Homemade rose lip balm

Rose-flavored and scented things?

Nope, not obsessed at all 😉

Rose lip balm 1 of 1 6

I’m not obsessed with lip glosses, either. (<– try telling that to my husband who just found one in his car… minus the lid… melting everywhere. Yikes.)

Ok, so I kind of have a problem with both of the aforementioned beauty pleasures. I stock up on lip gloss, leave them everywhere, and somehow always find myself gravitating towards the little bins at the checkout line near Sephora. Those impulse-buy marketing managers own me.

Here’s the problem, though: Liv sees me put on lipgloss and wants to wear it. Since “wearing it” = “eating it” for the little lady, I don’t always feel comfortable with her consuming the ingredients in my usual lip glosses. Even the “good ones” are still a little gross. As a fun remedy, I thought I’d experiment with making my own.

I ordered some of these cute chapstick tubes from Amazon:

and the Pilot grabbed some beeswax for me at his last health food store stop. (I asked him for elderberry syrup when we were all fighting the seasonal sickness and thankfully, it helped a ton!

Gathered the rest of my ingredients:

almond oil, coconut oil, rose absolute essential oil and rosewater,

and got to work.

The most challenging part was figuring out how to melt the beeswax. I put the block in a double boiler, and when it did nothing, a quick Google search taught me that you need to cut the beeswax or shave it into small pieces for it to melt. I sliced it into thin squares, and since I’d also read that melting beeswax will likely ruining whatever cooking tools it touches, I used a washed can as the bowl portion of the double boiler. It worked perfectly!!

After everything was melted, I poured half of the mix into the chapstick tubes to harden (using one of our old medicine syringe/squirter things <– very high-tech over here). For the remaining half, I crushed a little Nars blush and some bronzer to create a lovely pink/brown shimmery color.

The verdict:

They came out beautifully! It made me wish I would have ordered more of the chapstick tubes, but instead, I found a smaller jar to store in my makeup drawer.

Here are the exact ingredients:

1.25 ounces beeswax (one small block. It goes a long way!)

4 tablespoons coconut oil

2 tablespoons almond oil

14 drops rose essential oil (or any edible essential oil you like)

1 tablespoon rosewater

crushed blush and/or bronzer for color

Steps:

Grate or cut the beeswax and heat in a double boiler until smooth. Remember to use things that aren’t super valuable in case beeswax hardens on it and ruins it.

Add your oils and scents next.

Then add your color (optional!).

Use a medicine dropper to pour into chapstick molds or check out some small lipgloss tins. 🙂

Hope you enjoy <3

I’ll put two in my purse: a tinted one for me, and a regular one for Liv if she seeings me wearing it and wants some.

Let me know if you give these a try! They’d make an awesome gift, too 🙂

Any fun beauty DIYs lately??

xoxo

Gina

I have it on my to-do list to make lip balm, too! Glad to see someone else give it a go first. 🙂

I’m also hoping to make some homemade body butter with coconut oil one of these days…

Like you, I’m seriously addicted to lip balms. Any ideas on an alternative to the beeswax?

    • Fitnessista on January 22, 2014 at 6:26 pm

you can use soy wax 🙂

    • Debbie on January 22, 2014 at 6:27 pm

I have used soy wax as a substitute.

I use candelilla wax, but because it is more brittle than beeswax, you only need to use half as much as the beeswax called for in a recipe. My lip balms are very smooth, and I think a big part of it is the candelilla wax!

This is so awesome! I have a problem with looking up DIY beauty projects and then NEVER doing them. I’m impressed. I should totally do this. I love rose-scented stuff too. I have a wax rose tablet sitting beside my bed and it makes my entire room smell like roses. So amazing. I’m in love.

This is so perfect! My little sister and her hubby made lip balm for everyone in the fam for Christmas. Turned out really great too!

Your recipe is slightly different from the one she used–I actually like yours a bit better..but shhh..no one needs to know that, right! lol 🙂

This is awesome! I worry about the chemicals in lip gloss and have always wanted to try out a DIY makeup product! This one just might be it 🙂

I was so confused when I read that you just found a lip gloss melting in Tom’s car – I thought maybe I was wrong and stumbled on an old post, since I just got inside from shoveling snow and still can’t feel my legs. 🙂

awesome looking gloss! Can’t wait to try making some!

As a soap maker and maker of all things bath and body, I’ll share a couple of secrets for the best textured lip balms: use a small amount of castor oil, it’s very viscous and imparts a smooth, wonderful texture (maybe 5-10% of your total recipe). Also for better texture, try Rice Bran Oil instead of Sweet Almond Oil. Pop a few capsules of Vitamin E, it’s an antioxidant and will help the shelf life of the oils in your lip balm, making it last longer. (Note* It’s not a preservative, preservatives inhibit growth of icky things in water based applications, like lotions. Preservatives are not needed in lip balms.) Also, if you’ve gone ahead and bought any of the specialty oils typically used, (sweet almond, rice bran, walnut, avocado) be sure to keep them in the fridge so they will last as long as possible. And always smell your oils before making lip balm to make sure they haven’t gone rancid, no reason to waste ingredients and supplies with old product!

ahhh! i wish i would have talked to you before making these 😉 will definitely add a little vitamin e and castor oil next time

    Great idea!

Do you worry that letting Livi possibly eat it with manufactured Nars product in it might be harmful though?

Just seems like it defeats the purpose of making in all natural.

But, awesome job, I want to try this!

    • Fitnessista on January 22, 2014 at 11:29 pm

i left half plain without EO or the coloring just for her 🙂

wow! so crafty! I have some coconut oil sitting around… :)!

I am obsessed with rosebud salve, but this looks like such a good money saving option!

I really like the honest company lip balms, they’re my fave and my little girl likes them too

This is so cool! I’ve been wanting to make my own chapstick for a while now but didn’t know where to get the tubes. Now I do! Thank you! I’m not the biggest fan of rose, but I do have a few others on hand that I’d like to try. So many variations 🙂 Thanks for sharing this!

This looks awesome and so easy! I want to figure out how to make my own face cream. Some EO’s have natural antioxidant and sunscreen properties, so that would be amazing!

would you please tell where you bought the medicine dropper and the chapstick tubes?

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2014 at 10:55 am

the medicine dropper came with one of liv’s infant medicines many months ago, and the chapstick tubes are linked (from amazon)

      • Bindhurani on January 24, 2014 at 8:53 pm

Thaks for answering my question. Really appreciate it.

I just made some lip balm, following your recipe but adding a little castor oil and cutting down the coconut oil to compensate. It’s lovely!!! I added some powdered blush for a tint, but it didn’t really color it. I might have to try a different brand next time. I’ll definitely be making this again. I LOVE the scent… so delicate.

    Thanks for the ‘recipe’!!!

    • Fitnessista on February 9, 2014 at 5:34 pm

i’m so happy you liked it!

  18. Luna on March 19, 2016 at 4:42 pm

How did you keep the rose water from separating?

    • Fitnessista on March 20, 2016 at 2:21 pm

it stayed mixed in pretty well!
