Today’s tip: Do you burn more calories in the morning or at night? If you’re wondering if you should work out in the morning or at night to get the most bang for your buck, think about when you have the most energy. There are different thoughts on this debate, but what it comes down to is your ability to have an effective workout. If you workout when you feel energized, you’ll work harder and burn more calories.

I still LOVE to sleep in on the weekends, but I do find that I have the most energy and want to do the most things in the morning. I used to be a total night owl when I was younger, but now the thought of waking up early makes me energized rather than angry 🙂

  2. Lisa @ Fresh Spinach on February 4, 2012 at 12:04 pm

I have recently discovered the joys of having a hard workout first thing in the morning. I love how I feel for the rest of the day!

    • Julie on February 4, 2012 at 2:04 pm

Ditto here! I’m all about waking up early nowadays and getting it in and done. I’m too tired from the rest of my day or don’t find time at night.

  3. Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] on February 4, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I love waking up early. Today the early bird got GF banana walnut choc chip pancakes 🙂

  4. Laura @ backstage balance on February 4, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I still love sleeping in on the weekends! Though I don’t do it all the time, and I also like waking up early for training or just to get a head start on the day.

Yum, that breakfast looks so tasty and filling. Enjoy the beautiful weather and the farmer’s market. It is raining her in the Midwest :(.

I spread my workouts out – walk with my boys in the mornings, strength or HIIT during their nap time, and pilates a few nights a week. Keeps me moving throughout the day. Before I had my babies, I would workout during lunch time at work or first thing in the mornings. If I would wait until the evening there would be many excuses like I’m too tired.

  7. kara on February 4, 2012 at 12:19 pm

it’s funny.. i’ve always said “oh i wish i could work out in the morning” and when i was commuting into nyc for work, i literally could not unless i got up at 430am, which was not happening. but then i always found that i work out WAY better after a full day. THEN when i moved into the city, i had more time in the morning and started doing Turbo HIITs and found that i am way more productive during the day if i get in that short burst of jumping all over the place in the morning. longer workouts are still better in the evening for me, but i’m glad i figured out that i CAN work out in the morning!
hope you have a lovely day!

  8. Michaela on February 4, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Olivia looks so comfy in her little bed 🙂
That is exactly the reason why I always work out at night, it is way more efficent than when I work out during the day.

  9. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on February 4, 2012 at 12:35 pm

I am the early bird of my house too! Always up first…but my parents don’t take to long to get up! LOL!

  10. Aylin @ Glow Kitchen on February 4, 2012 at 12:35 pm

I have to work out in the morning, or else nothing gets done later. I lose focus later on and find ways to distract myself or feel too tired to do any cardio. It may hurt to pull out of bed, but I just imagine how great I’ll feel 2 hours later 🙂

  11. Nina on February 4, 2012 at 12:39 pm

haha, when I was a baby, everyone called me night owl, too. I used to sleep all day long and at night time, I would keep my parents awake :). Have a nice day!

  12. Shaina on February 4, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I have to work out in the morning – but I can’t just roll out of bed and lace up my sneakers. I like to be up for 30ish minutes or so.

This early bird (and baby bird) got a schpicy breakfast burrito: 2 scrambled eggs, daiya, soy chorizo and lots of hot sauce. Nom nom. 🙂

  13. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on February 4, 2012 at 12:53 pm

It looks os beautiful by you! It’s a little cloudy here. Enjoy your weekend, Gina!

  14. Kilee on February 4, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Your breakfast looks delicious! I had overnight oats for breakfast, but fresh waffles and eggs look a bit more gourmet! Enjoy your fun family day!

  15. Olivia on February 4, 2012 at 1:09 pm

I love your starbucks mugs! BF and I vistited Arizona last summer and I was tempted to get a mug and didn’t. Regretting it now since his parents bought one for themselves on their trip to San Fran, so I’m always jealous and mad at myself I didn’t buy one in AZ! (We are from Canada… haha)

  16. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on February 4, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Our house is always divided between the early birds and the night owls! 🙂

How cute is your little dollface sleeping?! OMG!!

  18. Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic on February 4, 2012 at 1:55 pm

I used to sleep in on weekends but since I’ve started getting up at 5am each weekday to workout, the sleeping in totally throws me off. It’s just not worth the extra Monday morning pain to me, so I continue to get up at the same time. I couldn’t agree more with working out when it’s most convenient and best for you. There’s arguments on all sides of when burns more calories or if it matters. Working out first thing in the morning for me has meant that nothing comes up that would conflict with the workout. No one else is vying for my time at 5am!

  19. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on February 4, 2012 at 1:56 pm

You always have the best looking English muffins and waffles…I love jelly and PB& J (or AB&J).

And Olivia is such a little doll in her bassinet. She’s just adorable, Gina!

