reading blogs. sigh. hahaha.

Gosh, I am so with you on the fried foods. They just taste gross to me. I hate the slicker it leaves in your mouth too..gross! I am way more of a steamed, grilled and roasted kind of gal!

  12. Annie D. from Annie's Simple Life on May 30, 2010 at 1:03 pm

I haven’t had anything fried for…gosh…I don’t even know how long. A couple of years at least. I’m with you- it just doesn’t appeal to me at ALL anymore!! Crazy how we change when we know better, huh?!

    YUM BLACK CHERRIES IN OATS!

  13. Jordana on May 30, 2010 at 1:12 pm

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2010 at 1:17 pm

i’m stuck home alone today while the bf goes out paintballing. I wish i could have gone but oh well. I will be studying my little heart out all day. Had a bit of a cleaning spree yesterday so today is time to buckle down and study.

    those veggies look super tasty!

  15. christina cadden on May 30, 2010 at 1:47 pm

I do not eat a lot of fried stuff either. My stomach is super sensitive.

  16. Victoria on May 30, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Hey! So I’ve just become certified in personal training and started working. It’s great but I have a question about training clients. I was just wondering how you work with clients who are quite overweight and have never really worked out before (what kind of routine do you do with them to get started)? Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2010 at 2:50 pm

      hey victoria,
i do a very basic weight routine with them and use SUPER light weights- like 3lbs light. because no matter what you do, they will be sore, because they’ve never worked out before- it’s all new to them. cardio-wise, we’ll do 3.0-3.3mph on the treadmill with 2.5% resistance

i’m a relatively new blogger. i absolutely love your site! can’t wait to read more 🙂

  18. sandy on May 30, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Long time reader..first time commenter. LOVE YOUR SITE. But I am trying to get the word out that Talapia is horrible for people! It has alot of Omega-6 fats–which are NOT good for you. The same fats found in donughts and bacon. Do some research and find out the same. But NOT all white fishes are created equally.

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2010 at 6:58 pm

      hey sandy,
thanks so much for saying hi! you’re right about the omega 6 content- it’s troublesome. i really think that occasional tilapia isn’t bad though… i haven’t had it in forever! of course, i prefer wild caught salmon over anything 🙂

  19. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on May 30, 2010 at 6:51 pm

I never eat fried food either because the grease gives me stomach aches and makes me feel so sluggish.

I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried curry for the first time not too long ago, and I’m obsessed!

  20. sandy on May 30, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Thanks for responding! Not many bloggers can get around to that all the time. Love your work out inspirations–trying to loose the last of the baby weight with bad knees. Been reading you for over a year now. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2010 at 9:12 pm

no prob, i always try to answer questions 🙂

  21. LisaG on May 30, 2010 at 7:38 pm

I didn’t know tilapia wasn’t good for you. What white fish is? Flounder, grouper? I already eat salmon at least once a week. Also, isn’t the non-albacore tuna the safest (in moderation b/c of mercury)?

    • Fitnessista on May 30, 2010 at 9:11 pm

      yep exactly
i still think tilapia is fine as long as you have it occasionally- it’s a great source of low cal protein and omega 3s

  22. Leah on May 30, 2010 at 8:10 pm

Im not big on fried foods either. Anything thats to greasy give me the hiccups. I consider this to be a blessing 🙂

  23. Jill on May 30, 2010 at 8:43 pm

I am so excited for week 2 of the Summer Shape UP! Week 1 was awesome, I don’t think I will be gettin any sleep tonite, I am way toooo anxious.

  24. Hayley @ Breath of Fire on May 31, 2010 at 12:13 am

Excited for the new workout. I think yours are some of the best of the blogworld. I really love what strength training does to the bod!

    • Fitnessista on May 31, 2010 at 8:06 am

thank you! i totally agree- strength training can entirely change your body 🙂

  25. Romy on May 31, 2010 at 1:34 am

That’s funny, I thought about trying out different kind of cuisines on Saturday when I was shopping for a new cookbook 😀 At least I wanted to cook something new once a week. I’m also curious for week 2 of the Summer Shape Up! Thanks for all your work you put into this blog!!! I love it 😀

  26. Rebecca on May 31, 2010 at 4:44 am

Loving your blog, a great inspiration! I used to like fried foods every now and again but the more I ate fresh healthy food, the more I fried foods tasted just like you said – kind of bland and greasy!

  27. Jess on May 31, 2010 at 7:42 am

Hope you post the workout soon! I’m off to the gym in a few minutes! :-/

    • Fitnessista on May 31, 2010 at 8:05 am

      it’s up! have a great workout 🙂

  28. Brittany on May 31, 2010 at 8:05 am

Fried foods with batter aren’t appealing to me anymore either. Now fries on the other hand, that’s another story. But I typically make baked sweet potato fries to satisfy that craving – works like a charm.

Hope you are doing well Gina! Please tell the Pilot thanks for all the hard work. I truly appreciate all the men and women serving our country!!

  29. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on May 31, 2010 at 8:19 am

Totally know what you mean about fried foods…they just taste like ‘fried’ to me – not the actual food.

  30. Marissa on May 31, 2010 at 9:38 am

I can’t even tell what that fried thing is, hahah… I’m right there with you; yesterday I was picking up lunch for our handyman and tasted one of his french fries. I remember I used to love french fries and eat them almost every day! But yesterday, it didn’t taste bad per say, but it was really bland and just greasy. Its amazing how tastebuds can evolve!

  31. Lindsey @ Foodie on the Rocks on May 31, 2010 at 3:22 pm

So funny. I am notorious for taking $9 naps! Glad I’m not alone 😉