  20. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on February 4, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Livi is so cute!! I’m definitely a morning person for workouts – more motivated and it makes me feel good for the rest of the day!

  21. ash on February 4, 2012 at 1:59 pm

love it, have a great weekend!

  22. Laury on February 4, 2012 at 2:08 pm

I love working out mid-morning. I usually see clients firs thing then hit up the gym right after. I’m in a routine…I used to workout a night years ago but hate it now.

Your meals look just like mine, minus the chicken. Eggs, avocado, greens…I live off that stuff!

I don’t think I ever told you this but I love your bassinet!

  23. Melodie on February 4, 2012 at 2:17 pm

your baby girl really is beautiful. i don’t say that to just everyone. honestly, i don’t. but everytime i see a picture of her, i think she’s just a very stunning little baby. enjoy your weekend!

I now teach Zumba twice a week–once at 11 AM and once at 4PM. I have WAY more energy at 4PM!

cute piccy of doggy and baby! Love it 😀

  29. Ali on February 4, 2012 at 3:50 pm

I wish I could be an early bird, because I love the mornings, but I certainly like to stay up late too! I wish I could sleep between 1-5 pm and 1-5 am. That would work perfect. I agree. Work out when you will work out. Don’t worry about the time of day.

  30. Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs on February 4, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Olivia looks so sweet all swaddled in her bed!
    Happy weekend!

  32. Courtney on February 4, 2012 at 4:11 pm

I love working out first thing in the morning! Just feels good to be awake with the sunrise! 🙂

  33. Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon on February 4, 2012 at 5:21 pm

I’m very much a morning person but I prefer working out at night! Part of this is that I’m not allowed to park my car at the gym until after 3:30 (so annoying!!) but I also find that I can workout harder and longer when I’ve had a full day to get food and fluids into my system.
Hope you had fun at the farmer’s market! Such a fun Saturday outing…

  34. Leslie Wingate on February 4, 2012 at 5:56 pm

Oh, seriously. Could she BE any cuter? (Sense my inner Chandler Bing aching to get out?)

    Yummy eats!

  35. Laura @ She Eats Well on February 4, 2012 at 6:28 pm

Even though the idea of sleeping in always sounds so very lovely, I am always totally better off working out in the morning. Getting those endorphins early and having them last all day is key to my good moods and energy levels. I also find it hard to sleep and wind down if I work out too late at night. It definitely takes time getting my body to wake up and get into that routine, though…but always worth it!

  36. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on February 4, 2012 at 6:46 pm

I’m an early bird too! I get up at 6, but my energy doesn’t kick in until 8 or 9 am, so that’s when I like to do my workouts. I couldn’t imagine being one of those people who works out at 8 or 9 at NIGHT! I’m so drained by then! 😛

  37. Kristen on February 4, 2012 at 6:46 pm

I can’t sleep in even if I wanted to.My internal is going off by 6:30 or so. I get very jealose of my hubby. He has no problem sleeping in. Ugh!

I often split my workouts up. I can do cardio first thing in the morning but tend to do better with strength training when I’ve had a few meals in me.

Your weekend sounds nice and relaxing. So glad you guys seem to be getting in a nice little groove and feeling a little more comfy with your new life.

  38. Lisa on February 4, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Aaw Livi is a babydoll! So cute. I loved the pictures of her. Your breakfast combo looks tasty. I just bought an omelet/fritata pan today. I needed it. Saw a recipe for one with salmon, goat Cheese, dill, spinach, cherry tomatoes& kalamata olives. And one with prosciutto, asparagus, feta.

  39. s on February 5, 2012 at 2:15 am

i love getting in a workout first thing in the AM! i stay up late sometimes so that isn’t always feasible, though.

  40. Life's a Bowl on February 5, 2012 at 8:10 am

I definitely have more energy in the morning and taking advice from your tip and going to my first BodyPump class this morning 😀

  41. Chelsa on February 5, 2012 at 8:24 am

yum! your breakfast looks so good. I try to workout twice a day. Before breakfast I’ll do a 15-30 minute power walk, jog or fitness DVD. Then later in the day before dinner I do weights and higher intensity workouts. As long as I do my morning workout I feel accomplished even if I don’t have time for the evening workout.

  42. Alaina on February 5, 2012 at 8:48 am

That view looks amazing! I would love to do a little farmer’s market shopping too!

I really try to be a morning person. I find myself more productive when I’m up early then when I’m up late.

  45. Ashley on February 5, 2012 at 11:01 am

I find I have a better without when I do it before work….but a part of me just can’t tear myself out of bed at 5am to do it!

Thank you so much for the farmers market recommendations in Tucson, I tweeted you when I was there on vacation – they were great 🙂

  46. Heather on February 5, 2012 at 11:56 pm

I love arugula with breakfast…my husband thinks I’m weird eating salad for breakfast but it’s so good! Glad I’m not alone, lol
